Chapter 1:
Snowkit
Snowkit opened her eyes, still blurry from sleep. It was still dark outside, perfect for sneaking out! But the only problem was, it might be too dark to see where you were going… She couldn't sneak out, last time they were nearly caught! She made up her mind.
"Psssst!" Snowkit prodded Cloudkit-who was most likely to agree-awake.
"Wha?" Cloudkit opened one eye sleepily.
"We're going to sneak out! Echokit is coming too, I think, do you think that Mintkit will agree? Shimmerkit is sleeping in the medicine den." Snowkit whispered. As soon as she explained everything, Cloudkit's head jerked up.
"Did some cat say sneak out? I'm coming!" Snowkit prodded Echokit awake. She looked up. Cloudkit waved her tail for her to follow. She got up then shook her head. 'Why can't she just come, she doesn't have to TRY to wake everyone up!' Snowkit thought. As if Echokit read her thoughts, she padded very quietly out of the nursery den. This was their second time sneaking out. Last time they didn't get caught but maybe this time they would. Snowkit was proud that she was the oldest within Echokit, Cloudkit and her-not so much of Mintkit and Shimmerkit though… She puffed out her chest and was about to go walking through the entrance of the camp when Cloudkit and Echokit pulled her back by the tail.
"Thornberry is on duty!" They whispered in Snowkit's ear. Snowkit rolled her eyes. How could she be so forgetful?
"We need to go through the dirt-place tunnel then." Echokit glanced at the dirt-place tunnel uneasily. "Creampelt once told me that there are weird things in there that are unimaginable…" Snowkit glanced at Echokit's dark blue gaze, it was glazed with worry.
"He probably meowed that to make sure that you wouldn't do things like this since we always have a guard at the entrance." Snowkit felt uneasy herself. She waved her tail for them to follow her into the dirt-place. As she walked in the dirt-place she felt like something was not right "Guys somethings not right I can feel it" Snowkit meowed, she felt as lost as a helpless kit.
"Well just move on. If you see anything tell us and run." Cloudkit rolled her eyes and walked on.
Chapter 2
Cloudkit
Cloudkit -who was quite undaunted by the nursery tale- scurried to the dirtplace tunnel quietly. What could possibly go wrong? (many things) Once they were out of sound from Thornberry, she bounded ahead. She forgot how bad the dirtplace smelled.
"Eww!" She meowed as she walked gingerly across the dirtplace tunnel
Suddenly, there was a loud meow from Snowkit, she had her paw stuck down in the sand.
"Please don't say I stepped in some dirt…" She begged.
"Umm… You did……….." Echokit broke the news to Snowkit. "Rub it against a leaf."
What felt like moons, Snowkit was finally ready to walk further.
"Run from here!" Echokit raced away from the dirt tunnel, towards the two trees. Cloudkit knew that Echokit didn't like dirt in her claws. There was a rustle in the bushes. Cloudkit turned around. The rustling stopped.
"Guys!!!!! Help! I heard a rustle in the bushes!" Cloudkit fled to where Snowkit and Echokit looked in the bushed, their eyes flickering side to side. Snowkit's blue eyes looked terrified while Echokit looked scared but determined to live. There was another rustle. The scent that she could pick up was musky leaves. The scent was familiar yet Cloudkit could not put her paw on who…
"Guys, I think I know who this is!" Echokit stretched her nose out to the bushes. "Foxkit, come out, I know you're there!" Echokit, Snowkit and Cloudkit didn't really like Foxkit so much… A muffle came out from the bushes. It sounded like: "Why did I have to scratch then?" Finally Foxkit poked her face out.
"Get back to camp now!" She huffed, clearly embarrassed by being exposed from one moon old kits.
"No, we are going to explore!" Snowkit retorted, she was the stubborn one.
"Fine then, I will report you." Foxkit glared at Snowkit.
"So you can go outside even though you are also only a kit, what will they say when they discover that you found us and have been stalking us- plus sneaking outside of camp to annoy us?" Snowkit took in a deep long breath after she had said everything.
"Fine, but don't talk about this to anyone. And when I say anyone, I mean anyone."
Echokit looked down at her paws, maybe they shouldn't have left camp, it was much safer in camp-and friendlier. Then they walked back to camp in silence.
Chapter 3:
Echokit
Echokit's legs were stiff from the night time excursion. Her paws were sore from walking on sharp stones. Mintkit was already awake and he slipped out of the nursery to share tongues with some of the other kits. Echokit sat up. She looked at Birdflight, her mother, who was sitting up right, staring at the nursery walls.
"Let all cats old enough to catch their own prey, join me underneath tall oak for a clan meeting!" Flowerstar had the distant gaze that Sandfur had when she came back from the Moonpool! Could this mean that this meeting could actually be interesting?
"I have had a dream. A prophecy to do with our clanmates. I have dreamt that Moonstar, the first leader of Moonclan, came to me and sent me a prophecy. He said; 'Seek what you can find in the echoing cave, there the clouding snow stays, for only it can stop the forest from a raging war, if not to stop it, to defeat it. One who may be at two places at once, and one who may see all of your thoughts, and one that may do things without physical contact.' " Flowerstar's amber eyes were distant as if she were remembering every word of it.
"What does that mean?" Mouseclaw called out from the ground.
"I don't know, but if you know what it means, please tell me now-or in my den." Flowerstar scanned the ground, looking for cats that might have any knowledge. She looked at Sandfur, the old ginger she-cat, unfortunately, she didn't know.
The meeting was over and Echokit, Snowkit, Cloudkit, Mintkit, and Shimmerkit walked back into the nursery. In the nursery, Alderkit, Patchkit and Stonekit waited for Echokit, Snowkit and Cloudkit. 'What's all this about? Surely because of one prophecy, the whole clan can't be shaken that bad!' Echokit thought.
"Guys! There are three prophecy cats, it must be my litter! We are three! Or Foxkit's litter…" Patchkit was blabbering on about the prophecy.
"It doesn't seem like a prophecy that comes from Starclan… Maybe it is a prophecy that means really dangerous things are coming…" Echokit looked at Alderkit thoughtfully.
"But the prophecy must be talking about cats! Why else would the prophecy have been given to us?" Patchkit hopped around in excitement. From the way his amber eyes gleamed, Echokit didn't want to disappoint him so she just dipped her head.
Echokit walked out of the den into the clearing, Snowkit and Cloudkit followed. Echokit had called a meeting for the three. Behind the warrior's den, Echokit started.
"I had a dream, I was moving a branch off of the bank near the abandoned twoleg nest. Maybe we are the three…" She started.
"Yeah, me too, I had a dream that I doubled myself and one of me was in camp while the other was in Shadowclan territory!" Snowkit's eyes widened honestly.
"Yeah, same, I had a dream that I was controlling Birdflight's mind to make her give me more milk!" Cloudkit snickered at the end of her sentence. Echokit looked thoughtfully at Snowkit, then to Cloudkit, maybe they just wanted to be the three, or maybe they were the three…
"Okay, let's try to do what we did in our dreams now." She looked at Snowkit, then at Cloudkit. Snowkit started first, it was unexplainable what she did, she closed her eyes . . . And suddenly there were two of her! She did it again and suddenly there were three of her!
Then Cloudkit looked Echokit straight in the eye. Suddenly she started to hop on two paws-then climb a small tree!
Echokit then stared at a twig on the floor, and forced herself to move the twig. She didn't even need to use so much effort! It just flew straight up in the air!
"WOW!" Cloudkit breathed, she looked at Snowkit and Echokit. "That was AWESOME! We really are the three!"
"Yeah, but what do we do with the powers?" fretted Snowkit. Echokit shared her worries.
"Oh, c'mon guys, live a little! Can't you see? We could tell Flowerstar, become heroes, maybe be the most important cats!"snorted Cloudkit.
Echokit and Snowkit both sighed. "Seriously, Cloudkit. Don't you see? This is a HUGE toll on us! We should use our powers for good, not our own needs!" meowed Echokit, glancing at Snowkit, who nodded.
Cloudkit looked disappointed. "I suppose you're right . . . But at least the 'good' we're trying to do is our need as well!" she added, her hazel eyes sparkling with mischief.
Snowkit rolled her eyes as Echokit curled her tail in amusement.
Chapter 4:
Snowkit
Snowkit woke up in the nursery. Two moons had passed since she figured out that she was one of the three, the sisters didn't know if they should tell Flowerstar yet, they had been debating whether they should or not yesterday. Three more moons until they were apprentices, she couldn't wait! Only if cats noticed her more. She didn't really want Mintkit to be jealous when he found out that he and Shimmerkit weren't going to be one of the three. Suddenly, a voice broke Snowkit out of her thoughts.
