AN: I changed the title for the story. As only one version is allowed to live on the site, I have deleted and reuploaded the story. If you read it, I'd love a review. If you are interested in reading more, I could use a beta. I'm posting the first 5-6 chapters today. The rest should be added throughout the week or month.
Cupid's Imprint
"Hey Katie, wait up," I called. She stopped. Like me, Katie was new to the school, and we'd become friends. She had short light brown hair and beautiful hazel eyes. I know I couldn't be the only one in school who thought she was beautiful. I was just the only one to brave enough to admit it. She is also very smart, and always let me see her notes. In fact, this was why I was looking for her.
"Hey Seth, how are you? Ready for the quiz in geology?"
"I'm fine." I said, "and I think so."
"How are you?" I replied.
"I'm fine. I just have a bit of a headache," she said, "Let me guess- you want to look at my notes in assembly.
"Sorry about the headache. But thanks for letting me look at the notes. It pays to be friends with someone brilliant and hard working."
"Thanks for the compliment. You must really need my notes," Katie. "You aren't so bad yourself."
As we walked down the hall, I noticed faint salty aroma in the air. I sniffed at the air wondering where this was coming from, but then I realize it is coming from Katie. Katie smells wonderful- a mixture of honeysuckle, ink, fresh grass, and a faint cucumber aroma from the soap she uses. But this aroma is strange. It reminds me of the black clouds that come in suddenly on a sunny day.
"Katie, are you feeling ok?" I asked.
"Fine, why" she replied.
Right at that moment, the smell got stronger. Her eyes begin to lose focus. She began to fall- like a tree struck by lightening. I jumped in front of her and eased her down to the floor. Thank goodness my reflexes remain strong when I'm in human form.
"Katie, wake up." I said. She'd fallen on top of me, her head in my lap. I pushed her into a sitting position, leaning her head against the lockers. Her eyes flickered open. In that one instant, my world changed. Suddenly, I knew that our lives were now intertwined. Her eyes are like a magnet pulling me in like a piece of iron. She is the north star. She was the sun and I am the earth. And in that moment, I know that wherever she goes, I will follow. But now, I just have to keep her safe.
"Katie, are you ok?" I asked.
"I'm fine, I just fainted" said Katie, 'Are you ok? You are the one with a strange look in your eyes."
"Yes, fine," I replied
She tried to get up. I put my arms on her shoulders to keep her down.
"I'm fine", said Katie, "really I am."
"No, you aren't!" I said, "People who are fine don't faint. I'm calling Uncle Carlisle now." I pulled out my phone. I looked up and saw that a crowd had gathered to see what happened.
Mr. Miles, the vice principal, rushes over. He is on the phone- probably either calling Katie's parents or 911. He wouldn't get Katie's parents as they are out of town and she is staying with us.
"I'm fine," said Katie, "really I am. I just fainted, no reason to freak out."
"Katie, what happened?" asked Mr. Miles
"She fainted." I said
"I'm fine" said Katie
"I've called 911. I want you to get this checked out," said Mr. Miles," And as for the rest of you, aren't you supposed to be in class."
The other students dispersed, but I didn't move. After all, Katie is my best friend. I have no intention of leaving her or going to class until this gets checked out. Something is going on, but I don't know what. The ambulance came very quickly- racing into the building with a stretcher and bags full of things.
"Hi, can you tell me what happened?" asked the EMT as he checked Katie.
"I just fainted. I'm FINE. It is just low blood pressure." Said Katie
"That may be the case, but I still want you to get checked out." Said the EMT
"It doesn't look like I'm getting out of this one, am I?" said Katie
"Is it alright if Seth comes too?" asked Katie
"Of course, I'll come," said Seth
"It is against protocol to take people unless they are next of kin. And you aren't an adult"
"I want him to come," said Katie
"Is she your girlfriend?" asked one of the EMTs
"Yes," I said. She's staying with my family while her parents are out of town. Dr. Carlisle Cullen is my uncle. I'm sure he'd want me to make sure she is ok." I used a little bit of wolf magic- mine is kind of like puppy eyes on steroids in terms of convincing people. But I think the mention of Dr Cullen sealed the deal.
While Seth argued with one EMT, the other put an IV line in Katie. The funny thing is that I could almost feel the tiny pin prick as if it were my arm. I kept myself calm. I know that the IV is going to help her, but I still don't like it.
"Fred, just let him come. If he is a relation to Dr. Cullen, arguing is pointless anyway."
I climbed in the back of the ambulance and took a seat next to Katie.
"Hey, isn't this a lot better than geology", remarked Katie.
"Thank goodness I have an A in that class. And I know you'd rather be in geology and algebra than on your way to the hospital."
"But you have to admit that a ride in the ambulance is kind of cool. I can't wait to tell Ian about it." I said.
