"We're here."
Sam Manson, now nineteen, stepped out of the specter speeder onto cold, hard concrete. Her solid black combat boots scraped against the street as she moved to shut the door behind her. She'd opted to wear black pants to keep out the chill, her outfit complete with a purple coat that hung open, revealing her black and silver DP insignia t-shirt. The metal of her earpiece was cold against her cheek. Her shoulders stood upright, rigid, and tense. Her eyes narrowed as they scanned the area.
Tucker Foley, no longer the lanky teen he once was, got out silently behind her, towering over her about a foot. Face grim, he held a device in one hand. He never went without his PDA, or his multicolored beret. His beige jacket battled the wind and he wore jeans that had begun to fade. He scratched at the facial hair growing on his chin. Long ago his friends had given him much grief for it, and he was on the receiving end of a lot of jokes regarding his masculinity. As he grew into it however, they had to admit it suited his features rather well.
The frigid air whipped around Sam's mid-length ebony hair. She ignored the cold, even as each breath came out in short, white misty puffs. Tucker shuddered beside her before zipping his jacket closed.
She trudged up the path leading to her destination, not bothering to look at the scenery around her. She couldn't remember the last time she took a stroll just to relax. Hell, she couldn't remember the last time she felt relaxed. Sam absentmindedly twisted the ring on her finger, a habit she had developed just recently. It was a reminder, she had something to fight for.
The concrete led to a narrow dirt path and Sam kept going, leading the way. The building came into view quickly, standing tall in the middle of the island in San Francisco Bay. It held an aura of protection and justice. For a moment, Sam felt bitter.
"Do you think they're here?" Tucker asked behind her, the dirt path no longer wide enough for them to walk side by side. He was pushing buttons and sliding his finger rapidly across his PDA, no doubt making sure they kept on schedule. Their time here was strictly limited.
"They should be." She told him curtly although there wasn't really any need to. They had done their research. They both knew there wasn't any meta crime activity going on at the moment.
The wind picked up, bringing with it an icy chill, and Sam suppressed a shiver. The sky was beginning to lighten, and it held a slightly greenish tint. To the untrained eye it would be quickly dismissed, but Sam and Tucker knew better. Pariah's power was growing.
"Come on." She told him, picking up her pace. Tucker followed closely behind. Her hands itched towards the Thermos on her belt, scratched and dented from use. The other flitted against her ecto-gun, and she drew comfort from it as it thrummed with energy under her fingertips. She never went anywhere without it.
Sam didn't hesitate up the steps leading to the door, giving it three swift raps with her knuckles before retracting her hands near her belt. She steeled her features, in preparation. Tucker planted his feet beside her, his warm presence reassuring. After everything they had been through together, Sam always knew she could depend on Tucker to always be by her side.
It was silent, and Sam considered knocking again before she heard the sound of a deactivating alarm. Several buttons were pushed and clicks were made when the door finally opened, domino mask meeting her steady gaze. He looked disheveled and with hair in slight disarray but no less alert. He stood casually with raised brows, the only indication of his surprise. It was obvious he wasn't expecting them, she wondered if anyone ever came to visit. Probably not, especially not at 6 o'clock in the morning.
"Hello Robin. My name is Sam Manson, and this is Tucker Foley, Mayor of Amity Park, Illinois."
Sam wasn't ever really one for pleasantries, but they needed to give a good, friendly first impression. She stuck her hand out, offering a peaceful exchange and Robin returned the gesture, eyebrows still raised.
"Pleasure to meet you Sam, Mayor. Is there anything that my team and I can do for you?" He asked voice still slightly gruff from sleep, with both curiosity and concern lining his features and Sam nodded, ignoring the sudden pang in her chest at the familiarity of him. An eager hero ready to serve and protect. He didn't need to voice the question if they had scheduled an appointment with the team to come meet with everyone. They both knew they hadn't.
"Actually, there is. We need your help, and we're running out of time." She told him, violet eyes gazing into his mask. Robin's eyes narrowed with the slight wrinkling of his mask and he turned sideways, opening the door wider for both of them to walk into Titan's Tower.
"We'll help in any way that we can." He told her and Sam nearly grimaced at the conviction in his voice, already promising to help without any information. Sometimes she thought heroes were too trusting. She strode into their common room and Tucker followed, stopping short at the sheer amount of modern technology and the huge computer screen taking up nearly an entire wall. He was a kid in a candy store, and probably would have groveled if the circumstance wasn't so grave.
