He was falling along with the debris, not quite aware of anything else besides falling. Everything was being played in slow motion - the debris and himself.
So this is how I die, because of some stupid squad of incapable troopers.
He could now see Plank standing up again, helmet off, on the edge of the building. In the milliseconds that he saw him, he noticed the determined look on his face. Mentally, Wolffe scoffed. What would determination do now? Then Wolffe closed his eyes, not wanting to watch the ground growing increasingly closer.
Then everything stopped. The falling stopped . Wait, had he hit the ground already? He didn't feel any pain...
Slowly, he cracked open an eye, then gasped. He was floating, mid-air, along with the debris.
Oh! General Koon must be nearby!
Wolffe dared to turn his head slightly to see his general, but there was no one in sight. Just the black plains. Then he looked back at Plank, and his mouth dropped open.
That's… impossible.
Plank had his hand outstretched, and his eyes closed. His expression was both peaceful and concentrating, and he had his brows furrowed ever so slightly.
He's Force-sensitive…Ha! I knew it! That's how Plank knew that the lava was going to explode through the entrance before it happened!
Plank slowly twisted his hand, and Wolffe felt himself being pulled back to the roof. The pumice and smoke had yet to clear, so the others had no view of the Commander's feat.
The debris that wasn't in immediate danger of hitting Wolffe dropped away. In a few slow seconds, Plank physically reached out to grab his arm and pulled him away from the edge.
Wolffe stumbled for a second, regaining his equilibrium, then he straightened up, turning to Plank. Plank had replaced his helmet, so his expression was utterly unreadable.
"Thank you," Wolffe said, meaning every word of it. Plank had obviously not wanted anyone to know, so saving him was a risk.
It was literally impossible. How could...
Plank just nodded in reply, maybe too nervous about speaking.
Simultaneously, they noticed that the last of the smoke had cleared, the lava flow ceasing in its eruptions.
The rest of XYZ rushed over to them, anxiously.
"How are you not dead!" Sly exclaimed, waving his arms wildly. "You have NO protection!"
Camo held up a device and scanned them, presumably to make sure they were okay.
"We're fine, honest!" Plank said soothingly, apparently having found his voice again.
Wolffe nodded to second that. "Unharmed."
There was a collective sigh of relief from the group of three.
"Wait," Plank said, cocking his head to the side. Wolffe noted that he didn't sound afraid, just curious. "Where's Snipe?"
Sly gestured to the cliff, somewhere behind them. "Oh, he was watching everyone from there. It was high enough above the smoke to see everyone."
…
I suggest giving a tiny little hint that it is now Plank's POV. Maybe this: Plank looked at Sly as the other gestured to the cliff.
"Oh, he was watching everyone from there-"
No. Oh No, this couldn't be happening. Did he…
It got worse.
"It was high enough above the smoke to see everyone."
If Plank wasn't so scared of getting caught, he might have begun running towards the area to which Sly gestured.
Oh no, kriff, what if he knew? And now Wolffe knows!
Wolffe glanced over at him, probably noticing that he'd frozen. Camo looked to him as well, and his concern was evident, as he'd taken his helmet off.
Plank didn't want to worry his youngest brother so turned back to the conversation, not really hearing it.
"We should leave soon. There may be more lava on the way."
Wolffe nodded in agreement and Plank wondered what Wolffe was going to do about his Force-sensitivity. It seemed like Wolffe didn't hate him? And he didn't think of him as a freak?
Camo nodded as well, and Plank was pleased to see him peppy again. Crusher was in front, leading; there was another path that led down that none of them had seen before. They walked in silence.
Then Snipe came down towards them, slipping across a few protruding platforms. Plank held his breath. He'd better not have seen anything. But his fears were realized when Snipe gave him a long look.
"That was a close one, aye, Plank?"
Plank let out a mental sigh.
Oh, Kriff this was going to be hard.
"True," Plank said, keeping his voice neutral.
There was a small, tense silence. Then Plank started walking again, breaking it. Snipe followed, as did the others.
Out of the corner of Plank's eye, he saw Camo and Crusher exchange a glance, and Sly stare hard at his back. Wolffe quickened his pace to match Plank's and turned on a private comm channel between them.
"So, I assume you haven't told anyone?" came Wolffe's gruff voice. For his life, Plank couldn't tell what he was thinking.
This is not good. One day and two people already know my secret! Apparently keeping secrets is not among my many talents.
"No," Plank said, nervously. "I found out yesterday and haven't had the time."
There was a moment of silence, and Plank could feel Wolffe's mixed emotions.
Please don't send me to Kamino. Please don't send me to Kamino.
"You should talk to him," was what Wolffe ended up saying.
