The Start of Something New

Sylvie Brett was sitting in her kitchen drinking tea, thinking about the crush, about Casey running towards her when she pulled herself from the ambo. Her feelings for him were strong but she was afraid to act on them and frankly she was afraid he didn't felt the same way. They had their moments, the longing stares, and the endless support of each other but there was something different in the day of the crush. Hearing Gallo tell the story of how Casey ran without his gear to save her, felt like everything fell into place, he cared about her, he wanted her to be safe and she was sure he felt the same way but couldn't handle it and she avoided him all the next shift. She tried to make it natural but she was worried that Matt felt it.

She was deep in her thoughts when she heard a knock on the door.

"Matt, hi, what are you doing here?" Sylvie asked surprised when she saw him standing on her doorstep.

"You ran off from Molly's and avoid me all shift, talk to me Sylvie, did I do something wrong?" He asked.

"No, you did nothing wrong. I was... avoiding you". She said.

Sylvie lets matt enter the apartment. They sat on the sofa and he waited to hear her reason.

"I was avoiding you because I was afraid…". Sylvie said and took a big breath.

"Afraid of what?" Matt asked with his eyes locking into hers.

"I was afraid to admit I have... feelings for you". She said and felt like a giant weight lifted from her chest.

Matt smiles with a big smile and she continued…

"I had this feeling for some time now. When you helped me with the Ambo crashing and I heard the story from Gallo, I felt my heart was exploding and I couldn't handle it..."

He got closer to her and kissed her softly and he said, "I feel the same way, Sylvie. We grew closer for some time now and I can't stop thinking about you".

Sylvie started tearing up and Matt asked "Why are you crying?" while caressing her face to wipe the tear from her cheek.

"We can't be together". She said.

"Why not?" he asked.

"Because of Gabby", she whispered, "I feel guilty for my feelings for you. I'm afraid that if we start something and Gabby would come back, you would return to her and my heart would shatter to a million pieces". Sylvie continued to cry and Matt held her.

"Gabby and I are over. We got divorced. We did love each other and I thought it would last forever... but Gabby left me even before she left the country, she wanted to do things on her own terms like we weren't a couple. I wanted a partner to build a relationship and a family and she wanted to do that on her own terms without me knowing she was risking herself and our relationship in the process. I would always remember her and our time together, she was a part of my life but I know it's over and there is no going back to what we used to be".

Sylvie hugged him and he continued, "My feelings for you are something I didn't expect. I couldn't help but falling in love with you. You are kind, smart, beautiful". Sylvie looked at him with sparkling eyes and he continued, "You are strong and an amazing woman, I have a feeling we can build something real and strong together, Sylvie".

Sylvie liked what she heard, she thought he was still in love with Gabby, and to know that the chapter is closed behind him reassured her.

He leaned to kiss her again and they kiss softly at first and it grew passionately, it was like the world stopped, they found serenity in each other arms.

"Matt, I want to take this slow; you are the one I want to get it right with". She said.

"I'll wait as long as it takes". Said Matt and kissed her forehead.

They hugged all night and fell asleep on the sofa. They knew they had a long way ahead of them but they felt it was the start of the rest of their life together...
