Got Ya!
"You're going to wear a hole in the floor if you keep pacing like that."
She jumped and turned around to find Molly standing in the door frame. She hadn't heard anyone come in or even open the door. It was her wedding day and she had asked to be left alone to her thoughts for a few minutes before it was time to go outside and begin the ceremony.
Giving the older woman a shy smile, she responded. "Sorry Molly. I seem to be a little nervous actually." She never thought that she'd be nervous on her wedding day, considering she was marrying her best friend and all, but when the sun rose this morning she was already awake and had a belly full of butterflies.
Molly gave her a kind smile and walked further into the room, closing the door quietly behind her with a wave of her hand. After all these years she was still amazed by magic. Being raised by muggles and then suddenly getting a letter telling you magic was real is never something you truly get used to.
Molly sat down on one of the couches in the small room she was in at the burrow and patted the spot next to her. After being fixed up after the war her and George decided there was no better place to get married and asked Molly is they could hold the wedding in the backyard. Molly was delighted and threw herself into cleaning, fixing and planning. Her parents helped some, but Molly had done most of the planning and she was happy to let her. The war was tough on Molly, losing a son was never easy and it was clear wedding planning helped take her mind off her heartbreak.
Sitting down next to Molly, she laid her head on her shoulder as she had done many times during the war and the dark days that followed after. Molly rubbed her back in soft circles and they sat there like that for some time in silence. Mother and daughter-in-law.
"When I was going to marry Arthur I thought I'd have nothing to worry about, then the day of I swear I almost ran off I was so nervous." Molly said with a chuckle.
"No!" she responded with a gasp. Molly and Arthur were deeply in love, it seemed impossible that Molly would ever think of running away.
"Yes!" She responded. "Forever is a long time, even with your best friend. In the end though I went out there and clearly it was the best decision of my life. Few years later I told Arthur and he laughed, the git told me he was thinking the same thing! Can you believe it!"
She laughed. A nice big full belly laugh. She felt the butterflies subside some and lifted her head off the woman's shoulder. "I'm glad you both went through with it. You're perfect together."
Molly smiled and looked at her for a moment; eyes roaming her face and taking in her soft curls, littered with sparkles and flowers, and her face filled with the perfect amount of makeup. "So are you and George dear. I never thought I'd see the day someone could keep up with George and then you came along, well fell would be the right word I suppose. Do you remember that day?"
She laughed. How could she forget. The day her entire life changed was the day she met George.
1989
"Mom! I'm going to be fine. Can you please stop messing with my hair, you're ruining it!" She said, swatting her Mother's insistent hand away for the millionth time that day. She was leaving for Hogwarts today and her parents were still iffy on even letting her go. She had spent all summer begging them to take her to Diagon Ally and purchase her school supplies and now the day had come for her to leave and she could tell they were nervous.
The day a woman with dark robes had come to the door with a letter addressed to her, saying that she was a witch and magic was real was a big shock to her and an even bigger shock to her parents. She knew she needed to get to platform 9 ¾, and the woman had explained the basics of now to find it, but now as she stood there with her parents staring at the brick wall she wasn't so sure anymore.
What if it was all a huge prank and she just rammed straight into a brick wall? Her parents were no help really because they weren't even going to go through at all, so they all just waited for her cue. Finally, a large family filled with red headed children appeared and she crept closer. Okay, she could follow them in, that would work! One by one, the family began running through the brick wall and disappearing. It wasn't a trick after all! Quickly, she looked back at her parents to see them staring at the bricks with their mouths open in awe. She smiled at them and gave a quick wave before rushing through the wall as the last red head pushed through.
Before she could even open her eyes she felt herself collide with something hard and she toppled over, along with her things. Okay, well maybe it was a trick. "I got ya!" Said a voice before she felt a hand reach out and grab her shoulders, effectively stopping her face from meeting the pavement.
She stood there for another moment with her eyes closed, taking a deep breath and trying not to freak about almost having her first kiss be the sidewalk. When she opened her eyes she came face to face with one of the red heads she'd seen go through the bricks only a moment before, she must have collided with him. He had a kind smile and his eyes were filled with laugher. She just stared at him then, not knowing what to say and finally someone cleared their throat. Looking to the sound of the noise she found a boy who looked exactly like the one standing in front of her. Twins.
"Oh, right! Sorry about that! It's my first time here, my parents are muggles and this is my first year." She said, picking up her things off the ground with the help of the first red headed boy. As he helped her pick up her things, he placed them back into her tram. "Thank you, by the way." She said with a shy smile.
