This oneshot is inspired by a book called "flat share". I never finished reading it admittedly, but you know... it gave me this idea and that's fine. Enjoy! Please note, I'm not a native speaker that's why my grammar etc. isn't really top of the line.
"Blast it!"
Remus chuckled when he heard the loveliest swearing in the world sounding from the hallway. The oh-so-mellow melody could be heard in the kitchen even though the door was closed. Clearly, Tonks had just arrived.
One moment later, she was standing in the kitchen, hair red and eyes sparkling dangerously. Remus's first instinct was to calm her down. He knew how, well, explosive Tonks could be when angered.
"Hello, Tonks," he greeted her. "Beautiful day, isn't it?" A weather reference wasn't the best way to start a conversation but he tried anyway since there was snow outside. He knew Tonks liked snow, never mind the chill February.
"Rather not," she spat and Remus almost flinched. "Ghastly day!"
"Why's that? Trouble at work?"
She performed a dismissive gesture and flopped down on a chair. "Yeah, that too. But that's not the point. My bloody renter threw me out of my flat today!"
Remus chocked on his tea. "What?"
"Yeah, that's why I said too! Old bugger told me I gotta be out by tomorrow evening. A couple up from Aberdeen moves in. They pay better and he knows them, apparently. So I'm homeless now! Great, eh? Wonderful fucking Friday!"
All Remus could think that this was unfair. He knew how Tonks must be feeling quite well. Being disadvantaged because of lower income or reasons like that truly wasn't pleasant. It had happened to him twice already. But he'd never thought it would happen to Nymphadora Tonks. He didn't want it to happen to her! But what could he do... "I'm so sorry, Tonks. Maybe you could talk to your renter again? He might let you stay a little longer so you've got time to-"
"He made his point clear there. Out by tomorrow evening," she said, tips of her hair glowing ruby, "I gotta move in with my parents again, I reckon... 'til I find something new at least."
Suddenly, an idea came to his mind. "You don't have to. You could stay here. Sirius surely won't mind. Most rooms are used currently, but the one next to mine is empty. Well, there's a bathroom in between but... Err, it's the one Fred and George always take when they're here for the holidays. Would that do?"
Tonks was beaming. "Really? Oh that'd be awesome! Thank you."
"Don't mention it. Thank Sirius instead, it's his house after all."
"I will." She smiled, hair pinkish again, and got up to leave the kitchen. Tonks stopped at the door. "See you tomorrow evening, Remus."
She would. And by that time, a problem would've come up...
It was pretty late already when Tonks entered Number 12, Grimmauldplace - past ten o'clock, Saturday night. Remus heard her walking upstairs, where she almost bumped into him and Sirius, who was standing next to him on the third floor hallway.
"Hello, Tonks," Remus said. He could tell from the way she smiled - wearily and exhaustedly - that she had a though day at work again. And presumably little sleep last night.
"Wotcher, guys." She forced a smile. "What're you doing up this time?"
"Erm... well, Tonks...," the brown haired wizard started.
Sirius, however, interrupted him straightaway. "There's a problem. Moony here told me you'd stay for a bit, you know, in the twins' room. Problem is that he told me this morning and I promised Bill and his French girl to stay because of a mission they have to attend to. Can't really tell them to leave now. They're already in the room, you know."
"Oh." Tonks bit her lips. "Uhm well... I guess I'll be off, then."
"No wait!" Remus blurted out. Tonks blinked in confusion. "No I... you can take my bed for tonight. I'll sleep on the sofa in the parlor."
Tonks shook her head eagerly. "You bloody well will not! Remember what Mad-Eye said two days ago? There's some nasty doxy-pixie cross bread herd in the cupboard in the parlor. He's not sure how to get rid of it yet."
"I'm pretty sure it won't just get at my throat while I sleep," he said calmly.
"Oh are you? One of those creatures bit Kingsley and wouldn't let go off his finger for minutes. It was blueish after that. For two days! Mind you, Kingsley wasn't even napping when he got bitten! He was very much awake."