Plank swallowed. What a chat to look forward to.
"Um- that, um- I don't think that will go so well." He winced at how shiny that sounded. He was supposed to be a commander!
"You are going to have to, now," Wolffe said pointedly. "It's unavoidable."
Argh! It's true!
"I know that," Plank said gloomily.
There was another pause; it was long enough that Plank, for a second, thought the channel had cut off. Then Wolffe spoke again.
"Plank," he said softly," You love your brothers, right?"
Plank was startled for a second at his kind tone.
So he didn't think he was a freak? Or maybe he's faking?
He glanced over to him. Wolffe was just walking normally.
"Um- of course."
"Then what do you expect them to think? They obviously love you too."
Plank blinked at the question. Sure, he had felt safer around them than ever in his life. Especially Sly, he didn't care how weird he was. Sly still wanted to know him… They knew what it was like to be laughed at and discarded.
"They'll think I'm even more of a freak," Plank admitted. "This squad is made up of rag-tags, but I don't want to be too much."
Wolffe absorbed this knowledge for a second. "From what I've seen, you're a good team. Even if your rag-tags…"
"But . . ." Plank said wistfully. "Every brother is similar to some extent physiologically. This… makes me different on a whole different level-"
He was about to say more when Wolfe's comlink buzzed. Wolffe cut off the private channel to favor the other one.
"Commander Wolffe, I saw the explosion. Are you all alright?" General Plo's concerned voice came through the link.
"Yes, Sir, we're all fine. The droids have been destroyed as well."
There was a laugh. "Well done, all of you. I trust that XYZ was helpful then?"
"Extremely, Sir. They are very competent." Wolffe gave Plank a sideways glance.
"Excellent, Commanders, I'm sending you a transport to pick you up. Do you need reinforcements?"
"No, sir," Wolffe said, turning his head to glance at the smoking building. "As I said, the droids have all been destroyed."
"Very well, it will be here soon."
"Thank you, Sir."
The channel ended. Everyone had been silent as they listened, but now the comm chatter started up again.
...
To the others in XYZ, it was apparent that something happened while the roof was hidden by the pumice. The only question was, what had happened? Camo wanted an answer.
He was the first to turn on the private comm channel. "Um- guys? What's going on?"
Crusher immediately responded. "That's some tension."
"I know! I could cut it with a knife," Sly agreed. "Snipe- what did Plank do?"
There was no reply. There was a light in each of their helmets that showed when people were on the private channel. Both Plank and Snipe knew that they were speaking - neither joined.
"Do you think it's something bad?" Camo asked in a small voice. He liked their Commander! Plank was kind and cared for them. He didn't want Plank to get in trouble! Maybe the whole team would be broken up! The concept was disheartening. XYZ was his home now!
Back on Kamino, Camo was always teased for blending in. He was like every other clone so no one spared him a second glance. But with XYZ they looked at him like he was an individual. Like he was worth being around. They wanted to know him!
Especially Crusher- he's the best.
Camo glanced at the larger clone walking next to him and smiled beneath his helmet. Crusher caught his glance and shoved at his helmet like he was ruffling his hair. That just made Camo beam more.
"Okay, I bet that…" Sly started, trying to lighten the mood a bit. "Plank did something stupid again!"
"Like JUMPING into lava!" Camo had to excitedly input. He really wanted to try that sometime.
"Oh, no," Crusher said, crossing his arms. "No, no-no. You are NOT doing that little Vod."
"My armor is lava proof though!" Camo couldn't help but whine. "I won't be hurt!"
Sly had been quiet until now, just listening, amused at their banter.
"Plank is crazy. Agreed, all?"
Camo nodded and he could see Crusher nodding too.
"So we cannot do every little crazy thing he does." Sly slung his arm around Camo's shoulders, gesturing wildly with his other hand, "Especially jumping into Lava."
Camo had mixed feelings about Sly.
I mean… He's okay, but he is a bit gruff. But if Plank likes him, he must be nice!
"And I will definitely be having a chat with him about the examples he's setting for you," Crusher added on.
Oh, Vod…
Camo didn't want Plank disliking him so he immediately objected, "You don't have to do that-"
But he was cut off by the sound of a transport landing nearby.
"This way," Wolffe called, leading them around a bend. Sure enough, the same transport they had arrived on previously was waiting for them, with Glider still piloting.
"I saw the explosion! I can't believe you're all alive!" Glider exclaimed as they boarded.
"It was a close one," Wolffe said, grabbing a grip.
"It looked like one, Sir."
The transport lifted off the ground. They rode back to their base in silence. Not even the comm channels were active. Just awkward silence. There was a thick tension hovering in the air. No one broke it. They landed back at the base, and after a quick greeting and debriefing from General Koon, they went to settle down.
