After Sapphire, two other gems emerged: a rather scrawny Amethyst, and an excitable gem that Pearl identified as the curly-haired creature's best friend, Spinel. For some reason, there was no information on this latter one in the manual, though her heart-shaped gemstone was clearly visible.
Despite these gaps in her mind's innate knowledge, Ruby continued obeying her chief directive and joined Sapphire to accompany Spinel and Spinel's alleged best friend, apparently called Steven, to a nearby gem outpost where they encountered a Bismuth, a Lapis Lazuli, and a rather diminutive Peridot.
("See?" said Anger, pointing out an illustration in the manual. "Gems of that type are supposed to be twice as tall."
"That book's not nearly as helpful as you'd think," Disgust remarked.)
While there, Ruby guarded her Sapphire against all possible dangers, which, considering the lack of sufficient data regarding these unfamiliar persons and settings, was everything. This was especially true when the Steven came up to them while wielding a quickly-spinning buzzsaw.
"Halt!" Ruby said, placing herself between Steven and Sapphire. "I cannot allow you to approach my Sapphire with such a threatening device."
"That's too bad, 'cause I'm gonna get you!"
"Oh no!" Sadness wailed. "Betrayal!"
"This would be more upsetting if we didn't just meet them, like, an hour ago," Disgust said.
"We have to protect Sapphire!" Fear cried.
"Exactly!" Anger said, reaching for her controls. "This Steven is going down!"
"Not so fast, you guys," Disgust interrupted. "Yes, we need to be tough, but we also have to be professional. We don't want to act recklessly and fight against our charge's desires."
"Okay, fine," Anger said. "We can ask first."
"Permission to dispatch the curly-haired one, my Sapphire?" Ruby asked.
Over in Sapphire's mind, her emotions were reacting much in the same was as Ruby's, with one significant difference: they were able to use future vision and thus know that Steven's threats were empty.
"So… there's no danger?" Disgust asked.
"I'm just as surprised as you are," Fear said. "But the future vision's quite clear: he won't be able to follow through."
"Well, that's a relief," Joy said. "Problem solved and we didn't even have to do anything."
"Though we should probably tell Ruby as well," Sadness said. "You know, so she doesn't dispatch the curly-haired one."
Sapphire informed the others of her prediction.
"She's right," Steven said with a groan. "I can't, even if we are just pretending." He dropped the saw and walked away despondent.
In Ruby's mind, Joy was ecstatic. "Did you see that?" she said. "She knew what was going to happen! Future vision is great!"
"It would be a really useful power to have," Fear said. "If Ruby could see the future, I could stop worrying about all the possible dangers in the world."
"I doubt you would," said Disgust.
"Well, I want to know what else is gonna happen!" said Joy. "And we can see if Fear worries about it or not!"
"My Sapphire, you were right!" said Ruby. "What do you predict will happen next?"
"Well, the Spinel will pick up that device out of curiosity. Hijinks will ensue."
Sure enough, Spinel pressed a button on the saw, causing it to spin out of control, charging up a wall and slicing through several stories of scaffolding.
"Wow!" said Ruby. "What happens next?"
"In just a moment, the scaffolding will start falling all around you."
"Falling?" said Fear.
A large metal beam landed beside Ruby.
"Falling!" Fear yelled. She pressed a button, and Ruby dodged the debris. "Did you see that? She could have been crushed! The scaffolding was falling all around her!"
"Just like Sapphire predicted!" Joy said. "She's three for three!"
"Wow, you're amazing!" Ruby said.
In her mind, Sapphire's Joy gave a small gasp of delight. "She thinks Sapphire's amazing, guys!" she said.
"She's not really doing anything, though," Disgust said. "Future vision's passive. Ruby might as well think Sapphire's amazing because of her sense of smell."
"Shut up and take the compliment!" Anger shouted.
Sapphire continued to describe events just before they occurred. Her emotions watched as the future vision showed the saw continuing onto a crane, cutting the rope holding up an anvil hanging directly over where Ruby was standing. And then…
Fear screamed. "She's going to be shattered!"
"No, look!" Joy said. "The Steven's going to save her with his shield!"
"Wait, he has a shield?"
"Yeah, see?" she said, pointing at the screen. "And it's going to… oh, wait. No, it's going to break and let the anvil fall on her.
Fear screamed louder.
In Ruby's mind, her own Fear was screaming. Sapphire's latest prediction had quickly come true, and her bodyguard was trapped beneath a rapidly-weakening shield.
"Ruby, I'm sorry!" Sapphire said. "I told you you wouldn't last the day."
"She did!" Sadness bawled. "And she was right! Just like always!"
"I mean, we were willing to sacrifice ourselves to protect her if necessary," Disgust said. "Though I suppose this isn't exactly necessary."
Fear just continued screaming.
"Come on, guys, let's try to look on the bright side!" Joy said.
"Bright side?" Anger yelled. "We're about to be shattered!"
"Okay, sure, there's that. But think about it. Rubies all have an assignment, and we were lucky enough to have ours be this beautiful, amazing Sapphire before our short existence came to an end. That's worth something."
The other emotions looked at each other and shrugged. "I guess," Disgust said.
"I'm glad fate allowed me to meet you," Ruby told Sapphire.
Back in Sapphire's mind, Joy managed a small smile. "Me too," she said softly.
"We have to save her!" Sadness cried.
"We can't!" Disgust said. "You saw the future vision; she's going to be shattered!"
"Screw the future vision!" Anger said. She slammed a button on the console, sending a strong desire for justice to Sapphire and prompting her to rush over and push Ruby to safety.
The next thing they knew, the control room had gotten larger and they found themselves sharing it with another set of nearly-identical-looking emotions.
"Gah!" shouted one of the Fears. "Who are you?"
"Who are you?" the other Fear returned.
"It's like looking in a mirror," Joy S said, waving her hand and watching in fascination as her doppelganger mimiced her.
"Or like if our reflections crawled out of a mirror," Disgust R said, suspiciously eying her own double, who was doing the same to her.
"Could somebody explain what's going on!?" Anger R yelled.
"Er… I think we fused," said Sadness S.
"Fused?" Sadness R asked.
"It should be in your manual."
"Hold on," Anger R said, flipping through it. "Okay, here it is. Fusion- when two of more gems of the same type merge their bodies and minds together, typically in order to gain advantage in a fight."
"But Ruby and Sapphire aren't the same type," Disgust R said.
"Two gems of different types… fusing?" Fear R said. "Is that even possible?
"Of course it's possible; we just did it!" said Disgust S.
"When Sapphire rushed to save Ruby," Sadness R said, "their bodies must have… synced somehow."
"So… should we unfuse?" Fear S asked.
The emotions looked at the viewscreen.
"Well, no one seems upset with us," Disgust R said.
"Plus, being fused isn't that bad," said Joy S. "Feels… right, somehow."
"But also really confusing," said Fear R. "I mean, we're not Ruby anymore… but we're also not Sapphire? Who are we?"
Joy R took her counterpart's hand in hers, gently guiding her gaze towards the window at the back. The others turned as well. A large structure, which Anger R eventually managed to identify as an Island of Personality, stood in the distance. On it were three statues; at the base were Ruby and Sapphire, holding hands, and rising above them, their new fusion.
"Garnet," Joy R said. "We're Garnet."