"Hi!" Patchkit meowed nervously. "Do you want to go to the fresh-kill pile and eat something together?"
"Sure." Snowkit tried to keep her cool but this was the first time anyone out of her family had asked her to eat with them. And besides, this was the nicest cat in the clan-except for family. Of course she had to say yes! Her blue eyes sparkled as she walked out of the nursery with Patchkit by her side. This is how she always imagined it to be. Her and Patchkit.
As she and Patchkit reached the fresh-kill pile, Daisykit interrupted.
"Hey, don't you want to go to the-er… um… medicine cat den with me?" She asked awkwardly.
"Actually, I am already busy!" He replied. Snowkit knew that Daisykit had a huge crush on Patchkit-but she already had his and her future planned. She nudged him away from her and to the fresh-kill pile. They shared a mouse and chatted for a while.
Chapter 5:
Cloudkit
Cloudkit had enjoyed her time talking to Stonekit. She had always known that they would get along together. Ever since a moon ago, Cloudkit had been hanging out with Stonekit. He was nice to her and always ignored Spottedkit when she tried to flirt with him, he had always been loyal to her. He always shared food with her and everyone thought that they were going to become mates. She had always imagined this would happen but never thought that it would make Spottedkit so angry! Even though she might be Foxkit's sister, she wouldn't like it if that happened to her! Cloudkit was sitting next to Stonekit. He was talking to her about something but she wasn't listening. She was thinking about Echokit, Snowkit got her way with Patchkit and she had got her way with Stonekit, but Echokit had not talked to Alderkit in a long time. Maybe he liked her back but just didn't have the courage to tell? Echokit was often alone, not knowing where she belonged anymore, she worried often for her youngest sister…
"Then, I saw you sitting at the bottom of the tree…." Stonekit blabbered on about a few moments in his life.
"Cool!" Cloudkit meowed, trying to force some enthusiasm in her voice even though she was only half listening.
"Yeah, then I went to Sandfur's den to get my paws looked at…" He blabbered on and on, not aware that she wasn't really listening.
"Go on…" She mumbled to him. He blabbered on and on…. Finally, Birdflight called her back into the nursery.
Chapter 6:
Echokit
Echokit looked around the fresh-kill pile, her sisters had gotten what they wanted. But she hadn't. Alderkit hadn't so much as looked at her! She sat down and slumped against a tree stump. Was there anything that she could do correctly? Suddenly there was a voice.
"Hey Echokit!" The voice meowed brightly. Echokit didn't even react. "Hello? It's me." The voice's meow cracked with sadness in the end. Still, Echokit didn't react. She heard paw steps walk away. Then heard another voice.
"Hey! Hi Alderkit, I told you she wasn't interested in you! Maybe you should try someone else… for example… me!" Foxkit's voice was in flirty mode. Then with a jolt, Echokit realized that she just ignored her crush, he even wanted to be friends with her-from what she had heard just now.
"No thanks, when you said you didn't like me, were you lying?" He asked, his voice weary.
"No, I was just saying…" Foxkit's amber eyes looked straight into Alderkit's eyes.
"I'll try again." He meowed and then turned to Echokit. "Hi Echokit!" He forced some joyfulness into his voice.
"Hi! What are you planning to do today?" Echokit's heart thumped in her chest.
"Oh, not sure actually… Do you want to share some fresh-kill with me?" His voice had some hopefulness in it.
"Sure, that is your favourite prey?" She asked, this was how Snowkit and Cloudkit had started their sentences in the beginning.
"Starling what about yours?" Alderkit's amber eyes locked with Echokit's, then quickly back at the fresh-kill pile. She thought she saw some kind of emotion but he had been too quick.
"Starling too!" She took a starling from the fresh kill pile and then walked to a stump.
"Here, I like this part." She pulled out some, then bit into the leg. She nodded her head for him to take a bit.
Chapter 7:
Snowkit
Snowkit glanced across the clearing, to her surprise, she saw Echokit sharing tongues with Alderkit, which one of them asked to share prey? Probably Alderkit because he looks more embarrassed…
"Hey, Alderkit's finally friends with Echokit!" Patchkit noticed it too!
"Yeah, they're friends just like us!" She meowed. Patchkit's tail drooped.
"I thought we were more than just friends…" He sighed. Snowkit felt more affection burst from her heart.
"We are more than just friends!" She meowed. Patchkit blushed. Snowkit blushed as well, realising what she had just said. She had never been more embarrassed in her life. There was an awkward silence, until Snowkit decided she shouldn't act like this.
"So . . . Want to go get some prey? I can see a juicy looking vole, your favourite!" Snowkit meowed. Patchpelt blushed again, but seemed to have calmed down more.
"Sure, I'm starving!"
After they finished with their prey, Daisykit interrupted them. Again. "Hey, Patchkit! Let's go to the dirtplace, I need to do some dirt." Suddenly her eyes widened with horror.
"Uh . . . Daisykit?" asked Snowkit, fighting her urge to roll over on the floor in laughter. Patchkit also looked like he wanted to do the same thing as well.
Daisykit let out an embarrassed wail and fled into the nursery, where in a minute Snowkit and Patchkit heard the soothing mews of Petalfur, Daisykit's mother. Snowkit and Patchkit couldn't keep it in anymore. They burst out laughing, and talked and joked until dusk.
Chapter 8:
Cloudkit
"Stonekit?" asked Cloudkit anxiously. "Stonekit!" repeated Cloudkit, louder this time. They had been play-fighting, and Cloudkit had accidentally landed right on top of him. He hadn't moved from that spot where she had knocked him over. Just as she started to really worry, Stonekit leapt up and pinned her to the ground.
"Worried?" he teased.
"Hey!" mewed Cloudkit crossly. Their eyes met and Cloudkit felt her cheeks burn. Stonekit slowly clambered off her, allowing Cloudkit to jump up. "I will SO get you back for that!" she warned.
Stonekit rolled his eyes. "Yeah, right!"
"RAWR!" yowled Cloudkit, leaping at him, her claws sheathed. Stonekit easily dodged her.
"Oh, it is SO on!"
In the end, Cloudkit won, although it was close. She gave Stonekit a smirk, and gave a leap. "C'mon, race you to the fresh-kill pile! Last one's a mouse!"
"Ok, ok, I'm a mouse. But can you blame me, you're more nimble!" panted Stonekit as he skidded to a stop next to the pile of fresh-kill.
"Sure, sure."
"Uh . . . Stonekit? Why are you hanging out with that . . . Cat?" sniffed Spottedkit. Cloudkit scowled. Stonekit frowned.
"Why shouldn't I, Spottedkit?" asked Stonekit, still frowning.
"Oh, well, I'm obviously more pretty, and smart, and-"
"Ok, ok, enough about you. Can you please GO AWAY." meowed Cloudkit stiffly.
"How rude!" mewed Spottedkit, sticking her tail and nose in the air, which would have been a bold approach if Stonekit and Cloudkit both weren't smirking. Spottedkit strutted away, her tail and nose still up in the air.
Chapter 9:
Echokit
"Alderkit, it's like you have an eternal space in your belly! How do you fit in that much food?!" asked Echokit, in an exasperated voice. "If you keep eating like that, you'll be as fat as Adderclaw!"
Alderkit looked up from his third starling. "Hey, I told you I liked starling!" He went back to chewing his prey. Then he looked back up at her. "Besides, I'm not sure anyone can be as fat as Adderclaw," he joked.
"Shhh, he's right there!" whispered Echokit. Sure enough, Adderclaw was sitting right outside the elders den.
"Well, we're crowfood. Let's go away before he comes over here and gives us an eternal lecture," Alderkit muttered, leading her behind the nursery with his third and fourth Starling in his mouth.
"I wonder who our mentors will be!" he meowed thoughtfully.
"Yeah, I hope I get somebody good!" Then the topic fell. There was an awkward silence, and Alderkit and Echokit stared into each other's eyes.
"Ahem, am I interrupting something?" meowed and angry voice. They turned around to see Foxkit glaring at them.
"Oh, hello, Foxkit. It's SUCH a pleasure to see you!" said Echokit sarcastically.
"Yes, it should be. Be glad I'm spending my precious time talking to you. Ugh, why am I talking to you again? Oh, right . . . So, ALDERKIT, let's go now." Foxkit turned and padded away, but halfway through she turned and meowed angrily at Alderkit, "Well?! Are you coming or not?!"
"Sorry Foxkit," he meowed apologetically. "I was talking to Echokit."
Foxkit muttered something rude about Echokit under her breath and stalked away.
