Toshinori and Midoriya's second meeting outside the fast food restaurant was far from the last time they ran into each other. The next time they met was when Toshinori was responding to a villain attack as All Might. The criminal in question had robbed a convenience store and freaked out when the heroes showed up and tried to fight them off, refusing to surrender even when All Might appeared. In the midst of the battle, a piece of concrete debris from one of the villain's attacks flew into the crowd of spectators, who had gathered to watch the fight. It always frustrated Toshinori that people would stick around to watch villain fights because stuff like this could easily happen. While the chunk of wreckage wasn't very large, only about about the size of a football, it still could have easily hurt or killed someone depending on where it hit them.
Fortunately, just as it was about to land and bludgeon some poor civilian, the chunk of concrete stopped in midair. Standing nearby, with his arm outstretched towards the piece of debris, was the unmistakable green mop of hair of Izuku Midoriya. Toshinori let out a sigh of relief before turning his focus away from the crowd now that they were no longer in danger. Less than a minute later, the villain was defeated and Toshinori slipped off somewhere unseen to revert back to his civilian form.
He then made his way into the crowd to look for young Midoriya and make sure he didn't hurt himself catching that debris with his quirk. Pushing your quirk to or past its limits could have some nasty effects on the body, and Toshinori got the feeling that Midoriya was the kind of person who would overexert himself in order to save someone. Picking his way through the sea of bodies, he eventually reached the boy. Thankfully, Midoriya was perfectly fine, and the two of them wound up talking again.
After that, Toshinori found himself running into young Midoriya quite a bit. Apparently, watching heroes do their jobs was a favorite past time of the boy's. And since Toshinori was a hero himself, they naturally wound up in a lot of the same places. Most of the time when they met, they ended up talking to each other.
He wound up learning quite a bit about young Midoriya as a result of their conversations. He learned that the boy's quirk was in fact a duel quirk, with both the ability to sense disasters and short-range telekinesis. According to Midoriya, the telekinesis was probably a mutation of his mother's quirk, which could attract small object, while he had no idea where the disaster sense came from. Toshinori also learned some more personal things about the boy as well, such as how he kept extremely detailed notes on all the local heroes (which Toshinori actually found just the tiniest bit creepy), or how he enjoyed listening to old western music.
While it may have been a result of Toshinori having barely any friends, he found the young boy to be rather enjoyable to be around and started looking forward to the next time they would happen across each other.
At current, Toshinori was in a super market doing some grocery shopping. He had just gotten chewed out over his eating habits by Chiyo, and had been given a list of healthy ingredients to buy and healthy meals to make with them. Turns out that you shouldn't be eating fast food regularly when you are missing your stomach.
As he placed a few items in his basket, he noticed that the woman next to him was currently staring at something on the top shelf. The woman herself was on the shorter side, though Toshinori might be a bit biased considering that anyone under 180 centimeters was automatically labeled as tiny in his mind. Either way, it was pretty obvious she wouldn't be able to reach the shelf she was looking at.
"Excuse me. Would you like some help reaching that?" Toshinori asked.
"Oh no, I've got it." She replied, floating an object down from the shelf. When the woman turned to address him, he had to do a double take upon seeing her face.
His first thought was that she looked a lot like Nana. Though, upon taking a closer look, most of the resemblance there came from how they did their hair similarly. The next thing he noticed was that she actually looked a lot like Midoriya. They both had the same hair color, big doe eyes, and general face shape.
The next cursed thought that his brain traitorously provided was that she looked like the hypothetical child of Nana and Midoriya. The subsequent mental image was something that Toshinori could have gone his entire life without.
"Um, is there something you need?" The woman asked, cutting through his thoughts. She was backing away slightly with a hesitant look on her face.
Oh God, how long had he been standing there staring at her? He had to look like an absolute creep right now.
"Ack, I'm terribly sorry! You just look like someone I know, well, two someones actually. I didn't mean-" Toshinori's word vomit was cut short by him hacking up a spray of blood. The woman let out a startled yelp and actually jumped into the air.
'This encounter cannot possibly get any more awkward.' Toshinori thought, and then desperately hoped he didn't just jinx himself.
"S-sir! Are you okay?!" The woman asked, worry clear in her voice.
"I'm fine. You don't need to worry, it's just a medical condition." Toshinori hastily replied, pulling some tissues out of his pocket, that he kept with him in case of this exact occurrence, to wipe the blood off his chin.
