Celestial
Hi guys, as many of my fics, I just had this idea and wanted to write about it. This was supposed to be a Dragon Quest IX au, but I don't know… I'll probably follow most of the story with some flavor of my own mix every now and then. Enjoy :3
Another thing is that I played the game in Spanish (It was the only way I could play it back then) So if I say names wrong, I'm sorry :3

We are the celestials. We are the guardians of the world and everyone who inhabit it. We help anyone in need even if they are no longer in the mortal realm. This has been our duty for millennia and we do it with pride

"… Daniel… Earth to Daniel, are you listening to me?" A tall bald winged man said to me
"Yeah, I'm sorry" I said
"Haha, quit daydreaming, we are almost done" He said in a friendly manner as we fly above the town
My name is Daniel and I'm a celestial. What are celestials? We are angels that protect the people of the world. We look like humans, but we have white wings on our back and a halo above our head. We are usually invisible to humans, we only appear to them on special occasions
"And that's all, got any questions?" He said and I shook my head "From today you will be the guardian angel of this town, Angel Fall. Hehe you are so young, is always weird give a kid a big job like this, but this is how it always been"
I'm a newborn soul, only a few days old. Celestials are created of the good will of the people in order to do specific tasks. We are born with all the knowledge and abilities to do our job. We only live to do it
"Relax kid, you are too tense" He said
"I'm not tense" I said
"Then you are just too serious" He said and strongly flapped his wings "That's all they guidance I can give you, is up to you to find the best way to protect your people"
"Yes, thank you" I said
"If you need anything else, you can always return to the Observatory" He said and I nod "Good luck guardian angel of Angel Fall, Daniel" He said and fly away into the sky
I descended into town and start watching the humans, a few kids walk past me, we look alike. I might be a few days old, but my body is the one of a 15 years old person. We celestials can change our body to anything we like, but we usually stay in the form we were born in
I look back at the kids, there were four of them and one of them was making another one cry
"Stop Cartman" A small brunette kid cry
"Shut up Clyde, this is what you get for not helping us" A big fat kid yelled
"But I can't give you the money, is all I have for the month. Why do you need it anyway?" The kid named Clyde said
"That's not of your business, just give it to me" The big kid said
"No. Help!" Clyde said and tried to run
The three kids chase the fourth one until they corner him by the small river in the middle of town, the small kid begged for mercy, but it was obvious it wasn't going to happen. I fly quickly at them and push the bullies into the river
"What did you do Clyde?" Cartman yelled angrily
"I didn't do anything" Clyde said "You just fell in the river"
"What?" Cartman said
"Maybe the guardian angel helped Clyde" One of the other kids said
"Why would the guardian angel help a small fry like him?" Cartman said
"Hey, where did Clyde go?" The last kid said
Clyde had escape in the middle of the chaos, I fly up and saw him enter a small house near the edge of the town. I follow him and enter his house, he was panting as he fell to the ground relieved
"I manage… to escape…" He said as he walked to a mattress on the floor
I look around to see that Clyde didn't have much, his house was tiny, he only had a mattress, a small table with a few chairs, a small drawer and in the middle of the room a hole where he can light fire to cook his food. He was definitely a poor kid, it makes me angry to think that the other kids wanted to steal his only money
"Did the guardian angel actually save me?" Clyde said as he lay on his 'bed' "Thank you guardian angel, thank you"
As he said it a small green crystal started forming in front of Clyde. When it was ready, I took it and put it in my pocket. This is Benevolessence, human gratitude given physical form, just like us, is invisible to mortals and is our duty to collect it. I look back at Clyde to see him falling sleep, he must be tired after running away, I leave the house silently to not disturb him
I spend the rest of the day helping the people in town, finding a grandma's lost ring, helping clean a barn and helping a ghost to find peace. I'm happy that I got a lot of Benevolessence crystals my first day on the job. Is nighttime and most of the people already went to bed
The town of Angel Fall was build at the bottom of a cliff with a big waterfall that give water to the town, I fly high and sit right at the edge and look below at how peaceful everything looked. I think I'm going to like my time here. I felt a strong pressure around me, we are being summon to the Observatory, I flap my wings and fly into the sky
After a few minutes I saw it, a great temple floating above the clouds, the Observatory, the base of the celestial and the place we are born. Today I leave this place believing I wasn't going to see it in a while, but here I am. After reaching the entrance, I heard a loud noise outside, I look back to see a shining golden train flying in the sky. That's the Starflight Express, a train that is supposed to take us to the realm of the all mighty or heaven, but apparently it has never stop here before
On top of the Observatory there is Yggdrasil, the world tree, it lives of Benevolessence and when it grows big and healthy enough, is supposed to give fruits that will shower the world eliminating all evil. When it happens, the Starflight Express will stop at the Observatory and will take us to heaven, that's why we protect people and collect Benevolessence. If you ask me, it sounds a little bit selfish
We were summoned today offer our Benevolessence to Yggdrasil, because apparently is close to give fruit. Any day now our holy duty will be complete, I wonder what will happen to me, I just born, this will be the first time I'll give the crystals to Yggdrasil. It is ok for me to board the Express?
I wait in line for my turn, there are a lot of celestials right now, is this all of us? I finally reach the tree, I took out the few small crystals I had and they start shining and turn into a green mist that was later absorbed by Yggdrasil. I started walking away when the great tree behind me start emitting a strong glow. We all looked back in awe as the branches sparkled in the night, slowly golden fruit started to grow on Yggdrasil, there were seven in total. Are they going to fall? Do we need to harvest them? Just as this was happening the sound of the Starflight Express came closer, we all looked to the side to see the train stop right beside the Observatory, everything was happening just as our duty said
Everyone started celebrating, some celestials have been doing this for thousands or millions of years, they'll finally be able to rest, I was happy, but once again I asked if was worthy of this
But we didn't have time for that… I happened out of nowhere, a minute after the Express stopped a huge beam of light hit the Observatory from below, the ground shook as parts of the observatory fell from the sky, some of the celestials fall too as we suddenly lost the ability to fly. I held to the floor as the other celestials scream in horror as the beam hit Yggdrasil and the Express. The Express and its wagons fell as the fruits of Yggdrasil. What was happening? Are we being attacked? What's going to happen now?
The floor beneath me start to crack, sensing the danger the celestial who helped me this morning jumped to get me out of the way, but it was too late. The beam of light destroyed the floor beneath me hitting me point blank. I fell to the world below at great speed, I was in so much pain I could barely keep myself awake, the only thing I saw before passing out was the Observatory crumbling away