Chapter 10:
Cloudkit, Echokit, Snowkit
"Snowkit, Echokit, Cloudkit, Mintkit. Please come forward." Flowerstar meowed, her bright green gaze sparkling. All four kits stepped toward the tall tree. Their parents, Birdflight and Stormpelt had pride glistening in their eyes.
"You each have reached six moons. Today, you will become apprentices.
"Echokit, please come forward." Echokit padded anxiously up to the oak tree as Flowerstar jumped down to touch her muzzle to her head.
"From this moment on, you will be Echopaw. Your mentor will be Brightcloud. Brightcloud, train her well." Echopaw dipped her head in embarrassment. She touched noses with Brightcloud.
"Cloudkit." Cloudkit walked up to the tree, determination shining in her eyes. "From this moment on, you will be Cloudpaw. Your mentor will be Harenflight. Harenflight, train her well." She touched her muzzle to her nose.
"Snowkit. From this moment on, you will be known as Snowpaw. Your mentor will be Mossfire. Mossfire, train her well." Snowpaws eyes widened, then she touched noses with Mossfire.
"Mintkit." He came padding up. "Your mentor will be Furrytail. You will be known as Mintpaw."
"Snowpaw! Cloudpaw! Echopaw! Mintpaw!" the clan chanted.
Daisykit, Spottedkit, Foxkit, Stonekit, Alderkit and Patchkit had become apprenticed a few weeks before them, as they were older.
Brightcloud, Harenflight and Mossfire looked proud at receiving an apprentice.
"So, can we hang out with the older apprentices or what?" Echopaw looked expectantly at Brightcloud.
"Well, there is no harm…" Brightcloud looked at Harenflight then at Mossfire
"Wait!" called out Flowerstar, as the clan broke apart. They all looked at her. Flowerstar glanced at Sandfur. Sandfur meowed. "I have received news that Shimmerkit wants to be my apprentice and become a medicine cat." Everybody looked at Shimmerkit.
"Really?" Mintpaw meowed in disbelief.
Shimmerkit's meow was quiet. "Yes."
"Do you understand, if you are a medicine cat, you will not take a mate or have kits?" asked Sandfur. Shimmerkit nodded.
"From this moment on, you will be known as Shimmerpaw, and Sandfur's apprentice," announced Flowerstar. She gazed proudly at Shimmerkit. Cats broke up and went back to their duties.
"Now can we go with the other apprentices?" Echokit begged.
"Yes. Alderpaw, Patchpaw, Stonepaw, Foxpaw, Daisypaw, Spottedpaw!" Brightcloud called the other apprentices. "Can you show Mintpaw, Cloudpaw, Snowpaw and Echopaw the territory?" She asked politely, Snowpaw, Cloudpaw and Echopaw could tell she didn't really want to walk the whole way around the territory.
Snowpaw, Echopaw, Cloudpaw and Mintpaw padded slowly into the apprentices den, they all missed the nursery's milk scent. They were exhausted and had very little energy left, the walk around the territory had left them exhausted.
Chapter 11:
Snowpaw
Snowpaw woke up as the dawn light seeped through the apprentice's den.
"Cloudkit?" She called. "Echokit?"
"We aren't kits anymore, we're apprentices!" Echopaw looked up from her nest with a huge grin on her face.
"Battle practice sleepy-head!" Snowpaw got up and walked out of the den. She squinted as light shone in her eyes.
Cloudpaw shook her head. "Harenflight said he'd take me for hunting practice today and show me a bit of the territory, and take me for battle practice tomorrow."
"Oh, yeah right… Mine was hunting and battle practice." Echopaw got up and walked out of the den. Snowpaw bounded over to Mossfire who was sharing tongues with Brightcloud.
"You said battle practice!" Snowpaw informed her.
"I know. Let's go!" Mossfire's green eyes were brimming with enthusiasm. "But we might not be able to do all of it, we can't double ourselves." There was a teasing glint in her eyes yet Snowpaw realized with a jolt that she could. 'Does she know about my powers?' She almost asked the question out loud.
"Hello? Why are you staring into space?" Mossfire looked worried.
"Nothing, just-er I was thinking about Adderclaw's story he told me yesterday." She meowed quickly. Mossfire didn't seem to believe Snowpaw, but he let it slip.
"Anyways, lets go!" meowed Mossfire.
Snowpaw learnt more than she felt she should have. She was going to explode from all the battle techniques she knew now! She wondered if Cloudpaw and Echopaw felt the same way. They probably did… Snowpaw glanced up when she smelt Patchpaws scent. "Oh, hey!" she mewed casually. Inside her, she felt as if her heart would explode out of her chest. Why did she always feel like that around him?
"Hi! How was your practice today?" he asked.
"Pretty good . . . although I feel as if my paws will drop off!" Snowpaw looked straight at him.
"Oh, well, you can always go to your nest to rest! Ha, that rhymes," Patchpaw joked. Snowpaw grinned, her heart thumped in her chest. Suddenly she felt as if everything would be alright. She and Patchpaw would be mates, she would be friends with Cloudpaw and Echopaw, and grow into an elder with them. 'Everything is okay now too.' Snowpaw tried to convince herself 'Other than the part that I have this power that I can't tell him about.'
Chapter 12:
Cloudpaw
Cloudpaw padded confidently into camp. She had successfully caught a plump mouse! This wasn't her first time though. When she was three moons old, Cloudpaw had managed to catch a stray, skinny, rat. Although, it wasn't exactly a young, fast one like this mouse. Echopaw had caught a nice, juicy vole that they shared as well.
Echopaw was skilled in hunting, and Cloudpaw felt rather jealous she wasn't as good at hunting as her. Cloudpaw was okay at hunting though.
Cloudpaw had always felt more comfortable at fishing, not ground prey. Her speciality was swimming, not running. Cloudpaw remembered when she had once almost drowned, which had given her more confidence she must learn to swim, so she wouldn't ever drown. Moonclan did it all, they hunted every prey. Fish, vole, rabbit, starling, thrush, you name it! Everyone in Moonclan learned to climb trees, catch fish, run really fast, do ground hunting, even blending in with the shadows! Suddenly Stonepaw bounded into the camp just behind her.
"Great! You caught something as well!" he panted. Cloudpaw blinked in surprise. When she saw he had caught a huge pheasant in his jaws, Cloudpaw felt as if her mouse was a tiny pebble next to a boulder. Stonepaw waved his grey tail for her to follow. As Cloudpaw padded after him, he sat down next to the fresh-kill pile and put his piece of prey on the pile. Cloudpaw did the same. Stonepaw picked up a plump rabbit and took it towards her, and they shared the prey. When they finished, they shared tongues while talking. Suddenly he leaned closer to her and mumbled, "Cloudpaw . . . I really-"
"CLOUDPAW!" yowled Adderclaw.
"What is it? Do you have a flea?"Cloudpaw rolled her eyes. Stonepaw was about to tell her something really important to her future. She could feel it!
"WELL GUESS WHAT I FOUND IN MY NEST!" Adderclaw's furious voice yowled.
"Moss? Bracken? Tell me already!" Cloudpaw sighed. She got up and walked to the elder's den, casting an apologetic glance at Stonepaw.
"TAKE A LOOK AT THIS, THORNS! WHAT DO YOU THINK YOU'RE DOING?" Adderclaw glared at her.
"Sorry," she mumbled. Cloudpaw took the moss and then pulled out a thorn. Then another one.
Chapter 13:
Echopaw
Echokit's paws tingled with excitement, she was going out on a hunting patrol. Hunting was her specialty! She tasted the air. Echopaw could smell mouse! She heard some rustling from the bushes. She dropped to a hunter's crouch and stalked carefully towards it. She saw the mouse nibbling on a nut. Echopaw knew a mouse would feel her pawsteps before smelling her, so she put her paws down as gently as she would. Then, she leapt and landed on the mouse. She ended its life by giving it a neat nip on the back of it's neck.
"Well done!" meowed Brightcloud approvingly. "Don't over hunt though, we don't want all the prey to be gone!" she teased. "I think one more piece of prey should be enough. Echopaw thanked Starclan and buried her prey, looking for more. She tasted the air, and she smelt rabbit. She slid carefully among the bushes, pinpointing her prey. The rabbit was chewing on something. She crept forward, remembering everything. Echopaw pounced. She didn't even need to make it run into some cat. She landed right behind her prey, then killed the rabbit with a swift bite on the neck.
"Good job, I can tell you will turn out to be an amazing hunter! Now, bury your prey." Echopaw's eyes shone with pride.
Echopaw walked back into camp proudly, she had caught two mice, one starling, one rabbit and a thrush.
