ACT 2 - SCENE SET 3

INT. LANSING MICHIGAN POLICE DEPARTMENT BUILDING - 3.1

START SCENE

Prentiss: If he's going to leave the state, and we don't have the slightest clue as to who this guy is-how are we going to find him?

Rossi: We don't

Morgan: You mean?

Hotch: We have to wait for him to strike again

The team's (minus rossi and hotch) jaws dropped

Prentiss: We have to let possibly a whole family DIE?

Hotch nodded glumly

Hotch: Garcia, did you find anything?

Garcia: No nothing yet- Oh my god-

Hotch: What is it?

Garcia: So I set up an alert on VICAP to be notified the minute a similar crime happened and -

Hotch: Already?

Garcia, tearfully: mmhmm. The uh, Bellevues of Chicago.

Rossi: He already got to Illinois? Is that even possible?

Reid: It's only about 3 and a half hours away. It's possible.

Hotch: Garcia, anything about this family that connects them to either of the Kemper Families?

Garcia: Not to the Kempers- but i did find something really interesting.

Hotch: What?

Garcia: Bellevue- that's a fake name

Morgan: Baby girl, what do you mean?

Garcia: I mean, they made it up in the 80s and for good reason, too.

Hotch: What's the reason?

Garcia: Because before it was Bellevue- it was Bundy.

Prentiss: As in Ted Bundy?

Garcia: Mmhmm, the one and only. Samuel Bellevue formerly Bundy is a third cousin or so of Bundy.

Reid: Garcia, what did the note say?

Garcia: Uhhh…"I've helped again".. Why, does that mean something?

Reid stood up an paced for a moment

Morgan: Come on pretty boy I can almost hear that big brain of yours. Spill it,

Reid: Kemper.

The teams eye began to slowly widen in realization

Reid: Garcia- did the Kemper family have any connection to the Edmund Kemper- a serial killer from the mid 60s to 70s?

Garcia: Oh my goodness- how did I miss this- stupid, stupid stupid.

Hotch: Garcia-

Garcia: Oh right- yes- again, distant cousins but I guess they kept the name.

Rossi: So he's killing the relatives of serial killers

Reid: "I'm helping" "I fixed Michigan. On to the next""I've helped again". He's not a family annihilator- he's a vigilante

Hotch: He's trying to rid the world of serial killer genetics.

Rossi: But by doing that- he's becoming a serial killer himself

Prentiss: Then that's his endgame. He's going to kill his family.

Reid: and himself

Prentiss sighed.

Morgan: But if we don't know who this guy is, I mean-?

Hotch: Garcia, track down the plates of everyone who passed through tolls from Lansing to Chicago in the last six hours

Garcia: Sir, that's going to be a HUGE list- It's gonna take a while to even get toll footage

Hotch: I figured as much.

Prentiss: what are we going to do in the meantime?

Rossi: Isn't it obvious? We're gonna a trip to the windy city

INT. JJ'S HOSPITAL ROOM - 3.2

START SCENE

JJ was devastated. She didn't regret her son or Will, but when she was alone with her thoughts and she allowed herself to think about the what ifs- she wondered what could have been. What if she'd confronted Emily about her feelings all those years ago?

What if she had ever allowed herself to entertain those fantasies? She thought about that first day they met. Her hair was different then- shorter, slick start with a middle part.

She loved her hair like that. Sometimes when Emily's bangs got too long, she couldn't quite see her eyes as well. She hated that, not being able to see those big brown eyes.

If she'd been a braver woman, JJ should have told her then how she felt. Because she knew. On that first day, she knew.

Oh, what if? She was suddenly snapped out of her thoughts by someone saying her name.

NURSE: Agent Jareau?

JJ, jumpily: Hm?

NURSE: I asked if you needed anything?

JJ: Oh, uh… no, no I'm fine

NURSE: You sure?

JJ nodded and smiled friendly at the nurse as she exited
