They left Venture Industries with a tote bag full of supplies. Brock apparently spared no expense, and now they had plenty of diapers, clothes, and bottles among other basic necessities.
"Ok." White prepped himself. "What do we tell them?"
Billy looked up at the brownstone. It was a very homily place, yet now it felt dauntingly large. "We tell them we found her on the street and bought the essentials." It was simple as long as he didn't think about it too hard.
"Alright. In we go on one, two..." He twisted the doorknob. "Three!"
The two walked into a mostly empty house. Col Gentleman had left the tv on and a commercial for a type of frying pan was playing obnoxiously loud. The sound of water running in the kitchen let them know Rose was home, probably preparing supper. Seeing the coast was clear, the two attempted to sneak upstairs when a voice rang through the hallway.
"Hey fellas! Whatcha got there?"
Pete swore under his breathe as him and Billy turned around to face Rodney. They had forgotten about the retired super solider.
"Is that a baby?" He asked.
"We,uh, f-found her and, um..." Billy stuttered out. The younger man was never good at lying. Luckily Peter jumped in.
"We found her on the street. Terrible, isn't it? We couldn't just leave her out there!"
"Oh wow!" Rodney inched closer to get a good look at her. "So you two snatched her up before some criminal could, eh? That's noble of you."
The older man crouched to Billy's level and stuck his hand out to move the blanket away from the baby's face. The infant reached out and grabbed his finger, much to his delight.
"Aw, look at that! She likes uncle Rodney already!"
"What's the commotion in here?" Col Gentleman asked as he walked out of the bathroom. "A guy takes a break during the History Channel World War 2 marathon and comes back to all this chatter!"
"Horace, the boys here decided to adopt!"
"We did not!" Billy clarified.
"Oh, shes a cute one." Col Gentleman didn't seem to listen to Billy's denial. "Shes gonna be a real beauty when she gets older, I can tell."
"You're gonna have to beat the boys off of her with a stick!" Rodney joked.
"We might not actually keep her-" Billy began. He was interrupted by Rose gasping.
"Is that what I think it is?" Rose said in a startled tone. Her smile gave away her feelings.
"We found her on the street and we couldn't just leave her so-"
Once again, Billy was cut off. Rose grabbed the baby from him and started gently rocking her.
"Oh William, she has green eyes too! Shes adorable."
"We'll have to make a little nursery for her. I could probably do it. I've gotten a bit tired of remaking battle scenes with army men." Col Gentleman offered.
"Oh im so happy. I just wish you boys could've gotten married before you decided to adopt."
"Oh c'mon Rose." Rodney interjected. "They're practically common law at this point."
"Well, yes, that's true." Rose conceded. She turned back to White and Billy. "What's her name?"
Billy began to stutter so Pete blurted out the first name that came to mind.
"Rose!"
Rose stopped rocking the baby, and Billy gave him a look he couldn't place. All eyes were on him, and for once it made him nervous.
"Uh, short for Rosanna." He clarified.
"That's a pretty name." Rodney said, daring to break the awkward silence.
Col Gentleman nodded. "Little Rosanna here will be a breath of fresh air in this old house."
Billy and Pete shared a look of distress that went unnoticed by the other residents.
Dinner that evening was a minefield of questions neither of them had answers to. "How long have you to wanted a baby?", "Where did you find her again?" And, of course, "When are you two getting married?" Both of them were more than happy to retreat to their bedroom after dinner and finally get some rest.
Except they weren't sure where to put Rosanna.
"I guess she'll have to sleep in bed with one of us for now."
"Yeah i guess. But who?"
"Well, I have work tomorrow, so..."
"We work together, buddy. Besides, you only use like, what, half of your bed? C'mon."
"I actually work! You just goof off with Rusty."
"Im a idea man! I come up with concepts!"
"Name one."
"I came up with Rosanna's name."
"First of all, that doesn't count. Second of all, i know you named her after my mom. Don't act slick."
"Im just saying I came up with a great name."
"A temporary name until we find her real parents."
"Yeah."
The conversation was over and they still hasn't decided who would take the baby. Billy figured he would, once again, be the adult and laid her down on his bed while he changed into his pajamas. Pete remained quiet until after he turned off the light and both men were in bed.
"I'll take her tomorrow night. Like shifts." He offered.
"That works for me."
It once again went quiet, and sleep took over the house... Until about 2am, when Rosanna decided to start crying and both men spent the next few hours trying to lull her back to sleep. This was going to be harder than expected.
