Soon, they were over the coordinates. He was right. This battle just got brutal. Even from their high altitude, they could tell the fighting below was bad. Very bad. Grenades were flying and they were surrounded.
"Ok, Snipe, you said you were a medic right?" Plank questioned, quickly analyzing the scene.
"Yeah, that's what I was trained for."
"Does anyone else know advanced first-aid?"
Everyone raised a hand. Good. Mliss was thorough then,
"That's good. Ok, when we get down there, Snipe, you see to the worst of the wounded. Everyone else's job is to destroy any droids that look like they will immediately be harmful. We're trying to push them back so they can't harm anyone. Once we've done that, the rest of you besides Sly will tend to the wounded. Sly and I will press them further. Sounds like a plan?"
"Yes," Sly said slowly." That'll work."
Gliders voice came over the speakers, "We'll touch down in a few seconds, be ready."
They picked their blasters out of their holsters, ready for the fight ahead. They had never been in a real battle. Now was the true test. Could they work under the pressure of a battle while their brothers lives were on the line?
...
Wolffe could hear his brothers dying. There cries filled his ears. He cursed fiercely, he should have never sent XYZ elsewhere. They could have helped... But he couldn't have predicted the ambush...Though that wouldn't stop his brothers death.
XYZ was never going to make it in time. Already half of his company was injured and a quarter of that was dead. The Wolfpack was standing firm though. The light for his men to feed off of.
Then a call came from one of his brothers, "Grenades!"
Wolffe automatically hit the floor along with most of the others. The grenades flew wildly, filling the world around him with debris and plastoid. A few unlucky troopers screamed as the grenades hit. He jumped up, still dazed, then his eyes fell on Boost.
"No no no!"
He was lying deathly still with shrapnel pieces littered through his chest. Wolffe ran over to him and tore off his helmet and gasped. He was very pale. His eyes were partly open but he wasn't responding. He needed a medic Now! But they didn't have any to spare. Wolffe looked down at his brother, they had lost this battle...he couldn't do anything to change that. Boost had gone through so much with him...He wasn't giving up on him now.
He looked away and held his blaster firmly. If this was it, he was going to go with a fight.
Then he heard the sound of a ship and he looked up. His heart lept. XYZ! They made it!
XYZ jumped the last few feet to the floor and tore down the droids closest to them. Wolffe knelt back down next to Boost. He bit his lip as Boost's breath grew shallow, then XYZ's sniper was next to him.
"I can help him, I'm a medic." He said, Without waiting for his consent, he took out a medkit and got to work. "I've got him," He continued," Your men need you."
Wolffe nodded, he knew it was true. He stood up and charged, joining XYZ. He noted their tactics, they were pushing the droids back to defend the injured.
Plank ducked and weaved, sneaking blaster bolts onto the vulnerable points on the battle droids. Crusher unleashed waves of blaster bolts, destroying the droids as they came. Sly and Camo were flitting around, their shadows the only indication they were there. Wolffe knew that the battle would be over soon. XYZ was truly a perfect team.
Soon the droids were pressed backwards. And there was no droids left but the ones in the far off distance. Only then, Wolffe turned and ran back to where Boost was lying.
...
Plank finished fighting his last battle droid and looked around. When he saw there was no more droids, he walked over to where Wolffe and Snipe was kneeling near a trooper.
He seemed to be bady injured. Snipe had it covered though. Plank turned on his private comlink to signal the rest of XYZ.
"Do you remember the plan?"
"Of course," Sly said, grimness in his voice. He had never seen so much death. None of them had. Nor had they felt so helpless.
"Then let's leave now. The rest of you, get to work."
Plank turned to go when Wolffe looked up from the trooper.
"Where are you going?"
His tone was suspicious but that was most likely due to his worry for the trooper.
"Sly and I are going to keep pushing the droids back. We're all medically trained so Crusher and Camo are going to stay here and help."
Wolffe took one more look at the still trooper then stood up.
"I'll join you."
