As it turned out working with a licensed pro had a lot of benefits. Such as not having to flee the scene as soon as the cops were called. The three vigilantes stood quietly chatting amongst themselves while Eraserhead wrapped things up with the police. "I can't believe Eraser won't let you guys use some of my babies! He banned the best ones too!" Hatsume complained through their earpieces.
"That's because that shit is likely to blow up, kill someone, or both." Katsuki shot back.
"So? We'll never know until we test them!" Hatsume replied.
"I for one like living. But hey maybe that's just me." Shinsou added, shrugging.
"Just look at it this way Owl, at least we can still use some of them. And you have the motivation to make them even better so Eraser will let us use them." Izuku chimed in.
The line went silent for a moment. "You're right Rabbit! I'll use this opportunity to improve my babies even more!" Came Hatsume's excited reply.
Katsuki glared at Izuku. He only shrugged in reply. Aizawa walked back over to the three, seemed he'd wrapped things up with the cops, and gestured for them to follow as he climbed back up to the rooftops. The three vigilantes were quick to follow.
Since their deal with Aizawa they had been doing their patrols with him. He'd make sure they got in on time to get enough sleep. He'd make sure they had water on them before the start of a patrol and would make sure that they'd all checked over their gear before he would let them head out. If he'd been worried about their well being before he knew who they were he was even more so now. He'd even sneak a quick pat on the head or a shoulder squeeze during school if no one else was around.
At first Izuku, Katsuki, and Shinsou had been confused but they grew to accept it as normal. None of them could say they didn't enjoy the attention; not even Katsuki. During their patrols he'd more openly show this affection similarly to how he had before, though he did do it more often now.
Things were pretty routine for a while. Go to school during the day, go home and do homework usually with Shinsou and Hatsume in the afternoon, and then head out at night to patrol with Aizawa. Eraser had been making sure they got back in earlier because of the upcoming final exams, but besides that patrols were pretty much the same. They could risk going after stronger villains now, and oh did they much to Aizawa's annoyance, thanks to having a pro around.
One night they were going after a small group of villains and got separated. The group of vigilantes were chasing after one of the villains who'd fled as soon as the fighting started while Aizawa was taking care of the rest of the group. The villain rounded a corner and before any of them could follow there was a quick flash of blue light and a short scream of pain. They all looked at each other, concerned. They approached the area more cautiously.
As they peered into the alley they saw the villain they'd been chasing on the ground. It was hard to tell in the dark but they were pretty sure parts of the villain's clothes had been burned off. They were still moving so it seemed that the scream from a moment before was more of a surprised scream rather than a pained one. A man dressed in mostly black clothing casually walked up to the downed villain. "Well can't say that wasn't at least mildly interesting." He glanced in the general direction of where Eraserhead was finishing off the other villains. He pulled something out of his pocket and tied up the villain. "I'm sure someone'll find you. I didn't torch you too bad. Should be fine." The man chuckled slightly. He started to walk away before he suddenly stopped and looked up where the vigilantes were watching him. They all ducked down out of sight and waited till they heard his casual footsteps fade into the distance before getting back up.
"What. The. Fuck." Katsuki gritted out as he looked in the direction the man had left in.
"Another vigilante? I didn't know any others operated in this area." Izuku theorized.
"Looks like he used his quirk though." Shinsou noted. "And he seemed a heck of a lot older than us. You two have never seen him around before?"
Both Katsuki and Izuku shook their heads. They decided it would be best to report what they saw to Aizawa as well as let him know about the restrained villain. After they finished telling him what happened he frowned. "Another vigilante? No, I haven't heard anything about another one being active in this area. Or anywhere close at all." They led him to the spot where the villain was tied up. Now that they were on the ground it was easy to see the scorch marks on the ground. Paired with what the man had said and the flash of light they saw it was safe to assume he had some sort of fire quirk. Aizawa frowned at the scene before bringing the villain to the others.
They caught more and more glimpses of the new vigilante, and yes by this point they were sure he was new on the scene, as the week went on. Izuku had managed to see his quirk in action; confirming it was indeed a fire quirk, blue fire specifically. He also saw that the man had pretty heavy scarring on what parts of him Izuku could see. Overall he made a pretty distinct figure and it was driving the police and Aizawa crazy trying to find him. Unlike their little group this vigilante was not safe from being arrested. Though based on how frustrated everyone involved was getting he seemed to be pretty safe from being arrested. Katsuki was having the time of his life watching them struggle to catch the guy. Aizawa would give him an exasperated look and a glare whenever he brought it up but nothing more.
Finally at the beginning of the second week after he'd shown up the vigilantes got to talk to him. In hindsight maybe not the best idea, but it worked out. They'd been sweeping the area after taking out a couple drug dealers when they spotted him. Izuku had been the first to act. "Hey there!" He said, walking up to the man in as non threatening a way as possible. The man startled and Izuku saw small sparks of blue dance across his hand for a moment before he calmed down. "Sorry for startling you. Thanks for not torching me. I'm Rabbit, you?" Izuku tried.
Recognition flashed in his eyes. "So you're Rabbit huh?" He asked.
Izuku slowly nodded his head. He still wasn't used to people knowing who he was. Though from what Izuku could tell the man in front of him didn't seem hostile, just genuinely curious.
The man tilted his head slightly. "Huh. You're shorter than I expected. Where's the others?" He asked, lazily glancing around the area.
