History Repeats Itself
Hamato Yoshi was a patient man. This came from having been through a lot in his lifetime.
He never thought he would have to watch his past repeat itself. This time it would not end the same way.
Raphael had begged him to teach Casey Jones Ninjutsu, the boy had joined his sons on many missions and proven he can fight but this way he could hone his skills and become an actual warrior and ally.
Splinter hadn't hesitated, he wanted his son's friend to be able to protect himself and after a few years Casey had become quite the warrior. He could even win against his sons sometimes.
He had seen how Casey and Donatello behaved around each other, friendly enough but both warring over the affections of April O'Neil. Yoshi was concerned but when he raised the issue with Donnie himself the boy had assured him it was all for nothing, Don had figured Casey and April were likely to happen.
He remembered the day well, when everything seemed wonderful but had actually been the beginning of this nightmare.
Donatello and April announced they were together in front of all four mutants and Casey, the brothers in particular had been thrilled over the news. They're brother had his girl and had given them hope that one day they too may find love.
Casey had silently left but the family hadn't noticed.
Over the course of Donnie and April's relationship the boy had continuously commented saying it wouldn't last and it was a relationship doomed to fail.
It irked Splinter when the boy said this so confidently behind the couple's back but he could see his sons were getting protective and fed up. It led to many arguments and harsh words.
A few years later Donatello and April announced they were engaged. Casey had asked how a mutant/human marriage was ever going to happen and they had calmly explained it wouldn't be an official marriage but it still meant the same to them. It was a promise to love each other no matter what and to stay together.
Hamato Yoshi had seen how this angered Casey, but once again the brothers were so happy they paid him no attention.
Splinter made a silent vow to keep an eye on how this would progress.
Donatello and April went away two days ago to the farmhouse for some alone time to celebrate their engagement.
The family had understood and allowed them to go as long as they promised to keep in touch, they were excited for them.
They had received a call only an hour ago.
A distressed Donatello asking his family to come as soon as possible, they needed help.
"Why what's wrong?" Leo had asked in alarm as the family listened, there was strange noises in the background. April was sounded like she was crying.
"Casey followed us up here!" Donnie sounded out of breath, "He brought the purple dragons with him!"
The family had promised to get there as soon as possible.
Leonardo was driving, Raphael was swearing quietly while trying to comfort their youngest.
Hamato Yoshi felt sick, he was afraid of what he would find.
"This is just like last time." Mikey said in a small voice, he looked to his father. "Isn't it?"
"I do not know," Splinter's voice was hollow, "But we can change the ending if it is."
"Will April die? Like Tang Shen?" Mikey asked as he trembled, "What about Donnie? You survived Sensei but what if Donnie doesn't?"
Nobody could answer.
"I don't want my brother to die!" Mikey cried and pushed his face into Raph's shoulder.
"He won't." Raph promised weakly, "We'll do everything we can to save him and April."
"I hate to say it..." Leo sighed from up front, "But Donnie comes first."
The mutants agreed guiltily.
They were frightened for their brother and what today would mean for him.
They arrived as the sun set.
They ran out of the Shellraiser only for Hamato Yoshi to feel as if he were back in the past.
The windows were smashed, they could hear April screaming. They could see the silhouette of Donnie and Casey fighting.
They tried to rush closer only to notice the purple dragons surrounding the house, a few of them holding canisters of what Splinter guessed was gasoline.
The family immediately began their fight to get inside, the raised voices from within the house kept them updated on what was going on.
"Stop! Casey, please!" April screamed as Casey swiped at Donnie with his sword, Donnie recognised it from the dojo, it was stolen.
"Casey. My family will never forgive you for this, just give up and go!" Donnie tried to calm the situation, he didn't have much choice. The boy had snuck up on them and had shattered Donnie's Bo before he had time to use it. "What about Raphael? He's your best friend, don't do this to him!"
"Give April back!" Casey demanded as he once again tried to stab his enemy, Donnie dodged but was forced to keep himself in front of April to prevent her from being hurt. April had her hands on her stomach as she cried.
"Casey..." She sobbed.
"No! April, I love you and you loved me, how could you let this freak get between us!?" Casey demanded.
"I was never in love with you." April cried, "I have always loved Donnie from the day he saved me from the Kraang!"
"Leave him and come with me or I'll burn this house to the ground." Casey growled. "I don't want to hurt you but I can't let you make this mistake!"
"Casey… I'm pregnant." April sobbed as she stepped forward and cuddled into Donnie's shell, "Donnie and I are going to have a family, it's over."
Casey froze in disgust.
The family outside fought harder than ever, Splinter didn't want his son to lose his fiancé and unborn child.
"You… You monster!" Casey scowled, he actually paled considerably. "You… you dirty monster, how could you do that to her?"
"We wanted this!" April explained hurriedly, "We want a family!"
Donnie stayed silent, he hoped April could make Casey see sense.
"I'll kill you Donatello," Casey snapped his eyes then fell on April's face, "Then I'll kill the monster growing in you."
"Touch her and I'll be forced to kill you first!" Donnie growled, April stayed behind him in fear for her child.