"What can we do for you?" Robin asked after closing the door, and walked towards them with confident strides. Their presence had gained the attention of the other Titans, and they all began to gather in the common room. It must not have been often for them to receive visitors, especially so early. Sam stole glances at each Titan. They all feigned indifference but she could see they were all tense, ready for battle at a moment's notice. Raven's glittery black power was already swirling quietly at her fingertips. One of Robin's gloved hands never left his utility belt. Sam exchanged a glance with Tucker before stepping forward, resisting the urge to fidget her hands towards her gear.
"We need your help to find someone, as soon as possible. The world depends on it."
She knew she sounded ridiculous, a part of her didn't want to believe it herself. But they couldn't do this without supernatural intervention, they needed heroes. The Justice League hadn't responded to their request for help yet but they couldn't wait. She knew that what she was about to ask them was a huge commitment for them, but she was also aware of how much time had passed on their trip to Titan's Tower.
Robin started, perplexed yet alert, and Sam waited. The tension was even more apparent in the silence. She couldn't blame him for being confused, the world didn't seem like it was in imminent danger, and the general public wasn't aware of what was going on. That was the extent of Pariah's power, fueling into the blockade to shield Amity Park from the rest of the world.
Sam took a deep breath.
"I know this sounds crazy, but there's another dimension that's tied to our world. It's like two sides of a coin. It's impossible to have one without the other." All eyes were on her and she stood her ground, piercing her gaze at Robin who had yet to react.
"And what is this other dimension?" One of the other Titans asked, a baritone voice booming across the room, and Sam turned to see him taking a step closer to her. He had her by about two feet, and she had to look up to meet his eyes. His darker skin greatly contrasted with the blue and white metals making up parts of his body. Cyborg. She knew who he was, she knew who all of them were. She made sure of what she was up against before she came. However she was relieved to see that none had immediately kicked her out of the Tower and checked her and Tucker into an insane asylum.
"The Ghost Zone." Tucker told them all before she got a chance to reply, and everyone swiveled their attention to him. They all met him with incredulous stares. Tucker cleared his throat before continuing,
"There's a lot to explain, but we need to get back to our hometown. Everyone there is in danger. We're asking for help because we can't do this alone anymore."
Sam could see the questions swimming through Robin's mind, sending unreadable expressions to his team only they could understand. They didn't have time to explain everything like she wanted to at the moment, but it couldn't be helped. Hopefully they would understand that.
"When do you need to be back?" He then asked, looking at her.
"As soon as possible."
He nodded once, pensively, before looking back to his team. Sam held her breath.
"Before you agree to help you need to know that Amity Park is a battle ground. We're fighting against ghosts. We have no idea how long it will take before we can end the fighting, but Amity Park won't survive much longer against the blockade."
Everyone had paused to regard her fully. Beast Boy's eyes nearly bugged from his head.
"Why the heck have we not heard about this yet?" Beast Boy asked, just as bewildered as the others. The only members who remained unsurprised were Robin and Raven.
Tucker stepped forward, "The Ghost King has isolated Amity Park in the Ghost Zone. To the public, Amity has never existed. Amity Park is a hub for ghost activity and we're the only city that has laws and regulations in place to protect its citizens against ghosts. We're the only city with an arsenal specifically designed to fight against them."
Sam pulled her ecto-gun from its holster, holding it out for everyone to see.
Tucker paused as the team took in the information, wanting them to fully understand the gravity of their situation.
"We're the only resistance and we're barely hanging on. If the Ghost King takes over Amity Park then there is no one else equipped to fight against ghosts."
"The Justice League hasn't responded to our beacon for help," Sam added, "We don't even know if they received our request. It was a great risk to come here and our team is vulnerable."
Silence. It grew and Sam could feel the tension in the air. At least they had gotten through everything that needed to be said. Now, they had all the pieces and could really decide if they wanted to help.
"Dude," Beast Boy broke the silence and everyone looked to him, "That's pretty heavy."
There was a pregnant pause and Sam wondered if anyone could hear her rapid heartbeat.
"Let's do it."
There was a chorus of agreement and Sam finally released the breath she was holding when Robin gave them all a smirk. Cyborg had given Beast Boy a high-five while Starfire clapped happily in the air.
"Yes, let us all help save the Park of Amity!"
