At CTU computer technician Jamey Farrell alerted George Mason about a possible pattern.

Jamey: Local police said that a man was killed in a hit and run incident about thirty minutes ago. And about 15 minutes ago a woman shot her husband before turning the gun on herself.
Mason: What's your point?
Jamey: Because one of those killed was the chief of a fire station here in D.C., the other was a doctor, chief of therasic surgery at Walter Reid. One of these deaths might not seem unusual.
Mason: But together, it's what you do if you plan to hit a major city with a terrorist attack. I'll alert the president, good work Jamey.

Mason began calling president Donovan.

Donovan: Director Mason, have you learned anything?
Mason: Possibly. A fire chief and the head of therasic surgery at Walter Reid were both killed in suspicious incidents in the last thirty minutes. Whatever the terrorists are planning, they're trying to damage the ability of first responders to reduce casualties. We're still searching for exactly who killed these people. We're also monitring the extremist websites, but they're noticeably quiet lately.
Donovan: In other words they're done talking.
Mason: I believe so mr president. Whatever they're planning is going down today. You and dr Hekmetyar might be targets.
Donovan: I always assumed I would be a target for these peace efforts. Good work Mason, please pass my thanks to your staff.

Curtis Manning is driving to work. He had hoped he'd have a day off, but with the president meeting with Hekmetyar, some extremists were apparently trying to stop this. There was always the hope that the incident on the bus was just a stupid prank, and that would be the end of it, but the realist in Curtis tended to doubt it. As Curtis was driving he saw something unusual.

Liam honed in on his latest target. Kristen was the regional director for 911 emergency services in Washington D.C. Her death would make it more difficult for first responders to help the survivors after what came next. Liam had been born in Northern Ireland, his family were unionists, loyal to England. Seeing loved ones killed by IRA terrorist bombs, Liam joined the Ulster Defense Association. They had fought against the nationalists by any means neccessary. Liam participated in kidnapping, assasinated IRA diplomats. He even planted a bomb at a Halloween celebration to murder random catholics. After the Good Friday peace agreement the UDA evetually disarmed. Liam knew he couldn't function in a new peaceful Ireland, so he went to Columbia and offered his services to drug cartels. He went from commiting horrible acts for a cause, to doing it for money. Ironically he sometimes now worked alongside former IRA members who also couldn't function in a peaceful world. And now Liam was even murdering those who only wanted to save lives, kidnapping that baby to force her mother to shoot her own husband. Now Liam was trying to murder Kristen. But Liam had the bad luck to be noticed by Curtis Manning, second in command at CTU Washington. When Curtis saw the car crash, he at first thought that Liam was just a careless driver. But then Liam got out of his car, with a gun. Curtis got out of his car, with his own gun, and told Liam to freeze. Their was a brief gunfight, and Liam was wounded. Liam knew that his time was up. His only choices were prison, or death. If he were arrested, CTU would likely force him to reveal who his employers were. Liam didn't have much honor left, but he could do one thing. Before Curtis could stop him Liam bit down on a cyanide capsule, ending his own life. Curtis questioned Kristen. When he realized what she did for a living he called director Mason.

Mason: Curtis, where are you? We need all hads on deck right now.
Curtis: No kidding, I was just involved in a shootout on the highway.
Mason: Road rage?
Curtis: A man just tried to murder the regional director of the 911 emergency services, he swallowed cyanide before I could question him, I'll send you his pictures.
Mason: We've already had two other suspicious deaths of first responders in the last hour. Whatever's going down is happenning today.
Curtis: I'll get to CTU now.

Jack and Audrey were driving to meet their contact. Jack saw were they were, in theory they could drive by Kim's house, maybe see her briefly. But Jack knew he couldn't do that to her, put her in that kind of danger. They had to just keep moving, and hope that they died of old age before anyone realized who they were.
