Their Blue Eyed Child

Chapter Four

The couple sat there for a few minutes wondering how to start the conversation before Lorelai broke the silence.

"Trust me, a teen mother and an old mother, can't be like anyone else can I?" she said chucking. Luke laughed too, as she was definitely one of a kind.

"What do you want to do? It's your body and I am not going to force you to go through a pregnancy" Luke told her knowing he had a say but ultimately she had to decide.

"If I believed in abortion would I have Rory?" Lorelai questioned "I didn't believe it in then and I don't now, I would never get over the guilt," Lorelai told him "And I am not going through a pregnancy only to have the baby adopted, who knows who they will end up with" Lorelai replied telling him her decision was set.

"What did the doctor mean by it will be risky?" he asked her concerned

"Because of my age, pregnancy puts strain on the body and when you are over 40 you are more likely to miscarry, go into premature labour or have complications doing the birth" Lorelai explained, sensing he was worried. "This is so strange, by the time our baby is ten we will be nearly sixty but I can't think of any other option than having it" Lorelai admitted, "What are your thoughts?" Lorelai asked him.

Luke wrapped his arms around her waist and pulled her towards him, absentmindedly rubbing his fingers over her stomach as he spoke.

"The doctor said this pregnancy was a one in a million chance, it is kind of a miracle it happened, I think it was meant to happen, I know in age we are older but we are both strong and healthy and can you imagine having our own child? No annoying ex's wanting contact or sticking their nose's in, we get to raise them however we want" Luke said smiling "Though I am worried about the risky part" he admitted. Lorelai stroked his cheek.

"It is worth the risk to have a child who looks like you, I love you," she told him. He beamed.

"I love you too, I guess we are having a baby," he said half crying and laughing and worrying all at the same time. He kissed her deeply, still teary and Lorelai laughed.

"Such a softie when you want to be," Lorelai told him as she deepened the kiss. "But let's not tell anyone yet, I want to wait till the risky stage has passed," Lorelai told him. Luke nodded.

"Which is how long?" Luke asked holding her in his arms

"About three months, after the first scan" Lorelai replied. Luke narrowed his eyebrows confused.

"Will you be able to hide it for so long?" Luke asked her. Lorelai laughed.

"I hid my pregnancy with Rory from my parents for seven months, I think I have become an expert at hiding it" she replied before she thought of something.

"Our grandchild is going to be older than our child," Lorelai said in realisation.

"As you said we don't do things normally" Luke replied holding her tighter. She looked at him with a sly smile. "How should we celebrate this news?" Lorelai asked him as she wrapped her arms around her neck.

"I don't know I was thinking we order a pizza" he replied playing along

"You know, pregnancy makes my hormones go all over the place, it will be hard to get me off you in a few months," she told him.

"Oh so there are good parts for you too?" he replied smirking as he kissed her, able to tell after so many years together that smile meant she was in the mood, he pushed her gently back onto the sofa as he kissed her, the bed having been removed long ago.

When they arrived home Luke called out to Rory, she called from her bedroom.

"Hey," Rory said as they appeared in the doorway, Lorelai stepped into the room. "You were ages is everything okay?" Rory asked concerned sitting up and stroking her bump on her bed.

"Just the menopause kid" Lorelai lied knowing she couldn't tell her the truth yet.

"And it took them all that time to tell you?" Rory replied before she took in her mother's slightly frazzled hair and slightly pink cheeks "Okay gross!" Rory replied as she realised why her parents had been so long.

"Oh, so you don't want details?" Lorelai smirked tormenting her

"No!" I want my child to be born to a mother without a mental illness from trauma" Rory replied dramatically as Luke knocked as he always did before entering.

"I have coffee, decaff," he said handing them both a mug of coffee. Rory sighed hating decaff.

"Daddy Luke, can you make me some pie? I have a craving for apple pie" she told him fluttering her eyelashes and pouting slightly knowing that face always won him over.

"Me too" Lorelai replied

"You always have a craving for apple pie" he replied touching her shoulder.

"That is correct, now are you making it or not?" Lorelai asked him with a smile.

"Sure it will take a while though," he told Rory patting her knee as he walked into the kitchen, only then Rory remembered something.

"I have a scan date next week, will you come with me?" she asked her mum. Lorelai beamed.

"Of course I can't wait to see my grandchild," Lorelai told her. "What day is it?" she asked her

"Wednesday at 3" Rory replied. Lorelai nodded and Rory cleared her throat clearly having something else to say.

"Do you think Luke will come?" Rory asked slightly awkwardly. Lorelai beamed at the fact she wanted him there, knowing over the last few years the two were closer than ever before. Lorelai shouted. "LUKE" the man rushed in quickly thinking something was wrong.

"Rory wants to know if you will go with us to her scan next week," Lorelai told him.

Luke tried to hide the happiness he felt at being asked but was not very good at it as he was smiling "If she wants me to" Luke replied

"Yes please Luke, you have shared most things with me, plus you are the grandad" Rory replied. Luke gulped touched and nodded.

