The halls of Hogwarts were empty as the Golden Trio made their way to the Great Hall. They were running late for dinner after Hermione wouldn't stop hounding Harry about his scarred hand. After finally putting that conversation to rest before Ron "died of starvation", they quickly headed down the hall.

"Harry, please, you need to let Madame Pomfrey look at your hand" Hermione said, concern lacing her voice. Or, he had though they had finished this conversation. Harry felt his already bad mood souring. He turned to glare at Hermione.

"Would you stop bringing that up already?" Harry shot back at her. He paused, and took a breath, letting his shoulders slump. "Look, let's just drop it for now". Hermione looked like she was about to interrupt when Ron suddenly stopped.

"Well speak of the devil" Ron muttered. Harry peered around the corner to see what Ron was looking at. He saw the very reason his hand was in so much pain. Professor Umbridge was in conversation with one of the guards. What was his name again? Frog or something?

As if reading his thoughts, Hermione whispered "That's Toad! What is he doing with Umbridge?" The trio hid behind the corner to watch the conversation play out.

Umbridge was facing Toad, her back towards them. She stood up straight, trying to stand tall in the face of the guard's imposing height, as if to intimidate him.

"Now mister… Toad was it?" Disdain laced her voice.

"Yes, I Toad" the guard replied, seemingly unconcerned with Umbridge if his slouched posture said anything.

Umbridge cleared her throat before speaking again. "As the newly appointed High Inquisitor," and Harry saw her chest puff up with a feeling of superiority at the title "I must ask you to remove your mask. How can I be expected to allow you to stay here if I don't even know what you look like?"

The guard stared back at her with that creepy blank mask of his, and simply said, "No".

Umbridge's face started to get red. "Excuse me?" she exclaimed.

The guard perked up and replied, "It okay. You excuse." The guard turned as if to leave.

Umbridge looked about ready to hex Toad at his response. Suddenly, her expression morphed into a sickeningly sweet facade. "I see, you must have misunderstood me. With the power granted to me with the title of High Inquisitor, I order you to take off your mask". Toad simply tilted his head in response. Umbridge dropped her act at his lack of response. "Listen here," she sneered, "you -"

Toad interrupted her before she could finish. "I no take off mask. You not - " Toad held his finger out as if motioning to Umbridge to wait. Toad rummaged through his pockets and pulled out a small green book. He leafed through it, mumbling in a foreign language, while Umbridge stood by, getting ready to interrupt him. Just as she was about to start speaking again, the guard suddenly shouted. "Aha!" he exclaimed, pointing at a page in his book. "Employer! You no employer, I no take off mask." Before Umbridge could form a response the guard said "Okay I go do job. Protect children. Goodbye!" And with his cheery response, and a few strange hand signs Harry had seen the guards use before, Toad disappeared, leaving Umbridge to stammer in shock and anger.

Before Umbridge noticed them, Harry and his friends left their hiding spot and continued on to the Great Hall. They walked to dinner in stunned silence. Well, he and Ron did. Hermione was mumbling something about "apparating in Hogwarts" and "needing to go to the library". He tuned her out after that. Harry did think, however, that the guards couldn't be that bad if they could make Umbridge that upset
