Chapter 6: The Bonfire
"Seth, can you help fill the coolers with ice?" asked Mrs. Sue
"Katie, take this bowl of potato salad over to the table."
The big picnic table outside was laden with food- baked beans, potato salad, fruit, chips, smoked fish, hamburger, and hot dog buns. The coolers were full of delicious cold drinks. There is enough food to feed an army. Seth and Jacob are setting up the fire on the beach.
"These will be perfect for roasting marshmallows" said Ian as held up two coat hangers he'd undone.
"Yes," said Katie, "I love roasting marshmallows. How do you like your marshmallows? I like mine a little done. They are really good with graham crackers and chocolate."
"Yes, they're awesome. Mom says I can have as many as I want if I behave. But I always behave," said Ian.
"I know. You're just a perfect angel," said Katie
"Sorry, Ian, but I can see that your horns are tilting that halo on your head," said Seth
The sun started to set over the water, turning the sky orange and pink. "Red sky at night, sailors delight. Red sky at morning, sailors take warning," said Katie
"I love the sunset," I said, putting my arm around Katie shoulder. She leaned back to me and we watched the sun sink down into the sea. The moment was perfect. I turned my head and kissed Katie on the cheek. She leaned back against me and we watched the water for a minute. For a moment, the world is perfect.
"Seth, Katie, time for dinner," said Sue.
Sam said grace. Everyone fell in line to fill their plates with some of the amazing food- there is even more on the table now than there was. In addition to the hamburgers, baked bean, potato salad, there was corn salad, watermelon, chocolate cake. It is all wonderful. Sam and Jacob even managed to get along. Things have settled between the two packs since Renesmee came along. I'm just glad to see that both are in good moods. It will make things easier when I have to talk about Katie.
The one thing I'm really worried about is Katie. I'd imprinted on her, but I couldn't even tell her quite yet. She wasn't a member of the tribe. The whole turning into a wolf thing is still new. In fact, there are now more members of the tribe who turn into wolves than ever. I know some of this is because the Cullen's, the vampire clan, has settled here. It does make life interesting. In wolf form, there are no secrets within a pack. Jacob and Leah can see everything in my head, but Sam can't because I'm not in his pack.
After everyone had finished eating, Sam and Jacob began the meeting. There was the usual storytelling, shared by both leaders. Then the usual business. I kind of zone out for a while.
"Who wants marshmallows?" asked Jacob
Everyone grabbed a stick and a marshmallow. Mom handed out chocolate and graham crackers.
"I like mine extra toasted" said Will
"I like mine on fire" I said, blowing the hot marshmallow out.
"Katie," aske Mrs. Sue, "Can you help me carry the dishes and round up the kids? It's getting late and this part of the meeting is only for the tribe. I promised Ian twenty minutes of screen time before .bed."
"Sure," said Kate
Katie's POV
"Katie, watch Dinosaur Train with me," said Ian.
"Sure, I like Dinosaur Train," said Katie. The funny thing was she did like Dinosaur Train. In the spirit of observation, Katie noticed the huge painting of an Indian- a Quileute Elder- and a huge dog over the mantlepiece. There were also a couple of wolf figurines acting as book ends. The dog in the portrait was huge- bigger than any domestic dog- maybe it was a hybrid.
"Ian, do you know what kind of dog is in that picture?" asked Katie
"That's Grandpa Ephraim Black and his wolf," said Ian
"Wait, your grandfather had a wolf. He must have tamed it somehow. That is cool, maybe that is where Jacob gets the ability to train dogs."
"I don't know if it was tame," said Ian. " I just know it is his wolf. I named it Tonka. Will you read me a story?"
"Sure," said Kate, following him upstairs, " why do I think you are stalling and don't want to go to bed.?"
"Because I am." He replied.
"At least you are truthful. What story would you like to read?" asked Katie
"How about this one? Make Way for Ducklings.
"One of my favorites, said Katie, as she opened the book and began reading. She could see Ian's eyelids getting heavy, but he fought sleep. He didn't want to miss out on anything. He insisted that I read him one chapter of his Magic Treehouse book. He fell asleep as I finished the chapter. I went to close the blinds.
I looked out and found the most amazing view of the moon rising above the water in a sea of stars. Now this is the perfect view. It really is. For some reason, the moment made me reflect on the events of the past few days. I've known Seth and the Blacks for most of my life. Our parents were friends and Jacob used to be one of John's best friends. This is the reason I'm staying with them while my parents are abroad. But something between us is changing. Yesterday, when I came to after fainting, there was this strange energy between us and since then I've felt this unusual pull towards him. I can't believe I kissed him! At least he seemed to like it. I hope he doesn't think I'm too forward.
As I scanned the horizon, something caught my eye. I could see the fires, but there were two groups of the largest wolves I've ever seen around them. Where did everyone go? Wolves don't stand so nicely. What on earth is going on here? Are those legends true? Is Seth a wolf?
