The dark room was lit by a milisecond of lightning. A few seconds later you could hear the rumble of the thunder. The sound shook the building but the one inside was deaf to the things that were happening outside his window. It was silent other than the sobs that could be heard throughout the apartment.

"Inuyasha."

Pain tore at his heart and he yelled out. His heart was breaking and he tried his best to mask the pain but doing a poor job at holding back.

His mind was filled with the scenes of that day. She was gone. How could she leave him? Why now? His head was pounding from the constant flow of tears running down his face. Cracks in the floor from where he had beat his fist in frustration. He couldn't save her. She was just here and now she wasn't.

After a few moments, he willed himself to kneel by the commode. After a few more moments, he stood. He was adjacent to the mirror but he refused to look at it. He didn't want to be reminded of the torment he was going though. He didn't want to think about his blood shot eyes... Blood. The ground was covered. She was just here but now she wasn't.

Continuing the protest of his reflection, he walked to the bed and slid in. It was cold. He rubbed the side where she slept. It still smelled like her. Her long black hair on the pillow next to him, He pulled the hair and held it in his claws and tried to fight back the new strain of the tears currently leaking from his eyes. His gold lit up at another flash of lightening.

Remembering her voice. "Are you okay?"

"No." He choked aloud.

"What's wrong?" He pictured her face in concern.

"Come back... please let this be a dream."

"I'm sorry." She sorrowfully smiled.

"C-Come... come back." He winced at the thought.

"I'll miss you." She began to reach for him.

"Don't do this." He reached for her.

"I love you." She disappeared.

"KAGOME!"

He let out a roar, almost sounding like a wounded animal. One in pain, as if it was continuously being stabbed. The moans and groans continued until he unwillingly fell asleep. But sleep left him after a few hours, and he looked to her side. It seemed like a few minutes, but hours had passed. It was time for him to get up. It was time for the funeral.

--

He went to his closet and pulled out a black suit, refusing to look to her side of the closet. Shower, teeth, One sleeve at a time, one leg at a time. He pulled his long silver hair back and tied it in a low ponytail. He splashed some water on his face, hating his reflection, and grabbed his keys.

He walked out to his car and began to drive. He took the long way to get to the home. Pretending that the longer the drive, the longer it would be to say goodbye. He pulled up to the home and waited. He gripped the steering wheel, his knuckles turning white, denting the wheel in the process. There was a knock on the window. There, Miroku stood giving his friend a semi-comforting smile, though pain was also there. Inuyasha tried his best not to cry and succeeded in holding back his tears. Miroku opened the door to the car and sat in the front seat. His hands shaking a bit. Him, unsure of how to comfort his best friend in the moment.

"Miroku, please don't say anything. Not now."

Miroku nodded and gave Inuyasha a hug. No words were needed. Not today. Maybe down the line, but not today. A few hard pats on the backs to each other and Miroku left the car and jogged to the entrance After a few more moments, Inuyasha got out of the car and slowly made his way in.

He looked around and it was like a reunion. There were many people laughing at the stories of Kagome and some were crying because of the love they had for her. He made his way into the room and was met with Ms. Higurashi. She looked frail, pale and tired. She took hold of his hands and kissed the back of them. His eyes began to leak. She shouldn't be comforting him. It should be the other way around.

"Sit with me." She said as she led him to the front where the casket was. They both sat in silence for a moment until, "She loved you so much. I remember where you would come around and she would hide the fact that you visited her room a couple of times."

"Ms. Higurashi..."

"Mama. Remember? Call me mama." She looked at him and smiled.

"Mama... I couldn't... I wasn't there to pro-protect her. She was... I'm sorry, mama." He put his face in his hands. He couldn't look at her.

She rubbed his back. "It's ok, love." Her voice cracked and he looked at her. Tears were sliding down. Though her smile never waivered. "My baby was safe with you. She loved you. And even though she was taken from us, I will do my best to show you the same love she had shown you."

"You... you shouldn't be comforting me, I'm supposed to be comforting you!"

"You are. You're here aren't you? Knowing how much you cared for her is comfort enough." She kissed his hand again and he couldn't take it anymore. He got up and ran to the bathroom, whimpers coming from inside the stall. Miroku, watching, followed him there.

"Inuyasha--"

"I'm useless Miroku. I-- I thought I could do this, but I can't. I can't say goodbye."

"... You remember when we were kids, and we would go on these adventures? You would pretend you were some kind of evil guy, but you would always help us. You with your fake claws, Sango and her cat, me with my staff, Kagome with her makeshift bow and arrows? There wasn't anything we couldn't accomplish."

