Chapter 13: Awake

Bella's POV

I scanned my surroundings. My strong eyesight took in even the most minute details of my environment. I could see everything with perfect clarity. I could hear everything with perfect clarity. Including the sound of my babies beating hearts. A sound that I had fought so hard to protect.

My babies? Where were they? I wanted to see them. My last memories of them were human memories. But trying to see through the lens of my human eyes was like trying to see through muddy water. I remember EJ biting me, thus kick starting my transformation, and that was it.

"Bella? How are you feeling?" I heard Carlisle ask.

I had already forgotten that Carlisle and Alice were there. Why were they here? How had they found me? Then I remembered that they had mentioned that Edward and Liam were in Italy. That things had not gone well. What had happened while I was undergoing my transformation? I had so many questions and so absolutely no answers.

"I feel different," that was certainly one way of putting it. "How did you two find me? Where am I?"

"Bella I'm sure that you have a lot of questions and we'll answer them shortly. But first-"

"Where is my babies? I want to see them,"

"They're perfectly fine. But right now I think you should get your thirst under control before you see them,"

I hadn't even thought about my thirst until he mentioned it. Now that I'd been made aware of my own thirst it was all that I could think about. My throat felt as if it were on fire. Though it was a different kind of fire than the one that I had just experienced.

"I want to see my babies," I didn't care about my thirst at all. I wanted to see my children. My thirst could wait a little while longer.

"Bella they are half human and have functioning beating hearts. It's better for them if you're not thirsty," Alice's words made me stop and think. I was a newborn vampire. What if I saw them and lost control? I couldn't risk something like that happening. If I accidentally killed them because I lost control of my thirst I would never be able to forgive myself. So I agreed to go hunting.

Alice and Carlisle both went with me. Finding somewhere to hunt was a very difficult task in a place like Orlando, Florida. Then finally we found a wildlife preserve outside of the city. Hunting was easy. Once I really knew what I was doing it was like second nature to me. The blood soothed my aching throat. Now that my thirst was finally satiated I wanted to go back and see my babies.

"What happened? How did you guys find me?" I asked when we had finished hunting.

"When you left we searched for you. We searched the entire west coast of the United States. Edward and Jacob were in Oregon when they encountered another coven who also happened to be looking for a human girl pregnant with a half human baby,"

I immediately thought of Lizzie. I hoped that she was doing okay.

"How is Lizzie?"

"She's going to be fine. She delivered a healthy baby girl yesterday. She's undergoing her transformation as we speak. She's being well looked after by her family. So is the baby. So anyway after the encounter we decided to pull our resources together and help each other look for you girls. It was Lizzie's family who thought to check the airlines and whether or not anyone with your names had recently flown out of Washington and Oregon,"

Damm it! We'd never even thought about using a fake name when booking flights. So much for thinking of everything.

"and when we got here we were able to track you down to the hotel. We could smell blood. Your blood. We had no idea what happened and we feared the worst. We saw that boy Liam leaving with you and Lizzie. We had no idea you'd just given birth when we tracked all of you down,"

"My babies,"

"Are perfectly safe. Bella I'm so sorry. We never should have tried to force you into aborting them. It was wrong and I hope that in time you will forgive me," Carlisle's voice rang with sincerity. I'd already forgiven him. "Edward feels even worse than I do. He loves those babies so much. He hates himself for even once thinking that they were monsters,"

He loves those babies so much. The words made me smile and my heart overflow with happiness. Edward loved our babies. He finally realized how wrong he was. We could finally be the happy family that I'd dreamed of. I couldn't wait to meet my two little angels.

They were even more perfect then I had imagined. As soon as we got home I met them for the first time since awakening to my new life. I was a mother. I couldn't believe it. I was a mother. If I could cry I would of right then and there. They were beautiful and perfect. They were also bigger. These two looked like they were three or four months old rather than days.

"I was only out for two days?"

"Their growth rate is unprecedented," Carlisle said. "Although from what we have learned from Liam fast growth is to be expected,"

Renesmee reached up and placed her hand on my cheek. I gasped when I saw an image of myself. It wasn't like looking in a mirror. It was as if I were looking at myself from the perspective of another person. There was so much blood and I looked like death itself. Then the image vanished.

"What was that?" I asked.

"What did you see?" Alice asked me.

"It was myself. I think,"

"She must have showed you what she was thinking," Rosalie added. "She's gifted,"

"What about EJ?"

"EJ hasn't shown any supernatural gifts. As far as we are aware he's normal. Well as normal as half human half vampire baby can be," Rosalie said.

I smiled at my little boy. "That's okay my beautiful little boy. You're perfect just the way you are," I cooed at him. He had a curious look on his face. Then the expression on his face changed to one that could only be described as frustration. It was really cute.

"So where is Edward?" I remembered hearing that he was in Italy but I had been in so much pain then that I was not sure I heard correctly.

"He is in Italy," Carlisle spoke. "He and Liam had to visit the Volturi,"

"Why?"

"Well Bella a lot has happened while you were undergoing your transformation. Two days ago Edward EJ and Ness-"

"Who?"

"Oh I mean Renesmee. Jacob started calling her Nessie and the nickname kind of stuck,"

"Jacob? What does he have to do with anything?"

"I better let him explain that when he gets back. Anyway Edward took them to the mall. When they were there EJ needed a diaper change and Edward had to go buy diapers since he didn't think to bring some along with him. When Edward was changing him EJ peed all over him-"

I could not contain my laughter. I only wished I was there to see that happen. "Funny but I don't see what the problem is," I laughed.

"The problem is what happened next. Edward needed to get a new shirt. So he went to the closest men's store he could find. This is when my brother did something so beyond idiotic that I'm not even sure you'll forgive him for this," Alice was fuming now.

"What did he do?" I couldn't imagine Edward doing something so horrible that I wouldn't forgive him for it.

"He left them outside of the store because tbe store was too crowded and that he would be in there for only a few minutes. He left them alone outside of a store. When he came back for them they were gone. They had been kidnapped. He tracked down the kidnapper which turned out to be another vampire. A minion of the Volturi. Edward ended up getting arrested because the police thought he was the kidnapper. I had a vision of Edward escaping jail so I went to find him and find out what happened. When I tracked down Edward he told me the whole story. Liam had followed me and together we tracked down the kidnapper. The other vampire had already told the Volturi about your babies. So Edward and Liam offered to go to Italy in their place to talk to the Volturi. Everything went horribly wrong though. First of all their is Liam's human family. The Volturi now know about his grandparents knowing the existence of our world. Liam is now in trouble for violating the law of secrecy. Now the Volturi believe that all hybrids are a liability and are not to be trusted to keep our secret. Edward and Liam were able to escape and they're on their way here right now. But the Volturi are not going to stop now that they know of EJ's and Nessie's existence. So because my darling brother left your children alone in a mall their lives and ours are in danger,"
