Chapter 23 Ambiguous

Roy stared at the TV screen with a gloomy expression. He was watching his favorite show of all time, Double Intrigue. Sasha, the leading lady, was stuck in a heated situation. She was just minutes away from certain death. While that wasn't unusual in a show like Double Intrigue, this time around it was really serious.

Serious. Roy aimed his eyes down toward the floor and leaned against his right hand. Wasn't TV supposed to take people out of the real world? This time around, it was just bumming Roy out. He looked around, trying to find the remote. Unfortunately, it was all the way over on the other side of the couch. Roy reached out lazily, but without actually getting up, there was no way he could get to the remote. He slumped deeper into the couch just as his siblings came in.

"Hey, Big Guy," said Wendy. She went over and gave him a hug. Roy hugged her back, but he did it with so little enthusiasm you would think he was a corpse. "How are you holding up?"

"Alright, I guess," he said quietly. Ludwig snickered.

"'Alright, you guess?' It's a good thing you're wearing sunglasses, otherwise we might see your eyes turn brown."

Roy cast Ludwig a glare and let out a sigh. Morton stepped forward and placed his hand on Roy's right arm. His expression was wrought with sympathy.

"It's okay, Roy. We know you're sad; you don't have to hide it from us. You can just let it out."

Roy carefully brushed away Morton's hand. He sniffled as he removed his sunglasses.

"Showing it isn't going to do any good either," he said. "Celia is still going to die."

Lemmy shed a tear and wiped it away slowly.

"I don't even understand why she would want to do this in the first place."

Roy felt his hand curl into a fist. A sour taste filled his mouth, which he swallowed quickly. He knew why she wanted to do it. And the worst part was that he was starting to agree with her thinking.

"She did it because Bowser killed Aqua's parents."

A silence befell the room. It was strong and so thick that one would be able to hear a pin drop.

"I'm sorry, Bowser did what?" Larry asked. Roy looked up with anger pouring from his face.

"Bowser killed Aqua's parents! He said that he did it because the Mushroom King and Queen were planning an invasion!" He wiped a stray tear from his eyes. "He wanted to make sure that the Kingdom was safe, but he ended up making things one hundred percent worser."

Iggy cringed at Roy's terrible grammar. The others stared at him with wide eyes.

"Are you...are you serious?" Wendy asked. When Roy nodded his head, her face filled with disbelief. "No, he didn't! He couldn't!"

"That's exactly what I thought!" Roy said. "But he said that he did it!" He shook his head. "Why would he do such a thing! If it weren't for him, then this whole mess wouldn't be an issue!"

"You're absolutely right," said Ludwig. Roy looked up at him in surprise as he took a step forward. "Bowser doesn't have the right to take two lives like that! All life is precious."

"I don't know," Lemmy said. "I mean, Roy did say that the Mushroom King and Queen were planning an invasion. More people would have died than just two."

Roy scoffed.

"Well then, why didn't he tell everyone to evacuate, or something?"

"I don't believe that is a practical solution," said Morton. "Not everyone would be willing to leave. And even if they were, there would be no way to get them all out of the Kingdom safely."

"Even still," said Ludwig. "That doesn't mean that Bowser just straight up murders them!"

"Why not?" asked Larry. "They were planning on doing the same thing, except ten times worse!"

"So what?" asked Wendy. "Bowser is supposed to be a good and fair king! Even when it comes to foreign relations, you aren't supposed to just get up and assassinate the royals!"

"But the invasion they were planning," said Morton. "It would have resulted in a war!"

"Assassinating the royals also would have resulted in war!" Wendy objected.

"Not necessarily," Larry said. "The royals are the leaders of the military."

"But that's neglecting to consider chain of command!" Ludwig said.

"But the chain of command would have resulted in the heir taking control," said Morton. "And consider that the pacifist, teenage Princess Peach was the heir, well…"

Roy shook his head and stood up.

"Even still, a lot of bad things have come out of this."

"Well, of course we know that, with the power of hindsight," Morton said. "But Bowser didn't have that luxury when he made the decision."

The Koopalings stood in silence for a little bit. Wendy shook her head.

"I just can't believe," she said, "that Bowser is always preaching fairness and justice and lawfulness, yet he did this. It's just...GAH!"

"It's hypocritical is what it is!" Ludwig said.

"Not really," Lemmy objected. "He could have learned from his experience. Besides, like Roy said, he did it to prevent the deaths of billions of people." Lemmy snickered. "I mean, what should he have done? Let the King and Queen kill us?"

"He could have found another solution!" Roy stated. Morton crossed his arms at him.

"And what solution would that have been?"

Roy hesitated. He looked at his siblings faces, but he saw that none of them would be of any help. They looked just as taken aback by that question as he was. Roy sighed and took a seat back on the couch and looked at the TV again. Sasha was now battling an army of baddies.

"Look," Iggy said as he stepped forward. "I think that this is a moot point. We could literally go back and forth for hours arguing about this."

Roy nodded and wiped a tear from his eyes.

"You're right. You're absolutely right."

Suddenly, the door opened, and in stepped Tailspin.

"Excuse me, your highnesses," he said. "It's time for the trial."

Roy nodded sullenly as he got up. He followed his siblings out toward the throne room, not even bothering to turn off the Television.
