Title: Honest
Summary: Sugawara isn't being honest with his teammates or best friends as he's been telling them he's ok with all the changes happening on the Karasuno volleyball. Daichi can tell and wants to know what's wrong. Asahi is there to give him a hint.
Pairing: Daichi/Sugawara, hint of Asahi/Noya
A/N: This is my first time writing in a while and I couldn't get this story out of my head so I had to write it down! Enjoy!
"Asahi, have you noticed something wrong with Suga?" Daichi asked Asahi one day out of the blue.
It was their first lunch time since they had their practice games with Nekoma and the captain and ace were eating lunch together on the roof. Normally, they'd be a trio but their vice-captain had to talk with a teacher during lunch so probably wouldn't make it to join them.
The Ace blinked at the sudden change in conversation, then looked at his captain thoughtfully, "Wrong, how?"
Daichi sighed and stared down at his bento box in his lap, "He just seems, off. I'm not sure how to describe it. I mean he did just give up his starting position he's had the last two years" He paused, "even for someone like Suga, who's selfless to a fault, it could be effecting him. It's still fresh." He shook his head and looked back up at Asahi, "but it seems, more than that."
Asahi stayed quiet for a moment. He took another bite of his rice ball and debated on what to say to his friend. He had an idea what was wrong with Sugawara but it wasn't his place especially if he ended up not right about his assumption. But he can tell his captain has definitely thought this through even if he still has missed a key component.
"Have you talked to Suga about it?" Asahi decided to ask first. Daichi shook his head. Asahi sighed, he didn't think so.
Asahi may be timid sometimes but he wasn't blind. He saw how upset Daichi's face became as they both overheard Sugawara plead to their coach to give whoever was the better chance at the team's victory the official position, even if it wasn't him. Asahi saw how his best friends looked at each other on a daily basis, how they complement each other, how in sync they were. It was sometimes scary, like they shared a brain. But you don't get the nicknames mom and dad without there being a little more to it.
Because of that, was why he thought he knew what was wrong with Sugawara. He thought about their last win together as a team when they were second years.
Flashback
The silver setter shouted Asahi's name as he set up the final spike for their Ace. Asahi came almost out of nowhere and spiked the ball passed the wall of defenders to a perfect open spot on the court for match point.
Both boys shouted in excitement as their combo hit the court with the most amazing bounce sound. Their team rushing to celebrate their friends and the victory. Asahi watched as Daichi was first to Sugawara as he picked up his friend in excitement! It wasn't the first time that Daichi was at Sugawara's side the minute he did something well, very much like a proud boyfriend, but it was the first time of contact like that.
"That was amazing!" Daichi shouted still holding one arm around Sugawara's shoulders as he put him down the rest of the team circled together. The blush was evident on Daichi's face but he wasn't showing a hint of changing how excited he was. Sugawara though, he was redder than tomato but not once did he try to shake Daichi or his smile off him, seemingly enjoying the spotlight he gained from his friend. Asahi couldn't help but smile at the scene before submitting to his own adrenaline to celebrate. His two best friends were meant for each other, one day, one will cave.
End Flashback
Well Asahi wasn't going to mess with fate and tell him. But what's wrong with giving him something to think about? "Well think Daichi. Why would losing his position hurt him so much, if he himself gave it up?" although maybe that was a little too much because Daichi looks pissed (or is that envy?) at me. Asahi thought quickly almost wishing he didn't tempt things. Daichi gets scary when he's upset (or jealous).
"Ehh? Do you know something I don't know? Asahi, is Sugawara confiding in you more than he does me?" Daichi asked upset lacing his tone. Staring Asahi down fiercely wondering why his best friend wouldn't confide in him.
With his hands up defensively, Asahi shook his head and smiled sadly at his friend. "No, Sugawara isn't confiding in me over you. I'm just an outsider looking in so I can see things a little more objectively"
If Daichi wasn't confused before, he was now. Asahi taking pity on his friend, placed a hand on his shoulder. "Think of all the good times Sugawara had as being the setter for our team. Our couple wins."
Daichi thought about the wins they shared. There wasn't a crazy amount because of Karasuno's dry spell but when they had one, Sugawara shined. Eyes were on him and Asahi as they ended sets with a crazy combo and Daichi was always there to cheer his friend on, always praising Sugawara first.
Flashback
Daichi saw the spiked ball coming his way, he got under it and received it perfectly. The ball floating its way to Sugawara to set. He did, beautifully in the air. Daichi watched as the ball elegantly bounced off Sugawara's fingertips, the look of concentration on his face as he does so. Daichi never even sees Asahi spike it over the net for their final point and win because he's too busy being memorized by the silver setter.
