AN: Hey!
I'm sorry I had to split this episode into three parts instead of two. But here's the last part!
DISCLAIMER: MERLIN ISN'T MINE. ONLY ELIZABETH MALINOR.
Enjoy!
I ran to Gaius's chambers. Morgana just told me that Merlin tried to take the fall for Gwen. God, this guy was such an idiot!
I ran inside, not bothering to knock. "Are you stupid?" Merlin and Gaius instantly turned around. "What was taking the fall for Gwen gonna do?"
"Save her from execution!" Merlin said back.
"Fat lot of good it did! The best way to help Gwen is to find out what's causing the disease!"
"Well, whatever it is, one things for sure, Arthur's not going to find it. He thinks he is so sharp, that even when I told him I was a wizard, he still couldn't see it." Merlin said.
"Contrary to Uther's belief, finding a wizard isn't the easiest thing to spot." I told him.
"Maybe I should go around wearing a pointy hat?" Merlin suggested.
"I don't think you'll find one big enough." Gaius said.
"Besides," I jumped in. "I think your scarf is better."
Merlin looked down to his scarf and blushed. "Thanks."
"Anyway, forget that. If we want to save Gwen, we need to find out what's contaminating the water." Gaius said, tossing a bag to Merlin.
I went to follow them, when Merlin stoped me. "What're you doing?"
"I'm coming with you. Gwen is one of my very best friends, and I'm not going to stand by and let her be executed. Let's go." I said, grabbing his arm and following Gaius.
We walked to a door that's under the castle, and Gaius opened it with a key. We followed him through the door, and are engulfed by darkness.
"The water from here supplies the whole town. Take a sample." Gaius instructed Merlin.
Merlin did so. "Let's take it back and examine it."
As we turned to leave, the Afanc popped out of the water. Merlin instinctively pushed me behind him. "What the hell was that?"
Gaius took Merlin's arm, Merlin grabbed my hand, and we ran out of there. We went back to Gaius's chambers, who proceeded to take out a book, and flip through the pages. He stopped on a page. "Here. It was an Afanc."
"An...a what?" Merlin asked, confused.
"A beast born of clay, and conjured up only by the most powerful sorcerer. Now we have to find a way to defeat it. But where?" Gaius said, turning back to the bookshelf.
"That could take days. Gwen'll be dead by then." Merlin insisted.
"Have you got a better idea?" Gaius asked.
While Merlin went to see Gwen, I went to Kilgarrah. I managed to sneak past the guards, and into the cave. This time, I grabbed a torch to give light. "Hello?" I called. "I need help!"
The Dragon flew down, and settled on his rock. "What is it, young Dimension Traveller?"
"All these things, that I know. I know everything that is going to happen, I know it does. Do I do anything to stop it?" I asked.
Kilgharrah thought for a second. "You were brought here, because of your knowledge. Your knowledge is to help the young Warlock and the Once and Future King."
"So you're saying that I should do something." I summarized.
"Some information is to be used, others kept hidden."
"So what are you saying?" I asked, completely frustrated.
"I am saying to use your information wisely." He said, flying off.
"Hey! Wait! Don't go! WAIT!" I shouted. I screamed in frustration. I always complained about Merlin going to see this Dragon. I really needed to take my own advice.
I ran to Gaius's chambers. I had to know if he and Merlin had figured anything more out. I didn't bother knocking, just barging through the door.
"Have you found anything yet?" I asked frantically.
Merlin and Gaius stopped looking for a book. "I think I've found something. I just need the book..." Merlin said.
"You going to tell me which one?" Gaius asked.
"A book on elements." he said.
"Elements?" Gaius repeated.
Merlin nodded. "Yes. Which one would I find them in?"
"Well, most of them. The study of base elements is at the very heart of the scientific process." Gaius said, taking a book out.
"But how would they help me kill the Afanc?" Merlin wondered.
"Well, the Afanc is a creature made from earth and water. That's two of the four base elements." Gaius explained.
"What about the other two?" Merlin said.
"Maybe they'll destroy it. Fire. Wind and fire. Those are the other two elements." I said.
Merlin looked at me surprised. "How do you know?"
I smirked. "Well, I am a well educated young woman, Merlin."