"It's no worries. Did you say muggles? Our Dad loves muggles. I'm George by the way, and this here is Fred. It's our first year too, but our brothers have already started so we've been here before." Said the red head I had bumped in to.
"Y/N. Nice to meet you!"
The train chose that moment to blow its whistle, signaling it was time to say goodbye and board the train. She had already said goodbye to her parents, so all she really needed to do was board, but she found that her feet had rooted her in the spot; looking up at the train in front of her. She was all alone in a new place, with new people and magic and she was afraid. She had never been alone before and she wasn't sure if she was ready.
She was just about ready to head back through the bricks and go home with her parents when a voice broke her out of her thoughts. "Do you want to sit with us?" She turned to find that the source of the voice was George. Fred was behind him, looking at her expectantly and George was giving her a shy sort of smile. She felt calmed by the idea of not being alone, plus these two boys seemed nice enough.
She responded with a sigh of relief. "Yeah. I'd like that."
Present Day
She and Molly talked for a few more moments after that, about her first time at the Burrow, her first birthday at Hogwarts without her parents and a few other fond memories before Molly was standing up and brushing out her dress. "Right" she said. "I'll be right outside the door with your parents when you're ready. If you're not out in 10, Ginny is going to come in and drag you out by your ear." Then she left the girl alone with her thoughts once again.
Molly had helped settle the nerves in her stomach some and the trip down memory lane had made her almost giddy. She had 10 more moments to herself before she had to leave the comfort of the room and face forever. Sitting there, staring out the window, she couldn't help but think of another time she felt these butterflies in her stomach.
1992
Tap. Tap. Tap.
Tap. Tap. Tap
"George, bloody hell! Can you please stop tapping on the desk?!" She whisper-shouted. They were in the library studying. Well, more like she was in the library trying to study over George's insistent tapping.
It was almost winter break of their fourth year at Hogwarts and she had a test in Potions class at the end of the week. It was late and Fred had retired to bed some time ago, he always hated studying and got bored when she wouldn't help throw tiny invisible balls of paper at some Slytherins. They had become almost inseparable after her little tumbling stunt a few years back and she was so glad to have met the crazy twins.
She helped with their pranks and kept a lookout when they needed and even helped them study on the off-day when they realized it was necessary. At this very moment though, it was one of the few times she loathed the boy's restlessness.
When George didn't respond, she glanced up at him, ready to give him her fiercest glare but found herself only blushing as she found George already staring at her with intense eyes. She tried to get the blush to go away by thinking of anything else. Snape. Potions. Homework.
She had no desire to let the red-headed boy know of her newly developed crush on him. So what if she fancied him a little? It was only normal that you'd fancy someone you spent all your time with for 4 years. Especially if he was handsome, with a smile to die for and a contagious laugh, kind eyes and- she shook her head. Snap out of it, she thought to herself.
This time next week it will have been nothing more than teenage hormones, she knew it. George had stopped tapping at that point and she was finally ready to go back to studying.
"Let's go outside." George said, leaning forward. She could feel his breath fan over her hand and she stiffened.
"George, it's late! If we get caught outside, we'll get in trouble."
That pulled a laugh out of him. "Like getting in trouble has ever stopped you before."
She tried desperately to think of another excuse. She didn't want to see him under the moonlight with snowflakes falling into his red hair; that's what had started this little flame in her heart anyway. "I have to study."
She felt him pull the quill from her still hand and shut her book with her parchment still inside. "Study later. It'll be fun, come onnnnnnnnnn." She felt her resolve begin to weaken and it broke completely when he spoke again. "Please, Pumpkin?" She sighed. She loved when he called her Pumpkin. It was a nickname he'd given her after second year when an exploding pumpkin prank backfired on her and she had been orange for the entire week.
"Fine." She said quietly, picking her things up and tucking them into her bag. George smiled at her and he scooped the back from her arm and walked out of the library, just assuming she'd follow along.
She did.
She always did.
When they finally reached outside, it was indeed snowing and it was cold. She had just cast a warming charm when she felt something cold hit the back of her neck. Spinning around, the coldness then hit her square in the face.
"George!" She shrieked. Even though she had cast a warming charm, there's nothing that takes away the sting of the cold snow on your face. She heard him laughing and decided he deserved a little sting of his own and she began scooping snow into her hands.
They threw snowballs back and forth for quite some time. Laughing, dodging, throwing. She loved spending this time with him. After what felt like an eternity the fight had slowly died down and now they were just standing here in the snow, watching one another and still trying to catch their breath from the fight that had just ensued.