As the ball made the crisp sound of bouncing on the other side and the whistle to signal match point, the team erupted in cheers. Daichi couldn't contain himself! He ran the short distance to Sugawara and picked him up excitedly, shouting words of excitement.
Realizing he just picked up his best friend in front of everybody, he quickly put him down, blush on his cheeks. His body just moved on its own. Daichi didn't want the moment to end though, so he settled for an arm around Suga's shoulders as he used his celebration as his cover. "That was amazing!" He yelled in a celebratory voice as the rest of the team circled together.
Sugawara's blush very evident as they are celebrating. Daichi just assumed from the all the attention. But he didn't care, he never cared because it was a great excuse for him to that close to and touch his beautiful best friend.
End Flashback
Asahi watched his friend that was deep in thought. He has watched for too long as his two friends danced around their feelings for each other. Maybe this will finally give them the push they need. Asahi looked at the clock and realized they need to get back to class. "We should get going now, but keep an eye on him. If he's in a funk, you're the one who could pull him out of it, dad" Asahi added the last nickname with a snicker as they headed back to class.
*~*x o x o~*~
A loud grunt came from the gym as well as the sound of a palm slamming against a volleyball. Everyone had gone home except Sugawara. After practice he sent everyone off without having them clean up. Saying he's got it and wanted to practice a little while more on his own. Normally, Hinata and Kageyama would jump at the chance to stay back and get more tosses in but the far off look on their Vice-Captains eyes as he sent them off stopped them from pursuing this idea. There will be another day. He seemed he needed to be alone.
Once he was alone (or so he thought) Sugawara set up his targets and had the basket of volleyballs near him. He was finally allowed to be alone with his thoughts. It's official, Kageyama will be taking his place as setter for the Karasuno Volleyball team. He gave it up. But it wasn't the idea of losing his position that was getting to him. He wasn't being passive aggressive when he was all for the best person for the position and wanting the team to be on the court as long as possible. And if that best person was Kageyama, so be it. Him and Hinata are their chance of making it to Nationals. Their fire. But a part of him was going to hurt, he was only human.
It's funny. Sugawara laughed bitterly to himself as his flipped the volleyball in his hands before giving it a bounce to the floor. His pain doesn't come from not being able to play his position anymore or even losing it to a first year. Not saying that he didn't like setting, he LOVED setting with a passion but he was a team player and would go where he was needed. He was happy and grateful that he got to be the official setter the last two years, since he earned a starting spot his first year as the team's setter, and if this was a chance for them to win, he wants to take it.
His pain. He barely could admit it to himself, he knew how selfish he sounds, but he just didn't want to not be seen by Daichi anymore. He loved the extra moments Daichi gave him, the extra spotlight that came only from him. The confidence booster that comes when Daichi brags proudly about his skills. Tears started forming in eyes as he thought about the moments. The touches when he did something well. His over excitement hugs that always had Suga blushing. He was embarrassed with himself for feeling so selfish but, most likely that all will stop now. He thought.
He won't be Daichi's spotlight. Their captain's attention will go somewhere else. Sugawara was selfish. And he hated himself for it at the moment. So much he didn't want to share that dark side of him with anyone. Which is why he is here. After he sent everyone home. Alone. He throws the ball into the air. Working through all the emotions on a volleyball. He pulled his hand back. All his sadness, his anger and all the guilt that he feels. WHACK! He slams the ball with all his might before falling to the ground in a fit of sobs.
*~*x o x o~*~
Daichi watched silently from the locker room as Sugawara tossed another ball in the air and served it over the net to a specific water bottle on the other side. In fact, the entire side of the court was covered in water bottles set up as Suga aimed for a different one each serve.
Daichi remembered the first time he saw Sugawara serve fighting for his spot as a first year. It was already known that Suga was a talented setter and impressed their senpais. He was basically a shoo in for the starter spot on the team but they wanted to see if he was more than a one trick pony. He was. And to Daichi, it was beautiful. He was practically floating in the air as he slammed the ball over the net with such quiet control. As if controlling exactly where the ball is going to land. It was the moment he knew he fell for his best friend. But he never acted on it. There was no way his best friend would love him back. Surely, he'd have picked up on that, right? "I'm just an outsider looking in so I can see things a little more objectively" Asahi's words echoed in his head from earlier. What did that mean?
A loud WHACK was heard to bring Daichi out of his thoughts as he saw the volleyball Sugawara just hit fly across the room with uncontrolled aim or speed, something unlike him. It slammed into the wall across the net from Suga and Daichi watched as his best friend crumbled to the ground silently sobbing.