"How did you find this out?" Gaius asked.
"Erm...I just knew, you know? One of my powers." Merlin put up.
"What else do your powers tell you?" I joked.
"That I am only one side of a coin. The brighter side, obviously." he stated.
"And who's the other side?" Gaius askd.
"I think that might be Arthur. And there's one more person that's connected somehow." Merlin said.
I scrunched my eyebrows. "What? Who?" Was that person me?
Merlin didn't get the chance to explain, because Morgana ran in. "They're bringing forward the execution. We have to prove Gwen's innocence."
"We're trying." Gaius insisted.
Morgana walked to stand next to me, and hooksd her arm through mine. "Please, just tell me what we can do to help." I nodded.
"We need Arthur." Merlin explained.
"Arthur?" Morgana asked in confusion.
"There's a monster, an Afanc, in the water supply. That's what's causing the plague." Merlin told her.
"Well, we must tell Uther." Morgana insisted.
I shook my head at her. "The Afanc's from magic. Telling Uther wouldn't solve anything, he'd just say that Gwen conjured it."
"So what are we to do?" Morgana asked.
"We need to destroy it. Then the plague will stop and Uther may see sense." Merlin said.
Morgana dawned with realization. "And that's why you need Arthur."
"He's our best chance. But he's not going to want to disobey the King." Merlin pointed out.
Morgana nodded. "Leave that to me."
Arthur followed Morgana and I into the Square, where Merlin met us. Arthur drew his sword, lit a torch, and we walked in. I grabbed another torch for good measure.
"You'd better be right about this, Merlin." Arthur said to him.
There was a low growl. Morgana gasped, and I jumped. Hey, any rational person would have.
"You two should stay here." Arthur told us.
I shook. my head. "We're coming with you."
"No."
Morgana cocked her head to the side and smirked. "Scared we'll show you up?"
"Father will slam us all in chains if he knew I'd endangered the both of you."
"Well it's a good thing he doesn't know then." I said.
"I'm telling you, Elizabeth, Morgana, turn back. You could get hurt." Arthur insisted.
Really? Him and Uther were pretty much the only ones that called me by my full name. "You could too...if you don't get out of my way." I said, walking in front of Arthur, trying not to laugh at the look on Merlin's face. Morgana though, didn't care and did laugh.
We started walking farther into the tunnel. "How are we going to find it?"
"I just hope we find it before it finds us." Merlin said.
Arthur heard something, and spun around. "Stop."
"What?" Merlin asked.
"It's just a shadow." Arthur said, brushing it off.
We kept walking. I knew the Afanc was creeping behind us, so I moved closer to Merlin. You know, because he was the one with the magic? Yeah, that was definitely it.
We got to the water source. "Spread out." Arthur instructed.
We split up. I heard the Afanc growl, and Morgana and I ran to where Arthur was. "What is it? Are you okay?" I asked.
Arthur nodded. "Yeah."
Merlin joined us. "Did you see it?"
"Yes." Arthur nodded.
"What did it look like?" he asked.
"It, it's quick." Arthur answered.
The Afanc came in front of me, and I shrieked. Hey! This was the scariest thing I'd ever seen! And I used to live in the 21 century, we had impressive animation skills.
Arthur pushed me behind him and into Merlin's arms, and swiped at it, but it disappeared again. "Where is it?" He asked.
"I think it's gone this way!" Merlin yelled.
Arthur, Morgana and I followed him. The Afanc crept around the corner, and came into view. Arthur made a move to stab it, and it knocked his sword out of his hand. The Afanc came closer to me, and I kept my torch in front of me. It knocked my torch out of my hand. Arthur distracted the Afanc with his torch, and I ran to Merlin, who pushed me behind him, where Morgana was too. I grabbed her hand, and she squeezed back tightly. Arthur began to circle the Afanc.
"Arthur, use the torch!" Merlin yelled to him.
Arthur swung the torch at it, and Merlin muttered, "Lyfte ic þe in balwen ac forhienan."
His incantation blew flames into the Afanc, blowing it up.
Third person's POV...
Deep in the cave of Nimueh, she watched the situation that had unfolded in her stone basin.
"Merlin." She hissed. "Mah!" She splashed the water in anger.
