Chapter 2: Exposed
Morning came in faster than Bia expected as what little shining light of the system's star through the cloudy polluted atmosphere of the world shot through the open window of her tiny space into her eyes. She couldn't fight that it was time to get going if she was to keep her meager paying job at the scrapper yard.
"Just one day, I would like to sleep in…" Bia complained as she knew that would never happen.
Putting on her rough jacket, she made sure to grab the silver metal tube, conceding it in her jacket before leaving and going out of the building. As she stepped outside, she was met by a familiar and friendly face.
"Hey Bia." A rather chubby looking young female blue macaw around Bia's age greeted her. "Ready for another low paying day?"
"Not really Carla…" Bia answered. "Lets just get this over with." Bia said as the two friends walked the streets to the tram station for the scrap yard, as always passing by stormtrooper patrols and other civilians being questioned and asked for identification.
The two reached the tram station, where of course they needed to present their IDs to an Imperial officer before getting on, a few stormtroopers standing next to him of course. Carla was first as the officer scanned the ID with a device as Carla was clear, the officer nodding his head, Bia next. This was the part Bia really hated… Getting her ID checked by this Imperial scum as Bia handed it over, the officer checking it as Bia was clear to move on. She took back her ID without saying anything back, there was only one rule to survive, don't stick out and cause trouble and Bia has been surviving like that for years now.
As the tram had all its passengers, it moved on gliding along the hover rails towards the scrapper yard. As Bia and Carla sat together, Carla started up a conversation.
"So…" Carla began. "What do you think we'll find today?"
"Same as usual Carla…" Bia replied. "I'll be surprised if we find anything different." Bia said as the scrapper yard soon enough came into view, Bia sighing as the tram neared its destination.
The scrapper yard was a place old, decommissioned ships and other vehicles were broken apart so the materials could be used for new ships and well the ships being broken down were old Jedi cruisers from the last war, in which Bia was in. The tram stopped at the station, letting off the workers as they once again had their IDs checked before being allowed to go in and continue their work. Bia and Carla parted ways as their boss gave them their jobs for the day, Bia heading for her work area as she took a welder's mask and blowtorch. Bia spending the time cutting away at various metal surfaces, it was tedious, but it gave Bia the credits she needed.
A couple hours passed as Carla came to see her friend, a smile on her face as she tapped Bia's back, Bia taking off her mask and turning off her blowtorch and turning around to see her friend.
"Bia, boss wants to see us, apparently he has a big job for us, could give us some extra credits if we do a good job." Carla gave the good news.
"Alright, but I have a feeling it's not going to be easy…" Bia agreed as the two went to see their boss about the job.
"We have a new arrival today, another of those old cruisers, but the markings on it are very different from the ones we already have, could contain some very valuable and untouched objects inside." The boss explained. "Only problem is that the ship seems to have suffered much more damage to its hull, could break up by itself if it wanted to and the way to it is a bit more dangerous, so if you two can get anything, I'll give you two a 20 percent raise to your normal pay." The boss revealing what Bia feared.
"What do you say Bia?" Carla laid her wing down on Bia's shoulder. "That's a big increase in pay and a new kind of work." Carla convinced Bia as that was the one thing she hated about her friend, she could get her into anything.
"I guess that sounds like a good deal, I'm in." Bia said as the two friends began their trek to the new arrival.
Like always on a normal day, it involved climbing up and holding onto panels sticking out, jumping from platform to platform, and swinging over a longer empty space from a rope, which had the possibility of snapping free and sending the bird down to his or her death.
"The things I do…" Bia said quietly as she was currently gripping onto cracks in a metal wall of panels and as she grabbed onto one, pushing down hard, it suddenly came loose as Bia almost slipped off, but managing to hang on with one wing still as she brought back the other to steady herself, letting out a deep breath as that was close.
"You okay Bia?" Carla asked as Carla made it, back on a solid surface.
"Yeah… That was close…" Bia replied as she relaxed and reached her friend, Carla holding out a wing for Bia to take as Bia took it, Carla helping her friend up. "Looks like we're close." Bia noticed as up ahead was the new arrival, just sitting there waiting to be cracked open and explored.
