Finding Something True

The Date-Part 1

Saturday, March 9, 1991-7:25 P.M.

McCallister House-Foyer

Winnetka, Illinois

(Christine's PoV:)

"Mom, thanks for all the help you and the twins gave me, in getting ready for the date I have with William tonight. Mom, you did such a great job, with fixing my hair and makeup. Megan and Linnie, you both did a wonderful job, helping me do my nails and putting on my stockings," I say to Mom and the twins.

I stand in front of the large mirror in the foyer, making sure the black dress, matching heels, and the gold necklace Mom picked out for me to wear on my date with William are perfect.

Mom smiles. "It's no problem, Christine. It was a pleasure, helping you get ready for your date with William, pumpkin," She gives me a reassuring pat on the back, as she turns her attention to my younger sisters.

"Megan, Linnie, don't you have homework to do?" she asks the both of them. The twins are peeking through the window, waiting for William to arrive.

"The only homework we both have, is to do a Family Tree, and we need your help with that, Mom," Linnie replies.

"Plus, we want to see how cute Christine's date is!" Megan chimes in, swooning. Mom and I just shake our heads, smiling, as Dad enters the room. Dad is just getting back from driving Buzz and Jeff to their respective jobs at the North Leaf Mall.

"Christine, you look very beautiful, just like your Mom, when we went out on our first date all those years ago, back in college…" Dad says, grinning, as he kisses Mom on the cheek.

"Thanks, Dad," I blush.

Dad and I had a heart-to-heart talk, when I arrived earlier today. He apologized about his behavior two nights ago. Dad admitted that he was scared about losing me again. I reassured him that's not going to happen, and not to worry.

Kevin, who's sitting on the stairs, has been giving me the cold shoulder and ignoring me, whenever I try talking to him. Mom thinks Kevin is just doing it for attention, and for me not to worry. Kevin just stares at me, his eyes void of emotion.

"Hey, a car just pulled into the front driveway, and they just knocked over the lawn jockey!" Linnie laughs, bringing me out of my thoughts about Kevin.

"Forget that, Linnie—a cute hunk has just climbed out of the car, and is now walking up the path to the front door, carrying a dozen roses," Megan swoons. "Oh, Christine, I envy you!"

Mom smiles. "I bet that's William, Christine,"

"Yeah, William…" I smile, dreamily, the butterflies flaring up in my stomach. I don't notice the nasty glare Kevin is sending my way.

"Where's Fred?" Dad asks, knowing Fred isn't really fond of William.

"I put him upstairs in our room," Mom replies. "Speaking of which… Megan, Kevin, Linnie, upstairs, now. I want to make sure Christine's date has a good first impression."

"We want to see Christine's date up close!" the twins whine in protest, as the anger flares in Kevin.

"No, Christine's already nervous, as it is. She doesn't need you two's teenage hormones making a scene, so upstairs, now," Mom points.

The twins comply, as they sourly go upstairs, just as William knocks on the door. Mom and Dad stand next to the stairs, beaming. Unknown to all of us, Kevin, Linnie, and Megan are still watching from top of the stairs. I happily answer the door, wondering why he didn't use the doorbell.

"Hi, William," I greet, opening the door. My heart is racing, as I'm unable to keep my eyes off his fine-looking body. He's all dressed up in a green dress shirt, with a matching striped tie, brown slacks, brown dress shoes, and a brown sports coat.

"Hi, Christine. You look lovely tonight, especially in that outfit," he compliments, making me blush. "Here, I brought you some fresh blue and white roses, and a vase to put them in."

"You look handsome yourself, William. The roses look beautiful. Thank you. Why don't you come in and say 'hi' to my parents?" I invite him in, smiling, taking the roses and giving them a nice sniff. "They smell pretty," I say, showing them to Mom.

"Hello, Mister and Missus McCallister," William shyly greets, shaking Dad's hand. "Sorry about hitting your statue. I didn't see it, while pulling in."

I finally notice Kevin and the twins watching everything from the top of the stairs. Kevin is rolling his eyes, scowling, while the twins are whispering and drooling.

"Hello, William," Mom beams, taking our picture.

"That's all right, William. You're not the first person, and you won't be the last to hit that old statue. If it makes you feel any better, Christine knocked it over herself, when she arrived today. It must be the love bug, making her brain all fuzzy," Dad teases, to my embarrassment. Mom elbows Dad hard in the stomach to shut him up.

"I hope you both have a fun evening. It was nice seeing you, as always, William," Mom says, as if she's rushing us to leave. She's probably scared Dad will spoil the moment, with another foot-in-the-mouth remark. "Maybe we can have you over for dinner, sometime?" Mom beams.

"We will, Mister and Missus McCallsiter," William speaks, politely. My attention is fully focused on William, as we head for the front door.

"Just make sure you both use protection, if you're planning to sow some wild oats tonight, as my Grandpa used to call it," Dad teases again, causing Mom to get pissed at him. It's as if he's doing it on purpose… I don't want to know why. Kevin also laughs at Dad's comment.

"Peter, will you stop?!" Mom snaps, her cheeks flaring red in anger. She balls up her fist and bops Dad upside the head, causing him to yelp in pain.

"Oh my god! Dad!" I protest, looking embarrassed.

I quickly drag William out the door, but not before seeing Kevin giving me the middle finger. I don't understand why he's acting like this, but after that nasty gesture, he's going to have an angry sister to deal with, once my date is over. I glare at him, feeling hurt. I'm sure Kevin's going to be in trouble with Mom and Dad, too, since the twins saw it, as well. Their expressions of shock mean Kevin is going to get ratted out soon…
