Chapter 5

Clubs weren´t exactly on Annabeth's favorite places to spend her Friday night. She liked more staying at home and having a nice chat with friends with a cup of wine and a lot of snacks to eat. Besides she had gone to enough parties on her first years as a university student and had grown tired of them quick. It just wasn´t her style. However, supporting Thalia was way more important than her taste in spending her free time.

"Are you nervous?" Annabeth asked her best friend while she and her bandmates were preparing their instruments for their show. They were on a medium poor lighted room at the back of the establishment, where the manager of the place invited all the bands who were playing during the night to ready themselves before going up the stage.

Thalia checked if her electric guitar was properly tuned, for the sixth time. "Nop"

"She's always nervous" The bassist, Zoë Nightshade rolled her eyes at Thalia's behavior. She was a beautiful young woman with fiery black eyes and dark brown hair. Annabeth had only met her twice before, but she liked the way the bassist kept Thalia in check.

"You should have seen her when we played in that fancy hotel bar a few months ago" Bianca Di Angelo, added while playing with her drumsticks. She smirked when Thalia threw her a nasty look. "She missed almost every note in one of our songs"

"We were playing on a high roof!" Thalia defended herself. "You know heights are really not my thing"

"Good thing we are underground then" Annabeth couldn't resist her commentary. Her best friend stuck out her tongue. Then, she turned her attention to Zoë who was going through some notes on the songs they were playing that night.

"Wow Annabeth, you were not kidding when you said it was a crossover night," Piper said next to her, eyeing the Salsa group who was sharing the 'dressing room' with them. It had been a last-minute decision to invite her coworker, but Annabeth was really bonding with her and decided it was time for them to develop a friendship outside of work. That, and the fact that she really didn't want to be alone with Luke Castellan. She didn't trust her feelings yet.

"Yeah, it's kind of their specialty"

Annabeth decided it was time for Piper and her to leave the busy band to finish its preparations. The moment they stepped out of the door, they were flooded with crazy loud electronic music and the sound of bottles tingling and people laughing.

The club was divided into three sections. At the very middle, there was a huge stage with the shape of a circle, slowly rotating, and was currently being prepared for The Hunters (Thalia's band) performance. The second section was a ring around the stage designed like a dance floor, which was empty. People needed a few more hours of drinking to have the courage to dance, therefore, probably the reason for having the Salsa group play late at night.

Kronos was a trendy place in the city, so Annabeth had suspected it would be crowded, but that night was really bursting with people. She was afraid they weren't going to find a table to sit, when she saw a familiar blond-haired guy with a big scar on his face, sitting a few tables away from the bar. As if he could feel her stare, Luke turned and immediately spotted her. Annabeth's heart stopped for a few seconds.

"Are those your friends?" Piper asked when she noticed Luke, who was now waving at them. Annabeth recognized some of the people sitting with him. Ethan Nakamura, Chris Rodriguez, and her girlfriend Clarisse La Rue, and Drew Tanaka. Thalia and she had never liked Luke's friends in high school, but Annabeth was a young adult now. She had to be mature and swallow her impulse to ignore them and just get another table.

"Not exactly. Just four acquaintances and one ex-boyfriend" She answered waving back at Luke. Piper gave her a kind look.

"I think I saw a table by the restrooms, in case you want to ignore them and just sit faraway" she added, reading Annabeth's mind. A few guys passed and whistled at her friend, but Piper just ignored them and continued to keep an eye on the empty table by the busy restroom hall.

"Nah, we are supposed to behave like grownups now"

"Well I say screw it"

Annabeth smiled thankfully at Piper. Her friend was a real showstopper even if she tried not to be. She had a high ponytail with thin braids framing her face and a green feather attached to one of them, matching her current eye color. She was wearing a stunning gold jacket, a white tank top, and black ragged jeans. Whereas she was only wearing her usual black Levi's Jacket, a loose gray t-shirt and her usual blue jeans. She really needed to buy more casual clothes.

She started making her way through the sea of people, and with each step closer to Luke she could feel her heart aching a little bit more. Things between them hadn't exactly ended in good terms and the last time she had seen him they had screamed very awful things to one another.

When they finally reached the table, Annabeth felt all the stares on them, and things were even more awkward when Luke hugged her, and she didn't return it. She felt Piper tensing beside her. When the hug was over, Annabeth was still frozen by her ex-boyfriend's way of greeting her.