"Now that you have brought back your prey, show me your fighting skills. I know you will be an amazing warrior." Brightcloud waved her tail as a signal for Echopaw to show off her fighting skills. First, she did the most basic fighting move. Then did the more trickier battle move she had seen Stormpelt do.
"Wow, one of the trickier skills, you're a natural!" Echopaw dipped her head in embarrassment. It went on like this for a while. Finally, Brightcloud said that she could chat to some of the other apprentices. She went over to Snowpaw and Cloudpaw. They were having a conversation-no doubt-about their powers.
"Hey guys, do you think that our powers will go away after we have defeated whatever we need to defeat?" Echopaw asked. There was no answer to this question. They could be different in the way that they might keep their powers, or their powers could go away.
Chapter 14:
Snowpaw
Snowpaw decided to see what it was like to duplicate herself. She had done it before, of course, although she hadn't REALLY tried it. So Snowpaw concentrated. Hard. But of course, she did it somewhere nobody would see her do it. Soon, another duplicate of her was there. And she could control the body! It was hard to explain the feeling. If she wanted to switch bodies, she'd just switch! Snowpaw got used to the feeling of duplicating, and in a few minutes she was able to duplicate and remove her duplicates with ease. She wondered if her sisters were doing the same thing. Or maybe they were already natural with their powers. 'Maybe I should host a meeting with them to talk about life. Now that we are apprentices, we barely get time to talk to each other.' Snowpaw thought. She walked out of her hiding spot. She spotted Patchpaw talking to Daisypaw. Jealousy burned in Snowpaw's heart. Why was he talking to her, after what she did, he never talked to her! She walked towards him.
"Hi Patchpaw!" Snowpaw knew that even if she flirted with him, he still liked her. He even said so himself a couple of weeks ago! Patchpaw turned his head.
"Oh, hi Snowpaw! How are you?" He looked at her then asked, "Who do you think will be chosen for the gathering tonight?" Snowpaw frowned.
"I don't know, I just know the new apprentices will be chosen, since we have to be announced as apprentices!" Snowpaw felt her heart pound in her chest. Would the other clans be hostile?
Patchpaw looked surprised. "How did you know that?"
"Cloudpaw told me," mewed Snowpaw.
"How did Cloudpaw know that?"
Snowpaw thought for a moment, then meowed, "No idea. Maybe one of the older cats told her." Deep down inside, she actually knew. Cloudpaw probably read it from Flowerstar's mind…
Chapter 15:
Cloudpaw
Cloudpaw waited for Flowerstar's signal, she was soooooooooo excited! Her first gathering, being around all the cats in the clans-well, maybe not all. She had known that they were going-but she never knew that it would be THIS exciting! Even becoming an apprentice couldn't top this! Flowerstar signaled her clan to go with a flick of her tail. Everyone went to the small island, past the fallen tree. She carefully walked across the fallen tree, not wanting to make a bad impression on Stonepaw who was watching her in case she fell off the tree.
When she finally got to the other side, Stonepaw walked beside her, his pelt brushing hers. Was he doing that on purpose? Did he have something to say? Cloudpaw was aware of Spottedpaw glaring at them.
"Cloudpaw I really… I really like you… I'm not sure if you like me back, but I really like you…" Stonepaw blushed. Cloudpaw didn't know what to say, even though she dreamed of this happening, she couldn't say anything, all she did was open her mouth and gape.
"Yeah, same here." was the only thing she could say. Stonepaw smiled then said, "This is weird since we are only apprentices… But we can just wait till we are warriors…"
"Yeah, I agree. But still, I feel the same way about you…" Cloudpaw looked into his light blue eyes, warmth sparked through her. If only it could be like this forever…
"Hem hem…" Spottedpaw's voice came from behind them. Her eyes were filled with horror.
"Yes?" Cloudpaw asked.
"Why here? The leaders are starting." She mewed stiffly. Cloudpaw hadn't even realized. She had been too interested in her conversation with Stonepaw.
"Shadowclan has prey running very well, we are all healthy for leaf-bare. We welcome our newest apprentice, Lizardpaw!" Tigerstar of Shadowclan's mew rang out throughout the island.
"Lizardpaw! Lizardpaw! Lizardpaw!" The clans welcomed the apprentice, a grey tabby, whose head was dipped in embarrassment.
"Riverclan has had a fight with a fox, the fox went out of clan territory, and I hope it isn't coming back." Mistystar of Riverclan mewed. "Also, we have a new batch of litter born to Shinefur!"
"Windclan has plenty of prey during this leaf-fall." Harestar of Windclan dipped his head to Bramblestar.
"Thunderclan is thriving, but we found a badger who basically asked for its nose to be clawed off. We also have a new batch of litter born to Seedflower!" Bramblestar of Thunderclan nodded to Leafstar of Skyclan.
"Skyclan has found a hole with fox scent in it, we managed to drive it out today. Also we have two new warriors, Deertoe and Dappleheart."
"Deertoe, Dappleheart, Deertoe, Dappleheart, Deertoe, Dappleheart!" The clans cheered.
"We welcome four new apprentices, Echopaw, Cloudpaw, Mintpaw and Snowpaw! We also have a new medicine cat apprentice, Shimmerpaw!" Flowerstar mewed proudly.
"Echopaw! Cloudpaw! Mintpaw! Snowpaw! Shimmerpaw!" yowled the clans. The clans broke up and shared tongues, Patchpaw with Snowpaw, Echopaw with Alderpaw and Stonepaw with Cloudpaw. It seemed all were friends now.
Chapter 16:
Echopaw
Echopaw was exhausted from the gathering last night, all she wanted to do was curl up in her nest and sleep for a moon. So that's what she did, but of course not for a moon.
When she woke up, Cloudpaw, Snowpaw and Mintpaw were already up, grooming themselves.
"Good Morning guys!" mewed Mintpaw. They all murmured a response.
They shook their pelts, then got out. Cloupaw looked quite happy, actually she had been looking very happy since last night.
"Hey Cloudpaw, you look very happy. Did something happen?" Echopaw was curious.
"Yeah, Stonepaw said that he likes me!" Cloudpaw's hazel eyes were bright.
"Cool." Echopaw was happy for her sister, but they both got what they wanted, but she didn't. Alderpaw hadn't really done anything to say he liked her. She walked out of the den, she wanted to go out on a hunting patrol.
"Hey Firestorm. Can I go on a hunting patrol?'' She asked
"Go with Brightcloud, Thornberry, Mouseclaw, Eaglewing and Stormpelt." He instructed. She bounded off to meet her dad and the rest of the patrol.
"Let's go!" Echopaw called to the hunting patrol. The others followed quietly. Echopaw tasted the air, there was a faint smell of pheasant. She tracked it down. She signaled the rest of the patrol to crouch down. She set her paws lightly down on the forest floor. She crept forward carefully. Then… She pounced. She killed it with a swift bite on the neck.
"Wow! Great catch! It was bigger than you!"Stormpelt's praise warmed her to the tip of her ears.
She came back to camp with a successful amount of prey. Seven pieces all together. One vole, two mice, one rabbit, one pheasant and two starlings. Echopaw was startled when Alderpaw came bounding up to her.
"Wow! Great catch!" he meowed looking awed. Suddenly Foxpaw followed behind him.
"Ugh, why did you- oh. It's HER." Foxpaw glared at Echopaw.
"You don't have to follow me everywhere!" said Alderpaw through gritted teeth, looking irritated.
"Thanks. I bet you do really well with hunting too." Echopaw ignored Foxpaw, her cheeks burning.
"Never that well… want to hang out some time?" Alderpaw looked up at her expectantly and nervously.
"Of course!" mewed Echopaw. She tried to keep her cool but this is everything she had been waiting for!
"Ahem… are you two all right?" Stormpelt cleared his throat, clearly realizing that there was something going on between them.
"Oh! Yes, fine!" Alderpaw jumped. "Nice vole you got there…" Alderpaw searched for something to say. Echopaw purred.
Chapter 17:
Snowpaw
Snowpaw dreamed that she was a warrior, she was snuggled in Patchpaw's fur. They had wonderful kits that looked like mini-thems. She saw the little kits go to Patchpaw and meow at him. Their voices were so cute. She heard a screech. She looked at Patchpaw but he didn't move. The screech was real. Snowpaw jerked up. She smelt the strong reek of Windclan filled the air.
"IT'S AN ATTACK!" Snowpaw yowled. At once, the whole clan awoke, they were ready for a battle. Snowpaw ran outside her den, it looked like almost the whole clan was there to attack.