His tone left no room for argument. Plank turned around with Sly and Wolffe close behind him.
They headed over the rocky terrain, destroying droids as the came. Sly went ahead to scout, giving warnings where droids were hiding. Plank sighed, the mission hadn't gone completely to plan but it wasn't a complete failure. They hadn't been where they were needed and it was gutting. They could have helped their brothers...But they couldn't. He would have to stay strong for his team, though he was also new to this, he had to comfort them. He would stay strong.
...
Sly wove through the rocks, smiling slightly at every pool of lava. Camo would LOVE this. It was a nice distraction. Sure none of them were injured, but they weren't there when the 104th had needed them.
Snipe, Camo and Crusher could help the injured but he would stop anyone else getting injured.
He snarled as two droids came into his sights and they were dismantled in seconds. His comlink flashed and Planks voice came on the private channel. Unlike the public one, this wasn't recorded at all. Anything could be said on it.
"Hey Sly, how are you doing?"
Plank wasn't in Commander mode anymore, he was his brother. The clumsy one he met in Kamino's halls.
"Fine." He replied. Plank didn't need to carry his burden.
"Sly," His voice was a sigh, "You can't carry the weight of the war yourself."
Sly frowned, how had he known? That was exactly what he was planning to do. In not so many words.
"I just...We are supposed to help people. We couldn't help anyone today."
"Wolffe would disagree. We just got the casualty count."
Sly held his breath, Please let it not be high!
"We lost fifteen men, the rest are injured but stable."
Sly gaped.
"No way!"
"Yes, way! So keep your chin up, brother. Think of Camo's face when he sees all this lava!"
Sly laughed, yes, Camo would LOVE it.
"Thank's Plank. You're a good Commander."
Plank chuckled on the other end of the line.
"You sound surprised?"
Sly grinned, "Who isn't surprised?"
A playful sigh came, "True true. By the way, I think the droids originated from somewhere around here."
Sly looked around, barely realizing where he was. He then yelped as he realized that he was standing on some lava.
"Plank, don't tell Camo, but I think our armour is lava proof."
Plank laughed heartily at the other end of the line.
"I won't tell Camo."
"Won't tell me what?" Camo's voice came.
"NOTHING!" Sly said at the same time as Plank.
Camo sounded suspicious, "Um-hm. I will get to the bottom of this."
"Where are you Camo?" Plank asked professionally. Sly resisted the urge to snicker, that just reminded him of the mynocs.
"The others have been taken back to our base. We're coming to join you."
There was a seconds silence as Plank considered this information.
"Ok, but do NOT get distracted."
"Does that mean there's lava!?" Camo said excitedly.
"Yes but NO distractions."
Sly could hear Camo sigh.
"Ok..."
They ended their conversation and Sly turned a corner before completely backtracking.
"Kriff that's a lot of droids." He muttered. "Uh, Plank, I found their base."
"What are the coordinates?"
Sly gave them and slowly backed away from the base. Right into two droids.
"Hey! It's a clone!"
"No, it's not," Sly said.
They looked at each other confused. Sly took that moment to destroy both of them. But that alerted the other clankers.
"Destroy the clone!"
Sly let out a small yelp as 50 droids came around the corner and started towards him. He tilted his helmet to the side slightly and became invisible, but the blaster shots still skimmed his armour. He turned into a small divot and held his blasters ready.
Then he looked up and saw the barrel of a gun aimed at his head.
"Ok Kriff."
Then the droid slumps forward as a well places shot hit its neck. Sly looked around and saw Plank, Camo and Wolffe barrelling towards the droids. Thank the Force!
"Nice timing brothers!"
Plank nodded to him, charging down droids besides Wolffe. Sly grinned, this would be done swiftly and soon.
Camo glided over to him.
"You alright brother? That was a close one."
"I'm fine, thanks. Let's finish this."
Sly could tell his younger brother was grinning when he nodded. Sly grinned back, he loved his squad and they were going to help fix this. They wouldn't leave a single droid to hurt any more of their brothers.