"Hey, you" he finally said. "How long since I last saw you?"

"Two years," she said, then smiled forcefully. "It's nice to see you again" She really didn't want to, but having him touch her again, brought some memories of them when they started just dating on her senior year. Like riding their bikes through her street or how he used to put his arm around her shoulders and kissed her whenever he picked her up on his Ford after school. That was four years ago.

Annabeth cleared her throat. "So, everyone, this is Piper"

After introductions, Annabeth decided to ignore Luke and heard Clarisse's stories about the Army and Drew's monologue about her being the most important influencer on Instagram at the moment. Piper remained silent for most of the time, rolling her eyes at Drew's clear lack of humility. Annabeth liked the confidence of her old classmate, but it was her sense of superiority and the way she bullied a lot of kids in school that made her never get along with Drew.

Finally, the manager of the place announced Thalia's band and Annabeth cheered as the band got ready on stage. Piper asked her about the story of their friendship.

"We met when I was in Primary school and she was in Secondary school. She protected me from some annoying kids who liked destroying my building drawings" she replied, intentionally leaving out the part were Luke also helped her with those kids. She noticed him peeking at her when she finished her story, but he remained silent. "She always took care of me" she added more to him, than to Piper.

The Hunters started playing and everyone in the table stopped their discussions to hear them play. Annabeth noticed they had changed their usual hard rock to classic rock, surely as a petition from the manager. Thalia mustn't have liked that request, but a girl's gotta eat.

She sang the first two songs at full volume with Piper and applauded as loud as she could whenever they finished. Then she talked with her coworker about college, their nearing graduation, and their future plans.

"Are you going to keep working with Aurora after you graduate?"

"I want to…just not as her assistant" Annabeth replied, truthfully. "I've been postponing talking to her about it, but since my graduation is next February…"

"Well, you should talk to her as soon as you can. I think you're wasting potential as an assistant"

Annabeth laughed. "Wow, honest much?"

Piper laughed too. "That's my pep talk for you"

"I wish getting a promotion was that easy" The Hunters' third song ended and almost everyone at the club applauded. At that moment Annabeth was really glad Piper had accepted to go out with her that night because she was actually having a great time. Until Luke decided to stop ignoring her,

"So, how's your family?" He asked once Piper had gone to the restroom. "Are they still living in San Francisco?"

"Yes. Dad still has his job there" she said avoiding his blue eyes. She tried to look cold and distant so he would just take the hint of not wanting to talk to him. But somehow, she just couldn't be rude to him. "What about you? How's your mom?"

"Oh, you know…she has good days and bad days," he said with a bit of a sad tone. Annabeth almost reached to grab his hand to comfort him, but she stopped herself in time. Suddenly, his face turned serious. "Annabeth about what happened two years ago…."

"Who wants some drinks?" Piper had arrived. She shot a look at Annabeth clearly reading the tension between Luke and her. Everyone raised their hand, and the blond girl offered herself to go with Piper for drinks.

They managed to fight their way to the bar, where a strange guy with golden eyes was serving alcohol at an incredible speed. Piper snatched one of the drink menus from a drunk guy next to them. They scanned the names, which did not have the descriptions under them, so they decided to ask the bartender about them.

"Excuse me, what do you have that can keep us dancing a few more hours?" Annabeth asked, hoping having a strong drink would help her keep going through the awkwardness of the night.

"Surely not Champagne because that would just make you drowsy for the rest of the evening"

Annabeth froze when she heard his voice and felt an odd tingling sensation on her stomach. Perseus Blofis appeared beside her with a casual white t-shirt and his usual jeans. His hair was as messy as ever, and he had a troublemaker smile that made her heartbeat race. She couldn't help smiling back.

"Hi Percy"

"Hi, Annabeth. Haven´t seen you in a while" He winked. They literally had just met the day before, when they talked about the beginning of their project in San Francisco. Somehow, Annabeth was feeling more and more comfortable with Percy. He always made her laugh and had the art of making work a little less nerve-wracking. "Didn't know you were a club girl" he said taking the menu from her hands. She let him grab it.

"And I thought you didn't drink," she said eyeing him curiously.

