Chapter 1
A new path

Gohan sighed as he watched the clock, as much as he loved studying 5 and a half years of it almost made him miss fighting, he'd been in his room for 2 hours now but things were looking up. Soon he was going to see the briefs, one of the few times his mother let him interact with the outside world. Although all this time alone did give him time to think about his future, his mom wanted him to become a doctor or a scholar, both of which Gohan liked the idea of but deep down he felt like he could do more.
"Hey big bro you ready to go?" Gohan jumped he had been so lost in thought that he hadn't noticed his little brother walk in "woh you spooked me there little man, when did you get so sneaky". "Well i have to be if i want to go explore without mom noticing" Goten giggled as he answered "yea you got that right, i'm almost ready i'll be down in a minute". "Ok i'll go tell mom" Goten replied as he ran out the room, Gohan still felt sad when he looked at goten. He looked exactly like his father but he never got to meet him.
He knew Goten didn't blame him but he still felt like it was his fault that he never got to meet dad, his rage as an ascended super saiyan was immense and all he wanted was to hurt cell which gave him his opening. It was his biggest mistake and it will haunt him for a long time because of it he didn't do any training since then not wanting to go super saiyan ever again.
Gohan got up from his desk and made his way over to his cupboard to get his jacket, he slipped it on and made his way to where his mother and brother were waiting. "Alright the copter bulma sent will be here soon so make sure you have everything" the son matriarch said to her sons. "Were ready" they both replied simultaneously as the sound of the copter died down. A loud knock at the door let them know their lift had arrived. "Okay let's not keep them waiting" chi chi said as she ushered her sons out the door, goten running excitedly over and gohan chasing after him, she smiled wondering if goku was watching.
The ride to Bulmas was nice. The clear skies ment it was a smooth ride, perfect time to just relax and watch the world go by, as they passed over cities they could make out heroes battling villains. Goten loved this and wanted nothing more than to be a hero like his father and his idol all might, Gohan liked to watch them as well it reminded him that the world had people fighting to defend it. He knew both krillin and tien had become heroes after cell was defeated and were very popular with tien even getting into the top ten, krillin often tried to encourage him to try but whilst he had the power he didn't think he was mentaly capable of being a hero. He wasn't his dad nor was he all might the two heroes his brother idolised, sometimes he wondered where he got all his enthusiasm from.
It wasn't long before they had arrived at capsule corp HQ the company had been expanding rapidly in the last few years, it took the lead in rebuilding the devastation caused by cell and had begun selling support equipment to heroes. With all this new business capsule corp was now without a doubt the biggest company on earth, making bulma the richest woman alive.
Once they had landed Goten rushed out to meet his friend who was waiting next to the platform "hey trunks". "Hey goten, common i just got the new smash bros let go play" trunks replied excitedly. "You too have fun" Bulma said as she watched the boys run off, she then turned to Gohan and chi chi "it's nice to see you both again, we just got done rebuilding the living area". "Oh what happened?" chi chi asked already anticipating the answer "well trunks challenged the 'prince of all saiyans' to a game which he lost and in a fit of rage destroyed the room" bulma sighed but it wasn't like she couldn't afford it.
"So Gohan decided which colleges you're gonna apply for yet? You havent got long before you need to start applying" Bulma asked casually making gohan a little nervous "well i hadn't really thought about". "Oh I thought you would want to go to UA or somewhere else to be a hero. In fact capsule corp just signed a deal with UA" Bulma added, although gohan had thought about UA when goten brought it up he didn't really want to be a hero so passed over it. "No, I don't think I want to be a hero" Gohan replied though his hesitation spoke volumes.
"Well if anyone deserves a break from the fighting it's you, the capsule corp science academy just opened last year im sure i could get you in" bulma said with a wink. Gohan blushed "um thanks a lot Bulma, i'll think about it it's just i'm not really sure what i want to do right now". "That would be a good choice, I can just imagine it now, my son the great scientist thanking me as he accepts his nobel prize" chi chi says as she daydreams to herself. Chi chi and bulma then began catching up as they walked through the complex, gohan didn't pay much attention to what they were talking about as he was too distracted by all the different experiments going on. "Maybe being a scientist wouldn't be too bad" he thought to himself as they reached their destination.
