Ever since folklore released in July I've always thought of Kyra and Dimitri when I listen to Betty. For those who don't know, I wrote a story with LuxahHeart called The Parent Trap where her OC Kain and my OC Kyra are Ray and Kai's children who've been separated and not knowing of each other for 14 years. Kyra lived with Kai and was friends with Spencer's and Tala and Bryan's kids while Kain lived with Ray and was friends with all the Blade Breakers' kids. The song Betty just sums up how I imagined a small back story I thought of when it came to Kyra and Dimitri's friendship/crushes on each other before The Parent Trap so I finally got some inspiration and wrote it! Hope everyone likes it and please read The Parent Trap first before reading this so it makes some more sense!
Betty, I won't make assumptions
About why you switched your homeroom, but
I think it's 'cause of me
Betty, one time I was riding on my skateboard
When I passed your house
It's like I couldn't breathe
It was only two weeks into the new year and some how Kyra was already starting the year off horribly. At first she had thought her Winter semester was going to be great. Her homeroom and last class of the day with Dimitri, as he had finally been given the approval to skip a grade, her lunch with both Sven, Dimitri and Tristan, her now official boyfriend after a month of talking. But instead, she walked into her homeroom, eyes darting around looking for her redheaded best friend only to be disappointed when she didn't see him. 'Maybe he was just late?' She thought, until the teacher began to take attendance and Dimitri's name wasn't spoken.
She sighed and shook her head in the passenger seat of her father's car. "This semester was supposed to be amazing and he went and screwed it all up!"
"I'm sure he had a good reason for switching his homeroom, Kyra." Kai responded, keeping eyes on the road but knowing his daughter was rolling her eyes at him.
"Come on dad, it's not just a coincidence that he switched out of both our homeroom and last class of the day together. He's been different since I went public with Tristan." She frowned.
"Well maybe he has a good sense of judgement." Kai suggested.
"You're just saying this because you don't like him." She sighed once more.
"Why would I like him? He's dating my only daughter. No one is ever going to be good enough for you."
Kyra shook her head, looking out the window to see they were going by the house of her uncles and illusive best friend. She could see Tala getting out of the drivers seat of their Range Rover, her lips turning into a small pout as she watched Dimitri get out of the passenger side. This whole situation would've been avoided if she had just been able to be the one to tell him. Instead Sven of course had to run his mouth.
You heard the rumors from Inez
You can't believe a word she says
Most times, but this time it was true
The worst thing that I ever did
Was what I did to you
It was New Years Eve and the Hiwatari, Ivanov-Kuznetov and Petrov clans were celebrating the same way they did every year, spending the entire week at their shared Ski Chalet and ringing in the New Year with a night full of food, family and plenty of alcohol for the adults (and some snuck by the three teens). As Kyra played poker with her father and uncles, Sven had snuck off for a cigarette, bringing a non-smoking Dimitri to suffer the cold with him.
"I don't get why you and my dads like this." Dimitri coughed after trying his first ever drag of a cigarette. "What's appealing about coughing your lungs up just to possibly get cancer down the road?"
"You'll figure it out eventually. Besides, both Kyra and I do it now. You wanna be the odd man out?" Sven shot back with a smirk.
"When it comes to being the only one of us who doesn't eventually get lung cancer, yeah I'm fine with being left out." Dimitri shuttered as he handed the lit cigarette back to Sven to finish off.
"Eh, whatever man. I mean, it's not like you're not already kind of left out anyways. Only single one out of the three of us." Sven shrugged as he went to take another drag.
"Wait, what?" Dimitri cocked his head, a look of confusion painted on his face.
Sven finally realized what he'd said, quickly trying to back track. "Uhhh I mean the only one competing as a single blader in the upcoming tournament." He nervously brought up, not being wrong with the fact that Dimitri was competing alone while him and Kyra had decided to try to enter as a tag team.