"I don´t. Jason and I are just getting drinks for our friends" he said, still eyeing the list of cocktails. Annabeth hadn't noticed the guy standing behind him. He had a small scar on his lip and electric blue eyes, just like…

"Jason?"

"Annabeth?"

She felt Piper tensing up beside her. Percy eyed them suspiciously, while Jason gave her a small greeting hug.

"Does Thalia know you are here?" she asked. The blond guy ran a hand through his hair.

"Actually, I was planning to surprise her tonight," He said, but his eyes were fixed on her coworker. Piper was suddenly interested in The Hunters' performance.

"You two know each other?" Percy asked, with a raised eyebrow.

"He's my best friend's little brother" Annabeth replied, trying to figure out what was happening between Jason and Piper. Percy was as oblivious as ever. He ordered a few drinks before returning to the conversation.

"What a small world," he said, still unaware of the strange ambiance. "You didn't answer my question" he continued focused on Annabeth. "You like clubbing?"

Annabeth just shot him a look.

He chuckled. "I imagined it. Then why are you here?"

"Thalia, my best friend, is on stage now. I had to come and support her"

"You're kidding! We also came to support our friend's sister, Bianca. She's also on The Hunters" He said, accepting the drinks from the bartender. He gave some to Jason for him to carry, and the guy almost dropped one. Clearly his head was somewhere else.

"It is a small world after all"

"What's taking you guys so long?" a dark-haired guy complained, nearing them.

Ethan Nakamura was not a warm person. He always treated everyone with disdain and was very impatient.

"We were only away for five minutes" Annabeth answered harshly. Ethan ignored her before greeting the bartender as it was his best friend. He ordered a jar of the 'usual', which made her wonder if he was a frequent client of the place. Piper shifted nervously beside her, and Annabeth decided it was time for them to go back to their table.

"Well, Jason It was nice seeing you again. I hope you drop by our place one of these days so we can talk more" she said, eyeing suspiciously the orange liquid bubbling in Ethan's hands.

"What about me?" Percy asked with Puppy eyes. "Was it nice to see me again?"

Annabeth laughed at his expression. "I see you more than Thalia, Percy"

"Is that a bad thing?" he asked, with a little bit of hurt in his eyes.

"Of course, not" Annabeth replied too quickly for her sake, and now she noticed Piper giving her a look from beside her. "And it's better now that you are actually arriving on time" Percy smiled triumphally. Since their little trip to the Art Gallery, Percy had never been late to one of the meetings and, sometimes, he even had the documents ready before Annabeth could even ask for them. He had started to take his job more seriously. Occasionally, they even finished some of their meetings earlier than expected and managed to grab a cheeseburger at one of Percy's favorite places.

They waved each other goodbye before the two girls pushed their way back to their table.

"Sorry, I didn't introduce you" Annabeth apologized to her coworker. "It's just that you looked pretty uncomfortable with Jason"

"It's okay" Piper replied, before furrowing her eyebrows and grabbing Annabeth's elbow to make her stop. She sighed before asking "Do you remember that day when you saw me with the same clothes as the day before?"

Annabeth nodded slowly.

"Well, you now know the culprit"

Annabeth's eyes grew wide in surprise.

"Jason? Really? So, it was just a one-night thing?" She tried to suppress her laughter. Piper wouldn't appreciate her mocking her situation. She wondered why Jason didn't tell Thalia he had been in New York for several weeks now. But it was a topic for another moment.

Piper grimaced. "It's not that simple. I really like him, but we don't have anything in common. We tried texting for a couple of days, but the conversation quickly died down"

"I'm not an expert in relationships, but a one-night stand and some texting aren't most likely the bases of a solid connection" Piper still looked confused. "Look, what if you give him another chance. Just the two of you talking, face to face, with clothes on and preferably in a public place. Like a real date"

Piper gave her a small smile. "I'll think about it"

Ethan was already serving the seven glasses of the mysterious liquid. Luke passed one to Annabeth and one to Piper. She took the glass to her nose and was greeted with the smell of industrial limes and gummies.

"What is it?" she asked.