The room was huge, almost as big as their house, Gohan almost couldn't believe how big it was before remembering just how rich Bulma was "wow this is amazing" chi chi gasped. It was a large open plan space with a large kitchen room/dining room area, a setting area large enough for at least 50 people and a cinema screen tv. Not only that but the way the room just flowed from one side to the other spoke to the genius of the designer, suffice it to say this must have cost a small fortune.
"I see you like it, like i was saying we just had it finished last week so i'm still getting used to the new space hopefully it will last longer than the last one" bulma said with a slight sarcastic tone, both Gohan and chi chi new what she was talking about. "Not that he comes in here that often anyway, he spends most of his time training these days" she sighed but she knew that's just how saiyans were. "Oh how rude of me would either of you like tea?" "yes please" they both replied, bulma then pressed a button and out of the wall came a robot carrying fresh tea "wow now thats pretty cool" gohan said as he accepted the tea. "Yea i've got robots like that all over the room, there a prototype but should be on the market in a few months if tests go well, installing them was why the room took so long to finish" she replied as they sat down.
Chi chi and Bulma continued their conversation from earlier whilst Gohan sat quietly sipping his tea "as a scientist i could help people without having to fight, i could support heroes and make the world a better place" he thought to himself. The idea became more tempting the more he thought about it but something about the idea felt wrong to him we weren't quite sure and he would have to figure out what it was if he wanted to do this.
"Hey Gohan why do you go check on Goten and Trunks, i'm sure Trunks will be happy to see you" bulma said to Gohan interrupting his train of thought "sure, just which way is trunks room" Gohan answer worried about what the reply would be super complicated. "Don't worry, it's easy just take a left once you leave this room and ist the 5th door on the right" she replied trying to calm him. "Ok thanks bulma i'll see you soon" Gohan said as he put down his cup and left the room.
Once he arrived at Trunks room he knocked on the door but nobody answered, just before he could try again the door shot open and both boys were there to greet him "sorry we made you wait i just wanted to beat goten again" trunks said taunting goten. "Hey i've beaten you twice" goten shoot back "yea but i've beaten you 3 times so i'm number one" Trunks said sticking out his tongue at the end. "That's gonna be me in the future Trunks the number one hero!" trunks stated confidently "well you've definitely got the dive to do it" Gohan replied remembering the Trunks from the future timeline.
"You bet I'm gonna be the best, I've been training with dad so I can be as strong as him some day" Trunks proudly announced "wow sooo cool" Goten responded with Gohan seeing just how much Goten looked up to Trunks. "We were just going down to the gravity room now if you want to join us?" Trunks asked hoping that Gohan would say yes "okay sounds like fun" Gohan responded much to trunks delight. "Okay let's go" trunks blurted out before taking off down the hall with Goten and Gohan tailing him, Gohan could tell Trunks had been training with Vegeta he was nowhere near as fast at that age.
Once they reached the room they could tell it was active because of a low hum it was giving off, trunks activated the intercom "yo dad can we come in?" he asked the prince only responding with "we?" Trunks was quick to reply "Gohan and Goten are here, I wanted to show them the new training room". Vegeta didn't respond but after a short while the hum disappeared and the doors to the room opened.
The room itself was bare except for the gravity controls in the center of the room, although Gohan was sure there were some of these robots hidden about, Vegeta stood by the controls in his usual saiyan armor, his gaze focused on Gohan slightly unnerving him. "Common Goten come and look at this" Trunks exclaimed as the two boy made their way to the other side of the room leaving Gohan with Vegeta. The two of them stared at each other for a moment which for Gohan felt like an eternity, he was sure Vegeta was sizing him up and not liking what he was sensing.
Finally Vegeta spoke "I can tell you haven't Kept up with your training" he stated coldly "no matter, Trunks you and Goten need to leave know myself and Gohan are going to spar". The statement threw Gohan off but admittedly he probably should have expected this "lets go Goten we can watch outside" Trunks said as he and Goten quickly exited the room leaving Gohan and Vegeta alone.
Gohan looked to the exit "look Vegeta i don't want to fight anymore" he protested but as he turned back to Vegeta he felt his fist slam into the side of his face sending him skidding back a few feet "too bad because it wasn't a request, if you want to leave this room you'll have to fight" Vegeta replied taking up a combat stance.
