Chapter 5: Puppy to the Rescue
"Hey, Katie, ready to see your new puppy?" asked Jacob
"Sure," said Katie
"Here they are," said Jacob, opening the door to the garage. The puppies were in a playpen.
I counted nine little balls of fur. Four black, three golden, and one chocolate. I'm struck by the fact that I can already hear their thoughts. Three are a asleep and dreaming of chasing things. One black puppy starts to play with my shoelace.
"I'm hungry" said one.
Stop fighting. I have enough milk for all of you. said Mother
I'm faster than you! said a golden ball of fur.
Jacob, can you hear the puppies, too? I asked,.
Yes. He replied
Cool! This is going to make training the dog so much easier. I said.
"As you can see, there are eight pups. But there are three that I think would be a good match for you. I know they are young, but you I tested them all yesterday. Here, look at this one," said Jacob, handing her a brown ball of fur.
Katie cradled him to her chest. "Hi, you are adorable," said Katie
"That one is mine," said a voice. Renesmee ran over to us.
"Katie, this is Renesmee or Nessie" I said
"The brown one is going to be my puppy one day."
Katie handed him back to Nessie. Then she picked up a little black ball of fur.
Hello. I want to be held. Smell good. said a small black puppy.
I picked up the black puppy and handed her to Katie.
"Yes, that one is full of energy. She is one of the leaders- always pushing the others around. But she is super sweet and smart. She's got the most enthusiastic personality. She'll be a good one," said Jacob
Nice and warm. thought the puppy. You smell nice
"You said you tested them. How do you do it? What do you look for?" asked Katie
"Let me show you. Follow me," said Jacob
He put the puppy down on the floor. She explored for a minute. Then, he dropped a dish. The puppy jumped back at the sound, but then went to investigate the bowl.
"Let's see if she likes to retrieve," said Jacob, throwing a small soft toy. "And yes, she does."
I knew she did. I'd been reading her thoughts. She wanted the toy. But she really wanted treats.
"Well, that's it. I think she will be great dog. I know it isn't an extensive test, but she is only seven weeks old," said Jacob. "She'll need a lot more training to be a service dog, but I think we can do it. I'd want to keep here for at least another two weeks. Then we can go from there," said Jacob
"That sounds like a great plan. Would she stay here all the time until she is fully trained? Or come with me?" asked Katie
"I think we can do a blended thing. If you want, she can stay, and I can get her house trained and then she can go with you and we can all work together to train her,"said Jacob
"I'll help, too," I said, "If you need a ride over here or anything."
"That would be great," said Katie
"How much does this dog cost? I know they can be really expensive," said Katie
"The puppies are nine hundred. But, if you will help me train it for you, you can have her for four hundred."
"Wonderful," said Katie
Katie's happy that I can feel it, too. I wonder if this is part of the imprinting thing- I guess you feel their strong emotions- like joy or fear or pain, through the connection.
"Now all we need is a name" said Katie
"Ryder," said Nessie
"No, and she's a girl."
"How about Peppa? Zuma or Belle, or Dora?" said Nessie
"Dora is a great name," said Katie
"I like Dora," said the puppy.
I like it! Thought the puppy. I like her.
"Nice try, Jacob. Dora it is! Said Katie
"I didn't say a thing," said Jacob
"I know you are just messing around. Pretending to speak for the puppy," she said.
Jacob, has a dog ever spoken to anyone who wasn't a wolf? Does wolf telepathy apply to imprints?
I haven't heard of it before, but I guess so. This isn't good. There is no way you can keep things a secret from her for much longer.
"yes, that's exactly what Jake was doing," I said, "He just thinks that puppy really likes you."
I know. I'm telling her about the imprint thing. I can't tell about the wolf thing yet.
"Well, it looks like you found the right puppy. And Dora is a good name; it means gift in Greek," said Jacob.
"cool" said Katie as the puppy started to climb ovder her shoulder.
"It also works because she's an explorer," said Nessie.
"You can come over every day to bond and start training," said Jacob, "Are you going to the meeting/ bonfire later?
"Definitely," said Seth
"I didn't know there was a bonfire tonight," said Katie
"Yes, it's no big deal. It's just dinner and fire on the beach," I said
"You just want to explore, don't you? I think that makes the name even more appropriate," said Katie.
I couldn't help smiling. This puppy is perfect. And she seems to like me. I slowly lowered her back into the playpen.
"She is a great choice. She already knows how to get people to do things." I said
I can't believe it. I've never seen one this young communicate like that", said Jacob
"This girl is going to be amazing" said Katie.
Our small talk was interrupted by a ping. Seth pulled out his phone. "Mom needs me to stop at the store and pick up some things for tonight."
"What are we having?" asked Jake. Jacob loves food- particularly, he loves Mom's food.
"She gave me a list. I'm adding the fixings for s'mores"
"Yay" said Nessie.
