The three got changed in relative silence; all of them attempted to process exactly what was going on. Shinsou was the one to break it. "Is this real? You two would tell me if we were all sharing some strange dream thing together right?" Shinsou asked as he looped the capture weapon Aizawa had given him around his neck.
Katsuki snorted. "And how the fuck would we know if we were dreaming if we all were Eyebags?"
Izuku sighed as he did the same as Shinsou. "There's no need to be rude Kacchan." He said looking over at Katsuki with a smile on his face.
Katsuki rolled his eyes and playfully pushed Izuku as they walked out of the changing room together. Shinsou chuckled as he watched them go back and forth. Aizawa nodded at them as they approached and led them through another door. They walked through a short hallway before it opened up into a massive room without a roof. Inside the room seemed to be a replicated cityscape. It was hard to tell how large the whole area was but they could tell it wasn't as big as some of the training grounds at UA. "This is where you will be taking your exam. Feel free to make use of your quirks and equipment" Aizawa turned around to address the three. "Your mission is this. There is a group of villains holed up somewhere in this block. Heroes weren't able to successfully evacuate the entire area so keep a look out for civilians. The villains are prevented from leaving this area because of police presence and other heroes at the perimeter. You three are charged with finding and apprehending them. There are reports of them taking hostages. If this is true you need to rescue them as well. There's no information about how many there are or what their quirks are. Good luck."
With that he turned and left through the hallway they had come through. The three turned to each other. "Well let's fucking do this then." Katsuki said as he glanced out at the city.
Izuku nodded. "We need to start mapping things out. Then we can start checking the most likely places for the villains to be hiding."
"Let's get a move on then." Shinsou said as he adjusted the capture weapon around his neck.
The three decided to split up and keep in contact through their coms. The city layout itself was pretty standard and none of them spotted any obvious clues as to where the villains were. As Izuku leaped onto a fire escape something caught his eye. He quickly made his way down to the ground to inspect. He bent down and picked up the red object and observed it. Then it clicked. "Guys?" Izuku called over the coms as he destroyed the red feather.
"What's up Rabbit?" Came Shinsou's answering call. Katsuki grunted to let Izuku know he'd heard him.
"I think I know something about at least one of the villains we're up against. It's entirely possible they've been keeping tabs on us." Izuku said as he wearily glanced around.
"Spill it Rabbit. This seems like important information so stop beating around the bush." Katsuki demanded. Sounded like he was slightly out of breath.
"One of the villains we're up against is Hawks. I found one of his feathers on the ground. I'm not sure if it was an accident or a warning." Izuku paused as he scaled back up the building he'd climbed down. "It's possible he's been keeping track of us with his feathers. We need to keep an eye out for them."
"We'll make sure to keep an eye out for them." Shinsou said, voice straining slightly as he climbed up something.
"Yeah will do or whatever. I'll keep an eye out for bird freak's feathers. Let us know if you find anything else." Katsuki said as two dull booms could be heard in the background. Seems like he was using his quirk now.
It wasn't long after that discovery that the villain's location was found. "I found them." Hitoshi said as he peered into a building across the street. He focused in on movement in it. There was no way that wasn't it. If they were civilians there was no way they would stay that close to the window.
"Where are you Sphinx?" Izuku asked.
Hitoshi glanced around for landmarks. "A few buildings away from the bank. Same street, two buildings to the left."
"Alright we'll be there soon." Came Izuku's reply. Hitoshi assumed Katsuki was on his way as well.
The two arrived practically at the same time; both landing quietly beside him. Izuku glanced across the street. "That it?" He asked.
Hitoshi nodded. "I saw movement in the window. I doubt civilians would wanna be that close to a window right now."
"Makes sense. How are we doing this then? Eraser said those fuckers could have hostages. As much as I'd like to just get in there and deal with them as quickly as possible that puts the hostages at risk." Katsuki said while flexing his hands. He turned to look at Izuku. "You're good at coming up with plans. Do you have anything?"
Izuku shook his head and frowned. "I'm not sure yet. It would be best if we could slip in there without them knowing. That way we can save any potential hostages without putting them at risk."
Katsuki clicked his tongue in annoyance. "Hostages always complicate things. What the fuck should we do then?"
"We can't take too long deciding. The villains are backed into a corner right now. There's no telling when they'll try and pull something." Hitoshi said as he glanced across the street.
"Wait." Katsuki said. "I may have an idea. Me and Round Face did something similar in our final exam." If it worked on the number one hero why wouldn't it work on the number three?
"Alright. Tell us what to do Wolf." Izuku said, stretching.
Katsuki rolled his shoulders back. He approached the building where the villains were hiding alone. Once he flushed some of the villains out he was going to lead them away. He'd memorized the route the three of them had planned out. He raised his hand to face the building. As long as he was precise he wouldn't risk the stability of the building or anyone inside. He let lose a blast that tore through the exterior wall at the ground level. "Come out you villain fuckers! I know you're in there!"
There wasn't any movement through the dust and debris in the air for a moment. Then several shapes began to form. Five people emerged from the smoke. "Coming after us alone hero? Bad move." One of them said.