"Of course I will kid, wouldn't miss it for anything," he told her, walking in, hugging her slightly before turning back to the kitchen to cook the pie his girls wanted.

The week went by and on Monday, Luke and Rory were the only ones home that afternoon. Lorelai had a meeting at the inn for a function and wouldn't be back until late. Stepfather and stepdaughter were sitting on the sofa, watching an old film on the telly. Luke had lived so long in the house now it wasn't odd anymore for either of them.

"Did you hear? The townspeople are already betting on the sex of the baby" Rory commented as the ads came on.

"Yes, Kirk came in the other day saying people were betting five bucks either way and asked if I wanted to contribute, he said girl is winning because Gilmore's 'seem good at making girls' his words, not mine," Luke said seeing the disgusted look on her face.

"I might pretend its one gender to trick the townspeople and see how long it takes one of us to slip up" Rory replied. Luke looked at her and smiled.

"Do you want a girl?" he asked knowing how close she was to Lorelai.

"A girl would be nice, but I honestly wouldn't mind a boy either, I care more about their health than the gender" Rory replied and Luke nodded and patted her knee.

"As it should be," Luke said glad she wasn't set on one or the other. They stopped talking as the show resumed and when the credits were rolling Rory stood.

"My head hurts I am going to lie down for a bit," she told her stepfather.

"Oh, are you okay? do you need anything?" Luke asked her concerned.

"I am fine don't worry, think I am just overtired," Rory told him as she left to head to her bedroom, lying down on her bed to rest.

When she opened her eyes she realised there was a blanket covering her and came to the conclusion she had fallen asleep. She looked at the clock seeing it was half three, Lorelai wouldn't be home until about four so Luke must have checked on her and put the blanket on her. She smiled at the thought before moaning, her bladder was full again. She got up to go to the toilet as she often did these days, and saw Luke was still in the front room eating a salad as she closed the door.

Luke had just started eating when Rory walked in, he spared her a glance then started talking.

"Right which should we rent tonight, Mamma Mia or Chicago?" Luke asked knowing it was film night and he had long given up trying to get out of it.

"Luke..." Rory said as he rambled, Luke looked up because her voice sounded so different, she sounded terrified, worried and upset all at the same time.

"I'm bleeding..." she revealed. Luke gasped. He wasn't too knowledgeable about pregnancy but he knew bleeding during it was very serious and meant something was wrong. He jumped up, staying calm even if he was worried.

"Put your shoes on I am taking you to the hospital," Luke told her not asking questions or wasting time but taking control of the situation. Rory rushed into her room, throwing on the first pair of shoes she saw and when she left he was already holding her coat, he put his arm around her and rushed them to the truck, he helped her up and made sure she was settled before rushing to the driver's side.

"I am going to call your mum on the way," Luke told her as he threw on his belt "It will waste too much time stopping to get her," Luke told her knowing he had to get there as soon as possible. Rory nodded just in shock as Luke backed out the driveway and dialled the inn as he did so.

"Dragonfly inn, Lorelai speaking," the dark-haired woman said

"I am taking Rory to the hospital she's bleeding," Luke told her not beating around the bush.

"Oh my god," Lorelai said feeling tears well in her eyes "Is she going to..." Lorelai started then stopped not able to form the words she wanted to say.

"I don't know but hopefully if we get there quickly they can resolve it" Luke replied

"I am leaving now," Lorelai told him "St. Joesph's?" she asked

"Yes, see you soon," Luke said hanging up and putting his hand back on the wheel. He looked at Rory out the corner of his eye, she was silently crying.

"I am going to lose it aren't I?" she stated as he drove

"Don't think like that, it could be nothing?" he told her not wanting her to lose all hope

"It's karma, I am carrying the baby off a married man which we didn't even plan, I deserve this" Rory cried to herself. Luke patted her knee.

"Never say that again, you do NOT deserve it, did Loelai deserve to lose you because she chose to have sex as a teenager? Of course, she didn't no one deserves it" Luke replied wishing he could do more to help as Rory just cried, thinking her worst fears had come true.

Luke pulled into the hospital and helped Rory out the trunk before they rushed into the hospital, Luke took them straight to maternity, holding Rory close in the lift, feeling her shaking. As soon as the doors opened Luke shot through them and rushed to the desk.

"My stepdaughter is three months pregnant and she is bleeding" Luke stated. The recipient looked at him and nodded "Name?" she asked Rory.

"Lorelai Leigh Gilmore" she replied. The woman typed then turned back to them.

"Take a seat, someone will be will you soon," she told them

"Soon? She needs someone now" Luke stated knowing precious time was passing.

"The nurse is just finishing with a patient, you will be next, she is a priority" the nurse replied. Luke nodded, satisfied and led Rory to the waiting room.

"Do you want a drink or anything?" he asked her. She shook her head leaning her head on his shoulder the way her mum often did, to scared to say anything. Luke rubbed her back, terrified himself and kissed her head, feeling her fear.