Daichi ran over to his friend and immediately pulled him into his arms and rocked him while he cried. "I'll wait until you're done, take your time" Daichi whispered as his continued to hold the boy, who fought for only a second then ultimately gave into the sobs. Normally Daichi would be freaking out and blushing with having his best friend in this position but all he could think about was helping he friend at the moment. Embarrassment will surely come later. Sugawara, having already lost control, continued to cry into Daichi's shoulder.
"I'm not completely sure what's got you like this, but I'm here" Daichi whispered some more stroking his silver haired friend as his sobbing started to slow down. They just stayed together not really knowing how long. Sugawara's hiccups started signaling his sobs were done. "I'm sorry" Sugawara mumbled weakly but didn't move, "I'm pathetic"
"Not even a little bit," Daichi said softly smiling at the boy in his arms even if he didn't look up. "You are allowed to be human. No matter how angelic you look." He chuckled softly to himself, practically able to see the shocked face of the man buried in his shoulder. With his decision in mind, he went on to spill more of his guts. "Whether you are on the court or on the sidelines, you're my partner. You are a valuable asset to our team. You keep us together." Daichi tighten his grip on Sugawara, who hasn't moved from his spot. "Also, now you're our secret weapon! When you enter the court, no one will know what to expect and you'll destroy them!" He got a little excited and let one arm go of Suga to pump his fist in the air.
Daichi could feel a fresh batch of tears dampening his shoulder but it was softly. He wrapped his arm that was in the air back around Sugawara. Now he was going to be blunt and hopefully Suga doesn't hate him after this. But if he read between the lines of what Asahi said… this is what they both need. "One thing you need to know Koshi," Sugawara's breathe caught at the sound of his name from Daichi's lips. "Even if you don't have everyone else's eyes all the time anymore, you will always have mine"
Sugawara's head finally snapped up to look Daichi in the eyes. He noticed his captain had a beautiful tinge of red covering his cheeks and nose as Suga realized what he heard was real.
Daichi looked into the tearful eyes of Sugawara. His face flushed from sobbing and hair disheveled, his mouth hung slightly open as he was putting everything together but he never looked so beautiful. Daichi leaned in and capture his vice captain's lips within his own. Sugawara responded eagerly kissing his captain back with everything he had. When they pulled apart they were both panting.
"I made the decision." Sugawara started to open up and admit, "The only person I can blame for my pain was myself. I already know everyone felt bad for me but I kept reassuring them that this is what I wanted. Which it is." He quickly added because he never wanted that up for debate but then his voice got soft again, "But I didn't want share the rest, no one needs to feel guilty because of my selfishness."
Daichi listened as Sugawara shared the demons that were plaguing him. "You are allowed to feel both." He told him honestly after the silver haired man paused. But that seemed to add fire to the quiet voice of his best friend.
"Not when the reason I'm upset has nothing to do with Volleyball!" He confessed
"Me?" Daichi put 2 and 2 together as the other boy looked away embarrassed. Sugawara couldn't look Daichi in the eyes anymore. Well, that won't do. Daichi reached across the short distance to Sugawara's chin and made him look in his eyes. "I wish you weren't in this much pain because of me. But I can't say I'm not happy my feelings are not one sided."
The kiss already shocked Sugawara and Daichi's eyes on him admission he thought maybe he misheard but he couldn't believe anymore the situation he was in. Was he dreaming? Daichi's lips on his again confirmed, he was not dreaming. Daichi was kissing him and reassuring him. As cliché as it sounds, Daichi was taking his pain away. Sugawara lifted his hands to the sides of Daichi's face and deepened the kiss.
When they broke apart Daichi looked deep in Sugawara's eye. Breathing a little heavy, "I love you, Koshi"
"I love you too." Sugawara replied smiling the first real smile he's had in days, "Thank you for not leaving me today"
"I was never planning on it." Daichi said standing up and pulling Sugawara with him. "Just please don't ever shut me out like that again. Never be embarrassed with how you feel. We will figure what it is out, together."
Sugawara shook his head and promised, "I won't."
"Good!" Daichi smiled, "Now let's get this place packed up and get you home! It's getting late."
Sugawara chucked at him starting to sound like his playful self again, "Already sounding like a dutiful boyfriend, eh Daichi?" he joked before swatting Daichi's butt and running to pick up the water bottles he set up.
This action and words brought flustered Daichi back. As his red face returned with a vengeance. Sugawara looked back to see Daichi's red face and couldn't help but laugh a little harder. He turned back to the recycling bin and dumped the water bottles in. Once the bottles left his hand, he felt Daichi arms wrap around his waist and pull him in close to him.