"Miroku--"

"We were a team. We always had each other's back. First breakups, first run-ins with the law. What I'm saying is, you don't have to handle this alone. Funerals are for comfort, not just for saying goodbye. You have us for hard times like these. What else are friends and family for?"

The stall door opened to Miroku silently weeping. Patting his back, Inuyasha gave his friend a hug and they walked out into the service. Inuyasha took his seat next to Ms. Higurashi and service began.

--

The service was coming to an end. It was really beautiful. There were a few people who told stories about Kagome and the time they spent together. Inuyasha dreaded the thought of him saying a few words but it was time. Ms. Higurashi squeezing his hand, he released and made his way up. He was standing by her casket looking out at all the people that had come to pay their respects to the love of his life.

"I loved her. I will always love her. She was my pride and joy." He chuckled. " I know its a bit weird to use that expression but she was. She... *ehem* She had this light and every time I saw her. It was like I was in the presence of an angel. She was my angel. She saved me." His voice cracked. "She was my everything... My heart breaks at the fact that I have to see her off like this." He choked back a sob. "The pain we feel now will get easier to bear, But lets keep with us the memories of her and what she had taught us. She was kind, she shared her food." He laughed. "Very selfless. She was a fighter. Had a black eye in high school to prove it." There were a few chuckles here and there. "She loved many and... and she will be missed dearly. Always my love, never... not anything... else." His voice broke. He cried. He cried out long and hard. Collapsing to his knees, clenching his chest. His silver hair came loose and seemingly covered his body. Crying could be heard, weeping throughout the room. Souta and Miroku, weeping along, helped him to his seat.

———————————————————————————-

It was a while before everyone started to file out. And soon he was left alone. The casket was open but Inuyasha never looked in. Her lifeless face was more than he could handle. He wanted her to just wake up. He wanted this to all be a joke. He wanted her to say "Gotcha!" and they would just laugh it off. But she never did. She never spoke a word while all these people shared her stories. She never laughed at the jokes with everyone else. She was gone. His Kagome.

"Inuyasha." He looked up.

"Hey, Kikyo. You made it."

"Wouldn't miss it. How was the service?"

"Sad... painful." He said wiping his face. Feeling the dried tears on his cheeks.

Kikyo sat down beside him. "You know what Kagome would say at this moment?"

"What?" He said looking up.

"You guys don't know me at all. These flowers are atrocious."

Chuckling, he said, "I know. She was always like that."

"Remember when we were little and she kept trying to play with us. She just wouldn't let you go."

"Yeah..."

"Hey. It's ok to let her go."

"Easy for you to say." He said looking at her. You could hear the agitation in his voice.

It was quiet. Kikyo looked at him. He hadn't noticed before but she looks worn out as well. Her eyes were about to overflow. "Inuyasha, I lost her too." His ears fell. "We might have fought a lot and we might have had a time where we didn't speak but I will never have a chance to make amends. I know you're hurting but we all are." Her voice stern and full of hurt.

"I... I'm sorry. I just... she was..."

"I know." She said wiping her tears. "Hey," she continued, smiling. "Would you like to say goodbye with me? I uh... I can't do this alone."

"... Kikyo... Of course. Now can be your chance to make amends."

Kikyo nodded and they both walked up to the casket. Inuyasha closed his eyes on the way up and he heard Kikyo's breath hitch. Shakily, "It is I, Kikyo, your sister. I wasn't finished fighting with you yet. I wasn't done. You were supposed to wait until we got old and when we were in out 80s, that is when we would have made up. You weren't supposed to go first. You left me behind." Inuyasha refused to look. He could hear the hurt and pain in Kikyo's voice. "How dare you leave me. You're MY little sister. I'm supposed to die before you. You... I was always supposed to be first." Inuyasha heard the sobs and felt the trembling woman beside him. His heart was in pieces.

As Kikyo slumped down, trying to contain her emotions, Inuyasha opened his eyes. There she was, as if she was sleeping. White skin and luscious hair. It was as if she was sleeping, at peace. He wanted to reach out to her but he feared that her skin would wake him out of his delusion. Kagome. Just as beautiful as before. He leaned in. "I will always love you." He kissed her forehead and wept softly. Pleading with the universe to bring her back but met with the reality of a love lost.

A/N:

Hi loves. Author here. It's my first story on here. I know it's a bit depressing but try not to think of it that way. Take a time to think to a person who has always been there for you. Love on them. Look at the past experiences with those people and learn from them. This story has been on my mind for a long time. I am not an writer but I think that everyone should have an outlet for things going on. Comment, don't comment, up to you. I just hope you enjoyed it.

I don't own Inuyasha.
