Izuku was a lot like Inko. Physically, he inherited about eighty percent of his appearance from her. His freckles and utterly unmanageable hair were really the only things that he didn't get from her. Personality wise, they were also a lot alike. Both of them were easily flustered, but also fiercely protective and kind. Also, they both cried. Like, a lot.
Which just so happened to be what they both were doing right now.
In fact, it was what they had been doing for the past half an hour, ever since Inko had been let into Izuku's hospital room. It had been a long time since Inko had received a call telling her that her son had been hospitalised by a villain attack. Though not long enough in her opinion. Dropping whatever she had been doing, Inko rushed over to the hospital. Thankfully, it wasn't too long before she was allowed to see her son. One of the doctors working at the hospital had a quirk that helped speed up the healing process and the necessary license to use it. As such, she had been shown into her son's room almost as soon as she arrived.
Immediately upon entering, she started crying. Which lead to Izuku crying. So, now they were both crying. Also, they were hugging each other tightly.
Eventually, they ran out of tears, but Inko still didn't let go of Izuku. Even though he was safe now, she was still terrified. This was the second time now that something like this had happened. Occasionally, she still had nightmares over what had happened in the park when he was four. When he first started watching villain fights she had been so worried that he would get hurt again. It had taken months of him promising that he would stay back and only watch the Pro Heroes work from a safe distance, and that he would always listen to his quirk if it warned him of danger before she was even remotely okay with it.
It had been so bittersweet for Inko when his quirk first appeared. On one hand, she couldn't help but be excited and happy about it, especially since they had both thought him to be quirkless until then. Secretly though, she had been so worried. Because now, there was no way he wouldn't become a hero. Izuku's quirk seemed practically custom made for hero work.
And when he became a hero, things like this would become a constant danger.
Inko's eyes started to burn as more tears threatened to spill out. Izuku shifted, and pulled their bodies apart until he could look her in the face. His eyes were red and puffy from all the crying, and Inko realised hers were probably the same. Shifting her gaze to the side every so slightly, she stared at the bandages covering Izuku's left ear. He had lost a large part of it in the villain attack, leaving a permanent mark on her boy.
"Mom." Izuku spoke and Inko locked eyes with him again. He looked just as close to crying again as she felt, "I'm sorry. I- I didn't- I'm sorry." As he chocked out half sentences, the tears brimming in his eyes began to fall down his face.
"Izuku, it's okay. It's not your fault." Inko pulled him back into a tight hug and softly ran a hand through his hair, "None of what happened was your fault."
It wasn't his fault. He hadn't sought out the villain attack with his quirk. He had been taking the train home like a normal boy when they attacked it. There was no way he could have avoided it.
"I- I left the train." Izuku sobbed out, "I tried to leave and get help, and I got attacked. I thought that my quirk would keep me safe, would keep me away from the villains. I was so stupid."
It sounded like something that her Izuku would do. He always tried to help people, no matter what. The protective anger Inko felt over him risking himself was quickly smothered by her need to comfort him.
"It's okay. Izuku, it's okay." Inko shushed.
"I'm sorry." Izuku repeated, his voice muffled due to speaking into the crook of her neck, "I wasn't trying to make you worry."
"I'm not upset with you." Well, she was a little upset with him. But that could wait until later, "Just, be more careful. Okay?"
"I will." Izuku mumbled. Pulling away from Inko, he wiped the tears from his face and gave a weak chuckle, "I'm sorry. I was trying to comfort you. But, instead you wound up helping me." He looked away nervously.
"Oh, sweetie." Inko cupped his cheek with one hand and brushed away some his tears with her thumb. He sounded so upset at, well, being upset. Like it was some massive failing that he had cried over being attacked instead of being able to make her feel better, and somehow he should feel ashamed of it, "I'm your mom, I'm suppose to help you. You just went through something horrible, you shouldn't have to try and comfort me over that."
"It- it wasn't that bad." Izuku mumbled quietly. Inko dearly hoped he was just trying to assuage her worries. Because him actually not considering what happened to be 'that bad' would only make her more concerned. Izuku smiled, "I mean, I got to meet All Might."
Ah, hopefully that was it. He was just too happy about meeting his idol to be too upset over being stabbed and shot. She was still worried about his priorities though.
"It was incredible!" Izuku gushed. The topic of All Might seemed to flip a switch inside her son and any traces of his sadness disappeared, "He just showed up out of nowhere and stopped all the villains. It only took him two minutes, tops! He was even more amazing in person than in any of the videos I've seen of him. Even though he wasn't wearing his hero outfit, he was in a t-shit."