"Watch it," Daichi whispered hotly in Suga's ear, "because my face isn't red with thoughts of anything innocent as being a dutiful boyfriend. In fact, I would rather be very irresponsible boyfriend right now." The full comprehension of his words made Sugawara shiver in delight. "But not tonight," Daichi twisted Sugawara in his arms to look at him. "you just went through a lot emotionally so you probably need your sleep tonight" He added with a wink, which caused Sugawara's blush to come back. But Daichi was right, he hadn't been sleeping well, as much as he would love as well for him to be an irresponsible boyfriend he should get himself back together.
They finished putting away the equipment and locked up for the night. As they walked in direction of home, Sugawara bashfully grabbed Daichi's hand and Daichi tightened his grip once in Suga's hand. Everything was going to be alright.
*~*x o x o~*~
Next day before practice.
Being third years, Daichi, Sugawara and Asahi were always the first ones to practice. They normally get everything ready before the underclassmen and even their coach came in. Daichi was standing around starring at a clipboard. He was looking over some paper work before practice began. Normally his first job is to make sure to have an itinerary for practice set up. Asahi watched for a second as Sugawara approached Daichi from behind and subtlety slipped something in his pocket of his track jacket as he passed by to get the cart of volleyballs out. Daichi stiffened slightly at the intrusion of an item in his pocket and pulled it out. Asahi could see it was a red pack of pocky and see how Daichi smiled softly before pulling a stick out and munching on it as he finished with his clip board.
Which led to Asahi turning his gaze to his other friend. Sugawara was practically skipping as he set up both baskets of balls on each side of the court. Before turning his attention to filling water bottles.
"Not sure what you did" Asahi spoke to his captain as Daichi joined him and putting up the net.
Daichi looked at Asahi confused, "With?"
Asahi mouthed gapped open, "With Suga! That had to be you, right?" Asahi was referring to the fact their best friend's smile was back and real, firmly planted on his face. Maybe I was wrong and Daichi has nothing to do with it. He thought sadly as they finished putting the net in place.
Asahi quickly erased that thought from his mind as Daichi's face turned a bright shade of pink. So, he did do something! Asahi thought proudly.
"I was just honest with Koshi" Daichi muttered embarrassingly pulling out that pack of pocky again and shoving another stick into this mouth. Asahi not missing that Daichi used Sugawara's real name smile got even bigger.
"Well, always be honest with him. He is shining today!" Asahi congratulated Daichi excitedly.
"Why thank you Asahi!" Sugawara said brightly appearing before both of them with a huge grin on his face. Asahi straighten mentally cursing himself for not thinking of how Sugawara could over hear them talking about him. Suga's smile didn't falter at his timid friend.
"But now if we are talking honest however…" Sugawara started putting this fist lightly to his chin thoughtfully, "Can we talk about you being honest about Noya?" He asked innocently with a devilish grin.
The pocky between Daichi's lips straighten as he grinned over at Asahi, who's mouth dropped open and face turned every shade of red in the book. Sugawara chuckled at Asahi's face knowing his friend had no idea how obvious he was to his best friends.
Suga then set his eye on his next victim. He ducked under the net and leaned into Daichi's personal space and stealing the end of the pocky that Daichi was currently enjoying by biting the end off, super close to his lips. Daichi's heart quicken at the intimate contact. Sugawara munched lightly on the stick leaning back into his normal position. He looked at his friend and his boyfriend with a pleased grin before leaving them. He didn't get more than five steps before shouting, "The underclassmen are on their way! I think I hear Kageyama and Hinata yelling at each other," over his shoulder.
Asahi and Daichi look at each other, both faces bright red.
"He's definitely back" Asahi muttered out
"Oh yeah." Daichi said happily before clapping a hand on Asahi's shoulder. "And he won't let the Noya thing slide"
If possible, Asahi's blush got darker red. "What are you two even talking about?"
"Oh, I don't know Asahi. After all we are just outsiders looking in so we can see things a little more objectively." Daichi quoted with a chuckle before leaving a stunned Asahi to go join Sugawara with greeting the underclassmen as they entered.
Asahi stared in shock as his words were used against him. But couldn't help but smile as he watched as Sugawara smiled up at Daichi as he stood by his side. Or when Daichi took a chance and quickly kissed Suga's cheek right before Hinata burst through doors, Kageyama at his side. He could tell his captains were stronger just by looking at them. Good, that's what we all need.
"Asahi! How was your day? Ready for practice?" Came the voice that haunted his dreams. Maybe they were right, maybe it was his turn to be honest.
A/N: There it is, my first Haikyu fanfiction and first one in while! I've been really craving this pairing as I reread through the manga again! I have two more plots I have in mind but I've also been throwing around ideas for South Park fanfiction because Creek has been life as well lately! XD And I also have HunterxHunter on brain... so many fanfiction ideas so little! Hopefully I'll get started on those other thought spinning in my head!
Leave me a comment! Did you like it? Needs work?
Hope you enjoyed!