"Fine then," Gohan thought as he charged Vegeta, who swung his leg low to try and knock Gohan off balance, In response Gohan jumped high only to realize he'd walked into Vegeta's trap with him unleashing a large ki blast sending Gogan flying back into the wall. Without saying a word Vegeta went on the offensive giving Gohan no time to recover. Gohan barely had enough time to catch the first punch and had no time to react to the second as it slammed into his gut bringing him to his knees.
Gohan sputtered and coughed "dam Vegeta's a lot stronger than I remember" Vegeta looked down at with contempt "is that the best you can do?". "No" Gohan thought definitely as he grabbed Vegeta's legs and began to spin launching him across the room creating some much needed distance, However Vegeta was back on his feet in no time, his face still giving a look of disapproval as he charged towards Gohan. This time though Gohan was ready, as Vegeta threw his fist at Gohan's head he ducked under it and went for a powerful gut punch of his own but to his surprise it didn't seem to faze Vegeta at all.
Gohan looked up at Vegeta with a look of shock on his face, finally understanding the power difference between them, he didn't have much time to ponder this as Vegeta slammed his knee into Gohan's chin stunning him. He then followed up with a combo of punches and kicks giving Gohan no time to respond or dodge, finishing the combo with a "BIG BANG ATTACK!" once again sending Gohan crashing into the wall this time for good.
As Gohan slowly collapsed onto the ground all he felt was pain "here" he heard looking up to see Vegeta's stretched hand. After a moment of hesitation he grabbed it Vegeta pulling slowly to his feet and asking him "tell me something why did you stop training really, and before you say your mother wouldn't let you we both know that never stopped Kakarot". The mention of his father let him know he was serious, after a brief moment he answered "I stopped because i didn't like who i became when i fought cell all i wanted was to hurt him it was all i could think about, i couldn't see anything else and that terrified me".
Vegeta waited before he responded "look i understand, back then i was the same all I wanted was to surpass your father and prove i was the strongest and it lead me to make some stupid desicions. But you can't let your past mistakes hold you back, if you let that fear control you. Look i know we've had our differences but your father did what he did because he knew you would be here to protect earth. What would he think if he saw you now broken and hopeless".
This mabe Gohan think what would his father think of him now, would he still be proud of him or would he be disappointed at him for wasting his potential. Vegeta spoke up again "look i really don't care what you do but fighting is in your blood, if not for yourself then be like your father and his friends and fight for others" those words sounded strange coming Vegeta a testament to how much he had changed "you can use the room next to this to clean yourself up, just don't spend your life obsessing over the past" was the last thing Vegeta said to him as he walked out of the room.
Gohan was stuck in place Vegeta had given him a lot to think about but he had cleared one thing for him, the only thing holding him back was his saiyan blood. He wouldn't be content with sitting on the sidelines, he wouldn't be able to forgive himself if someone got hurt because he let himself be controlled by fear, no he had decided it wasn't about the people he failed this was about the people he was going to fail by sitting around and doing nothing. he was going to be a hero
Once Gohan had cleaned himself off he made his way back down to the living area, once he walked he could hear Goten and Trunks talking about the fight but before he could go over to them Chi chi intercepted him. "Gohan i thought you were done with fighting" she asked "leave him alone Chi chi you know what Vegeta's like he probably gave him no choice" Bulma interjected to try and save Gohan "mom i've decided i want to become a hero" he said with Chi chi to shocked to respond. "Wow that's so cool Gohan" Goten ran over to say, Chi chi still looked shocked "are you sure about this" she asked him "yes mom more sure than i've been my whole life" he answered quickly "well i don't know what i expected you are your father's son after all" Gohan smiled as he heard his mother say those words, he half expected a long speech about how irresponsible it was "thank you mom"
"So Gohan got any idea which hero school you want to go to?" Bulma asked already knowing the answer "yea im going for UA" he replied just as she expected. "You're going to the school all might went to that's so awesome right Trunks" with Trunks adding "I'm sure gohan cloud get in easily". Gohan smiled as he looked at Goten so excited "I'll make you proud dad" he thought to himself "I will be the great hero you wanted me to be!".