"Well, lets not just stand here, we got a job to do." Carla urged her friend as the two made it the rest of the way, coming to the hull of the ship, which towered over them. "Wow, would you just look at it…"
"Yeah…" Bia added as she walked closer, trying to figure out a way inside.
Bia could have easily used the Force or better yet… Took out her concealed weapon to cut her way in… If she was alone that is. Carla had no idea of who Bia really was as the two searched for a way in and luckily soon enough Carls found a way.
"Look Bia." Carla said as there was a clear breach in the hull, big enough for the two to get in as there was scorch marks around the hole. "What do you think caused this?"
"It was probably attacked when it was in service, must have also sucked out anyone in the compartment."
"Terrible way to go out." Carla added as she took the first step in.
It was of course completely dark inside, obstacles everywhere as Bia and Carla took out their lights, clearing away their path as they looked for anything they could bring back to show for their effort. Again, Bia could have easily took out her hidden weapon to light the way or use the Force to move away things, but she didn't as being in here, in this darkness and silence brought back painful memories for Bia. Bia swore she could almost hear the voices of those who were once on board this ship, haunting her as Bia fought to keep her feelings under control as the two continued through the corridors of the ship.
Soon enough the two came to the front half of the ship, which was basically a huge hangar, built to house multiple fighters and other kinds of smaller vehicles. And luckily for the two friends, there was a lot of those old crafts in here.
"It's our lucky day Bia, more stuff in here than we can carry." Carla said happily as she shined the light through the large empty space, there were a few holes above in the hull providing spots of light, but it was still mostly dark. "Why don't we separate, it'll give us a better chance to look for things."
"You sure?" Bia a bit afraid.
"Don't worry, we'll be fine." Carla reassured her friend as she went off as Bia was left alone.
"Okay Bia, no one other than you and Carla are here…" Bia reminded herself as she started looking throughout the hangar space.
However as Bia walked through the space, the voices came back, to the point where they almost sounded like echoes and they were coming from all around Bia. Bia frantically pointed out her light in the direction of the loudest voices, but no one appeared, only voices as Bia spun around. Soon enough Bia was on the verge of a panic attack as she tripped over something, falling down and landing on her back against a wing of a ship it seemed. Calming down and picking herself back up, she shined her light upon what she fell on and well the light revealed an old symbol, the symbol of the same kind of silver tube Bia had, lighting against a backdrop of stars. Bia shone her light over the rest of what she fell on and her beak was wide open as it was an old Jedi starfighter, mostly intact too.
"I wonder who this belonged to…" Bia said as she ran her wing over the starfighter.
Bia looked up and saw the light from Carla nearby, her friend still okay, but it was good Bia looked up in time, because Bia then heard something break off and well the next thing she saw was Carla's light fall down and Carla yell out. Bia stopped what she was doing and ran on over, her light showing Carla was trapped under a steel beam.
"Carla!" Bia shouted as she was bent down to her friend. "You okay?"
"I'm fine, just pinned…" Carla replied as she groaned from the pain.
"You're lucky that didn't hit you hard enough, lets get this off you." Bia said as she tried to lift the beam, but it was far too heavy for her and Carla couldn't get free. "Alright, calm down Carla, I'm going to get you out of here."
"How?" Carla said. "I doubt there's anything in here that can help, you should go, get help and come back."
"No way, I'm not leaving you here." Bia returned. "I'll think of something."
Bia looked around and of course since they came in here, there was no one else as Bia let out a breath and turned back to Carla. She had to do it, there was no other choice…
"Okay Carla, I'm going to do something that will surprise you, you have to promise me you wouldn't be afraid." Bia told her friend.
"As long as it gets me out of here, I'm okay with it." Carla replied.
Bia took a deep breath and closing her eyes, she focused on the metal beam pinning Carla down, picturing it in her mind before she stretched out a wing and effortlessly picked up the beam off Carla, putting it aside as Carla was stunned beyond belief. In fact she didn't even move a muscle the entire time as she was now free and Bia helped her friend up.
And no one organic might have been watching, but if Bia was more careful, she would have seen the Imperial probe droid which came through one of the holes in the hull, catching her in the act of freeing her friend…
And I'll leave it at this cliffhanger!
I hope you enjoyed this chapter and looking froward to what happens next! (Spoiler… It's not going to be good…)
With that…
See everybird later!