A knock on the door caught both of their attention. Turning to face the opening door, they saw one of the nurses poked his head into the room.
"Excuse me, I hope I'm not interrupting." He said.
"It's okay." Inko responded politely, "What is it?"
"You have another visitor." The nurse looked at the tablet he was holding, "A, Yagi Toshinori is here to see Midoriya-kun. Shall I send him up?"
"Ah, Yagi-san!" Izuku exclaimed, "Yes! Send him in, please!"
The nurse nodded in understanding, and ducked out of the room, closing the door again as he left. A few minutes later, the door opened again, and the tall, almost skeletal form of Yagi entered the room. He was wearing a simple dress shirt and pants. The man looked rather distraught upon laying eyes on Inko and her son, then quickly looked away. Shuffling towards one of the chairs, he took a seat, all while never making eye contact with either of them.
"Yagi-san." Izuku spoke, breaking the silence, "I'm glad to see you're okay." Yagi only made a noise of acknowledgement as he stared at the ground, his hands clasped firmly in his lap. Izuku gave the blonde man a look of concern, "Is something wrong?"
Yagi bristled slightly, shifting in his seat as though he were trying to avoid Izuku's gaze. He stared at the ground.
"I'm sorry." Yagi whispered, just barely loud enough for them to hear.
"Huh, what for?" Izuku asked, clearly confused.
Inko was in the same boat as her son. It didn't sound like he was just offering condolences, his behavior didn't match up with that, it sounded like he was genuinely apologising. But, why would he be apologising?
"I shouldn't have let you leave that train, young Midoriya." Yagi finally looked them in the face. The look on his face was heartbreaking, "It's my fault that you got hurt."
Now Inko understood. Yagi must have been on the train with Izuku when the villains attacked. And he was blaming himself for what happened. Even though he was just an old, sickly man, he was blaming himself for not being able to protect her son. If Inko had had any remaining doubts about Yagi, they would have been crushed right now.
"N-No!" Izuku immediately shouted, "You tried to stop me! It was my fault for running away!"
"Even still, I should have-" Yagi tried to argue.
"No! It was my fault-" Izuku immediately countered.
"Both of you!" Inko cried out, on the verge of tears again, "Please, stop. It's neither of your faults. So, please, stop beating yourselves up." Couldn't they see that they were just hurting themselves? Izuku had driven himself to tears over upsetting her from being hurt. And Yagi looked devastated about his supposed failure to keep Izuku safe, "Blaming yourself isn't helping anyone. It was the villains who did this, not either of you."
There was no immediate response. Looking between their faces, Inko came to the frustrating and utterly crushing conclusion that neither of them believed what she said. They still thought they were guilty for what happened (Maybe Izuku was a little guilty, since he did put himself in unnecessary danger, but now really wasn't the time to discuss that. And he certainly wasn't as at fault as he seemed to believe). Sniffling, Inko started crying again, causing them both to scramble to speak.
"You're absolutely right!"
"It was the villains' fault!"
"We promise we won't keep blaming ourselves!"
"Please stop crying."
Inko simply grabbed Izuku and pulled him into another hug. Yagi had moved closer to her and Izuku during his attempts to get her to stop crying, so she pulled him into the hug as well. The man went stiff as a board when she did and she felt him awkwardly pat her on the back.
-000-
Izuku could officially say that today sucked. If it weren't for the fact that it led to him meeting All Might, he'd say that getting on that train was probably one of the worst decisions he had ever made. Even then, he wasn't sure if meeting All Might was worth the amount of fear and worry he caused his mother, or the guilt he caused Yagi-san. Or the feelings of uselessness he felt from how he utterly failed to help anyone.
And now, to make things even worse, the police needed to talk with him. While they understandably needed to get a statement from him, there was also the matter of his fight with the villain. Using your quirk to attack someone like he had was highly illegal, and Izuku was currently very worried about possibly being arrested. Or being blacklisted from U.A.
So, yeah. Today really hadn't been that great.
Izuku was sweating bullets as the detective entered the room. The man looked like he had stepped straight out of a film noir story, with his hat and trench coat, he even had a small notebook. Admittedly though, Izuku had very limited knowledge of film noir. Nervously, he glanced over to his mother, who was still in the room, Yagi-san had left early. She seemed to have picked up that there was something wrong, since she looked worried too.
At first, the detective, who had introduced himself as Tsukauchi, only asked what Izuku assumed to be standard questions for victims of a villain attack. As the questioning continued, Izuku's nerves only became more frayed, since he knew what was inevitably coming. Even still, he answered the questions as best as he was able. He told the detective about how he tried to sneak out of the tunnel and of his bizarre conversation with the villain with the shadow quirk. Wasn't her name Yoru, or something like that? He explained how she asked if he was able to stand or if he knew where some arrows were. Hopefully, the police would be able to figure out what the heck she was talking about, because Izuku still couldn't parse most of what she said.