The both of them were so involved in their heated discussion that neither noticed Sirius slowly backing away.
Tonks crossed her arms over her chest. "I won't let you sleep down there. You take your bed."
"But I promised you you'd get to stay. Therefor it's only fair that you take my bed-"
"Nonsense! You know what, I'll just apparate to the Ministry and get some shit done tonight."
He got ahold of her arm, gripping it gently but firmly. "You need your sleep."
"And so do you. It's full moon in five days."
Remus sighed. He couldn't really deny that. It was five days still but he already felt tired half of the day. Winter full moons were draining.
They stood for a while, not sure whether to meet each other's eyes. But then, Tonks broke the silence. "I don't suppose..."
He looked up at her.
She shifted uncomfortably. "Well, you know... we could..."
"... you mean we might," he murmured, "without telling anyone... just for one night, we could..."
"... we could just share your bed?"
Remus frowned. "Well, I suppose it can't do any harm..."
The young auror peered at him, patting his elbow once somewhat awkwardly. "Only if you don't mind, Remus. I don't want to make you feel uncomfortable."
"Well, I don't think you'd make me feel uncomfortable... Would - would you feel uncomfortable?"
She shrugged. "I don't think so. It's... settled then?"
"I- well... yes." Remus was sure he flushed like a stupid school boy. He quickly turned his head to hide it. "Come along then. Do you still need to change?"
"Yes, I'll take the bathroom."
"Yes... err good."
He stood and watched her leave for the bathroom, shooting him a smile as she closed the door. Remus held back a sigh as he entered his own bedroom and closed the door, sliding down the dark wood. What did he get himself into there... Sharing a bed with Tonks, that was insane - that surpassed his wildest dreams. He had to be bonkers going along with that idea, absolute bonkers...
Remus was dressed in dark blue fabric pants and a grey shirt when Tonks knocked. She came in, shutting the door quietly. Remus was stunned by her appearance. To any other man this probably wouldn't be all too special, but it was to him. Tonks's hair was a beautiful shade of light brown, slightly curled and shoulder length. She wore short grey sweat pants and an oversized black t-shirt with the Weird Sisters logo printed in red on it. She looked gorgeous. Literally breathtaking.
She stepped closer, grinning coyly as she looked down at herself. "Sorry, I look like a dosser or something."
Remus only stared. He got so see her thin arms, lined by a few rosy scars - oh yes, she had some as well. Her beautiful legs, thin but muscular, knees bruised as he'd imagined.
"You don't," he said, his breath stuck in the back of his throat, "you look... you... you do look very lovely like that. Well, you always do but -" He stopped mid sentence, realizing how this must sound to her. She'd leave any minute, grossed out by him most probably.
But she didn't. She stayed where she was. "Well you look handsome as well," she grinned. "Well? Shall we go to bed?"
"Yeah sure."
Remus had already used an Engorgio on the blanker to they both fit underneath. Now that they lay in the same bed, a third person probably fitting in between them but still so close, he thought he should've conjured another one. He'd felt her naked toes brushing his when she had climbed in bed next to him.
"Goodnight, Remus."
"Goodnight, Nymphadora."
It was odd, really.
After a few minutes had passed, Remus turned his head to risk a glance over his shoulder at Tonks. Her back faced him and he wasn't sure whether she was asleep or not.
Remus lowered his head back on his pillow. Bonkers, he thought again, this was absolute bonkers. When would he ever get to touch Tonks's bare feet again? The thought of this was bizarre itself. They shared his bed his blanket. Insane. He'd agreed on this and the only reason for that was that he was slowly going nuts.
Or could it be affection? Was the way he cared for her, they way he felt around her still platonic friendship? Or was it more?
When Remus glanced at Tonks's still body next to him, his breathing quickened. His pulse seemed to rise and he felt a little feverish.
