Days had turned into weeks which turned into a month. Neither of them had any luck in finding the identity of whoever left Rosanna on their doorstep, nor did they find any more clues. Col Gentleman stayed true to his word and made a fairly sturdy crib, which the boys were thankful for.
"I dunno if saying this makes me a bad foster parent, but I was always worried i was gonna roll on top of her whenever she slept with me." Pete admitted while handing the baby a toy.
"I was afraid she was going to roll off the bed. Glad we don't have to worry about that anymore!"
Billy almost felt foolish appreciating such a small victory, but their search for Rosanna's parents was not going well, so he decided to enjoy whatever good news he could get. Pete, for his part, had taken up his parental duties without question. Billy never would have guessed in a million years that the same man who forgot to flush regularly could figure out how to take care of a living being. He was almost impressed.
"We should get going, if we miss the train again Rusty will lecture us for an hour."
Pete gave Rosanna's head a pat before grabbing his coat. The two went down the stairs and detoured through the kitchen to grab a bagel each before leaving the house, knowing Rosanna would be waiting for them whenever they got back.
Work was uneventful. Rusty had them test a new type of dog collar that was supposed to enhance obedience, but It didnt work on Billy so it was deemed a failure.
"Maybe we should try it on a dog?" Billy suggested while taking off the collar.
"Or Hank?" Pete asked.
"Hank will already do whatever hes told as long as you bribe him. What we need is someone who refuses to listen to directions and has a habit of doing nothing." Rusty thought aloud while making direct eye contact with White.
"Oh no, you're not getting me in a collar."
"Why not? Its not any worse than the usual outfits you wear."
"I have standards, thank you!"
"Billy tell your boyfriend to wear the collar."
"Well White, I wore it." Billy shrugged.
"And it didn't work! Besides, our shift is over anyway." White shrugged off his lab coat and made a B-line for the door.
"Dramatic!" Rusty said as he rolled his eyes. "How do you put up with him,Billy?"
"He has good qualities."
"He must be great in bed. I cant imagine why else-"
"Ok! That's enough for today! Goodnight Dr Venture."
Billy made his way to the door as well, not paying attention to whatever else Rusty had to say. He found White waiting for him in the lobby.
"Jeez, pally. Take long enough?" He joked.
"I have short legs, you know that."
"Well buy some roller skates or something, I don't have all day."
Billy didn't have a response to that, and so the pair began their walk to the subway. It was evening, and the setting sun caused everything to have an orange hue. Street lamps and signs were begining to light up, and the duo found themselves walking in silence for once, enjoying the trip. They were loading into the subway car when Billy pushed by an albino man with a hood obscuring his face. He did a double take, but the man had already left. He sat next to White and convinced himself the bad feeling he had was just in his head.
The sun had set by the time they reached home, and the street lamps were their only light as they walked up to the brownstone. They were greeted by the smell of stew upon entry, and Rose called them into the dining room for supper.
"How have you boys been?" She asked as she set their bowls.
"Ugh, you wouldn't believe what Rusty pulled today!" Billy started.
Noticing Billy getting carried away with conversation, White decided to ask Rodney about how things went at the brownstone while they were away.
"Oh, not too bad." He said in between bites. "Ive been through worse."
"The little girl is very lively. She kept us all busy until her uncle came to get her." Horace said nonchalantly.
White almost spit out his food. "Uncle?"
"Your brother, Laddie. Doesn't much look like you, but he has the same condition."
It took every ounce of his self control to not yell when he asked:
"Who was he with? What car was he in? Did he say he knew me?"
"There's no need to get uppity, Pete." Rodney said. "He said he was just gonna have her spend the night. He said his roommate has lots of toys she can play with."
Billy had taken notice of the other conversation and sat stone faced. White looked ready to burst.
"Billy, we need to go get her. Now."
"Mom, save our plates for us. We'll be back later."
Rose began to object but the duo ran out of the room before she could stop them.
"Oh dear, I hope they're back soon."
"What was that about?" Rodney asked to the room.
"I think we may have made a mistake, lads." Horace answered.
They used everything they had to get to St Clouds house, including a couple of favors Rusty owed them from years back that they exploited to get a free ride. Pete was never a violent man, but he swore he was going to rip the gate off its hinges if he was kept waiting outside any longer. Luckily for him, St Cloud let both of them in upon arrival. The house was huge and filled to the brim with pop culture memorabilia, but neither of them were interested tonight.
"Quizboy." St Cloud addressed from the top of his staircase. "Nice of you to visit. Did you lose something?"
"What have you done with her, St Cloud?" Billy yelled.
"What was that? I can't hear you."
"What have you done with her?"
"I still cannot hear you."
"Dude, move down a couple steps!"
St Cloud walked down about halfway down the stairs and tried again.
"Ok, can you hear me?"
"Yes." Pete groaned.
"Alright." St Cloud grunted a vocal warm up. "It has come to my attention that you have lost something very important. A little birdie in a speed suit told me that you decided to adopt, Quizboy."
"Oh for the love of- we didn't adopt!" White complaints fell on deaf ears.
"I know what you're planning. You think your attempt to have a successor would fly by me? A new little Quizgirl to uphold your mantle? I think not! Pei Wei, bring the child!"
As told, Pei Wei brought Rosanna. She looked the same, except now she was dressed in a hideous shade of royal purple as opposed to the pink onesie they left her in. "I was just thinking how nice it would be to have a successor... Or how nice it would be to steal yours from under you."
"In your dreams, St Cloud!"
"You can't just go around snatching babies!" Pete yelled.
"Then I will go through the agency you used and buy her from them."
"Ha! We didn't use an agency! She was left to us on our doorstep!" Billy inched towards the stairs.
"Hm, so the child isn't yours legally? Not much you can do to me then, is there?"
"Oh crap." Billy mumbled under his breathe. He began to look panicked, and White knew Billy couldn't work panicked.
"Yeah thats right, shes a street baby! We found her in a gutter!"
"White, what are you doing?" Billy whispered angrily. "He knows we didn't legally adopt her!"
"Hes a rich kid who has never gotten a taste of the real world. The guy has to be afraid of dirt." White whispered back. "If we convince him that shes dirty, he won't ever touch her again."
"That's a good plan" Billy whispered before turning back to St Cloud. "Yeah, she doesn't even have her shots yet!" He yelled.
"Oh, that's not good." St Cloud squirmed.
"Also, she's not potty trained, so I hope you're used to the smell!" White shouted.
"And she cries all night!" Billy added. The two were starting to have fun.
"Hm, I need my beauty sleep." St Cloud looked at the girl who was being held by Pei Wei. "She isn't Albino or anything either. Very average." He stared at her for a moment, thinking.
"You know what? Take her back. I can get a better one on Ebay." Pei Wei descended the stairs and handed Rosanna back to Billy as the duo cheered. They stood there for a moment before White asked, "Hey, can we get a ride back?"