They were staying in one joint shelter- all of them. They took off their helmets and sat on the makeshift beds. But if they thought the tension on the transport had been bad…
"So…" Camo said, now desperate to break the silence.
You could have heard a pin drop. Snipe was staring at Plank, who was clearly trying to ignore him.
Then Sly stood up. "I am going to the mess. Crusher, Camo, you are coming."
Camo eagerly stood up at the same time as Crusher and all but bolted out of the tent. Whatever they were fighting about, it would NOT be a pretty conversation.
…
Now that the others were gone, Plank was able to talk freely. He sighed at turned his gaze to his staring brother, "Snipe-"
"Nope," Snipe interjected, standing up. "I will speak first."
Plank nodded, dreading what was to come. Snipe started pacing, and spoke fast, almost as though he were ranting.
"Now explain WHY I saw Wolffe FLOAT in mid-air when there was NO Jedi around WHATSOEVER?! And-" He held up a hand when Plank tried to interject. "-YOU were the one HOLDING UP YOUR HAND! LIKE A JEDI!"
Plank stood up and put a hand on Snipe's shoulder to calm him. Snipe seemed as though he were going to jerk away but Plank pushed him down onto one of the beds.
"Look- brother-"
"Are you my brother!?" Snipe snapped. "Because no clone can do that!"
Plank felt like he had been slapped. This was exactly what he'd been afraid of.
"Snipe," Plank said quietly. "I have no idea how this happened. I only found out yesterday."
That seemed to calm Snipe, and he looked into Plank's eyes as if searching for something. "How did you find out?"
Plank sighed and sat next to his brother," I had visions while we were on Siccitas- of what was happening on Kamino."
Snipe's eyes widened as he recalled what Mliss had told them. "Whoa! That must have been freaky!"
Plank nodded, shuddering slightly," It was. All our brothers… That was why I wasn't really sleeping."
"Have you had any more visions?" Snipe seemed eagerly curious now that he knew Plank hadn't been hiding it from them forever. He'd just found out!
"Um-" Plank looked up thoughtfully. "I saw when Mliss was on Kamino and some time… I think it was in the future?"
Now Snipe was looking at him in awe. "Whoa!'
Plank laughed, sincerely glad that the conversation had ended up here. He didn't know what he would do if Snipe hated him.
"Can I tell you a secret?" Plank asked Snipe, blushing as he realized how ridiculous that sounded.
Snipe just nodded rapidly, not caring that they sounded like kids.
"Mliss is going to train me."
Snipes mouth dropped open in surprise," Wha-? I thought you'd be taken back to Kamino for testing."
The thought made Plank's blood run cold and he couldn't help a small shudder. "I thought that too… but I guess I trusted Mliss because, well, she seems nice?"
Snipe laughed. "That's true!"
"So she said that she could train me in secret!" Plank finished, smiling.
To his immense surprise, Snipe pulled him into a hug. Plank reciprocated the hug; though surprising, it was welcome. Then they broke apart.
"I'm sorry for snapping at you," Snipe said, looking guilty. "I know you are my brother." He smiled," And one of my closest."
That made Plank's heart happy and he slung an arm around Snipe's shoulders.
"I'm glad- XYZ is my family now and each of you is special to me."
"So when are you going to tell the others?" Snipe asked, head cocked.
Plank sighed and withdrew his arm. "I don't know… When it's the right time?"
"When's that?"
"I have NO idea."
There was a moment of silence before Snipe spoke. "Well, when you do it- I'll be right there to support you."
Plank smiled. "Thank you, vod."
They hugged again when there was a knock at the tent pole and the rest of XYZ poked their heads in.
"So, I see it has been resolved," Crusher said, a grin on his face.
Sly strolled in. "I'm glad - I could NOT sit through another transport ride like that."
Camo came in with a nod. "I'm glad you made up!"
Plank and Snipe exchanged a smile. Now things could be back to normal. Plank was about to say more when another rap came at the tent pole and Wolffe stepped in.
"Plank, troopers-"
Though he searched for it, Plank could feel no hostile emotions to that phrase. That's a relief!
"I commend you for your job - as well as the whole 304th. We'll be leaving shortly so get ready."
The others not of commander rank snapped to attention.
"Yes, sir."
Plank nodded. "Thank you."
Wolffe nodded and gave Plank a small smile - he knew they had talked it out.
"Oh andLPlank- I'd like to have a word with you in private once we get on the Ship."
Plank's stomach lurched but he kept his voice and face calm when he said,"Of course."
Wolffe nodded and then he left. Snipe glanced at him with apprehension in his eyes, Plank looks back with a reassuring smile that he didn't feel.