"Defend the weak!" Flowerstar yowled to the apprentices. Snowpaw-even though she didn't really like Adderclaw-ran to Adderclaw, so did Cloudpaw and Echopaw. They surrounded the elders and Brambleheart. (The queen.) A couple of Windclan apprentices raced towards the elders but Snowpaw, Cloudpaw and Echopaw swiped nastily and they were gone. Snowpaw ran away to a dark corner, then doubled herself. She went back into the fight, while her other self went to help the warriors.
"Snowpaw, go back to the apprentices!" yowled Mossfire. Snowpaw obeyed, and then removed her other self. The fighting lasted a long time. Snowpaw was sure that it wouldn't end now. Not after Windclan had destroyed almost half of the camp. The bramble bush that protected the elder's den had been derooted, everything that kept the elder's den had fallen. Plus, there were claw marks on the nursery wall. She looked at the camp which had once been so pretty, turned into a mess. She ran to Daisypaw, Spottedpaw and Foxpaw. (Even though she didn't like them) They needed her help driving off six pesky Windclan apprentices. They were trying to get to the nursery-in fact almost every cat was.
"THEY'RE GOING TO THE NURSERY, THEIR GOAL IS TO GET TO THE NURSERY! IT'S AGAINST THE CODE!" Snowpaw yowled to her clanmates.
Chapter 18:
Cloudpaw
Cloudpaw searched frantically for Stonepaw. He was nowhere to be seen in the mess that Windclan made. "Stonepaw!" She wailed. She looked around
A Windclan cat was circling around a kit, Starkit. Nobody was protecting him! She glared into his eye and forced him to retreat.
Suddenly she saw Alderpaw and Patchpaw being attacked by huge Windclan warriors! They were about the size of the pheasant that Echopaw caught! Cloudpaw knew Snowpaw and Echopaw would be heartbroken if they died. The warrior code said to only kill if for a good reason to, but Starkit had proven that Windclan wouldn't listen. She growled at the warriors attacking Alderpaw and Patchpaw and then swiped her front paw at them. Echopaw and Snowpaw joined in too. They growled, then swiped their front paw at the warrior's muzzle and repeated. Soon they drove the two warriors away. Cloudpaw looked around for Stonepaw again. There was no sign of him.
"Stonepaw!" She wailed. No cat answered, the only reply was the yowling of cats in pain or the victory of some cats. Cloudpaw ran to where she saw him last. He was there, guarding Brambleheart with his life, by himself. She joined him, slashing, sinking in her teeth in the warrior's flesh. Finally, the warrior turned and fled to the entrance.
"Are you okay?" asked Stonepaw anxiously.
"I should be the one asking that!" retorted Cloudpaw.
"We both should then, I was so worried that one of us wouldn't make it through! I thought that was going to be me." He admitted.
"I wonder why Windclan was so vicious tonight…" she wondered aloud.
"Maybe they wanted our territory?" Stonepaw suggested.
Suddenly there was a yowl, "Retreat, Windclan!"
Chapter 19:
Echopaw
Echopaw was terrified by the battle. She never knew it could be so vicious! She hurried towards her sister, Cloudpaw. She was standing next to Stonepaw chatting, 'I guess we should be chatting to cats we love…' Echopaw thought. She saw Birdflight, her mother, and Stormpelt, her father sitting somewhat nearby. She signaled her sisters with a flick of her tail for a family reunion. But before she could have one, Flowerstar held a clan meeting.
"All cats old enough to catch their own prey, join me underneath tall oak for a clan meeting!" Flowerstar yowled from tall oak. Every cat gathered there. "We need to get our wounds looked at, but after that, we need to make new warriors." She finished her sentence and then climbed down tall oak. The meeting split up and Foxpaw started to boast that she would become a warrior. Echopaw sighed. They had half a moon before they were warriors! Why couldn't they just be warriors now? 'What will be my warrior name? Echoleaf, Echoshade, Echoheart, Echomist, Echoflower?' Echopaw was looking forward to becoming a warrior. Everyone was going to the medicine cat den except for Brambleheart, Adderclaw and Creampelt. Echopaw reached the medicine cat den, then turned away, she could wait. Everyone came back to the meeting centre where Flowerstar addressed the clan.
"Foxpaw, Alderpaw, Patchpaw, Daisypaw, Spottedpaw and Stonepaw, come here." She looked at all the mentors. "Have they all trained hard enough to become a warrior?" The mentors nodded.
'I bet Foxpaw spends more time complaining than training'
"Then by the power of Starclan, Foxpaw, you will now be known as Foxface, Starclan honours your loyalty and courage and we welcome you as a full warrior of Moonclan. Alderpaw, you will now be known as Alderheart, Starclan honours your bravery and excellence and we welcome you as a full warrior of Moonclan. Patchpaw, you will now be known as Patchpelt, Starclan honours your loyalty and enthusiasm and we welcome you as a full warrior of Moonclan. Daisypaw, you will now be known as Daisyleaf, Starclan honours your loyalty and bravery and we welcome you as a full warrior of Moonclan. Spottedpaw, you will now be known as Spottedshade, Starclan honours your courage and thoughtfulness and we welcome you as a full warrior of Moonclan. Stonepaw, you will now be known as Stonefur, Starclan honours your bravery and courage and we welcome you as a full warrior of Moonclan." Flowerstar nodded at the newly made warriors, then climbed down the tree.
"Can you believe it, after all this time, I've been finally made a warrior!" Alderheart's mew took her by surprise.
"Yeah," She mewed, then she added, "But you better not brag about it!" She shot him a teasing smile, then walked towards the apprentice's den.
Chapter 20:
Snowpaw
Snowpaw glanced around her. There was nobody watching, so she quickly duplicated herself. When Windclan had attacked, they had ruined a bit of the camp, so she went off to fix some dens while her duplicate went over to help hunt. As she started off to fix some nests, Patchpelt bumped into her.
"AHHHH! Oh, it's just you. Hide me!" he yelped. Snowpaw was confused but she nudged him behind her into a dark corner in some ferns, and when she turned, she saw why. Daisyleaf came running.
"Where are you, Patchpelt?! I was going to confess something! Oh, hi. Would you mind telling me where Patchpelt is?" muttered Daisyleaf.
"Yes, I would," meowed Snowpaw stiffly. Daisyleaf strutted away. "She's gone," she whispered to Patchpelt.
"Oh, thanks. I thought I was crowfood! I swear, she thinks she can become mates with me, but I don't!" Patchpelt scowled. "Honestly, I'd much rather be mates with you!" Suddenly he blushed when he realized what he'd said. Snowpaw did the same. She and Patchpelt must blush the most out of Alderheart and Echopaw, Cloudpaw with Stonefur- maybe even combined.
"Oh, yeah…" Awkward silence filled up the air until finally, then Patchpelt mumbled, "I can't wait till you're a warrior!"
"Yes, that would be cool!" Snowpaw was glad that he changed the topic. Although Snowpaw couldn't ignore the fluttering in her heart, she meowed, "Want to get a lapwing from the fresh-kill pile, I know it's your favourite!"
"Sure, why not?" Suddenly he frowned. "Hey, I still don't know your favourite prey! I could catch it just for you now that I'm a warrior!"
Snowpaw shrugged. "No, it's ok! But, my favourite fresh-kill is squirrel!"
"Don't worry, I'll catch one for you, it'll be extra fat!"
"If you insist…" Snowpaw smirked.
Then, she felt flattered he would catch a squirrel for her, considering they were kind of hard to catch.
Chapter 21:
Cloudpaw
Cloudpaw opened her blurry hazel eyes. She nearly said "Good morning" to Stonefur but then remembered he was a warrior now. Cloudpaw sighed, she missed him a lot, it didn't feel the same now that they didn't sleep next to each other anymore. Suddenly, some cat walked in.
"Hey Cloudpaw, I got your favourite, fish!" Stonefur's kindness almost melted Cloudpaw's heart.
"Thanks! You didn't have to." meowed Cloudpaw warmly. She gave herself a quick groom, finished her fish and walked out of the den. She looked expectantly at Harenflight who was sharing tongues with his mate, Brightcloud.
"What are we doing today?" She asked enthusiastically.
"Battle practice because I saw you yesterday, you need to keep your balance." He waved his tail for her to follow him into the training hollow.
He taught Cloudpaw a few moves, then taught her more harder ones.
"You're doing pretty good!" Harenflight exclaimed. "Just a few more tweaks and you will become a perfect warrior." So after about an hour he said, "That's enough for today!"
Cloudpaw slowly walked back to camp and plopped down next to Stonefur with an exhausted sigh. "Ugh, I feel as if I've just gone for the longest run in the world!" She lay down with her chin on her paws.