Katsuki let more explosions pop off in his hands. "Oh this should be fun."He said before launching himself at the villains.
Meanwhile Izuku and Shinsou carefully slipped in through a window on one of the upper floors. Based on what the interior looked like this was an office building of some kind. There were several overturned desks and there were papers littering the floor. Seems the takeover of the building had not been peaceful. "It's likely that whatever hostages they took were from this building. They could be anywhere. We should stick together in case we run into them." Izuku whispered.
Shinsou nodded and the two crept along in the eerily silent building. The only sounds they heard were their own quiet footsteps and the much more prominent noises of fighting and yelling, mostly from Katsuki, coming from outside. Izuku and Shinsou pressed their ears to the many doors they came across in the building until they heard noise behind one. They looked at each other and nodded. Izuku tested the door; it was unlocked. He pulled his staff off his back before slowly opening the door. Izuku blinked at the sight of the humanoid robots in the room. "They must be the hostages." Izuku thought as he took in their appearances. They all looked like typical workers who would be in an office like this. Izuku smiled, despite his mouth being covered, and whispered to them. "Don't worry, we"re heroes. We'll get you out of here."
"Is that so? Should have figured the explosive one down here wasn't acting alone. Credit where it's due though. He proved to be a good distraction." Came a voice from behind.
Both Izuku and Shinsou whipped around to face the speaker. The first thing that Izuku registered about him was the large, red wings on his back. Hawks. Izuku had been wondering where he was. It's possible that Katsuki's explosions outside had been throwing off his attempts to track them. Hence why they hadn't been intercepted immediately as they entered the building.
Izuku glanced around. They were in a relatively tight space so Hawks would be at a disadvantage, but Izuku knew better than to underestimate him. Though as long as the hostages were there they'd also be at a disadvantage. "Now why don't you two be good little heroes and give up? I'd hate to have to get my hands dirty if I don't have to." Hawks said as he pointedly looked behind them at the hostages.
That was a clear threat. Izuku subtly bumped Shinsou's hand and hoped he understood the silent message as he started to speak. "You know that we can't do that Hawks." Izuku said as calmly as possible. The sounds of fighting from outside were starting to fade. Either Katsuki was winning or the villains had taken him out. Izuku was pretty sure it was the former though.
Hawks shrugged casually. "Oh well. Can't blame a guy for trying right?" With no further warning several feathers shot at the two. They both barely managed to dodge in time. Hawks stepped further into the room. The feathers came back towards them and both Shinsou and Izuku had to pull some of the hostages out of the way to avoid being hit. If it wasn't clear before it was now; he didn't care what happened to them. The two could do little more than dodge the onslaught of feathers and make sure the hostages weren't harmed either.
Izuku waited for an opening and finally he got one. He flung the capture weapon and managed to catch one of Hawks' wings. While Hawks was momentarily distracted by that, Shinsou did the same with his other wing. They both knew it wouldn't hold long but they didn't need long. Shinsou spoke. "What are you trying to accomplish here huh? What's your goal?" He gritted out as Hawks strained against the bounds.
"Goal? We-" And Hawks froze. The two quickly released him to avoid potentially breaking him free from Shinsou's quirk.
"We need to get the hostages out of here. I can feel him fighting against my quirk." Shinsou winced.
Izuku nodded and the two got to work. They led the hostages to a back alley and told them to stay there for now. Shinsou said he'd stay with them as he got Katsuki and dealt with Hawks. Izuku could tell he was struggling to keep the pro under control. Izuku checked the front to see Katsuki tying up the last of the villains. He seemed out of breath and had clear injuries, but overall seemed fine. "Wolf. We could use your help inside if you're up to it." Izuku called out to him.
Katsuki whipped his head around to look at Izuku. "I'm fucking fine Rabbit. What did you find?" Izuku explained what happened as he led him up to the floor they'd left Hawks on. Only to find he wasn't there. The cuffs they'd attempted to gently place in him lying, broken on the floor. "Well shit." Katsuki eloquently said.
"We need to get to Shinsou. Right now the hostages are our priority." Izuku said as he looked around, hoping Hawks hadn't gotten far.
"Yeah I know. Let's get them to safety then we can hunt the bird fucker down." Katsuku replied.
Before the two could even get back out of the building there was a large boom from somewhere else in the building. The two felt the heat rise before they saw the flames. A new voice sparked to life on their coms. It was Aizawa. "Seems like the villains are trying to cover their tracks. They've set several buildings on fire in order to slow you down. The fire department is on their way to assist but you need to evacuate any civilians who are in danger."
If they hadn't been in the middle of escaping one such blaze they would not have believed Aizawa's acting skills. They supposed there was a reason he was a pro hero and not an actor.
Though instead of immediately escaping the flames both Izuku and Katsuki stood there for a moment. This reminded them far too much of...
Shouta furrowed his eyebrows as he watched Izuku and Katsuki freeze in the face of the fire. The three had been doing excellently so far. He would even go so far as to say he was proud of them. Though he hadn't expected the two boys to freeze completely. Then he remembered something that they'd told him not too long ago.
