AN: I plan on posting at least one chapter each week (but it could be more often) so keep an eye out. I tried to have a little more humor in this chapter but there is still good fluff. Don't worry, lemony goodness will be coming soon! Remember to review, favorite, and all that jazz.
At the store, Edgeworth and Trucy picked out some vegetables for a salad, gold potatoes, pork chops, and fruit for dessert. Edgeworth got plenty of extra food. He wanted to make sure the Wrights would have leftovers for at least one more dinner. He made a mental note to lecture Phoenix about feeding Trucy nutritious meals.
Finally, they made their way to the dreaded feminine care aisle. As soon as they stepped into the row, Edgeworth was overwhelmed by the variety in products. Trucy was wide-eyed so he suspected that she must feel similarly baffled.
Filling these shelves were panty liners, pads, maxi pads, pads with wings, maxi pads with wings, overnight pads, pads made from cotton, pads made from foam, tampons, tampons with cardboard applicators, tampons with plastic applicators, tampons with braided string, tampons made with 100% cotton, all of which came in scented and unscented variations, in ten to fifteen different brands. He definitely felt his eye twitching, and why was there so much pink? Then he noticed sizes. Some sizes were listed as numbers while others had names like regular, light, super, super plus, and ultra.
This was a nightmare. He didn't even know where to start. How were women supposed to find what they needed with so many options. He picked up a random package and looked at the description on the back. There was information about size based on flow and a statement that was clearly only for marketing. He was truly at a loss.
Then it occurred to him, Franziska was in town working on a case. Maybe he could call her. She would probably chastise him, but he remembered that she had a soft spot for children, especially girls, and this situation definitely needed a woman's perspective.
"Quite frankly, Trucy, I have no idea what to suggest. Would you mind if I called my sister to ask for her opinion?"
She nodded, and with the affirmation he called Franziska.
"Hello, Little Brother."
"Hello, Franziska."
"What do you need? You know I am working on a case and don't like to be interrupted." Others would think she was being rude, but Edgeworth knew that she cared more than she let on. If it had really been an issue then she wouldn't have answered.
"I am with Wright's daughter, Trucy. She started her period for the first time, and we need your advice on what feminine care product to get for her."
"I see," she paused then added with pseudo-agitation, "and where is Phoenix Wright? Why is he not with his daughter in her time of need?"
"He asked me to stay with her for the evening while he had urgent business in Kurain Village."
She softened. "I do hope you informed her of what was going on with her body."
"Of course I did."
"Give the phone to the girl."
Edgeworth handed the phone to Trucy and listened to the one side of the conversation.
"Hello?" - "Yes." - "I'm 12." - "I don't know." - "Not a lot." - "I guess I'm kinda small compared to my friends." - "Okay." She walked to a spot down the aisle. "I see it."
She listed some of the options near her then grabbed a box and made her way back to him to place the box in the cart.
"Thank you, Miss Franziska, here's Uncle Edgeworth." She handed the phone back to him.
"Franziska," he answered.
"It's adorable that she calls you 'Uncle'." She was teasing slightly but turned more serious. "Be good to her. This can be a very emotional time."
"I will. Thank you for your help." Saying thank you was just one of the many ways Wright had helped him become a better person and it was a little easier every time he needed to say it.
"Goodbye, Miles Edgeworth." She still had that funny habit of using people's full names.
"Goodbye, Franziska."
After taking care of her personal matters, Trucy asked to help make dinner. Edgeworth requested that she wash the fruit and vegetables, and then taught her how to chop up the ingredients on the cutting board.
Edgeworth seasoned the potatoes and pork chops and prepared them for the oven. Using a large bowl, he and Trucy assembled a beautiful salad. Edgeworth found a jar in one of the cabinets and showed Trucy how to make a simple vinaigrette. As an adult, Edgeworth found he liked to cook because he liked exploring flavors and cooking techniques. Trucy seemed to enjoy herself in the food preparation as well. The fruit and the salad were placed in the fridge until the other food was ready. They had a little while before it would be finished.
"Uncle Edgeworth, I want to show you something. I'll go get it." She ran off toward her room and he sat on the couch waiting for her. She seemed excited, he wondered what to expect.
She walked in with a binder style book and sat next to him. He realized that it was actually a photo album. Trucy opened the front cover, and Edgeworth noticed that the photos were from the old style disposable cameras that frequently got developed at drug stores. The first picture was of Phoenix cheek-to-cheek with Trucy. Trucy was laughing, eyes shut, while Phoenix had the biggest smile Edgeworth had ever seen on his friend.