Stonefur purred. "Well, it'll be worth it when you pass your warrior test!"
She shot up. "I completely forgot about that! I think we should be doing it like tomorrow! Ok, sorry I've got to remind Snowpaw and Echopaw!" When Stonefur nodded in understanding, she ran off to tell her sisters.
Cloudpaw anxiously lifted her nose to taste the air. There was a tang of mouse. She noticed a rustling under a bush too. She stalked it, placing her paws carefully. Then she leapt and bit the mouse's back with a clean nip.
"Good job!" Harenflight came out from some ferns. "Now, fishing!"
Cloudpaw loved fishing. So she easily plucked out three fish.
"Ok, so you will be doing the battle assessment with Snowpaw, Mintpaw and Echopaw!" Harenflight mewed.
Chapter 22:
Echopaw
Echosong anxiously paced the clearing. She had caught a squirrel, a starling and two fish, which would probably be a pass, but there was still battle training. She was good at battle training at least.
Snowpaw panted. So did Cloudpaw, Echopaw and Mintpaw. "Good job!" praised Harenflight, Brightcloud, Eaglewing and Mossfire. "I think you've done pretty well!"
Snowpaw, Echopaw, Mintpaw and Cloudpaw chatted nervously together on the way back to camp.
"Do you think I passed?" fretted Cloudpaw.
"Oh, you passed for sure. But I'm not sure about me…"
"Don't be silly, Echopaw! You were amazing!"
"Hmm… I don't know…" mumbled Snowpaw. They argued all the way back who might have passed. But they didn't have to worry.
"Let all cats gather beneath the tall oak tree for a clan meeting!" Flowerstar mew rang out through the camp.
Leaping down from the tree, she said, "Mintpaw, Echopaw, Cloudpaw and Snowpaw."
They all walked up to the tree. Flowerstar turned her head. "Have your apprentices trained hard to understand the ways of the Warrior Code?" she asked the mentors. They all nodded. Then she said, "Echopaw, come here." Echopaw looked both proud and terrified as Flowerstar said, "From this moment on, you will be known as Echosong. Starclan honours your loyalty and courage. We welcome you as a full warrior of Moonclan." Echosong looked at her parents, they were looking very, very proud.
"Cloudpaw. Come forward." Cloudpaw had the same determined look as she did when she was apprenticed. "Starclan honours you for your intelligence and loyalty. From this moment on, you will be known as Cloudmist. We welcome you as a full warrior of Moonclan." Cloudmist looked awed.
"Snowpaw, come forward." Snowpaw had a firm, strong expression, with her tail up in the air. "From this moment on, you will be known as Snowstorm. Starclan honours your bravery and quick thinking, and we welcome you as a full warrior of Moonclan."
"Mintpaw, come forward. From this moment on, you will be known as Mintleaf. Starclan honours you for your courage and bravery, and we welcome you as a full warrior of Moonclan."
"Echosong! Cloudmist! Snowstorm! Mintleaf!" the clan chanted. Echosong felt as if her heart would burst from pride and happiness. Especially when she saw Alderheart yowling the names. Their parents, Birdflight and Stormpelt had clear pride shining in their eyes. So did Shimmerpaw. Since medicine cat apprenticeship is longer than a normal apprenticeship, she'd have to wait a few more moons- or quarter moons because she was a good medicine cat.
Chapter 23:
Snowstorm
Snowstorm blinked open her blurry eyes. She stood up and started to pad out, when Patchpelts voice stopped her. "Where are you going?" he mumbled sleepily.
"Nowhere, go back to sleep." Snowstorm whispered, glancing around her. There were still many cats asleep, and she didn't want to wake them.
Her mate mumbled something else, and the steady breathing of his breath told her that he was asleep again. Snowstorm took a peek outside. It was still dark, but she saw that Rosefall was on duty. Walking quietly, she went out to the forest, deciding she would go hunting. As she tasted the air with her tongue, she suddenly tasted a strange scent. Cat scent mixed with ferns. Sniffing the air, then she walked ahead, wary of the danger she might be in. She couldn't put her paw on who the cat was though… She glanced around, no rustling to alert her of the cat. She walked forward. Then another step, her heart thumping in her chest, Snowstorm continued.
"Boo!" some cats jumped out from behind her. She spun around, Echosong and Cloudmist emerged. But, the smell wasn't their smell, it was different, their smell was with daisy flowers, this smell was with ferns.
"Why are you guys here?" She decided to ask
"We smelt something weird, cat smell so we are waiting for them to come so we can fight them! We've been waiting for hours though…"Cloudmist chatted excitedly about the mysterious smell.
"Well, they aren't coming, the smell is stale and I can tell this is from tonight." Snowstorm added. "You guys can hunt with me if you like!" Echosong and Cloudmistd nodded their heads, then went off to search for some prey. Snowstorm tasted the air, Leaf-bare was coming soon and the clan needed all they could get. She smelt thrush, she spotted it, she quietly slid among the bushes, then got ready to spring. She leaped and with a graceful bound, she had the thrush in her jaws. Her mouth watered. She was hungry but the clan must be fed first. She buried her prey, then walked off to find more.
Chapter 24:
Cloudmist
Cloudmist got up, it was slightly past dawn.
"Good morning!" She called in the warriors den to see if anyone was still in there.
"Good morning, I hope you slept well." Stonefur, her mate's mew replied. She had recently become mates with Stonefur, when they were apprentices, they couldn't become mates.
"I actually hunted during the night." Cloudmist replied, she was still wary and worried about last night. The strange cats kept appearing, she had chosen Echosong because she was awake last night. This was the third time in a row that the strange cats had come. She got out of her nest. She groomed herself, then walked out of the den, waving her tail for Stonefur to follow.
"Hi Firestorm, can I join a fishing patrol?" She asked. Fishing was her favourite.
"Yep, go with Mossfire, Birdwing and Stormpelt-" he was interrupted by Stonefur.
"Can I join too?" He asked.
"Yes, once you learn how to not talk over me." The grouchy deputy had been a deputy for a very long time. In fact, he was older than Flowerstar with all the lives she lost. Stonefur and Cloudmist walked side by side, their fur brushing, to the patrol.
"C'mon guys!" she called as she bounded out of the camp. She raced to the lake. There were lots of minnows- swimming. She backed away, there was a minnow alone. She swiped her paw at it, her claws carrying it to the ground. It flapped around. She jammed her paws down on it. She looked for more. She saw a group of minnows swimming. She signaled her patrol to pick one each. Then, she flicked her tail for them to grab one fish or two at the same time. There was a small splash, then, there was lots of slapping noises from the fishes that were slapping against the ground. Then, silence.
"Great job guys!" Cloudmist felt proud that her clanmates had caught so much, plus she had spotted the minnows!
Chapter 25:
Echosong
"All cats old enough to catch their own prey, join me underneath tall oak for a clan meeting." Flowerstar's voice rang across the clearing. Echosong and her sisters had a plan.
"I have heard from Sandfur that Shimmerpaw is now called Shimmerpelt." Flowerstar dipped her head respectfully at Shimmerpelt.
"Shimmerpelt, Shimmerpelt, Shimmerpelt!" The cats yowled.
"Do you understand, if you are a medicine cat, you will not take a mate or have kits?" Sandfur asked Starkit. He nodded. "From this moment on, you will be known as Starpaw, and Sandfur's apprentice." Flowerstar looked down proudly at Starpaw. The clan was about to break up, then Echosong called out;
"Wait! Cloudmist, Snowstorm and I have something to say." Flowerstar nodded her head interestedly. "We, well, we are… Okay, We have something to confess. You know the prophecy, I know who the prophecy cats are." Echosong held her breath.
"Who?" Flowerstar's eyes were glazed with interest.
"Us. We are the prophecy cats, Snowstorm can double herself, Cloudmist can control any cat's minds, and I can make things happen without physical contact." Echosong released her breath, not knowing that she had held it for so long.
"Prove it then!" Foxface called out from the clearing. Echosong looked at a twig on the floor and lifted it to Foxface's face. Then, Cloudmist controlled Spottedshade to dig a hole in the ground. Then, Snowstorm doubled herself. There was silence, then Alderheart called out;
"And you never told me?" Alderheart's mew was coated with sadness. The whole clan thought that they were going to be mates, yet she hadn't told him her deepest, darkest secret.
"Sorry." She mewed, then looking at Flowerstar, she asked; "What will be done now?"
"I don't know, wait for Starclan to send us a message." She looked up at the sky as if waiting for an answer. Then she murmured; "Leaf-bare is coming, we must be prepared." The clan broke up. Alderheart came rushing to her.
"You-you didn't tell me, why? I thought we…" He looked at her, depressed.