"No, that's not what you meant. Spit it out Petrov." Dimitri glared, letting his icy personality make a very rare appearance. He may be shy and timid, but when mad both of his fathers rage showed up, showing that he was indeed their son.
"I've already said enough." Sven put his hands up, trying to act like he wasn't guilty. "She's gonna kill me…"
Dimitri charged inside, catching Kyra right as she was about to get up from the poker table to refresh her sparkling cider.
"Can I talk to you for a minute?" He asked, more demanding than asking.
"Um, sure I guess?" She raised her eyebrow, unsure why her best friend seemed so urgent. The two moved to the upstairs, standing in front of the balcony away from their parents earshot. "What's up?"
"Who are you dating?" Dimitri asked, getting straight to the point.
"What are you talking about?" She questioned, putting her hands on her hips.
"Sven said I'm the only one who's single. He's dating Ana, if you're not single who are you dating?" He demanded.
"That fucking big mouth." She sighed, shaking her head.
"So it is true! Who is it?" He demanded once more.
"Why do you need to know so bad?"
"I'm your best friend. Don't you think I should know who you're dating?" He shot back.
"Fine! If you need to know that bad, it's Tristan." She revealed.
Dimitri scoffed, rolling his eyes before looking away from her to not reveal how much she'd just hurt him by saying that. "Seriously? That guy?"
"What's wrong with him?" She frowned. Why was her best friend reacting so poorly? She knew he wouldn't have been thrilled since he was typically the last one who wanted to expand their social group, but she didn't think he would've reacted like this.
"Are you serious? He's the type of person we shit talk all the time! He's just so spoiled and entitled. Seriously Kyra, you could do better."
"Oh really? How so?" She asked, raising her eyebrows at him. It wasn't like her best friend to be so judgmental. Unless….no. If he liked her he would've said it by now, she thought to herself.
"Like….like…." He stammered. 'Like me.' He thought, keeping those words to himself. "You could just do better than that prick, okay?"
Kyra crossed her arms. "Well, I'm sorry but he's who I'm dating. Actually, he's my boyfriend." She revealed, almost out of spite.
"Since when?" Dimitri asked, trying to keep the heartbreak from showing on his face or through his voice.
"Just before we left. Now if you'll excuse me, I told Tristan I'd face time him at midnight." She said, almost sounding like she was trying to get a rise out of him before turning on her heel to go back to the party.
Dimitri stood there, finally letting the emotions he was feeling fully hit him. She was really with someone else. He didn't act quick enough, and now she was with someone else.
Betty, I know where it all went wrong
Your favorite song was playing
From the far side of the gym
I was nowhere to be found
I hate the crowds, you know that
Plus, I saw you dance with him
"I don't know why I even bothered coming to this." Dimitri sighed, staring at the lit up banquet hall full of their classmates. It was the night of the Valentine's Day dance and it seemed like everyone here had a date but him. He wasn't originally going to go but Sven convinced him he'd meet someone. Little did he know the only person Dimitri wanted to be dancing with was already here dancing with someone else.
"Oh come on, I know it doesn't look like it but there's tons of available girls here! You just have to search around. Listen, I'll be your wingman. We can-" Sven started.
But Dimitri wasn't listening to him. Instead he had found the worst thing he could've imagined seeing tonight. Kyra, but of course she wasn't alone. Hooked on her arm was Tristan, dressed up in a suit and a bright red bowtie to match her sparkly red cocktail dress. His eyes locked on her, not being able to stop staring at her with her hair curled, red lipstick and dress shining every time the disco ball hit it. She was beautiful. But she was here with him.
As if whoever was running the music knew that Kyra had shown up, the song Beautiful Stranger by Halsey began to play. Dimitri watched as her face lit up, pulling Tristan to the dance floor as the two began to sway, arms wrapped around each other just like all the other couples on the dance floor.
"Of course they had to play this song…it's her favourite." Dimitri muttered.
