Amarante Hatsuko was a strange girl. She never had friends or enjoyed being with others, all she needed was her sister. Her father, Dairo Hatsuko, left her and her sister alone from the age of 12. Where did her father go to? He left to join the Future Foundation... At first, the Hatsuko name was a well-known symbol of hope. Dairo built towns and shelters, created tools required for survival and 'saved everything'. Little did he know his two daughters would grow up to be Remnants of despair, fighting against his life. Amarante and her sister, Ohara Hatsuko, began to understand that they enjoyed seeing people suffer. When they were 14, they decided they must do something to rebel against Dairo and the Future Foundation by building a school which would loom despair upon every soul who entered it. Ohara read about the story of Junko Enoshima and realised how inspired she was, Ohara had fallen in love. Amarante was concerned about the idea of a killing game, but decided not to argue against her sister, one of the most true faces of despair. The girls decided to plan (in secret) a killing game which would cause eternal suffering. Their father must have found out about the Despair Organisation and decided to attempt to reason with Ohara, the true mastermind. Leaving Amarante as her guinea pig, Ohara killed Dairo. The Hatsuko name had become a curse, a curse that can not be undone. Amarante had to push forward alongside Ohara as the spy of the killing game. But Ohara wasn't stupid. She had a plan all along to kill Amarante and reign the world under her command and wish everybody could experience the dreaded feeling of despair. Forcefully, Ohara made Amarante kill anybody possible or else she would be killed anyway. Amarante believed in her sister, so she did it. But what she wasn't prepared for... was the ultimate feeling of defeat as she was dragged into a spiral of twisted thoughts, memories and her own execution.