Then, he had to tell Tsukauchi about his fight with the villain.
As he described the battle, the detective started to frowned, basically confirming all of Izuku's fears that he was in trouble. His mom also gasped at several points, which really wasn't helping with his guilt over what he had put her through.
Eventually, Detective Tsukauchi closed the notebook, and gave Izuku a serious look.
"I don't think I need to tell you that unlicensed quirk use is illegal, especially if it's used to harm someone." The detective said solemnly.
And, Izuku's heart stopped. There went his hopes of ever being a hero. Out of the corner of his eye, he could see his mom cup her hands over her mouth.
"That being said," Tsukauchi continued, "Your actions were all in self defense. You were actively trying to avoid a confrontation with the villains when you were attacked. And while leaving the train was reckless of you, trying to escape from a villain attack isn't illegal."
"So... I'm not in trouble?" Izuku squeaked out, hardly believing what he was hearing.
"No, but I am going to remind that actively seeking out villains and fighting them is illegal, and could easily land you in jail." Tsukauchi replied.
"But- but how do you know that's not what I did? I could just be lying about trying to avoid them." Izuku said out loud, while mentally he was screaming at himself, 'Are you trying to get him to arrest you!?'
"True, but you have a good track record. You've reported numerous crimes to the police, and have never once tried to interfere before. Plus, I've heard about you from multiple officers and Pro Heroes, and they've all told me you're a good kid." Tsukauchi replied with a smile, "So, I'm going to give the benefit of the doubt." He turned around, and headed for the door, "Now, if you'll excuse me, I need to go. I hope you get better soon."
With that, the detective left. Izuku collapsed back down onto the hospital bed, utterly stunned as relief crashed over him. His mom moved back over to his side, and gave his hand a comforting squeeze.
A little while later, the door to the hospital room opened again and Yagi-san reentered.
"Everything go well with the police?" He asked.
"I'm not going to jail!" Izuku happily exclaimed.
"Good job!" Yagi-san gave him a thumbs up.
After that, they descended into more comfortable small talk. Izuku gleefully told Yagi-san about how he met All Might, though he noticed that the man looked strangely nervous during the story. Eventually, it started getting late. Izuku was supposed to stay overnight at the hospital to make sure there weren't any complications, and was going to be released tomorrow if everything went well.
"I should probably be going soon." Yagi-san said, looking at his watch as he stood up, "Visiting hours are almost over."
"I'm sorry I kept you so long, Yagi-san." Izuku replied, "You didn't have to stay as long as you did."
"I was here because I wanted to be." Yagi-san put his hand on Izuku's head and ruffled the teen's hair.
"Even still," Inko said, "I'm sure you want to head home and get a fresh pair of clothes. Your current ones are still damp from us, um, crying on you." She blushed slightly and looked away in embarrassment.
"Yes, I probably should get changed again." Yagi-san said, "I hope you get better soon. Sleep well."
Get changed again? Oh, that's right, Izuku hadn't noticed before, but Yagi-san was wearing a different outfit now than he had been on the train. Before he had been wearing a white t-shirt.
Just like All Might...
Me: Alright, finish writing the chapter. It's already taken you far longer than is reasonable to write this one.
Also Me: Or, you could binge read the last third of Stone Ocean in a single night.
Deer Gods, this chapter was hard to write. I'm just, really bad at these kinds of scenes in particular. Not helping matters further is the fact I know exactly nothing about hospital and police procedure, so I get really nervous writing any scenes involving those. Honestly, I'm not very happy with the end result of this chapter.
Also, I'm worried my writing style is normally too detached for the type of PoV I'm trying to go for in this story, but at the same time I'm afraid I overcorrect and it winds up being melodramatic.
Having Inko describe Toshinori as an old man felt a little odd, since he's probably only about ten years older than her. But, appearance wise it's really hard to tell how old he is due to how unhealthy he looks, so I could easily see someone assuming he's way older than he actually is.
Not mentioned in the chapter since it really wasn't important, but I imagine the doctor who worked on Izuku basically had a weaker version of Recovery Girl's quirk. It doesn't heal as quickly, and he also has to be more careful when he uses it or the patient will heal wrong. If someone broke their arm, he'd have to set the bone before using his quirk, whereas Recovery Girl can just kiss them and their arm would snap back into place.
Bakugou will finally show back up in the next chapter.
