Barry checked his watch while sipping his wine and waiting for his girlfriend.
It was a silent day, no metahuman sights, so they decided to do something normal, like a dinner date. Barry made a reservation for a fancy restaurant and now he was waiting for Caitlin to show up.
And she did.
When Barry saw her walking towards him, he used all his strength to stay still. Because all he wanted to do at that moment was to forget about the date night, flash her to home and take her to bed.
Because she looked absolutely stunning.
She was wearing a strapless black dress that ended a little above her knees. Her rose gold curls were hanging smoothly on her shoulders, and her snowflake necklace was just emphasizing her cleavage.
Yeah, the night would be difficult.
When she arrived the table, Barry got up and put a quick kiss on her lips. She smiled.
"Sorry, I'm late."
"It's OK," replied Barry, still having a hard time to get his mind to work properly.
They sat down and looked at the menu. Caitlin sighed happily.
"It's so nice to do something like a normal couple," she said. "I love our jobs, I really do, but sometimes I just need some peace and quiet."
Barry smiled and took her hand on the table. "I know," he said. "And I promise, we will have these nights more often, I will do my best. Besides," he added, raising one brow. "There are some extra advantages for me in these date nights. I love your dress."
Caitlin blushed under Barry's hungry looks. "Barry…"
Barry laughed. "OK, OK, I'll play nice. Let's eat our meal."
The next hour was eventless, they ate their meal, chatting idlely and enjoying the presence of each other. While they were ordering desserts, Barry smiled to Caitlin playfully.
"Look at that, we made it to the dessert."
At that moment, they heard crashes and screams coming from the front door of the restaurant.
Caitlin sighed. "And, you just had to jinx it, hadn't you?"
Suddenly, bullets were flying over their heads. And before Barry even had time to react, Caitlin screamed and fell.
Time just stopped.
Everything stopped, while Barry was looking at her girlfriend on the ground, blood all over her shoulder.
His head started pounding, there was just one thought in his mind. "No… Not her…"
He came to his senses quickly. He put Caitlin into his arms and flashed her to the Star Labs without caring is anybody could see him.
Only Caitlin mattered at that moment.
Luckily, Cisco was there. Barry told him what happened while taking Caitlin to the medbay and putting her on the gurney. Cisco ushered to her and pushed Barry out. "Go!" he said. When he saw Barry's reluctance, he screamed. "Go! I'll take care of her!"
It turned out that the attackers were just the former employers of some businessman eating dinner with his family in that restaurant, and they wanted revenge because they had been fired unfairly. Barry cursed his luck while handing them over to Joe and returned to Star Labs impatiently.
When he entered the medbay, Caitlin was awake and Cisco was putting a bandage over her shoulder. He took a deep breath of relief. Cisco finished at that moment and turned to him.
"Don't worry," he said, patting Barry's shoulder. "The bullet just grazed. She'll be OK."
Then, he mumbled something about having stuff to do and left Barry and Caitlin alone.
Caitlin smiled sheepishly. "Sorry for scaring you."
Barry approached and held her hand. "That is a vast understatement. You were almost giving me a heart attack, Cait."
Caitlin squeezed his hand. "Hey, I'm OK."
"Yeah, for today," retorted Barry. "What about next time? What will happen when you are in danger next time?"
"Well, danger is kind of in the job description when you decided to be the personal phsychian slash girlfriend of a super hero," said Caitlin, trying to lighten the mood.
But unfortunately, it didn't work.
"It's just…" Barry sighed. "I feel so selfish to keep you with me. You can have a normal life Cait, a safe life."
Caitlin put her hand on his cheek and forced him to look at her.
"Look Barry, you can't just make that decision for me," she said. "I decided to live this life, long before we started dating. I don't want some normal, safe life, I love being here. We are putting some good to the world here, and I love being a part of it. You can't just take it away from me, because in fact, that would be selfish."
"I can't watch you getting hurt," whispered Barry. "I can't take it Caitlin. I can't move on with my life if something bad happens to you."
"Nothing bad will happen to me," said Caitlin in a reassuring voice.
"How can you be so sure?" asked Barry desperately. "I mean, look at us! We can't even go on a date without you getting shot!"
"Barry, you are the one risking his life everyday out there, not me," said Caitlin. "I'm the one waiting here, fearing every second of every day that something bad can happen to you."
Barry caved a little. "Oh…"
"Yeah…" said Caitlin. "This constant fear of losing each other is a part of our relationship. It is what makes us, us."
Barry sighed, closing his eyes. Then he opened them and looked at Caitlin's eyes, smiled. "Always knowing what to say, Caitlin Snow, that's what makes you, you," he said. Then, he rested his forehead on hers. "Sorry for freaking out."
Caitlin put her arms around his neck.
"It's OK," she murmured. "Do you want to continue our date at home?"
Barry smirked. "Actually, I'm thinking about continuing it in the bedroom. Preferably without our clothes."
Before Caitlin could say anything, they heard Cisco's voice through the coms.
"Eww… Guys, can you please go home before doing something that will scar me for life?"
