Chapter 2: The Noble Protector Returns
The entire Devil May Cry crew were shocked and worried. It's been already close the three months since Vergil and Dante came back from the Underworld and Dante hasn't opened his eyes. In fact, he looked even more pale, more sickly and his temperature kept rising. Nero worked with his father on the missions and taking care of Dante when the women went to their missions. Vergil pored through the library and researched, taking notes of symptoms and all. He was still puzzled. Nero placed a tray next to his father, who was still deep in study.
"Father, come on you have to eat." Nero said gently. Thankfully his father didn't fully fall into forgetfulness on hygiene or sleep. One time, he found his father asleep on his notes and woke up with his writing on his face. Nero managed to get a picture to save for Dante but it cost him a week sparring with his father! So worth it! Nero laughed.
Nero and Vergil went to check on Dante and stopped when a doctor was checking an i.v unit and catheter. Nero tried not to cry and Vergil clenched his fists at his sides. The one who always drove to fight for him, was lying in bed, white as the light sheets, not moving at all. Although breathing independently, which was a plus, Dante's temperature kept rising. Nero and Vergil went to work to cool off the Hunter. When the sheets were pulled back, Nero blinked.
"Uh, Father, I'm no biologist but….um things don't look….right…" Vergil blinked and walked over. He had to compose himself. Dante's body did look different although still masculine. It's starting to smell different….Vergil took note of his findings, re-tucked the Hunter into bed and Nero sat down next to him. He pulled out Shakespeare and began to read softly to Hunter. Vergil turned from the library and walked to a garden and sat down. He bowed his head and silently prayed. For the first time since his youth, Vergil felt powerless and helpless. He cried.
"Father?" The elder heard his son call. He gasped and wiped his tears. He wasn't keen on having his son seeing him cry. "Yes, I'm here."
Nero came into view holding an ancient looking book. He sat down with it and handed it to his father. He gasped as he recognized the tome.
"Where did you get this?" He asked softly as he caressed the cover. The tome was his father's!
"The Order found many artifacts from the family home. Grandfather's books, some of grandmother's jewelry, and some other memorabilia. Maybe we'll find the answer." Vergil sighed and nodded. "Thank you Nero."
The Spardas made their way to the Order and the members were more than happy to assist the new Lord. Vergil groaned at the stares aimed his way of worship. He hated the limelight as an adult. As child, he was praised because of his skill with the violin. Dante kept his secret talent hidden but Vergil knew it was singing.
As children, Vergil would call Dante his Nightingale. It got Dante mad with embarrassment while Sparda and Eva laughed and said it was cute. When Dante argued back, Vergil saw the look on their father's face. It was as if he was examining something…..then a look of relief, as he shrugged and saying boys will be boys. But when Dante kicked Vergil hard in the shin, causing the Heir to yelp, Sparda had to blink and look again. Vergil always wondered why….
Vergil came back with a start and began to search through the possessions . He didn't hear Nero calling to him, he just kept looking as in a trance. Finally his hands touched a wine red photo album. He remembered the book, for it was he who helped arrange it….
"Vergil, handle those with great care." Sparda warned his older son. With a nod a 6 year old Vergil reached over and picked up an envelope which had been hidden amongst the photos. He carefully opened it and was about to pull it out and read….He heard his father gasp and grab his hand, taking the envelope. He didn't get to see all he saw only a first name….Delmira. His father looked at him with sad eyes. "One day my son," Sparda said. "You will remember…." He replaced the envelope into the book and put it in a fire proof safe. "I promise, and when that day comes, I hope to be forgiven."
"Father?" Nero called as he placed a hand onto his father's shoulder. Vergil blinked and opened the book. He turned to the middle and found the envelope! He handled it with care and removed the certificates. These were original. He opened one, it was his birth certificate! He passed the envelope and certificate to Nero and slowly opened the 2nd one. There it was: Delmira Eva Sparda. I have a sister!
"Father, your middle name is Abraxas?"
"Yes."
"So your initials spell VAS. Heh no wonder I kicked your…." Nero gulped at his father's look. Then he smirked. "You have an A middle name too. Alastor. So your initials spell NAS. Guess I'm not the only ass." Nero stammered as his father read. But as soon as he was about to say something, screams erupted from outside! Father and son looked at each other then set their findings down carefully before running to see what was wrong. Demons were running rampant and terrorizing the people. Nero un unsheathed Red Queen, revving her up while his father unsheathed Yamato. With a nod, they started to slay the demons.
Kyrie was in the market plaza with three small children, shopping for food when a crowd of demons saw them. Kyrie stood in front of the children protectively but closed her eyes.
Bang! Bang! Slash! She heard and Kyrie opened her eyes and gasped. Before her, dressed in Dante's red and black Hunter's gear, was a handsome looking woman with long white hair reaching her waist. She held a smoking Ivory and a wicked looking black sword with a red jewel on the pommel. Her eyes were slowly glowing red and Kyrie also saw that the woman had fangs! A demoness….but she seems familiar. The strange woman looked at her for a moment before smiling warmly and winking before launching herself to slaughter all the demons, making a clear path for Kyrie and the children. Kyrie gasped as she recognized the woman. Mr…Dante?
Ok let me know what you think.