"I'm so sorry, we didn't even tell our family though. I would have told you if I could, but I couldn't." Echosong placed her tail on his shoulder. He sighed.
"How come you couldn't tell me?" He asked.
"Well, Roseheart, you know, the old medicine cat, anyways, she came to me in a dream to tell me that I had the powers, then she told me to tell no one but my sisters Cloudmist and Snowstorm. How could I reject Starclan?" Echosong put her muzzle in his brown, soft fur.
"Well, this complicates things a little, doesn't it?" he murmured at last. Echosong nodded. Then Alderheart opened his mouth as if he wanted to say something, but then, closed it. There was an awkward silence, then Echosong broke it.
"Do you want to grab a starling from the fresh-kill pile?" She asked. He shook his head, then rested his tail on her shoulder.
"Echosong, I've always wanted us to be more than friends. I just didn't know how to put it. I have always wondered if we would ever get together. Now I finally have the courage to ask how you feel." Alderheart looked into her eyes.
"I-I umm…. I feel the same way." She broke her gaze from Alderheart. "But don't you have some other cat padding after you? (*Cough, cough, Foxface*)" Echosong looked across the other side of camp, there sat Foxface gossiping with her sisters.
"She'll live. Right now, all I want to do is feel the wind on my fur-and, would you like to go hunting with me?" He asked.
"Yes, let's ask Firestorm about that."
Chapter 26:
Snowstorm
Snowstorm felt not at least a bit intimidated by Daisyleafs attempts to make her annoyed. In fact, Snowstorm still smirked when she thought of when Daisyleaf said a rather amusing comment about the 'dirtplace.' She would never forget that day. Today, it seemed as if Daisyleaf would try out a new tactic, by looking at Patchpelt in the eyes all the time. She might think that that would work. She looked for Patchpelt to warn him in case Daisyleaf started to come to talk to him. Her mate was sitting with Alderheart and Stonefur. They were sharing tongues. Then, Daisyleaf walked in the camp carrying two thrushes. She looked around, then bounded out of camp. 'I wonder what she is doing?' Snowstorm bounded after her, keeping her paws light on the ground. She moved swiftly through the bushes without a sound. Then, she stopped, she could hear voices, Foxface's, Daisyleaf's and Spottedshade's. Squinting between some leaves, she could watch the littermates.
"How can we make Stonefur notice me more?" Spottedshade was asking. "He even mated with that good-for-nothing 'cat!' I mean, what's so special about that cat?"
Daisyleaf snorted. "Oh, please. What's so good about Stonefur? Obviously, Patchpelt is more attractive, smart…" she sighed dreamily.
"Yeah, yeah. Keep thinking! If you had even a little bit of sense, you would think Alderheart is the most attractive, amazing, smart, incredible cat ever!" Foxface snapped. All three sisters glared at each other. "I know! We can make all three of those mouse-brains look SO stupid, nobody will like them! And that way, while we are doing that-" Foxface started. She was the smartest out of them three.
"But they have powers! Who would believe us to some powerful cats like them?" Spottedshade interrupted.
"Yeah, but Flowerstar wouldn't think that because they have powers, they are more useful! She didn't give them a special treatment or anything," countered Daisyleaf. "Anyway, continue." She nodded her head to Foxface.
"So, then while we do that, we can also make our crushes, our mates! We can also do other stuff." Snowstorm nearly ran up to them to claw off the nasty smirk on their faces.
"Meeting over. Let's get moving. After all, we are loyal." Foxface walked off back to camp.
'Loyal, huh?' thought Snowstorm. 'What loyal cat would plan against their own clanmates?' She ran off back to camp to tell her sisters, her mate, Stonefur and Alderheart what she had heard.
"Seriously, is that all they can do?" Echosong looked unimpressed.
Cloudmist snorted. "I know, right? You know what, we'll be ready anyways."
Chapter 27:
Cloudmist
Cloudmist woke up in the warrior's den, and with a jolt, she remembered what her sister had told her yesterday. She scowled and gave herself a quick wash. Glancing around her, it seemed Stonefur and her sisters were already outside. Padding outside to go on a patrol, she spotted her sisters. Just as Cloudmist was walking towards them, Flowerstar called a meeting.
"All cats old enough to catch their own prey, join here underneath tall oak for a clan meeting." Flowerstar had somehow managed to scramble up the tall oak's tallest branch. This meeting would be very important. "I need to hold an emergency gathering tomorrow. This is because when I went out for a night time walk last night, I smelt a cat. It was mixed with ferns. This was no clan cat scent. It was strange, not a rouge, not a loner, not a stray. The scent was unnatural, unknown, different and dirty. Do any of you know about this?"
Cloudmist was just as confused as the minnow she had once caught. Flapping on the rock, it was a good meal.
"Maybe the prophecy cats can tell us something about it!" Foxface called from the ground, "After all, they do have magical powers and all." She added. Flowerstar looked expectantly at Cloudmist, Echosong and Snowstorm. Suddenly, she remembered that night when she had gone out to discover a smell. Guilt washed through her as her sister started to speak.
"I-We don't know, all we know is that it has been there for a while, we had smelt it before, it always goes away in the morning." Echosong looked at her paws, she had forgotten to tell Flowerstar about it, just like Cloudmist. So had Snowstorm, from the look on her face.
"Why didn't you tell her earlier then?" Foxface turned to face her. "You're just being unloyal!" Jeered Foxface, seizing the moment.
"Stop it! We forgot to tell Flowerstar because we had been investigating for a while. We didn't have a chance to tell her, we were all so busy." Cloudmist glared at Foxface.
"It's strange that it only appeared when the prophecy cats revealed who they were." Foxface continued, ignoring Cloudmist. "Also, why didn't she tell you that she was one of the prophecy cats in the beginning when she found out?" Cloudmist was fuming.
"ENOUGH!" Flowerstar yowled as the clan started letting out cries of either protest or agreement. "No one will be accused of unloyalty. Now, who will come with me to talk to the clans?" She asked icily.
"Oh, me!" Daisyleaf immediately lifted her tail up in the air.
"Daisyleaf, Snowstorm, Echosong and Cloudmist." She scrambled down the tree and nodded to Firestorm. "Take care of the clan while I'm gone." She walked out of camp with the rest of the patrol following her eagerly but obediently. Daisyleaf looked especially smug, and Cloudmist didn't like that look on her face. She felt braver though when Stonefur whispered to her on the way out, "Be careful!" And even braver when Daisyleaf glared at them.
Chapter 28:
Echosong
Echosong kept her head down as they padded to Riverclan, the nearest. Suddenly Flowerstar stopped.
"What? Huh? Who? Where?" squealed Daisyleaf. She looked around frantically as if a fox was going to jump out at her any moment.
"We will wait for a patrol to come. How would we like it if a patrol came onto our territory without permission?" Flowerstar says in a matter-of-fact voice. Suddenly, there was a rustle in the reeds, then a Riverclan patrol came out.
"What do you want?" Reedwhisker growled.
"I would like to talk to Mistystar." Flowerstar told him politely. Reedwhisker opened his mouth like he was about to reject but said nothing. 'At least he has the common sense for that!' thought Echosong.
They walked back in the familiar territory that they had left. Echosong's legs felt like they were going to drop off! She stumbled into the camp. Alderheart greeted her with a quick lick on the shoulder. Nothing was official between them, but soon there would be. She snuggled into his thick fur coat. It was as soft as usual. They walked to the fresh-kill pile and grabbed a starling. They sat down and started to eat.
"So, uh, what happened?" He asked her.
"Nothing much, just clans being hostile about us waiting at the border." She snorted.
"Oh, well, the clans are always looking for signs of a battle, I'm just glad you didn't get hurt-and the patrol." He added sheepishly.
"Let all cats old enough to catch their own prey, join me here, underneath tall oak for a clan meeting." Flowerstar yowled to the cats in the clearing, they were crowding the patrol, asking questions.
"What did the other clans say?" Rosefall, a cream coloured she-cat called from the ground.
"Riverclan said that they would spread the message to Skyclan and Windclan. We took the message to Shadowclan, Thunderclan and Riverclan. A Riverclan patrol is going to come into camp so I expect you to be on your best behaviors." She eyed the kits warily.
"We will!" promised Waterkit. Echosong looked at Waterkit, wishing that she had kits of her own. She cuddled closer to Alderheart. He seemed to be thinking the same thing as she was. His eyes were clouding up with love. Then he blinked it away.
