As the week went on, Miles got more questions about his relationship status. At this point he confirmed he was seeing someone but wouldn't answer any questions about details beyond that. Meeting with Phoenix on Tuesday had helped him get through the rest of the week, but Miles was thankful that it was finally Friday. He had worked hard during the week and even passed along some of his more minor cases to less experienced prosecutors.
He was looking forward to the weekend. He was going to take Phoenix out, and they could spend a lot of time together, just the two of them. He was still nervous about being intimate despite having done his research and buying some supplies. That part had actually been quite awkward for him, and he blushed remembering the event.
He had gone to a boutique style sex store which had overwhelmed him with lingerie, toys, and pornographic movies. He blushed profusely upon entering and had likely looked like a deer in headlights. He was the only man in the boutique, and all of the women stared as he walked past the small sections.
Eventually one of the women working there took pity on him and offered her help. It had probably only been a minute or so, but to him, it felt like forever. By most standards the woman would be considered quite pretty despite Miles's male preferences. She looked like she was in her late twenties, had green eyes with auburn hair, and displayed a tattoo of dueling dragons wrapping around her wrist.
She had been quite helpful, thoroughly discussing the different types of lubes and brands offering tips based on their qualities. He appreciated her fact-based non-judgemental approach, but it had still been extremely embarrassing to discuss such things with a stranger. In the end she had helped him pick out products that suited his needs.
He had thanked her shyly after checking out, and in response she wished him luck with his new boyfriend. He hadn't mentioned Phoenix or even that he was seeing a man, but he must have been really obvious. That or she was skilled at picking up on subtle hints from helping people often, he reasoned. Afterall, it wouldn't be odd if people tended to fall into predictable patterns. Regardless, he had been very thankful when he was finally able to leave the store and escape the fixed gazes from the women shopping.
Miles finished up the last of his paperwork for the weekend with time to spare. Still, he rushed home to get ready for his date. He wanted to still look nice but a little more casual since he told Phoenix that he wanted to take him to a less fancy but more intimate place. After trying on several items he decided on a black button up shirt and his rarely worn dark-wash, form fitting jeans. He had always cared about his appearance, but he couldn't remember the last time he had fussed over it so much.
When he was satisfied with his look he realized he was still early, but due to his excitement and, to a lesser extent, nerves, he left to pick up Phoenix. On his way, different theoretical scenarios played through his mind as he considered "what ifs" mixing with memories of their kisses and shared touches. He eventually had to force his thoughts in a different direction, so that he wouldn't get too riled up.
It was still pretty early when he arrived, so he texted Phoenix from the car.
I have just arrived. I apologize for being early.
He received a very quick response, for which his racing heart was very thankful.
No problem. You are welcome to come inside. I'll be ready in a few minutes.
Miles expeditiously made his way to Phoenix door. He knocked lightly before opening the door gingerly.
"Come in," Phoenix yelled from the other room. "I'll be out in a minute. Make yourself comfortable."
Miles walked in the rest of the way, shutting the door behind him. He took a seat on the couch and took a few deep breaths trying to quell his apprehension. A few moments later, Phoenix walked out to greet him. He was wearing a deep purple dress shirt, like the color of royalty. He was also wearing jeans, but his were black and clung nicely to his thighs. Miles found himself awestruck and standing at the sight of him. His heart was pounding furiously and his fingers ached to reach out and touch him.
"What?" Phoenix asked in response to the look Miles was giving him.
"You look... phenomenal," he stammered breathlessly.
Phoenix smiled and briefly looked down at himself before looking back at him. "Considering you could pass as a model, I will take that as very high praise."
Miles barely let him finish speaking before pulling him into a kiss that caused an explosion of energy somewhere near his stomach.
"I don't know about that model comment, but high praise was definitely intended."
Phoenix blushed slightly and chuckled. "You really have no idea how attractive you are, do you?"
Miles felt another rush of electricity while his own cheeks warmed, but he had no idea how to respond to the question. Ultimately, he just shrugged.
Sparing him, Phoenix asked, "So what's the plan for tonight?"
"First, I'm taking you to dinner."
"That's all you're going to tell me?"
Miles wasn't exactly sure where the night might take them and he was desperately trying to go with the flow despite his usual controlling demeanor. He wasn't going to tell Phoenix all of that, though, so Miles smirked at him and winked. He hoped it came across as charming as when Phoenix had done it. He didn't press but went to the door inviting Miles to exit first.