Ethan only shrugged and said "Specialty of the house"

Annabeth narrowed her eyes at him, but before she could refuse the drink, Luke touched her hands. "It's okay Annabeth, we've ordered this before. It's not strong"

She was still skeptical of the drink, but this was Luke. He knew her outstandingly well, and he wouldn't do anything to hurt her…at least physically. Piper had already taken a few sips from hers, clearly trying to ease the embarrassment from her meeting with Jason.

The liquid tasted overly sweet and the punch of alcohol at the end almost made her puke. However, she kept drinking and by the fifth sip, she was used to its taste. When she finished her first glass, Annabeth felt a lot calmer and easy-going. She was now talking to Drew and Clarisse about high school and didn't mind them being completely self-centered about it. Even Piper asked some questions about their jobs.

After the second and third glass, Thalia's band had finished their act. Their table erupted in huge applause and even Annabeth whistled at them. She wanted to go hug her friend, but the manager had invited the band to another table and a set of drinks. She was starting to feel the warmth from the number of human bodies in the room and the alcohol getting to her head. She took off her jacket and left it at one of the chairs. The Salsa Group started assembling their show.

By the time she had finished her sixth drink, Annabeth felt giddy, happy, and lightheaded. The club was full of people dancing (or attempting to dance) Salsa, and everything felt extremely vibrant and full of energy.

Luke and Annabeth were now talking as if they never ceased being best friends. They talk about the camp they attended to when they were kids and Luke's job as an important logistics coordinator at FedEx.

"That's great Luke. I always thought you were too rebellious to have an actual corporative job" Annabeth said, jokingly. She ignored the way Luke brushed his hand against hers and how sometimes she reached to put a strand of her hair behind her ear. She wanted to blame her blush and her lack of breath on the alcohol and not on the way Luke still made her feel.

"It's great you think that way Annabeth. Your opinion has always been important to me" He grabbed her hand and stepped closer to her. She saw him looking at her lips and Annabeth wished he would just kiss her, like old times. But the memories from their last fight came crashing down on her and she flinched away from his touch. He looked hurt.

Annabeth realized Piper wasn't beside her and cursed herself for not being more attentive to her coworker. "I'm going to look for Piper" she muttered and left quickly, leaving a wounded ex-boyfriend focused suddenly on his drink.

She went first to the restrooms and didn't see her on the huge line for the women's toilets, then to the bar where she didn't catch any glimpse of her friend's green feather. Finally, she found Piper on the dance floor with no other than Jason himself. She gave her a thumbs up when their eyes met and she was glad her coworker was having a good time. Jason gave her a few spins and Piper laughed drunkenly.

Her little moment with Luke had sobered her up a bit, but alcohol was catching up again with her and she found her body moving at the rhythm of the tropical music. She lost herself in the dance floor and twirled around strangers. She felt dizzy in a good way and every work or ex-boyfriend related tension left her body for the first time in months.

The dizziness grew bigger until Annabeth felt herself trip with her own feet and landed on the arms of some stranger. "Ups, sorry…" she said trying to get back on her feet without giving away how drunk she was.

Percy was looking at her with an amused expression. He looked completely sober and in control of himself. Annabeth thought it was ironic, giving she was the most collected one in their friendship.

"Oh, hi!" she said giddily. Annabeth's vision was a little bit funny, but she could recognize those sea-green eyes anywhere. "What are you doing here?"

He had a huge grin on his face, probably from seeing her pretty drunk. "I just noticed how much fun you were having on your own, and I thought about joining you"

Annabeth started dancing again and she heard Percy laughing. She gave a few twirls before offering him her hand. "Then dance with me"

Percy raised an eyebrow. "You dance Salsa?"

"Not at all. Do you?" Percy's eyes were gleaming under the club's lights.

"A little bit" He stated before accepting her hand and carefully putting the other one on her lower back. "Just follow my lead"

She never imagined Percy being a good dancer, but he gracefully guided her through the dance floor and his feet were nimble and agile. She giggled like a little girl each time he made her turn, and he just laughed whenever she stepped on his foot by accident or lost the rhythm of the song. Annabeth noticed the expert Salsa couples were extremely close to each other while they were dancing, and she blushed at the thought of being like that with Percy. But he, the gentlemen he was, kept a prudent distance between the two of them. Annabeth was kind of disappointed at that.

"How did you learn to dance like this?" she asked when the current song had ended. She was sad at the prospect of returning to her table, but as soon as the next piece started Percy grabbed her hand again and they continued to dance together.