"What?" Sven asked, missing the redhead's words.
"I said I think I'm going to go." He responded.
"Aw come on man, you don't like my wingman idea?" Sven frowned. His other best friend sure was being a stick in the mud lately.
"You know how much I hate crowds. We both knew this wasn't going to be my scene. Plus Dad is here to get me anyways." Dimitri brushed him off, not lying when he was saying that Bryan was outside.
"Alright, your loss. Tell Uncle Bryan I say hi." The older boy responded, before seeing his girlfriend luring him to the dancefloor. "See ya Dimka."
As Dimitri walked out he didn't see Kyra watch him leave, her mouth turning to a small frown as she saw her distant best friend walk away.
I was walking home on broken cobblestones
Just thinking of you when she pulled up like
A figment of my worst intentions
She said "James, get in, let's drive"
Those days turned into nights
Slept next to her, but
I dreamt of you all summer long
"Hey, so my parents are out of town for the night. Want to come over?" Tristan asked. The last bell had just rung and the couple was standing in front of Kyra's locker as she tucked away the last of her school things before heading home.
"I want to but my dad, you know? He'd be pissed if he knew I was going over with just you being there." She sighed, not wanting to add to her dad's current stressors. He was already dealing with a big change over at work, he didn't need to be arguing with her on where she was going and who was or wasn't going to be there.
"Just tell him you're at Sven's. Didn't you say he was dealing with a ton at work anyways? He's not going to question it. Plus you stay over there all the time." Tristan pointed out, trying to work his convincing magic on his very stubborn girlfriend.
"Yeah, I stay over there when we're training or have plans with Dimitri also involved. Neither of which are currently a thing with Dimitri always being MIA and the blading season being done until our summer tournaments." She countered.
"Pleaseeee babe? Do it for me?" He pleaded.
She sighed, throwing her locker door shut. "Fine. Let me just call him and let him know, then we can catch a ride to your place with Sven so it doesn't feel like I'm totally lying,"
After a phone call to Kai, a quick drive home with Sven and some dinner, the couple had found themselves watching a movie on the couch in Tristan's basement. Well, as much watching as could be done while making out. Tristan pushed Kyra back onto the couch, looking into her eyes before touching the bottom hem of her shirt.
"Are you sure about this?" He asked.
Her body was tingling, almost aching to be touched. She leaned up to steal a kiss from his lips, laying back again and giving him a nod.
He smiled, starting to pull her shirt off. "You're so fucking beautiful."
The two laid in his bed, Tristan sound asleep, arms wrapped around Kyra as she laid wide awake. When she'd thought of her first time, she didn't expect to feel this weird afterwards. Did she do something wrong? Did he? From what Sven described, sex was supposed to be this passionate, amazing thing. But to her, finally having sex with Tristan just…was that. It was just sex. Shouldn't she be feeling happy after sleeping with her boyfriend? But the only thing that went through her mind was how she wished this would've been Dimitri.
'I should've had my first time with him.' She thought. It was her choice to start dating Tristan, even though she knew she had feelings for Dimitri. 'But that would've been such a mess. What if something happened and we broke up? That's fifteen years of friendship out the window.'
'But look at the two of you now. He hasn't spoken a word to you since New Years Eve.' She also thought to herself. It was then that she knew what she had to do.
Betty, I'm here on your doorstep
And I planned it out for weeks now
But it's finally sinkin' in
Betty, right now is the last time
I can dream about what happens when
You see my face again
"Dimitri! Someone's here to see you!" Tala's voice called.
Dimitri sighed, pausing his game of Call Of Duty he was playing with Sven. It obviously couldn't be Sven, as he was gaming with him, which meant it could only be one person. "If it's who I think it is, I'm not coming down." He yelled back. His fathers knew all about his crush on Kyra, having to deal with his moping and slumping around for the past three months.