"This is my favorite picture of Daddy and me." She beamed.
" I can see why." It was all Edgeworth could say when he realized he had been staring at Wright's face just a little too long.
Trucy began flipping through the pages explaining who she was with and what they were doing. There were pictures with Maya, Pearl, more with Phoenix, and there had even been a group picture that Edgeworth was in along with many others. He remembered it from several years ago.
Trucy started to turn the page and explained, "Now next are some of Daddy's treasured pictures and memories."
There were pictures of Phoenix with Maya, and some with Pearl. Then some slightly older ones with Phoenix and Mia. There was even a picture of Phoenix and Dahlia, well, actually it was probably Iris. There were some old movie ticket stubs and theater playbills. There were pictures from college and high school graduations. Then came the pictures of Phoenix's teen years. He was gangly but still had a wide smile and his signature hair spikes. Trucy turned the page again and Edgeworth's stomach lurched, his heart jumping into his throat.
"This is one of Daddy's favorite pictures." On one side was a picture of 9-year-olds Phoenix and Edgeworth sitting close on a low tree branch. They had their arms wrapped around each other's shoulders and the sides of their heads touched. They smiled brightly at the camera. Edgeworth remembered that day. Phoenix's mother had taken that picture.
Edgeworth felt an ache deep in his chest remembering his lost childhood. How different it would have been if his father hadn't died, and he had been able to stay and grow up with his childhood friend. He stared at the photo. That had been one of the happiest times in his life. He suddenly wished he could hug his friend, despite his cold-shell persona.
He turned his attention to the other side and saw a newspaper clipping with his own scowling face pictured with the title Demon Prosecutor. He ran his fingers across the page.
"That was part of why Daddy became a Defense Attorney. He wanted to help you. He knew his friend was still inside."
Edgeworth felt a slight stinging sensation in his eyes. How did he manage to find a loyal friend like Phoenix? He didn't deserve it. He pulled Trucy into a side hug, feeling raw inside.
"Thank you for showing me." His voice was strained. After a brief moment he released her. "I'll check on dinner."
Edgeworth found a food thermometer in a drawer near the oven, and he showed Trucy how it is used. Seeing it was done, he asked Trucy to set the table, and he put out the food. He helped serve Trucy first then himself. They fell into casual conversation. He let Trucy talk all about her magic acts and new tricks she was learning. She asked about his favorite books. They also discussed music, and he revealed that he could play the flute and piano. Once they finished eating, Trucy started to put up the food in plastic storage containers while Edgeworth began washing the dishes. When Trucy finished Edgeworth suggested she pick out a movie while he finished the dishes.
Once he was done, he sat on the couch while Trucy put on the movie she had picked out. It turned out to be one of the old samurai movies. While she was making her way back to the couch, he noticed that her hand was covering her lower abdomen.
"Are you feeling okay?" He asked, concerned.
"Yeah, it just kinda aches."
He nodded. "Yes, I have heard that that can be a problem. Is there anything I can do to help?"
"I think I'll be okay… but can I snuggle with you while we watch the movie?"
He was surprised at her request, but how could he deny her? He held out his arm in invitation. She plopped down next to him and cuddled into his side. Edgeworth was starting to realize how much he had missed simple familial touches, so warm and comforting.
About three quarters of the way through the movie, Trucy shifted, curling into a ball with her head resting on Edgeworth's thigh. He was once again surprised at her actions. She was so comfortable around him.
Part of him wished that his adoption experience was as full of love as hers. He got a great education and shared a slightly strange bond with his sister but it had none of the affection that he saw with Phoenix and Trucy, or even what he had experienced with his own father, although that hadn't been quite as touchy-feely as the Wrights. Edgeworth smiled at his thoughts. How lucky Trucy was. On a whim, he began stroking her hair. She snuggled into him in response. Taking that as encouragement, he continued as the movie played.
By the time the credits were rolling, Trucy had fallen asleep. Edgeworth didn't want to wake her so he merely grabbed the remote and shut off the tv. Then he turned on the lamp and picked up the book he had started earlier, still caressing Trucy's hair between page turns.
He had lost track of time when he heard a key in the door. Wright walked in and Edgeworth looked up at him. Wright smiled at them then leaned down and caressed his daughter's cheek. He scooped her into his arms and carried her to her bed.
Edgeworth took the opportunity to make some tea. He sighed. He still had to tell Wright everything from earlier.