"My friend Reyna" he motioned to a far table where there was a group of people laughing and sharing stories like old friends. She managed to recognize Grover and Jason. "She told us it was a necessary skill in the school of life, so she committed to teaching all of us. You should see her dance. I only know the basics, but she is a dance machine"

"And now you're teaching me," she said out of breath. Annabeth was really sweating now. She felt the burst of energy starting to leave her body and the dizziness growing deeper and heavier. Weird, she had never reacted to alcohol like that before. Instinctively, she supported more of her weight on Percy, but he didn't seem to mind. He decided to change their pace to a lower one.

"Yeah, you're my second student"

"Second?"

"I taught my mom first"

After spending several weeks working with him, Annabeth had learned Percy loved his mom above everything else in his world. He spoke highly of her and his eyes were full of pride whenever he talked about her being an excellent writer to Annabeth. She could also bake the best blue cookies in the whole world.

By the third song, Annabeth had her whole body supported on Percy. Without wanting to, they had ended like the salsa couples she talked about. Only that she was sweating cold and her limbs felt like sacks of lead. She was mad at herself. She was finally having a great time at a club, and she had to screw it up by drinking too much. Annabeth tried to hide it, but by the end of the third dance, she couldn't keep up with him.

"Annabeth are you okay?" He asked, with a little bit of concern on his eyes. She waved at him dismissively.

"Yeah, I didn't count my drinks, that's all" But that wasn't true. Annabeth knew her limit and she thought she had stopped at the right moment. Then why was she feeling so bad? Percy was about to say something, but he stopped when he felt his pocket vibrating. He took his phone and Annabeth peaked at the ID caller. Rachel.

"Answer her" she blurted. Percy kept looking at his phone without saying anything, he seemed about to hang on her, but Annabeth quickly said, "I'm going back to my table and look for my friend". She turned without waiting for an answer and started pushing through the crowded club.

The floor was already sticky with drinks spilled all over it. People were pushing, shouting and some even puking. Annabeth felt disoriented and the variety of smells only made her dizziness worse. She was starting to see with a sort of distortion and her tongue was abnormally dry.

Instead of arriving at her table, Annabeth found herself at the bottom of the stairs, and she decided to have a breath of fresh air to clear her mind. She almost tripped on the heavy doors, and the cold air of October wrapped her aggressively. Her jacket was inside. Annabeth cursed. Fresh air wasn't helping at all. She rested her back on the wall to the right of the club's entrance. She closed her eyes and tried to catch her breath.

"Annabeth?" She opened her eyes to find Luke. His pupils were completely dilated, and she could smell the alcohol emanating from him. She guessed she reeked of it as well. "I saw you going up the stairs" She pinched her nose bridge.

"And you didn´t bring me my jacket?"

"Uh…"

"It's okay," she said. She didn't have the strength to argue with him. But he had other ideas.

"Annabeth, we need to talk"

The dizziness was followed by an intense headache. Her vision was almost gone, and she was running out of air. What was happening to her?

"Luke…now's not…" Her mouth was heavy like she was under the influence of anesthesia. He grabbed her arm strongly.

"I am sorry I cheated on you Annabeth. It was a moment of weakness…You know how angry I was at my father and you were so busy with your studies that I felt like I wasn´t important to you anymore" He rushed her with a shaky voice. He was too drunk to notice how hard he was pressing her skin. She tried to push him with her arm, but it was extremely weak.

"You're hurting me…"

"I know I hurt you, but I never stopped loving you Annabeth. And deep down I know you still have feelings for me" He was now imprisoning her against the wall. Anger was bubbling up inside of her, but she seemed trapped inside her own mind. Like she was a spectator watching the whole scene.

"Stop it" But she knew a drunk Luke was someone you couldn't reason with.

Suddenly she felt the pressure from her arm disappear and in the blink of an eye, her ex's butt was lying on the ground, a confused expression on his face. Annabeth felt so weak she was tempted to slide down and put her own but on the floor. Instead, she closed her eyes.

The muffled sound of Luke's angry voice reached her ears. But he wasn't talking to her.