As Miles stepped across the threshold, Phoenix commented, "You should wear those jeans more often."
Miles turned back to look at him in surprise. He was smirking flirtatiously.
"Were you just…?"
"Checking you out? Yes and I wasn't disappointed," Phoenix admitted cheekily.
Miles felt his face turning red again at his brazen remark.
"And see, that just made it even better," Phoenix teased and kissed him on the cheek.
Miles tried to ignore the butterflies and bumped into Phoenix's shoulder playfully. "Are you trying to get me back for not telling you the plans for the evening?"
"I wasn't but if that's how it came across then that's just a convenient bonus."
He raised an eyebrow at his companion. He secretly loved all of the teasing even if it was embarrassing at times. He would find a way to get him back.
"Let's go to dinner."
Miles drove them into a historic downtown area of a local suburb. There were boutiques, wineries, specialty shops, and restaurants lined up on either side of the road. He parked the car in one of the several public lots.
Upon exiting the car, he grabbed Phoenix's hand and started to walk toward the restaurant a couple blocks up the street. As they walked, he looked over at Phoenix who had been taking in the charm of the town. Miles smiled at him. He didn't think he would ever get tired of seeing Phoenix's expressiveness.
"It's so cute," Phoenix observed.
"Indeed. I enjoy coming over here. I like to support the small businesses and there are some really high quality goods. It has a nice ambiance as well."
"It really does!" Phoenix agreed excitedly.
"You should see it around Christmas. All of the lights and decorations make it quite picturesque."
"I imagine." Phoenix smiled brightly. "So where are we going tonight?"
Miles pointed to a place on the corner ahead "There."
It was a little Italian place that had a sign where the name Napoli's was written in an elegant script, and there was an Italian market attached on one side. Upon entering, the restaurant was divided into two main areas. Miles had always suspected that they had expanded next door after the previous tenants left. It was quite busy; there was even a wait. Thankfully it wasn't long since it was early on a Friday night.
Once they were seated, Phoenix asked, "How did you even find this place?"
"While traveling I found that local places tended to have the most interesting and authentic foods. I began to seek that out."
"That's awesome. I look forward to you showing me other places in the future."
Phoenix had a way of making him feel like he was the only person in existence. He smiled fondly at him.
After they ordered, he noticed that Phoenix's body language had changed. He wasn't very good at reading people, but it seemed to be some kind of discomfort.
"Is something bothering you?" he asked, worried he had done something to upset him.
"Miles, I don't want you to feel like you always have to pay when we go out."
Was that what was causing Phoenix's discomfort? He would do anything to have him smile again. He grabbed his hand.
"It's really not a problem."
"Are you sure?" Phoenix asked shyly.
"Quite sure. Also, you brought me lunch just the other day."
"That's not really the same."
"I agree." Miles began.
A slightly hurt expression crossed Phoenix's face.
Miles added on quickly, "...but I'm certain I am thinking of something very different than you are."
Phoenix looked at him quizzically, seeming uncertain.
"It's not about the cost of the items. It's the gesture. It's the fact that you were there for me when I needed support. That meant more to me than I know how to express."
Pink dusted Phoenix's cheeks. "I wanted to be there for you," he mumbled.
"And I want to do this for you. I don't want you to worry about me paying for dates. I live quite comfortably. Let me be a doting partner."
Miles wasn't really sure how he had been able to say all of those things so effortlessly. Normally he struggled with expressing himself but needing to reassure Phoenix had pushed all of that aside.
"When you put it that way, how can I object?" Phoenix gave a small smile.
"You can't," he replied smugly, knowing he gave one of his classic courtroom looks. It caused his companion to chuckle.
They continued chatting and enjoyed their food when it arrived. Miles had even partaken in the ritual of feeding each other a bite. It was sappy, silly, and romantic, and he loved every second. They talked about music, art, hobbies, and reminisced about their childhood adventures. They even shared dessert. They spent the meal enjoying each other's company, laughing, talking, joking. They had even managed to banter with some strong innuendo at times.
After paying, Miles suggested they walk around the area for a little while. It was a gorgeous evening, and they walked hand in hand along the strip. When they came across a grassy area with some benches on the edges, Phoenix suddenly pulled them away from the main walkway and kissed Miles.
