CHAPTER FOUR
A large grinding noise shook the Glade as the openings closed, the openings that Minho called "Doors". After that, Minho led them back to the Homestead. He turned to the door and said, "I'll go get you shanks some food." before leaving. Grey sat down where Minho put him, looking at the rest of them, his throat dry as a bone. Ryan was the first to speak after that. "So you and that other guy came up here together?"
Grey shook his head no. "I came up here by myself. Minho came before me."
"Must've been a lonely trip." Wyatt remarked.
"Not lonely. More confusing and scary. Do you guys remember anything?"
Madison spoke this time. "No. We were all in the lift together. We quickly figured out our names and we also quickly realized we didn't remember anything. Or, we remembered the basics. How to walk. How to talk. How to eat, drink. You get the point."
Minho chose that moment to come barging in, arms full with sandwiches, apples, and six metal cups of water. He dished out the food, sitting down on his own sleeping bag as he tore into a sandwich. "Eat up shuck-faces."
Grey ignored the obvious insult and took a bite into the sandwich. The flavours of ham and cheese filled his mouth and he kept eating, ravenous. He didn't stop until he finished his sandwich, gulping down the cup of water before starting on his apple. Within two minutes, he had chomped down on the apple until it was a stubby core only to look around and see everyone else except for Minho still eating their sandwich.
Minho chuckled as he finished his apple. "How long has it been since you've seen food?"
"I don't know, honestly. It's not like I'd remember."
"Yeah, nobody remembers nothing when they come up the box hole. Don't remind us."
"I'll remember that." Wyatt laughed as he said that, finishing his sandwich.
Minho cleaned up and wiped his hands clean. "Alright shanks. It's night time. My advice is that you never want to find yourself out there-" he pointed out the window to the now closed Doors "-during the night. Nobody ever survives a night out in the Maze." Minho looked doubtful as he said that last line.
"The Maze?" Madison asked, puzzled.
Quickly, Grey summed up what Minho told him, explaining the Maze and what Minho did. Minho nodded his head as Grey spoke, letting him tell the story. When Grey finished, Minho leaned against the wall. "Seems like you've been paying attention."
Grey shrugged and lay down on his sleeping bag. The others started talking quietly again as Grey slowly drifted off to sleep.
They never realized that the Box went back down the Box Hole.