"DIMITRI ALEXANDER IVANOV-KUZNETOV, GET YOUR ASS DOWN HERE RIGHT NOW." Tala yelled back.
'Shit. Full name means business.' Dimitri frowned, knowing if he didn't go down his papa would force him downstairs himself.
Dimitri went down the stairs, stopping at the second last stare before his eyes landed on his raven haired best friend. "What are you doing here?" He sneered. He hated being so distant from her, but it was the only thing he could do to protect himself against the heartbreak that seeing her caused him now that she wasn't single.
"We need to talk." She responded, Tala taking that as his que to make himself scarce (although he'd be eavesdropping from the dining room regardless.)
"No way. We haven't spoken in three months and you think it's cool to just show up at my house and demand we talk now? Don't you and Tristan have some sort of party you should be getting ready for or something?" He asked aggressively.
"I broke up with him." She said bluntly.
"What?" He stammered, staring at her as if she had three heads.
"I said, I broke up with him." She repeated.
"When?" He asked, still baffled by her words.
"This morning. I didn't really know where else to go, so I just came here." She said quietly, looking at the ground.
Dimitri's eyes softened, seeing how distraught the older girl was. "Hey, come here." He said, pulling her into his embrace.
Her eyes went wide before settling into his embrace. "Does this mean we're friends again?"
"I know I've been an ass these past few months, but I've never stopped being your friend." He responded back.
"Glad you said that cause yes, you've been an ass." She smirked, giving him a swift punch to the arm while he was least expecting it.
"Hey!" He frowned, giving her a hurt expression.
"Bet you didn't miss that." She smirked.
He rubbed his arm, giving her a small smile. "Didn't miss that, but I did miss you."
Yeah, I showed up at your party
Will you have me? Will you love me?
Will you kiss me on the porch
In front of all your stupid friends?
If you kiss me, will it be just like I dreamed it?
Will it patch your broken wings?
I'm only seventeen, I don't know anything
But I know I miss you
'God dammit Kain. You couldn't just leave well alone?' Kyra thought as her and Dimitri awkwardly swayed. What was supposed to be her other father's wedding had instead turned into a celebration party of Gabe finally getting what was coming to him. Just as she thought she could finally breathe and enjoy things a little, Kain of course had to meddle and make it so her and Dimitri were dancing together. The first minute or so of the song was awkwardly silent between the two as Dimitri focused on leading her.
"I thought you didn't want this?" Dimitri asked, turning his gaze to look Kyra in her crimson eyes.
She bit her lip, following his lead in the slow dance as she tried to think of how to word her feelings. "I do…I'm just…"
"Scared. I know…I am too." He responded, finishing her sentence as he had been their whole lives.
"I just don't want to lose what we have, is that so wrong? You're my best friend. I don't know what I'd do if I lost you." She confessed. So they were finally having this long overdue talk.
He shook his head, tightening his hold on his raven haired best friend. "I don't want to lose you at all. You mean too much to me…I'd lose my mind if I lost you." He said softly, looking so honest and love stricken.
She didn't know if it was how gorgeous he looked while looking at her with those beautiful lavender eyes or the words that came out of his mouth but she threw all caution to the wind with what she decided to do next. "Then don't." She responded, tilting her head up and softly kissing him for the first time. It didn't take long for him to kiss her back, the two so caught up in their first kiss that they forgot they weren't the only ones on the dance floor. The two only separated when a very loud "WOOOO" was heard, causing them to look over to see her brother and his papa high fiving as his dad shook his head and slapped some money into Kain's open hand.
"Did he seriously bet on us?" She asked, shaking her head as if she didn't expect this from her new found little brother.
"And my dad had to pay out to him." Dimitri cringed, giving his dad an uncomfortable stare.
Kyra turned her head back to face the redhead, taking his chin in her hand and turning his face back to her. "Just ignore them. They're a bunch of kids." She smirked before kissing him again, resulting in even more cheering from Tala and Kain.