"Whatever I did to earn that, I need to make sure I do it again," he quipped before kissing Phoenix again.
"That shouldn't be too difficult, just continue being you." Phoenix kissed him once more but this time there was definitely more heat, a preview of what Miles was expecting to come later. Composing themselves after a moment, they continued walking along the main path again.
"Nick? Edgey? Is that you?" They heard from behind them. They gave each other a look that said "oh shit, here we go."
They turned to look in the direction of the voice and sure enough it was Larry Butz. Miles hadn't told Larry about the relationship, and he suspected Phoenix hadn't either. This would be interesting. Larry had a woman with him so Miles hoped that this would end up being a short visit.
"Hey Larry," Phoenix greeted.
"Aren't you going to introduce me to your friends?" the woman asked.
"Oh, right. This is my lady, Jill. Jill this is Nick…"
"Phoenix Wright," Phoenix corrected.
"And this is Edgey."
"Miles Edgeworth," Miles clarified.
"They were my best buds when we were kids," Larry announced.
Jill looked down from Phoenix to Miles and seemed to guess, "I think we might be interrupting them."
Miles wondered how Larry had managed to find a woman who actually had a good head on her shoulders rather than one of his usual bimbos.
"What are you talking about, baby?" Larry asked, obviously clueless.
"I'm pretty sure they're on a date, honey."
"What!?" Larry finally noticed their clasped hands. "Whoa! I always wondered why I never saw you two dating women. I had no idea you two were gay for each other!"
Miles cringed. Poor choice of words, in his opinion, but he didn't think explaining things would actually be helpful.
Larry continued with crocodile tears, "Why didn't you tell me you were together?"
"You mean other than this reaction?" Phoenix muttered causing Miles and Jill to snicker.
"Not cool, man!"
"Honestly, it has been a very recent development and not many people know," Miles explained.
"Alright, I guess you can get a pass this time," Larry announced.
"We should probably get going and let them have some time alone. It was very nice meeting you both." Jill nodded to them cordially.
As he walked away with Jill, Larry turned back and called out, "Have a good night…" His insinuation was clear.
"That wasn't as bad as I was worried it would be," Phoenix remarked once Larry was out of earshot.
"True, although, I doubt we've heard the last about it from him," Miles reasoned.
"Yeah, just a heads up, but he will probably tell anyone who knows us about our relationship. I just want you to be prepared."
"A reasonable observation." Miles wasn't thrilled about having his private life on display.
They began walking again, but Miles stopped soon after turning Phoenix to face him. He caressed his cheek while Phoenix stayed uncharacteristically quiet. He admired Phoenix's face, shining eyes, soft skin, full lips. He kissed him gently, warmth spreading through his chest. Realizing they were still in public, he suddenly wanted to be in a much more intimate setting. How could he ask without being too forward?
"Perhaps we should continue our date in a more secluded area," he suggested trying to remain calm.
"What did you have in mind?"
Miles shifted, uncomfortable and not knowing how to ask delicately. Phoenix gave an expression of understanding seeming to know what he was implying.
"Maybe somewhere we could be alone?" Phoenix guessed, voice deepening.
"Yes... my place?" Miles proposed timidly, feeling the blush form.
"I'd love to."
Miles unlocked his door. Phoenix entered first and Miles took the opportunity to reciprocate checking him out. He understood why Phoenix had done it earlier. His jeans didn't hide as much as his suit or slacks, and he appreciated seeing the subtle curve of his hips and the fullness of his ass.
"I can see why you prefer the jeans," Miles mused.
"Good sir, you are being quite bold," Phoenix replied in faux offense as he turned toward him.
"Then how would you describe yourself?" Miles shot right back.
"Ouch," Phoenix laughed.
They sat closely on the plush sofa in the living room. Miles was suddenly apprehensive. There were no distractions tonight, no daughter, or even a potential stranger walking by his car. Nothing to stall their progress or an excuse if he got nervous. Jitters were making him tremble ever so slightly. It was just the two of them alone and the tension was thick in the air. He wanted to make a move but his shyness held him back. He kissed him in public, of all places, shouldn't he be able to kiss him in his own home? He was supposed to be a confident person, but he definitely didn't feel like one at the moment.