"She told you to stop man" Percy's equally angry voice resonated within her. She heard a few more bickering and the sound of someone being pushed, then a third voice calling both men to order. Probably the bouncer. She heard the sound of footsteps going away and flinched when a hand touched her shoulder. Annabeth opened her eyes to found sea green ones full of concern. She hadn´t realized she was bending over her stomach.

"What's wrong?" he asked. Annabeth wanted to answer but instead turned her body violently to the side so she wouldn't puke on him.

"For the gods Annabeth. How much did you drink?" He patted her back carefully. She wanted to scream that is wasn't normal for her to react that way to alcohol. She had been way drunker when she was a freshman and had never experience that kind of discomfort. Not that she was proud of that of course. But instead, an incoherent babbling got out of her mouth. Her lack of speech must have been the detonator of Percy's concern because immediately she felt a warm oversized jacket being wrapped around her and managed to hear the determination on his words. "C'mon. I'm taking you to the ER"

The ride on Percy's Prius was like a rollercoaster ride in slow motion. He had given her a paper bag in case she wanted to throw up, but the dizziness had gone away and now Annabeth felt numb. She heard Percy making a few calls probably informing his friends about his sudden absence. She wanted to scold him for talking while driving, but instead, she just stared at the city's lights.

He parked the car on the underground hospital's parking and helped Annabeth get out of the Toyota. At that point, she was practically a ragdoll. They reached the lobby just as Annabeth felt she was about to pass out from exhaustion, but she resisted so Percy wouldn't have to deal with her whole weight. Once the nurse on the ER reception noticed them, she rushed a wheelchair to Annabeth and she gladly took it.

"How can I help you?" she kindly asked quickly checking Annabeth's vitals.

"I think my friend has been drugged" Percy said deadly serious.

Drugged? How's that possible?

"Ok then, tell me the story," she said, going back to her desk and starting to type Percy's description on her computer.

"We'll let her pass in a moment," she said smiling kindly at Annabeth. "But I will need her insurance info and her ID"

"Uh…" Percy ran a hand through his hair. "I think she left her stuff back at the club. Could we pay as particulars?"

"Sure thing…Then I'll need her name and the ID of the one paying" Percy opened her wallet and got his ID along with his credit card out. He also gave the nurse the little info he had about her.

"Percy…" Annabeth didn't want him to pay for her. Health care was crazy expensive, and Percy couldn't spend his salary on Annabeth's stupid mistake.

"It's okay, you can pay me later" He winked at her, and she decided to drop it.

The nurse took a few more moments to type stuff on her computer, before nodding at him. "Very well, Mr. Jackson. Please follow me this way"

Jackson?

Percy hadn't corrected the nurse on his last name. Annabeth's head was spinning but she knew as hell his last name was not Jackson…or was it? Gods, her headache was becoming a drill making its way through her skull.

He gently grabbed her wheelchair and followed the nurse through the white hallway. The ER was crowded. It was no surprise since New York was always a busy city, with lots of crazy things happening.

Percy helped her into the stretcher and the nurse closed the blue curtains around them so they could have a little privacy. Annabeth laid down and finally let herself relax into the medical bed. The nurse left just as a young resident neared her bed. He was a handsome guy with blond hair and baby blue eyes. His face showed kindness.

"Hi, Percy" Both guys greeted each other with a firm handshake.

"Hey Will"

The resident turned to Annabeth and gently helped her sit down on the bed. "You must be Annabeth," he said looking at his clipboard. "My name is Will Solace. Is it okay if I check on you?" he smiled warmly, putting his papers beside her. She nodded and he examined her with more depth. Finally, he sighed and turned to Percy "You said she's been drugged?"

Annabeth tried to answer herself, but again non-sense babbling came from her mouth. Both young men shared a look. Will grabbed his clipboard and scribbled some notes. "We'll have to run some blood tests. You'll have to stay here for a few more hours, meanwhile, I'll give you some intravenous serum to help you with the symptoms. Sadly, you wouldn't be our first case tonight" He patted Annabeth's shoulder gently, before asking her to lay down again.

Will exited the room and Percy's phone rang again. He answered and talked to Grover for a few minutes. Annabeth's gaze was focused on the ceiling and an eternity seemed to pass before two nurses came back to take her blood sample and inject her the serum.

When they were gone, Percy grabbed her hand. "You should rest. That thing will take some time to start working" Annabeth's eyes closed, and she finally drifted to sleep.