At some point, Big Ben struck midnight. Remus lay awake, thinking about the woman next to him. No matter how hard he tried, he wouldn't fall asleep. The room was filled with tension he'd never felt before. And all because of her lying next to him.
Her feet met his underneath the blanket and he flinched.
"Remus?" she murmured in a sleepy voice. "Still awake?"
"Can't sleep," he replied, sounding more hoarse than he'd thought he would. He was lucky it was dark, otherwise she would've seen the blush on his cheeks.
Remus heard her shuffle. Her voice sounded much closer and clearer when she spoke again. She must've turned to face him. "You okay?"
"Yes."
He felt her gentle fingertips on his shoulder, slowly trailing down, running over his shirt, then over its sew and finally over his bare arm. She came across some old scars as she did and stopped above his elbow. Remus tried hard to keep his breathing steady. Instead, he turned to face her. Her blue eyes were looking straight into his honey coloured ones.
Tonks reached out to remove a loose strand of hair from his forehead. She shifted closer and their legs touched. Remus could feel her bare legs against the soft fabric of his trousers. Their faces were inches apart only.
"You look tired, Remus," Tonks said.
"So do you."
She smiled softly. "We have something in common then."
"I shall hope there's more than this that we have in common, Tonks," he admitted, feeling incredibly nervous. When did she get so close?
"You don't have to have something in common to like somebody, Remus."
"W-what do you mean?"
"Nothing. Just saying."
They lay silent for a while. At some point they turned to lie on their backs, staring at the ceiling. Remus glanced at Tonks. Good Merlin, why did he keep glancing at her! She wasn't returning his gaze, just staring at the ceiling.
"What is it?" she asked.
Oh great, she had noticed. "I... I just wonder if sharing a bed with me... ifyou really want this," he muttered.
"What d'you mean?"
"Nothing. Forget about it."
Tonks turned and intertwined her feet with his. Her ankles were locked around his. "You should sleep, Remus. You're overthinking too much right now. Just relax, okay?"
That was easy to say. Being this close to Tonks in the same bed didn't make it easy for him to stay sane and act normal. How was he supposed to relax with her next to him? With her having her bare feet intertwined with his? Why, in the first place, had he even asked her to stay? Well, had he started it? Or had she?
"Relax, sweety," her voice called him back from his thoughts. "You've got that little frown you always got when you're worried."
She reached out and stroked the skin on his forehead.
"There are a million things to worry about these days... but us lying here together isn't one of them."
And Remus realized she was right. Nothing wrong about two friends sharing a bed, giving each other company in wartime. The man felt the tension fading out of his muscles. He relaxed a bit, the frown had disappeared as well.
"Want me to return to my side of the bed?" she asked because they were both lying on his side of the bed.
"No," he said instinctively, "you can stay here if you want."
She smiled softly. "And you can come closer if you want."
Remus didn't know why he did what he did now - she seemed to have changed his entire mindset, at least for the night, with what she'd told him. He shifted closer, now legs intertwining as well. The soft skin of her cold knees against the warm fabric of his trousers felt wonderful.
"Mmh... you're warm," she mumbled, "you're always warm, aren't you?"
"My feet aren't. They never are."
"We've got another thing in common, then," she said and smiled. He returned her smile, suddenly wanting her to be even closer. He yearned to feel this beautiful cold body of hers against his chest, holding her close, maybe warming her in this chill night.
"We should sleep..." he whispered.
"Yeah... goodnight, Remus."
"Goodnight, Dora."
Tonks looked up at him, a marvelous smile spreading over her face, making her eyes light up in the darkness for a moment. "You could call me that more often..."
Tiredness returned to her eyes as she bridged the last few inches separating them. She snuggled up against his chest, her head nuzzled at his shoulder. Her cheek and the skin of his torso were separated only by the fabric of his grey shirt. Remus wrapped his arms around her waist, skin covered by her Weird Sisters shirt. However, his thumb slipped beneath it, drawing slow circles over her soft skin.
He buried his face in her hair and whispered her name before he finally fell asleep.
