Shouta glanced up at the apartment building as he walked in. He'd been there a few times before, but it had taken a lot of convincing to get his vigilantes to give him their address initially. He had actually been there recently when he helped Izuku get his stuff ready to move to the dorms. Based on how easy things had gone with Katsuki he had no doubt things would go smoothly for Izuku. He hadn't needed to meet with the two's guardian before; Katsuki had apparently barely explained the situation before she'd agreed and signed the sheet.
Though there were multiple reasons for his visit today. While his main reason was to get permission for Izuku to move to the dorms he also wanted information. There was still a lot from the two boy's past that he hadn't pushed them to tell him about. Since apparently this woman had been their legal guardian for several years at this point he figured she'd have some information about their past.
The elevator dinged as he arrived on the right floor. He walked to the end of the hallway and knocked on the door that was there. It didn't take long for the door to be answered. A woman in her mid 40s with black hair answered the door, smiling. "You must be Eraserhead right?" She asked. Shouta nodded and she stepped aside to welcome him in. "Come on in. Let's get things taken care of shall we?"
The room was a decent sized office. A desk with papers scattered over it was near the back wall, but most of the space was taken up by a seating area with a couch and chairs. She gestured for him to sit. Shouta nodded thankfully and sat down in one of the chairs. The woman sat on the couch. "I'm sure you know why I'm here today Ms. Hirai." Shouta started to pull out the form before he was interrupted.
"Please just call me Kori. I've never been one for formalities." She reached out to grab the paper from him. "It's the same form I signed for Katsuki right?"
Shouta nodded. "That's right."
She briefly looked over the paper before signing it. "There we go. That should be all squared away now yeah?" She asked, handing the paper back to Shouta.
He took the form back, briefly checked it, and nodded. "Yes, that's fine."
Hirai then leaned forward and put her head on her hands. "Now, why are you really here? You had to have known I would gladly give my permission for Izuku to move to the dorms without a personal visit. Even with his recent… ordeal. So I assume there's something else you want?"
Shouta blinked in surprise. Hirai was fairly perceptive. Though it was pretty obvious that there was something more to this visit. "I wanted to ask you about them actually. They've told me some about their past but there's a large part that I'm missing. I don't want to push them to tell me but I'd like to know."
Hirai hummed. "That makes sense. Ask away. I'll tell you everything I know."
"Firstly, how did they come to be in your custody in the first place?" Shouta asked.
"It was by accident actually. Those two had been on the streets for a while when I bumped into them. It took a bit of convincing but offering food and shelter to a couple ten year olds is an effective strategy. I managed to bring them back here. I own the whole building so I live here as well. I got some food into em and they told me how they'd run away from the orphanage they'd been in for the past four years. I offered to let them stay in one of the apartments here and went through all the legal hoops to get the two officially in my custody. I let them stay in one of the apartments here and they help me out when I need them to." She explained.
Shouta mulled over the story. That would explain Katsuki's comment of 'better than the alternative' that he'd gotten before. "That was very kind of you." Shouta commented. "Not many others would have done the same in your position."
"I was in a position to do something to help, so I did. The two are great kids who'll be great heroes one day. I know they have a great teacher who will help them get there too." She said, winking at him.
Shouta grunted and murmured a quiet 'thank you'. "Do you know why they ran away?" he asked.
Hirai nodded. "Managed to get that out of em early on. Granted most of the explanation came from Katsuki yelling at me but I got the point. Basically the system is pretty biased towards quirkless kids and Katsuki was deemed 'aggressive' so neither of them had… stellar care in the system. I don't think either of them were once considered for adoption so they were there for the whole time. Basically they'd had enough, so they left." She shrugged.
Shouta scowled. He'd known the foster system was biased and favored those with good quirks but he never thought that things were that bad for others. He might have a new mission after this. "I see."
Hirai seemed to evaluate him for a moment before getting up and walking over to the desk. She opened a few drawers before pulling out a folder and sitting back down. She placed the folder on the table and pushed it towards Shouta. He raised an eyebrow at her. "Just open it. I'm pretty sure there's one more thing you're here for."
Shouta pulled the folder into his lap and slowly began to look through it. It looked like all the legal documents from when Hirai had brought the two into her care. He looked up at her questioningly. "What's this for?"