"Casey, you have to stop!" April begged, "Please!"
Casey let out a yell as he dove for Donnie but the turtle couldn't move, he let the sword sink into his shoulder so it couldn't touch his soon to be wife.
"DONNIE!" April screamed as the sword was pulled back out, his blood began to pour. April grabbed his shell and pulled him back away from Casey.
"Go!" Donnie turned to face her, he gripped her desperately. "You need to run! Get out and run!"
April kissed him before turning to run but her exit was blocked by Casey.
"You're not going anywhere until that monster is dead!" He snapped as he went to grab her. Donatello threw himself at the human and they both tumbled to the floor, April pushed herself against the furthest wall possible.
There were no weapons in the house, she couldn't just leave Donnie to fight alone but she had a baby to worry about.
Outside the family defeated the Purple Dragons, they went to run inside when suddenly a Dragon they hadn't seen appeared to sit up with a lit match.
"NO!" Splinter yelled as the match was flicked into the gasoline. The house was engulfed in minutes.
Raphael snapped the neck of the dragon and the four mutants stared at the blaze.
"WHAT DO WE DO!?" Mikey called over the roaring. "WE GOTTA GET IN THERE!"
Splinter shook his head, he couldn't handle this.
"THERE HAS TO BE A WAY IN!" Leo called back.
Inside the house April screamed as the flames licked the walls and floor. She hurried to the stairs intending to get above the flames.
"You'll die here!" Casey growled as he struggled to grab his blade again. "Even if I have to die too!"
"You'll kill April!" Donnie ground out, "If you really love her then let her escape!"
"She'll leave with me!" Casey finally grabbed his blade and pushed himself out from under his enemy.
He slammed the sword down and relished in the sound of cracking shell.
"DONNIE!" April screamed.
The family outside felt their hearts stop, that scream scared them. At that moment the house shuddered as it began to collapse. A piece of roof fell down on top of the flames blocking the door, the family could finally run in.
They stopped and took in the sight.
Donatello lay off to the side, a sword protruding from his stomach. His legs were buried under a pile of rubble, near him lay an unconscious Casey who also was half buried under rubble. The stairs had collapsed completely, the family could see April's back nearby them but couldn't tell her condition.
Hamato Yoshi ran to his son and pulled him close, his other sons were quick to join his side.
"Is he…?" Mikey asked, afraid of the answer.
Splinter began to check Donnie's vital sign when his son cracked his eyes open.
"M-Mikey?" He croaked as he struggled to move.
"Yeah bro! I'm here!" Mikey immediately replied.
"Donatello, it's ok… we're here." Splinter soothed as he helped his son sit up as much as he could, they couldn't take the blade out.
Donnie shakes his head dozily before his eyes suddenly widen.
"April!" His head snapped towards the stairs, his eyes immediately land on her back, "APRIL!"
He struggled to try and get to her.
"Stop. Stop!" Splinter soothed, "You are in no condition, we must get you out of here immediately."
"What about April? I'm not leaving her!" Donnie frowned,
"I will see to her. Leonardo, Raphael, Michelangelo! Help your brother out!" He commanded. The sons were quick to help their brother get out of the burning building. Splinter knew this house wouldn't hold up any longer.
He hurried to April and dragged her out from under the broken stairs, he went to feel her pulse but paused. A sharp chunk of stair was protruding from her stomach, he knew the baby was gone. He then noticed there was no rising or falling of her chest.
Still, he felt her pulse and confirmed his fear.
She was gone.
His son had lost everything just like he had that night.
He allowed himself to shed a few tears for the unfairness of it all but soon forced himself to escape the soon to collapse building, he glanced briefly at Casey.
"H-Help" Casey croaked as he stretched a weak hand towards the old rat. Splinter hesitated.
He was not proud of this but in that moment a surge of hatred and disgust hit him, he turned away from Casey and left him to burn.
His son needed him, he wouldn't waste time on a murderer.
He wouldn't be alone like he had been, he wouldn't need to fear Casey coming back like he had.
Splinter threw himself out the door as the building finally gave in.
Donatello watched everything crash and burn, he saw his father crawl over to them with no April in his arms.
"No…" He breathed, his eyes darted back to the building. "NO!"
He forced himself to his feet and tried to throw himself back into the house, April was still in there!
His brothers grabbed him as gently as they could.
They cried as he screamed his lost love's name over and over until he was hoarse.
"She is gone my son…" Splinter cried with him. "I am so sorry. There was nothing I could do."
"No… April…" Donatello fell to his knees as he sobbed brokenly.
The brothers and their father were taken back to that night. They watched their father scream in misery and now the same was happening to one of them.
They hugged him tightly and cried with him while trying to offer some comfort.
As the family mourned their loss the fire raged on consuming everything inside, in the distance sirens could be heard.
"We must go." Splinter whispered to his hurting family, "Come… We cannot be seen here."
He and Leonardo pull Donnie up and half drag him into the shell raiser, Mikey and Raph follow behind.
The family are gone before the fire engine arrives.