In his throne room, Uther laughed over some parchments with his advisors. "It's very good." He told them.
The court physician walked in. "Good news, Sire. There are no new deaths, and those that are sick are recovering."
Uther nodded. "Good. Strange, I've never heard of an Afanc before." he said, sipping from his goblet.
"It's conjured from clay by powerful magic. The type that can only be invoked by an ancient sorcerer." Uther's face turned grave as he lowered his goblet. "One that has the power to mirror the spirit of life. I found this at the water source." The old physician held up a cracked egg shell. "It bears the mark of Nimueh." He flipped the shell over, showing the King the Mark. "We must be vigilant, Sire."
"Will I never be rid of her?" Uther asked, disbelieving.
"Sire." Gaius tried.
"Leave me!" The King commanded, and everyone in the room complied as he sat on his throne to ponder what this could mean in the future.
Elizabeth's POV...
In the dungeons, some guards opened Gwen's cell. Me, Morgana, Merlin, and Gwen's father all walked in. Well, Tom ran in, and gathered Gwen into a hug. Merlin and I smiled at the love between the two.
Gwen reached forward and grabbed my hand. "Thank you!"
I laughed. "Don't thank me." I pointed to Merlin. "It was more Merlin."
Gwen looked genuinely surprised. "Really?"
Morgana smiled and nodded. "He's the real hero here."
"I don't know what to say." Gwen told him.
Merlin smiled really big. "I didn't do anything. Really."
"I'm- I'm grateful to you all. Come on, Gwen." Tom said, taking Gwen's hand and leaving.
Merlin moved to leave too, but Morgana called him back. "Merlin. I wanted you to know, your secret's safe with me."
I tried not to laugh at the look on Merlin's face, but it's really more of the fact that I knew what came after.
"My secret?" Merlin asked, stammering a little.
"Merlin, don't pretend. I know what you did." Morgana said, nodding her head.
"You do?" Merlin said, unbelieving.
"I saw it with my own eyes." She grabbed my hand. "We both did."
Merlin looked from Morgana to me. Poor boy must be so confused, because I already knew his 'secret'. Well, his real one at least. "You did?"
"I understand why you don't anyone to know." Morgana explained.
"Well, obviously." Merlin said, in somewhat relief.
"But we won't tell anyone." It's almost scary, how close Morgana and I were. We pretty much had the same thought process. "You don't mind us talking to you about it?"
"Er...no. I, I, it's, er...you have no idea how hard it is to keep this hidden." He said, sighing.
"Well, you can continue to deny it, but we think Gwen's a very lucky woman." She finished.
Merlin paused. "Gwen?"
Morgana raised her finger to her lips, and tapped them. "It's our secret." She smiled, and left, taking me with her. Merlin looked at me in disbelief, but I just shook my head at him.
But seriously, I hoped that he didn't have a crush on Gwen.
Third person POV...
Merlin stopped chewing his delicious meal. "This fish didn't come from the water, did it?" He asked, pointing down to said fish.
"Well, where else is it going to come from?" Gaius asked. Merlin looked like he was about to spit out the fish, because Gaius said, "The water's fine now. That's not your worry. This is the work of a very powerful sorcerer. I only hope you didn't come to her attention."
Merlin shrugged it off. "Doubt it. Well, no one else seems to appreciate my skills. I just want someone to see me for who I am."
"One day, Merlin. One day." Gaius reassured him, getting up from the table to grab his goblet.
"One day what?" Merlin asked, confused.
"One day people won't believe what an idiot you were." Gaius said, patting Merlin on the back.
"Thanks." Merlin said sarcastically, which caused Gaius to laugh. Merlin couldn't help himself, and joined in.
Back in Nimueh's cave...
The High Priestess watched Merlin and Gaius as they toasted their meal.
She glared at the imagery in her stone basin. "Merlin, you will pay for this!" She hissed.
TBC...
Finally, the Mark of Nimueh is finished! This never was my favourite episode. I guess that's why it took me so long. Anyway, next up is the Poisoned Chalice! So excited for that! Oh, and then Lancelot...Whoa, getting ahead of myself!
So why do you think Elizabeth and Morgana seem to be so close?