"So, coughing up blood is normal for you?" The woman questioned, her voice taking on a tone that Toshinori couldn't quite identify.
"Unfortunately." He answered somberly, "I'm sorry about that. I'll let you get back to your shopping."
"Hang on." The woman said just as Toshinori was about to turn around and leave, "Um, your name wouldn't happen to be Yagi would it?"
"Huh? Um, yes." Toshinori responded, now watching the woman carefully. Sure she looked harmless, and he had a pretty good idea how she knew him, but decades of training kicked in and he immediately went on guard.
"It's just, I believe you know my son, Izuku." She said, and Toshinori relaxed. He had suspected that to be the case, but it never hurt to be cautious, "Oh, is that what you meant when you said I looked like someone you knew?"
"Yes, you two look a lot alike. Your son's a very sweet kid. He's mentioned you before." He extended his hand to her, "Yagi Toshinori, it's nice to finally meet you."
"Midoriya Inko, and likewise." She took his hand and shook it gently, "I have to admit, when I first heard that my son was friends with an older man, I was a little concerned."
Toshinori blanched at that. He had never considered just how... suspicious his relationship with young Midoriya might look from an outside perspective before. In hindsight, a friendship between a twelve year old boy and a man in his fifties was hardly normal. And with how they were constantly running into each other in public, oh God. It probably looked like he was stalking the poor child.
Thankfully, Inko continued talking, which was a good thing since Toshinori wasn't sure he could speak right now.
"Of course, he assured me that you were good person. In fact, he said you reminded him of a kind, elderly golden retriever." Inko looked him over and gave a small grin, "And, I can kind of see where he's coming from."
"That's... not a comparison I've ever heard before." Although, Toshinori remembered that Gran Torino did use to compare him to a puppy when he was younger, "I'm glad to hear it though. I never really thought about how, well, creepy my interactions with him might seem. I'm sorry if I ever worried you."
"It's fine. I'm just glad he's making friends, even if they aren't his age. He... He doesn't have much of a social life. Part of it is because he spends almost all his time watching the heroes work." Inko said sadly, before changing topics, "He actually mentioned that you work with the Pro Heroes?"
"Yes, I fill out reports and whatnot." Which was true. He didn't have any staff who could help since he had to keep his injury a secret, so he had to do all of that personally, unlike most Pro Heroes, "It's pretty boring work for the most part, and I constantly have to move around the country."
"Oh, that's must be pretty unpleasant. My husband has to move around a lot because of his work too. He's actually overseas right now." Inko sighed, "But, aren't most heroes stationed in particular cities?" She asked.
"Yes, but the one I work for travels around the country." He noticed the question on her face and spoke again, "I'm afraid I can't actually tell you who I work for due to legal reasons. It's frustrating, but it has to do with ongoing investigations and the like." It was a bald faced lie, but he tried to avoid any possible connections to his hero identity he could.
"Oh, I see." Inko replied, a look of disappointment on her face. She had that same kicked puppy look that Izuku had when Toshinori told him that he couldn't tell him what hero he worked for. And once again, they looked so disappointed that it almost made him want to tell them that he worked for All Might, "I take it you moved here recently then?" She asked, perking back up.
"Yeah, I just got here a few months ago. So, I'm still getting used to the city." Toshinori said.
"Where are you from originally?" Inko asked.
"Well, I was born in Tokyo, but I moved here from Hosu." Toshinori answered.
"I'm originally from Morioh myself, so I know just how difficult it can be to move to a new city. So, if you ever need anything, I'd be more than happy to help." Inko said with a smile. Apparently, young Midoriya got his smile from his mother, and much like with him, it was so bright that Toshinori almost felt the need to avert his gaze. He couldn't help but compare it to his fake All Might smile, and there was just no contest there.
"Th-thank you." Toshinori actually stuttered, 'This family is going to kill me. Number One Hero All Might found dead from diabetes due to overexposure to pure pureness.'
After that, they talked for a little bit longer. Mostly about what it was like living in Musutafu, but they also talked about Young Midoriya for a bit. Eventually, they parted ways to finish their shopping and then go home. Toshinori was in much higher spirits than usual as he left the super market.
Yay, Toshinori made a new friend. He now has what? Three? Four if Gran Torino counts?
I made a slight deviation from canon, as I'm pretty sure Toshinori didn't move to Musutafu until just before the series started. I had him move there earlier in order to facilitate his friendship with Izuku.