Hirai crossed her arms and smirked. "You know for a pro you're slow at putting the pieces together sometimes. It's clear you care about those two. You wouldn't be here right now if you didn't. Wouldn't be asking all these questions if you didn't. You'll be a hell of a lot better for those two then I ever was. I was just a convenient option at the time. They deserve a chance at a proper family. You let me know a time and place and I'll sign everything that needs to be signed."
Shouta's lips twitched into a small smile. The two worked out the details for the rest of their meeting. As Shouta was walking out the door to leave, Hirai called out to him. "And make sure to keep those two out of trouble! What they do at night is dangerous even if they can legally do it now!"
Shouta stopped walking out of shock. She'd known? Well it did make some sense. He waved. "Will do."
The following week saw the two fully moved out of their apartment and Izuku finally moved into the dorms. Izuku was incredibly relieved to be back at UA. The tension that had become a constant in his life for the past several months was finally fading away. He had a lot to catch up on but he would work hard to make sure he wasn't left behind. Once he was happy with how his room looked he sat down at his desk to start some of the work he'd missed.
He was about an hour and a half in when there was a knock at his door. "Come in!" Izuku called. The only person that would really be knocking would be Shinsou. The rest of his class seemed to steer clear of him. He figured many of them were concerned about how long he was with the villains. He didn't want to admit they were scared of him, but they probably were. He couldn't really find it in himself to care though. He had good friends that he could rely on if he needed it.
Shinsou walked in and glanced down at his desk. "Already working on catching up huh?" he asked, walking over to be behind Izuku.
"Yeeep" He popped the p. "I have a lot to catch up on cause of how long I was gone. I need every moment I can get."
Shinsou shrugged. "If you need any help, ask me. But for now you're gonna need to put that on hold. Aizawa texted me."
Izuku put his pencil down and attempted to turn around and face Shinsou. "What did he say?" he asked curiously.
"He said since our transfer request for the hero course is being processed that we can work with class 1-a for the festival if we want to. Also-" he paused "- he said we can go out tonight. Just us. He has to watch Eri."
Izuku smiled and nodded excitedly. "Oh yeah! We should work with our hopefully future classmates. We got to spend time with them a bit at camp but…" Izuku trailed off. "And it'll be nice to get back to arresting villains rather than working with them. I'm sure Kacchan will be thrilled."
Shinsou snorted. "He's always pleased by violence. Shall we head over then? I can show you the best way to sneak into their dorms." he suggested, smirking.
Katsuki sat on the couch only half paying attention to the ideas his class was throwing around for the festival. He personally didn't care much about the whole thing but he figured it would be a nice chance to unwind a bit after everything that had happened. He vaguely wondered what Izuku and Shinsou would be doing along with their class.
Kirishima turned to him, giving him a thumbs up and a smile. His expression faltered for a moment before his smile was back full force. Katsuki raised an eyebrow at him but Kirishima simply shrugged. Then he felt himself get dragged over the back of the couch. "What the fuck!?" Katsuki yelled as he attempted to maneuver himself to get a shot at whoever or whatever was pulling him. He painfully landed on his head and slid down the back of the couch till he was on his side.
He glared up at whatever had dared to do this to him and was met with the smirking face of Shinsou. "I'm giving you five seconds Eyebags. Fucking take it." he growled.
Shinsou looked at him unconvinced. "In front of all these witnesses? I never thought that'd be how I go."
Katsuku got up and looked back at the rest of the assembled class. He spotted Izuku leaning on Todoroki's left shoulder. Izuku smiled and gave him a wave. Shinsou must have shown him how to get in. The majority of his class were holding back laughter. Meanwhile Iida looked scandalized that two students from another class had snuck into their dorm and were interrupting their meeting."Fucking whatever." Katsuki conceded and walked back around the couch to retake his seat.
Iida adjusted his glasses. "While we don't mind having guests from other classes visit, you can't just sneak in and interrupt an important class meeting like this. You should use the door like everyone else at the very least!" Iida punctuated this with a swift chop of his arm.
Shinsou, who was now leaning up against the wall near Izuku and Todoroki, spoke up. "Actually we have permission from Aizawa to be here. He said if we wanted to we could work with you guys for the festival."
"Y-yeah! So long as you guys don't mind of course!" Izuku added, sitting up to rub the back of his neck nervously. Todoroki frowned and pulled him back to his shoulder. Izuku's face reddened and he buried it in Todoroki's shoulder so no one could see how bad it was.
Iida looked between Izuku and Shinsou. "Well I suppose if Aizawa cleared it then I don't mind if you help. So long as no one else has any objections you're free to stay."