Phoenix pulled him in for a light kiss, breaking the ice. Miles was grateful. This didn't come easily to him. He rested his hand on the side of Phoenix's face and began kissing him more deeply, as adrenaline began to course through him again. His tongue lightly traced along Phoenix's bottom lip, begging for entrance. Their tongues tousled at the entrance before Phoenix plunged his deeply into Miles's mouth, tasting all it touched. Miles challenged him, sliding his tongue back into Phoenix's mouth licking behind his front teeth.
The moan that came from Phoenix in response caused a jolt to his core, fueling him to continue his exploration. Phoenix's hand caressed along his side and rested on his hip. Miles slid his hand down his companion's chest and rested it on his thigh. Phoenix nipped and sucked at his lips as he pulled him impossibly closer. The pressure on his hip was insistent. Was it an invitation? Boldly, Miles swung one knee over Phoenix's lap to straddle him.
In this new position, Miles had much better access. He caressed Phoenix's cheek lovingly before diving back into kissing him. Phoenix slipped the hand from his waist to his ass letting the other hand join on the other side. When he squeezed, Miles moaned into his mouth. It was very erotic, and he found himself grinding into his partner who moaned in return.
Miles shifted his attention to his neck and began kissing. He popped open the first few buttons allowing him to nip and suck near Phoenix's collar bone. All of the small noises of pleasure encouraged him to continue. One of the hands that had been grabbing his ass was suddenly undoing the buttons on his shirt. All of them were opened swiftly and Phoenix pulled the shirt out from where it was tucked into his jeans.
It suddenly felt very real, and Miles pulled back slightly before Phoenix could finish removing his shirt. He wasn't sure why, but he was reluctant, uncertain. He definitely wanted to be with Phoenix but something was holding him back. He must have shown the apprehension on his face because Phoenix's eyebrows knit together.
"What's wrong?"
"I-I think I'm just nervous. I don't have much… experience."
"I don't have any complaints so far," Phoenix responded playfully.
"Phoenix, please." Miles felt embarrassed. Phoenix held him close, making it difficult to escape should he want to try.
"I'm not trying to dismiss your concerns. I like what you've done so far. I'm not really sure what you're worried about." Phoenix's eyes sparkled with sincerity.
"What if… What if I'm not any good? What if it's just terrible?" He turned his head feeling intensely vulnerable.
"Very unlikely," Phoenix declared plainly.
Miles snapped his eyes back to him, confused.
"Miles, you're good at everything."
"That's simply not true," he countered.
"See, you're even the best at being your harshest critic," Phoenix teased which Miles scoffed at in response. Phoenix turned more serious looking deeply into Miles's eyes. "We don't have to do anything you don't want to do. You can say you want to stop at any time.",
"It's not that. I just want my… performance to live up to your expectations."
Surprisingly Phoenix laughed. "Just being with you has already exceeded my expectations. I've never been with a man either. We will just have to figure it out together. Even if things aren't as good as you hope the first time, we can have fun practicing. Honestly, though, there is no doubt in my mind that whenever we do make love, whether that is tonight or sometime in the future, then it will be better than either of us could have anticipated."
Phoenix looked at him tenderly giving him chills. Miles caressed his face. Despite his fears, he loved Phoenix. Phoenix had been there for him, never given up on him, always had his back, helped him become a better person, without him Miles didn't even know where he would be or what he would be like. This was just the next step, and Phoenix wasn't forcing it on any sort of time table. Miles was overwhelmed with his affection for his companion.
Pressure formed behind his eyes as he pulled Phoenix's head towards his chest, initiating a tender, emotion-filled embrace. Phoenix's arms wrapped around his waist and held him tightly. Devotion and adoration enveloped them, wrapping around them like a cocoon of warmth.
"I love you," Miles declared with no reservations.
"I love you too."
Pulling back enough to look into his eyes, Miles revealed, "I want to try."
Phoenix smiled brightly at him sending his heart fluttering. "Just tell me if you want to stop, okay?"
"Okay," he agreed. Then remembered back to the speech Phoenix had given in the car the previous weekend. "Phoenix? I know it's not great for the mood, but should we discuss our STD status?"
"That would be the responsible thing," Phoenix agreed, looking slightly amused.
"I don't have anything."
"I'm clean, too."
"Well, now that that's settled… Where were we?" Miles asked, smiling seductively.