Sam stared in disbelief. They had just pretty much said that Amity was in dire need of assistance and struggling to survive, and they were cheering? Were they all so out of touch with the consequences of war that they were genuinely looking forward to fighting against ghosts? Sam was disgusted but she hid it well behind an expression of relief and appreciation. Tucker must have noticed her anger because he glanced her way briefly, shooting her a glare but she ignored it. She had to remember the Titan's had been living a life of (relative) normalcy the past year, and had very little action from the newspaper reports in Jump. They were all probably itching to fight. On the other hand there wasn't a night that went by that Sam got more than 3-4 hours of sleep from going over maps, battle strategies, and scheduling patrols.
"We have a lot of questions that need to be answered, but we'll do what we can." Robin said allowed both her and Tucker. Sam nodded once, she had expected nothing less. She fully understood what her and Tucker were asking of them, even if some of them didn't, but they would. Their help was only a minor victory in a much bigger war.
"Fortunately crime rates have been low lately in Jump City and not much has been going on. Cyborg, you'll have to get the T-ship ready. I'll call Titan's East and schedule their arrival here as soon as possible. Raven, secure the Tower."
The Titan's leader continued to diligently order his team, and Cyborg made quick work at the controls in the common room, Tucker eagerly watching. Sam observed them all, allowing herself to indulge in her feeling of relief for the barest of moments. Of course they would help, it was their job. It's what they were trained to do. Sam was counting on this. They all were.
"The person that you're looking for must be important." The girl beside him deadpanned and Sam nodded, taking in her dark blue shadowed appearance. Her shoulders were hunched, and her fingers had limbered inside the folds of her cloak. Raven was her name, an empath. She was skeptical and maybe a little apprehensive - Sam could understand that.
"Yes. We're expecting a big invasion soon. We should be able to hold them off, keep them distracted for now while we search."
"And this person will be able to change the course of the war?" She inquired further.
"Yes. We're losing ground and getting desperate. We need all the help we can get or thousands of people will die, if not more."
"So that's where we come in." Raven deadpanned. To the untrained eye one would think that Raven thought of her as an annoyance, but Sam understood that Raven wasn't one for small talk. She didn't beat around the bush and got straight to the point, Sam appreciated that.
Sam gave an affirmative nod, before glancing at the watch on her wrist. Her eyes widened and she let out a stream of curse words. She missed the way Beast Boy's mouth hung open and Starfire inquiring the meaning of the words she had just unleashed.
Then the piercing alarm erupted in Tucker's hand, coming from the PDA. The Titans tensed and Tucker's eyes met hers, almost panicked.
"We're out of time. Another surprise attack. We need to move." Tucker ordered but Sam was already moving towards the door, ready to fly the speeder. It only took seconds for Tucker to order the speeder to meet them at the entrance of the Tower with his PDA.
"Why are they attacking now?" Cyborg asked, following closely behind Tucker. The others were already in motion, readying the T-Ship.
"They must've realized that we're not in Amity anymore."
"Who?" Someone had asked, but Sam wasn't paying attention to them anymore. She was directing the Speeder to the front door from her watch, before putting a hand to her earpiece. The voice in her ear was already shouting at her to get back. Her mind was racing. They should have had more time. At least 2 days, they had prepared an extra day to convince the Titan's to come with them if they needed it. They had taken careful steps to ensure Pariah wouldn't notice their absence.
"Tucker, send Robin the coordinates." Sam ordered Tucker who was already working at a rapid pace on his device. He was probably working on keeping the ghost shields up back home. There was no way they could win against Pariah without the ghost shields. She turned her focus on Robin, who was waiting for her.
"Stay close, the speeder has a ghost shield that will cover your ship. They'll try and prevent us from getting in the city. Here, take this." She handed over Tucker's glowing green and silver earpiece which Robin accepted without hesitation.
Sam's eyes lit up when the speeder came into view and she rushed out the door, sparing a glance backwards to see the Titans making their way up towards the roof where their T-Ship stood. Her eyes met Robin's once more as he gave her a look she couldn't interpret.
"I promise I'll answer every question from all of you, but right now we need to get back to Amity as fast as we can. If they take out our base then it's all over." She couldn't help the desperation and fear that had leaked through her voice. Robin nodded gravely, then turned, before stopping short.
"Wait, Sam. The person that you're looking for, who is it?"
Sam swallowed down the sudden lump that formed in the back of her throat. She cleared it and answered without looking at him.
"His name is Danny. Danny Phantom."
She turned to run, Tucker close behind. The wind now hit her full force, bringing with it a sense of foreboding. Once again the world was in danger, now more than ever, and this time Sam couldn't help but feel the weight of it straining on her shoulders.
Danny where are you?