"Okay, so, I smell them. If they make any movement that will hurt any cat, claw them and leave them something to remember you." Flowerstar climbed off tall oak just in time because a few moments later, a Riverclan patrol arrived. She recognized Perchbird, a young grey tabby tom, Junipertail, a dark grey tom, Tumblefoot, a balck tom, Gingerfur, a ginger she-cat with black splodges and Acornfur, a brown she-cat from the gatherings. She was quite friendly with Gingerfur and Junipertail. She heard that they had become mates.
"Greetings." Flowerstar nodded her head. "What did they say?"
"Windclan said that they would come. Skyclan… Well, we had to do a little bit of convincing, then Leafstar said that Skyclan would come." Acornfur nodded her head respectfully to Flowerstar, trying to hide the excitement that was fizzing around her head. Even Echosong could feel that-she didn't even have a mind reading power like Jayfeather had when the dark forest arised!
"Okay, tomorrow then." Flowerstar signaled the patrol to go off, then nodded at Stonefur and Alderheart to send them to the border.
Chapter 29:
Snowstorm
Glancing up at the sky, it looked like it would rain later. The clouds had turned dark grey, so she wasn't sure if the Gathering would go on. She looked expectantly at Flowerstar's den, wondering if she would come out to tell them what would happen. Questions gathered in her head. Would this gathering be a short one or a long one, would they go next night or tonight? Turning around, Snowstorm realised that the rest of the clan was gathered outside the warriors den-or apprentice's den. She hurried to Patchpelt to ask if he knew what would happen.
"Well, it seems that we won't be going to the gathering tonight," Snowstorm heard Harenflight whisper to Brightcloud. Snowstorm couldn't help but to agree. She could smell the dampness in the air as if it were already raining. Rain was starting to fall heavily. 'So much for an exciting gathering!' Snowstorm thought grimly.
Splat, splat! The rain hit the rocks that circled around the hollow. She shuddered, thinking how bad it must be living in Windclan, there would be no trees to cover the cats that would be sitting around.
"Okay, Moonclan. I need… Snowstorm, Echosong, Cloudmist, Mouseclaw and Eaglewing to send a message to Windclan, Riverclan, Shadowclan, Skyclan and Thunderclan." announced Flowerstar. Mouseclaw's brown pelt was somehow sparkling with pride as Flowerstar called his name to run to the other clans. As quick as a flash, Snowstorm, Cloudmist and Echosong dashed off leaving Eaglewing and Mouseclaw at the hollow. Rain started to fall more heavily on top of Snowstorm. She skidded to a halt to catch her breath. Suddenly, a huge rain drop plopped onto her nose.
"YIKES!" Snowstorm let out a squeal as she leaped from the leaf litter that was now soggy from the rain.
"What's wrong?" Eaglewing exclaimed as he stopped beside her.
"Nothing, just got startled by a huge raindrop." she replied. Eaglewing rolled his eyes and muttered something that sounded suspiciously like "Mouse-brain!"
Cloudmist smirked. "A raindrop?" She stifled her purr of amusement.
Snowstorm huffed in embarrassment. She had never wanted to look this bad in front of the senior warriors.
"COME ON!!!" Echosong's voice broke out in the conversation. She waved her tail at Snowstorm. It was her place to split up with the rest of the patrol. Shadowclan is the closest, along with Riverclan!
Chapter 30:
Cloudmist
Cloudmist sneezed as she breathed in a raindrop. She coughed. Glaring at her clanmates, she muttered, "Ignore that!" But she purred when she saw Echosongs face, it was contorted in the middle of purring and frowning.
"Can we go back to camp now?" she asked. Mouseclaw glanced at Eaglewing and nodded.
"Sure. We can go back and you can have some rest and prey."
"Finally!" Cloudmist, Snowstorm and Echosong sighed in relief.
As soon as she bounded into camp, Stonefur skidded to a stop in front of her. "Finally! Guess what?" he exclaimed, looking horrified.
"What?" asked Cloudmist quizzically.
He opened his mouth, closed it, and opened it again. "Spottedshade, Foxface and Daisyleaf have been spreading rumors about you, Snowstorm and Echosong!"
She scowled. So it was true what Snowstorm had told them!
"Where are they right now?" she meowed, trying to be calm. As he nodded towards the sisters, Cloudmist flicked her tail in thanks and ran off towards them.
"What do you want?" asked Spottedshade, eyeing her disdainfully.
"Why-" she broke off when the three of the sisters started strutting away. She forced Spottedshade to listen by glaring at her in the eye.
Cloudmist started again. "Why are you spreading rumors about me and my littermates? We haven't done anything wrong!"
"Yes, you have! You stole our crushes, and now everybody thinks you're so important! You're NOT!" Spottedshade's mew cracked in the end. Suddenly Cloudmist felt a rush of sympathy for her. How must she feel? But her sympathy soon faded away.
"Well, even though you may not like us, that doesn't mean you have to be so rude! I'm sorry, but if you're so desperate to have mates, find your own ones!" she snapped, stalking away.
Her mate was already in their nest. "What happened?" he asked anxiously.
"Nothing. I just want to sleep," she replied, curling up in Stonefur's dark grey fur.
Chapter 31:
Echosong
Echosong took in a deep breath, then lifted a nearby branch with her mind. She stared at the branch, wondering how she came to have this power. Suddenly, she dropped it. Paws came running towards her. She spun around. She had gotten so used to hiding it from everyone that she forgot that they knew about her and her littermate's powers. She spotted Alderheart racing towards her, looking very excited.
"Flowerstar said that… Well since I don't have any romantic experience, that we could become mates without having to get into the awkward parts!" Alderheart looked at her as if he were trying to read her expression. "You don't like me… do you then?" He asked suddenly.
"No! I do, it's just I never knew you could do that!" Echosong touched her nose on his. His nose was cold. The leaf-bare wind was probably getting to all of Moonclan. Alderheart sighed. Then looked up at her. He pointed his tail to Foxface who was talking to Thornberry, a young tom.
"I heard that Echosong mewed that she never liked Alderheart, she was just cheating on him. She said that he was a stupid mouse-brain." Foxface was saying.
"But why would she do that? Doesn't Stonefur, Patchpelt and Alderheart like the sisters? Echosong is one of them. Plus, she wouldn't do that, she's got too much responsibility now that she has powers. Echosong wouldn't want to break any cat's heart." Thornberry looked at Leafshade, his littermate. She shrugged.
"Excuse me, I would never do such a thing, so keep your mouth shut!" Echosong stormed in.
"That's what you say. Maybe something inside tells you differently." Foxface smirked, then was caught off guard by Echosong.
"Who told you this then, yourself?" Echosong fumed.
"Uh… I heard it from Daisyleaf and Spottedshade." Foxface stood up to face her.
"Well, that's just gossip, what proof do you have?" Echosong challenged.
"The proof of how you look when Alderheart told you that he had asked Flowerstar to make you mates!" Foxface replied. She seemed to be enjoying making Echosong mad. Finally, Echosong felt as if she couldn't take it anymore. She stalked back to where she had left Alderheart. Then buried her nose into his soft, brown fur.
"Don't believe them, Alderheart!" She managed to meow finally. She was still angry.
"I won't now that I know… Sorry I doubted you for a second." Alderheart apologized. Echosong nodded.
Authors notes:
Reina: When I first suggested that we could write a story, my friends seemed unsure if they should or not. We finally came up on a decision. We would make a short story about characters. I chose the name Echosong because I like Echosong, also there was no better name that started with 'Echo' We bickered a little bit and I often thought of removing Snowstorm, Siena, because she didn't really type anything. But then I realized that if we fight, we will never get anything done. I deleted her and added her. The book 'The forest on fire' was the title because it sounded to me as if the fire would tear out the clans. The next book, 'The only clan,' has lots of differences to this book. rst of all, in that book, the danger starts to get
bigger.
Ahin: When Reina asked if we could make a story, I didn't think it was a good idea, lol. Because I thought we would bicker and argue about the story, but I didn't want to hurt Reina's feelings, so I gave it a go. I love the name Cloudmist, as I think 'Cloud' sounds happy, but dreamy. But when we made this fanfic about warriors, I knew it would end well! When we wrote our stories, one of our other friends, Siena was involved. But she thought she couldn't have any motivation, and asked to be separated. We did separate her, but only because she didn't play any part. Although, I think her character, Snowstorm is a good one. Anyways, I'm proud of the process we made, even though the chapters may have been a bit short! The name, 'Moonclan' was a hard decision though. I wasn't sure this was a good name, but in the end it sounded right. This book didn't have a very big plot, maybe next book? I hope me and Reina, (hopefully Siena as well) will make an enjoyable series. Hope you enjoyed the book!
PS: The series, 'Warriors' is not ours! Credit goes to Erin Hunter.