"Villain attack, when we were five. They had some sort of fire quirk and burnt the apartment building we both lived in to the ground. Heroes managed to get to us but…"
Shouta internally cursed. He didn't even think that this would be a problem. As far as he'd seen neither had reacted negatively to fire before. In fact at the sports festival Izuku had even provoked Todoroki into using his fire. He'd also seen Katsuki in Hosu. There'd been plenty of fire there and it hadn't seemed to affect him at all then. Shouta gripped at his capture weapon. He was tempted to stop the test but if the two wanted to be heroes they would have to move past this. They would be fine. If things got too bad then Shouta would step in.
Izuku woke from his stupor first and violently shook Katsuki. Katsuki blinked and looked at Izuku. "We're not there. We have people to save Kacchan. They need us." Izuku whispered, barely loud enough to be heard over the increasingly loud roar of the flames.
"Right…" Katsuki replied quietly. The two made a quick sweep of the building they were in but found no one else there. They then joined back up with Shinsou.
Shinsou took one look at them before a look of concern took over his face. "Are you two ok?"
"Fucking fine Sphinx." Katsuki said simply. Shinsou left it there.
"You heard the announcement too right?" Izuku spoke up.
Shinsou nodded. "We need to hurry, we don't know how long they might have. Can one of you get these guys to safety?"
Katsuki nodded and waved them off. Both Izuku and Shinsou shot worried glances at him as they left. Izuku and Shinsou quickly had their hands full with rescuing civilians, who were also robots, from the burning buildings. Katsuki would come back and fetch them to get them to whatever area he'd deemed safe. Izuku was constantly making sure to ground himself in the present. Having Shinsou there was a big help; his presence helped keep Izuku grounded. If he saw Izuku starting to slip back into his head he'd snap him out of it.
"I think that's everyone." Shinsou said as he helped another robot out of the last building they were clearing. Katsuki stood there impatiently until Shinsou handed them off to him. He then took off carefully to the safe area.
"I think so yeah. That's all the buildings at least." Izuku nodded. The fires were still raging but he was fairly certain that the fire wasn't going to jump to any other buildings. "We should go meet up with Wolf now." Izuku suggested.
Just as the two turned to leave they were intercepted by several feathers sticking into the ground in front of them. "Not so fast little heroes. You think I'm just gonna let you leave like that? Nah can't have my reputation harmed like that." Hawks said as he looked down at them.
Damnit. They were out in the open now. Hawks was at a major advantage. Shinsou tried to speak but was cut off by Hawks. "Don't think I'm gonna fall for the same trick again little hero. You're gonna have to do better than that if you wanna take me down." Hawks had a confident look on his face. "Let's see what you two can do."
Hawks pulled a large feather from his wings and rushed at the two. Izuku blocked the incoming attack with his staff before rolling out of the way and retaliated with an explosion from it. Hawks was fast though and barely got singed from the attack. Shinsou took the opportunity to duck behind Hawks and land a solid punch. Hawks recoiled slightly before spinning around and slashing at Shinsou with the sword-like feather. As Izuku attempted to rush in and aid Shinsou he was intercepted by several of Hawks' feathers. He wasted no time in blowing them away with an explosion from his staff. Izuku spun the staff around and planted the opposite end firmly on Hawks' back. At the push of a button electricity surged from the weapon and Hawks recoiled quickly.
Hawks flew above them. He was clearly trying to figure out his next move. Before any of them could make a move though they heard the scream of "DIE!" As Katsuki came up behind Hawks and landed an explosion on his back. Izuku could clearly see several of his feathers were singed and fell from his wings, useless. That was how they would win. If Hawks didn't have any feathers to use they could take him down. "Go for his feathers!" Was all Izuku had to say for the other two to understand him.
The four went back and forth for some time. Although the plan was easy in theory it was hard to land any solid hits that could actually destroy Hawks' feathers. Though as they managed to take out more and more things got easier. They were so focused on the fight in fact that they barely caught the announcement as it sounded through the area. "That's the end of the test! Please proceed to the western exit so you can get your results."
The three boys froze. Well that seemed… anticlimactic. Hawks landed and inspected his wings. "Dang you three sure did a number on me huh? I see the next generation is gonna have some great heroes in it." Hawks smiled at them. "I'm glad I decided to come today. You three were great. I look forward to seeing what you do once you graduate. Now c'mon lets get your results." With that Hawks started to walk away.
The three looked at each other briefly before following the winged hero. They entered another much smaller room. Aizawa was there along with several others that none of them recognized. It was hard to tell but they were all pretty sure that Aizawa seemed happy. One of the people they didn't recognize stepped forward. "Congratulations on finishing the exam." She said as she handed the three of them papers. "On these papers you will find your results as well as notes from those who were grading your exam. Please look over them."
The three quickly scanned their sheets. All of their eyes widened and they looked up and at each other. Aizawa walked up to them. This time they all saw the smile on his face. "Congratulations you three. We just need to know what names you want on your licenses. Congrats on finally being able to do things legally."