I slowly open my eyes, there was a wooden ceiling above me, where am I? I tried to sit down, but my body was too tired. What…? What happened to everyone else? What happened to me? I fell from the Observatory I should be dead. I heard something crashing beside me. I look to see a brunette kid with a shocked expression on his face… wait… is he…?
"Oh, thank god you wake up" He said running at me "Are you ok? I was so worried you wouldn't wake up"
He is Clyde, the kid I helped yesterday, he saved me…? Wait. HE CAN SEE ME!?
"So, are you ok? Can you answer? You don't have brain damage, do you?" He said panicking
I muster the strength to sit down and nod, I hope that's the answer he is looking for
"You are ok?" He said and I nod again "I see, that's great. You were out for a week"
A week!? What happened? Are the others ok? What happened to Yggdrasil's fruit and the Express? I feel so confused… and I feel something else… There was a strange feeling in my abdomen and suddenly it made a strong noise
"Oh, are you hungry? You should be, you haven't eaten anything since you arrived" Clyde said
I'm hungry? Now that I'm think about it, I'm also tired. That's impossible, we celestials might look mortal, but we aren't, we don't have the need to eat or rest
"Don't worry, I'll make something for us to eat, I just need to go buy some stuff. I'll be right back" Clyde said and ran off the house
He is a nice kid, I lay down to sleep until he comes back, but a surge of panic flared within me as my back hit the bed. I sat instantly and easily took my shirt off, too easily. I touch my back and I couldn't sense anything, they were gone, my wings disappeared. I look above my head and my halo was nowhere to be seen
A new discovery again, I could feel, if I touch something I feel it, I started to feel cold because I didn't have my shirt. Also, I could only see what my eyes saw, I could only hear what my ears heard. This was so surreal, as a celestial our body was ethereal, we only feel what we wanted to feel, we only feel pain if someone actively try to hurt us. I touch my chest and I could feel a heartbeat, I took a deep breath and I could feel the air in my lungs. I became a mortal, I became a human…wow…
"Hey! I'm back" Clyde entered the house "…What are you doing?"
This feeling thing is so cool, I'm having so much fun. I touch a blanket on the mattress, and it was very soft, then I touch my chest and it was rougher but still very soft. I look at Clyde and run at him
"Eh…? What…?" He said
I touch Clyde's face, it was even rougher than me but still soft. He starts to get warmer and his face turn red. Why was that? I look at Clyde's hands, they look different, I touch them and this was the roughest thing I touch so far. His hands have scars of all sizes, burn marks and calluses. He must work very hard. I let him go and grab back my shirt
"What was that?" Clyde asked me and I shook my head, I got too excited "Oh…ok. I… I'm going to make vegetable soup, is that ok?" I nod "Is going to take a moment, you can go back to sleep in the meantime" He said as he waddled nervously through the house, I'm sorry Clyde
I lay down in the mattress once again. Why did I become human? Was it because of that beam of light? There is so much I don't know…
"Hey, are you still awake?" Clyde said as he cut the vegetables "I realize I haven't introduced myself. I had you here for so long that I forgot"
Oh, I guess, although I already know your name
"My name is Clyde Donovan" He says smiling "What's yours?"
Oh yeah, my name. All the celestials know each other since the beginning, so I never had this conversation before…
"Daniel" I said
"Daniel? Is a cool name" He said
"Thanks, yours too"
"Hehe, thanks. Hey, I can I call you Danny?"
"Uh? Why?"
"Is cuter" He said smiling
"Oh… sure" I said and I started to feel warmer, is this what Clyde felt before?
"Great, nice to meet you Danny"
"Nice to meet you too Clyde"

Hi guys, did you like the chapter? Most of it was exposition to ground the world. The MC is my new kid, if you read my other works you should be able to notice it very quickly (I hope) I debate about making Danny a silent protagonist and ultimately I decide against it, he'll still be calm and shy, this is because is really hard to write silent protagonist, I want a break of it for a while