Izuku supposed he shouldn't be surprised that he knew he wouldn't be alone. Katsuki and Shinsou came down off their perches where they'd been watching. Katsuki glared at the man while Shinso watched him curiously. "Gang's all here huh? Guess it's cool to finally meet you. Figured I'd run into you eventually if I stayed around here long enough."
Shinsou raised an eyebrow. "You've been looking for us?"
The man shrugged. "Not really looking. Just thinking if there happened to be a chance meeting it would happen around here. You guys got pretty famous after you took down Stain."
"So what? You come around here doing vigilante shit just to maybe fucking meet us?" Katsuki asked, eyes narrowing.
The man turned to look at him. "Nah, just figured this was a better way of doing hero stuff. Being a licensed hero doesn't really appeal to me, but some part of me still wanted to do something. Use my, skills for something you know? Saw the stuff online about you guys and decided to do something productive with my life." He explained.
So he'd been, inspired? By them? Izuku grimaced slightly. He wasn't sure he liked the idea that they'd inspired someone to do something illegal. Though he really couldn't judge cause they did the exact same thing. The man suddenly looked up, back in the direction the vigilantes had initially come from. "Maybe we can talk some other time. Your pro friend is coming." With a quick wave he was off.
They met up with him a few more times after that. He'd in a weird way kinda become friends with them? None of them were sure how it happened. They had managed to get a name from him though. Dabi is what he called himself. They all knew it was a fake name, but hey they all used fake names so that was expected. Aizawa had figured out he wouldn't approach the vigilantes if he was around so he'd started giving them space when they spotted the other vigilante.
One night that they were hanging out on a roof they got some interesting information from Dabi. "Have you three ever heard of the League of Villains?" He brought up casually. Izuku and Katsuki nearly choked on the water they were drinking and Shinsou looked at them in mild concern.
Izuku quickly pulled his mask back up and answered. "Y-yeah we have. We were looking into them a while ago, but we haven't heard anything from them in a while. Why?"
Dabi hummed. "They tried to recruit me a while back. Well at least their middle man did. I decided why not check it out so I went and met their boss along with this crazy blond chick. As far as I know they're recruiting new members for some sort of plan. Didn't really tell me anything though since I didn't join up." He paused before adding. "Their boss is a dick by the way."
Katsuki snorted. "Yeah I bet he is."
Izuku pulled out a small notebook and started writing in it. "They tried to recruit you?"
Dabi glanced down at the notebook and nodded. "Yeah. A pretty big underground broker told me about them. Came to me since I hadn't been doing much and he knew I have a-" he paused "-bit of a record. Don't know who else they're recruiting or how many but pretty sure the crazy chick joined. Don't know though."
The three vigilantes looked at each other. "Wait, if you've met their boss then you've been to their hideout. You should know where it is then right?" Shinsou asked.
Dabi shook his head. "Nah they warped me and the chick into their hideout. It was one of their quirks I guess. Left the same way." Dabi thought for a moment. "Though the interior did look like a bar so there's that." he shrugged.
In all honestly they had kinda forgotten about the league. With everything else that had happened since the USJ they found it pretty easy to forget. Though now that Katsuki and Izuku thought about it those creatures in Hosu were probably nomu which meant the league was involved. Now that they had more information though maybe they could put some work towards stopping them. Izuku closed the notebook. He was positive that Aizawa would be on board. The league had attacked his class afterall. "That's a big help. Thanks Dabi." Izuku said, smiling even though it couldn't be seen.
Dabi waved a hand. "Don't worry about it. You guys keep me from getting arrested so it's the least I can do. I'll let you know if I hear anything else, but I doubt they'll come back to me now."
Izuku nodded. That makes sense. If he'd turned down their offer once and then turned to vigilantism not long after they weren't likely to want to approach him again. Though since it seemed Dabi was at least somewhat familiar with some more, shady dealings he might still hear something. As they prepared to split ways for the night, the three vigilantes were sure Aizawa was getting impatient and/or worried by now, Dabi paused briefly.
"Oh yeah. One more thing actually." Dabi said, turning back around. The three looked at him, waiting for him to continue. "I know I said I met their boss but he might not have been the top dog. There was this voice that came from a tv they had set up. It seemed much more like he was the one in charge. Things got a bit, heated and he stepped in and calmed things down. Guy gave me the chills even though I couldn't see him." Dabi shook his head. "He seemed polite enough but I know faked politeness. Whoever that guy was he seems like bad news." He turned back around and started to leave. "Be careful." He added as a quick after thought and he was gone.
The three looked at each other. This wasn't good. "I knew that idiot didn't seem like a competent fucking leader. He acted like a child." Katsuki grumbled.
Izuku nodded. "I didn't see him as long as you did but he didn't seem to be the most fit to lead. What Dabi said makes sense. We should have figured sooner that there was someone else pulling the strings." Izuku fished out the notebook again and began to add to it.
"You encountered that guy at the USJ right?" Shinsou asked, glancing between the two.
"Yeah, he was a cocky bastard. But he left with his tail between his fucking legs after All Might beat up his nomu fucker." Katsuki answered, crossing his arms.
Izuku tucked his notebook away. "We should head back to Aizawa. He's probably worried about us." He said as he started climbing down a fire escape.
"Oh he fucking knows we can take care of ourselves at this point." Katsuki complained but followed Izuku anyway.
Shinsou simply rolled his eyes as he followed them. As soon as they met back up with Aizawa they shared what they had learned. He assured them he'd look into it and that they should focus on their exams for now. The three went home that night a bit uneasy and wanting to know what was going to happen next, but they had exams to focus on so they pushed it aside for now. They were sure they'd figure out what was going on soon enough.