Since no one voiced any the meeting continued. Finally the class managed to come to a consensus on what they would be doing, a concert. Much to everyone's surprise it had been Todoroki who'd given the suggestion. Some plans were made and the class was divided up into their jobs before Iida dismissed everyone to go to bed.
The class dispersed until it was only Katsuki, Izuku, Shinsou, and Todoroki left in the common area. Izuku gave Todoroki a hug and smiled at him after they separated. "We're going out tonight so if Kacchan's more grumpy than usual tomorrow you know why."
"I can hear you Deku!" Katsuki yelled at him.
Izuku only smirked while Todoroki chuckled softly. "Be safe Izuku."
Izuku nodded. "I will be. Get some sleep Shoto."
"Ugh gross. Let's fucking move it lovebirds we don't have all night." Katsuki said, rolling his eyes.
Izuku gave Todoroki one last hug before walking over to Katsuki. "Shall we?"
Katsuki smirked. "About damn time we did. Let's go kick some ass."
It felt great to be back in his Rabbit gear. It had been far too long since Izuku was able to don the simple costume. Deep down Izuku knew that they wouldn't be doing this much longer though. With both his and Shinsou's transfer requests being processed it wouldn't be long until they were in the hero course, hopefully. After that there wouldn't be much need for Rabbit, Wolf, and Sphinx. They'd do what he and Katsuki had always planned to do with their vigilante personas in the end; let them fade into obscurity. Of course with how much publicity they'd gotten from the whole Stain situation and the USJ that would be a lot harder, but eventually people would forget about them.
Aizawa knew their plans as well and had likely allowed them out without him as a kind of last hurrah for them. Izuku figured he'd let them go out as much as they could before the transfers were finalized.
That night had been fairly quiet but the sense of normality was a comfort to all three of them. They knew that Aizawa wouldn't interrupt them mid patrol, as they knew he was busy with Eri, but besides that everything was how it was before. They even stopped on their usual rooftop for a break and snack.
"So." Shinsou started pulling his face mask down. "It's getting close."
There was no need for him to specify. They both knew what he was talking about. Izuku hummed and pulled down his mask as well. "Yep. It seems… surreal to me. So much has happened since we started at UA. It feels weird to think that before the first day I didn't even know you, Todoroki, or Hatsume."
Katsuki shrugged. "Shit was different back then." He said simply.
"We're finally about to both be on the right path though. We're gonna be heroes." Izuku said, smiling.
"As far as I'm concerned you are a hero Midoriya." Shinsou said as he took a swig from his water bottle. "You helped take down two separate criminal organizations in your first year. All that was before you even got into the hero course. The villains won't know what hit them once you graduate."
Izuku's face flushed red at the compliments. "T-thanks Shinsou."
Shinsou shrugged. "Hitoshi. We've been through a near death experience together. I'm pretty sure that gives you the right to call me that." He turned to look at Katsuki. "I'd extend the same to you but I'm pretty sure that even if I did you'd still call me Eyebags."
Katsuki smirked. "Damn straight. But I guess you can call me Katsuki or whatever. Like you said shared near death experiences give you that right I fucking guess."
Izuku smiled. "Called me Izuku then Hitoshi."
The three enjoyed the peace of the rooftop for a while longer. Izuku drank in the feeling of freedom that he'd missed so much during his time with the villains. He wasn't sure he'd made the right choice at first, but after he'd met Eri he knew he had. He was so glad he'd been able to help save her. Things were going well and Izuku couldn't be happier. Izuku sighed. "We should head in. I doubt Eraserhead wants us out super late with school tomorrow." Izuku said, standing and pulling his mask back up.
Katsuki did the same as he rolled his eyes. "Sure why the fuck not. Can't risk pissing off dad."
Shinsou joined them. "Just a reminder that I still have the betting pool open for whether or not he's gonna try and adopt some number of us." Shinsou reminded playfully.
Izuku shook his head laughing. "He's got enough on his plate with his class and hero work. I don't doubt he's gonna keep an eye on us but I don't think he'd take it that far."
Shinsou and Katsuki gave each other a look. "No wonder it took so fucking long for you to confess to Icyhot. You're just fucking dense huh?" Katsuki asked. Izuku had the feeling it was a rhetorical question so he didn't attempt to answer.
The three decided to drop it there and head back to the dorms for the night. As Izuku slipped into his bed he let his thought wander. They didn't focus on any particular thing and he fell asleep with the feeling that things were finally getting better.
