Chapter Five – Flashback One – The Survival of the Longbottoms

*flashback*

"Remus, we need to talk!" calls out Sirius from the parlor.

Remus gets up from the dining room table where he was having a late breakfast, and rushes into the parlor. Sitting down across from Sirius, Remus asks, "What's wrong, Sirius?"

"You remember what James and Lily said about a prophecy and that it could refer to Harry or Neville?" states Sirius.

Remus's eyes open wide and replies, "Yes? What about it?"

"What if the Longbottom's know about Voldemort's downfall and assume that they are safe, despite there still being the matter that most of the death eaters haven't been apprehended, yet." responds Sirius.

Remus's eyes open in realization and exclaims, "And you're worried that the death eaters may retaliate at the Longbottoms who may think that because Voldemort is dead that they are safe?"

Sirius nods his head, and replies, "Yes. I think we need to tell them somehow."

"I'll grab my cloak. Let's meet here in five minutes, and we'll go to Augusta's and hope she knows more about the location of Alice and Frank." yells Remus, dashing up the stairs to his room.

Sirius quickly follows Remus's lead and runs up the stairs to his room and grabs a freshly laundered cloak, checks to make certain he has his wand, and tears out of his room, heading towards the parlor. Taking a handful of floo powder, Remus tosses it into the fire place and yells, "Longbottom Manor", and taking his cue from Remus, Sirius takes a handful of floo powder, throws it into the fire, and yells, "Longbottom Manor".

Arriving at Longbottom Manor, Remus jumps out of the fire and dusts himself off, while Sirius arrives and immediately rolls out of the fireplace, wand out, ready to hex anything malicious.

"What are you two doing in my abode?" accuses Augusta Longbottom, rising up from her chair across from the fireplace.

Sirius hastily puts his wand in a pocket in the inside of the cloak and Remus replies, "Madam Longbottom, we request an audience, if you have the time."

Augusta gives the two invaders a terse nod of her head as a sign to continue, and Remus flashes a brief smile and continues, "I am Remus Lupin, and this man beside me is Sirius Black. We are, were, close friends to James and Lily Potter. Sirius mentioned your son and daughter in law were advised by Albus Dumbledore to go into hiding, using a Fidelius Charm, like the Potters were. We are concerned that Alice, Frank, and young Neville are in danger."

"I see. Albus gave me the knowledge of where my son and daughter in law are, and one can not force another to give up the secret." responds Augusta politely, but firmly.

"If Albus is the Secret Keeper, then he may have let it slip to one of Voldemort's supporters. I still don't trust Snivellus, despite what Albus says about the loyalty of him." growls Sirius.

"Sirius, what has happened, has happened. Leave Severus alone." says Remus calmly.

Augusta's eyes harden at the sound of Severus's name being spoken and says, "I'll take what you've said under consideration."

"One last piece of information before we depart, Remus and I are the legal guardians of Harry Potter, after Voldemort killed James and Lily." growls Sirius, turning and heading towards the fireplace.

"Wait! I'll go talk with them. Just wait here for a few minutes." responds Augusta, rising from her chair and striding away into the house.

"Do you think we were successful in convincing her that Alice, Frank, and Neville are in trouble?" asks Remus.

Sirius nods his head, and continues his pacing. Roughly ten minutes later Augusta appears with Frank and Alice, with baby Neville in Alice's arms.

Frank steps forward and asks tentatively, "The Potters are actually dead?"

Sirius nods and speaks quietly, "Harry is the only survivor, and he resides with Remus and I at our undisclosed home. We are offering to allow you all to stay at our house as long as needed. We have plenty of spare rooms for you all to choose from, if you all accept our offer."

Alice and Frank look at each other briefly before Alice asks, "And you're certain we are at risk?"

Remus steps forward and replies, "Between Sirius's and mine knowledge, we believe the threat is great enough that you all should reside elsewhere at the least. Our home is protected by a Fidelius Charm as well, but only Kreacher, our house elf, our owls, and the two of us know where the house is at. We wish to provide you all a safe haven for as long as you all wish, and least until the death eaters at large are captured."

"We'll accept your offer, if we can place some monitoring charms around the hideaway that Dumbledore gave us." states Frank.

"Certainly. But don't stay too long, as we'd like to depart soon." says Sirius.

Remus punches Sirius in the shoulder hard enough and says apologetically, "Sirius means well, but he isn't a wordsmith. He's also paranoid and would like to not see more preventable deaths."

Alice laughs and replies, "It's fine. We understand, and we thank you. Frank can go do the spellwork, and I'll gather some of our possessions for our undisclosed length of time stay at your home."

Alice walks to Augusta, hands her Neville, and then follows Frank into the house, presumably towards the hideaway. Soon enough they both return, Frank empty handed, and Alice with two bags of clothes.

"I need a chance to retrieve some possessions before I come along with you." states Augusta.

Remus smiles and replies, "I'll stay here and wait for you then. Alice, you, Frank, and Neville can go with Sirius and pick out what suite of rooms you'd like to make home."

Alice and Frank nod, and follow Sirius through the floo to a destination called "The Marauder's Oasis".

Twenty minutes later, Augusta arrives from deep inside the house with multiple floating trunks and follows Remus.

Later that day, after dinner, when Sirius, Remus, Alice, Frank, and Augusta are in the living room enjoying some conversation, Frank goes rigid for multiple moments, and then slumps into his chair. Alice is at his side in a flash and asks in a concerned voice, "Frank! What's wrong?"

A few moments of silence occur before Frank replies wearily, "Our hideaway that Albus gave us was attacked and destroyed. I felt dark magic coursing through the building, destroying the monitoring charms."

Augusta turns snow white at this revelation and turns her attention to Sirius and Remus and speaks quietly, "I thank you two for your foresight to warn us and get us to this safe location. The wards at Longbottom Manor have not been tripped, and I hope they do not."

Sirius grimaces at Frank's news, while Remus says quietly, "You all are welcome. And feel free to stay here as long as you feel is necessary for your safety."

Author note: TrueLoveAlwaysLP asked in a review how Neville's parents are alive, and I originally planned for the information to be short and a minor part of a chapter, one hundred words or so, but then thought better of it. I hope you all enjoyed this impromptu chapter.