She felt the butterflies go off in her stomach once again. She was right; he did look beautiful like this. Even though she knew she should have, she felt no embarrassment or shame as she examined the boy in front of her.
This was no fleeting fancy; she knew that now. She loved him. From the moment she had bumped into him on the platform, her heart was his. She'd never tell him though, no way. A friendship with him was worth more than anything to her.
Stuck in her own thoughts, as usual, she didn't notice him move closer. She also didn't notice him reach out and grab her shoulders until suddenly, his lips were on hers.
He was kissing her. George was kissing her! His lips were soft and warm against hers, a stark difference from the cold of the snow and she felt herself melt into him. It took her a moment to fully comprehend what was happening and when she finally caught up with the moment she felt the butterflies multiply. But that didn't stop her. Nothing would stop her from living in this moment.
She picked her arms up from their space at her sides and wrapped them around his neck, feeling the red hairs at the base on his head and leaned forward on her tip-toes to get closer to him. She had never been kissed before, but she had seen enough 7th years snogging in the hallways to have a gist of what she should do.
Plus, she had a feeling that George would never judge her lack of skill because she knew he had never kissed anyone either.
Reluctantly, they both pulled away gasping for air. Their breath swirling together in the cold air above them and he placed his forehead on hers, his eyes still closed.
"Pumpkin?" he said quietly.
She responded with a soft hum. She was too happy and too content to form any other words. Her George had kissed her.
"Anyone ever tell you you're a great snog?" Her eyes snapped open and she saw his eyes were full of mischief. She laughed and pushed at his shoulders, making him take a step back.
"Oh, bugger off George." She said, turning around to go grab her bag that had been discarded in the snow but found herself being lifted off the ground and picked up by a pair of warm arms from behind.
"Now that you kissed me, there's no getting rid of me. I've got ya now and I have no plans of letting go." He said, giving her a quick kiss on the cheek.
She smiled. "Okay, I guess if I have no choice."
She felt his chest vibrate from laugher behind her. "Now that that's settled. I wasn't kidding though; you are a right good snog. Shoulda done it sooner." She laughed, as she knew she always would with George by her side and bent down to pick up another handful of snow.
Present Day
She smiled at the memory. They had snogged a lot since that day all those years ago, much to the dismay of Fred, who just wanted to pull pranks without his brother snogging his girlfriend.
Fred.
She felt her heartbreak again at the thought of her late friend. As much as this day was wonderful, it could never be perfect knowing that they were missing someone so important to all of them. His death changed George. After the battle, she had moved into the Burrow with him per his request. "I can't be alone. Please." He had begged. He didn't even need to ask her really, she would have done anything for him.
For a while, they had to cover all the mirrors in the house and a majority of their days were just spent lying in bed holding each other as they silently cried. It was hard on George, losing his other half and she tried everything she could to comfort him. She poured her entire heart into him every day, hoping it would be able to even slightly fill the space that was felt.
Fred's Funeral 1998
They sat at the edge of George's bed. Her head on his shoulder and she held his hand in hers. He hadn't spoken as much as ten words since Freddie's death and she knew today would be harder than the last.
Today was Fred's funeral.
When she had woken up this morning, she had found that he was already awake. The spot next to her was starting to grow cold, so she knew he had been up for quite some time now. She watched him in silence from her spot on the bed. He was staring out the window, as he did most days now.
"George, honey? Why don't you come back to bed?" She learned not to expect a response anymore, so she wasn't surprised when all she received from him was a small shake of his head.
She missed his voice, his smile, his laugh. Everything that made him, him, was gone now. He was a ghost of a person he once was.
Now they sat preparing to finally leave the protection of their small room to attend a funeral of a person who was never supposed to die.
She was heartbroken by the loss of Fred. They had been best friend since she ran into George all those years ago, but she knew her heartbreak was nothing in comparison to what George was feeling at this moment. To lose the other half of your soul.
She stood silently and held her hand out to him, which he grabbed as he stood. They walked out of the room together, towards a moment they'd never forget.
After the ceremony they stood at the grave until everyone else had left. It was just the two of them now, staring at the grave as George gripped her hand like it was his lifeline. He hadn't spoken a word all day, simply just staring with blank eyes at everyone who tried speaking to him.
She watched him now as tears silently slipped down his face. Then, shocking her, he spoke quietly, his voice scratchy from the tears and the days of not speaking. "Marry me." He said.
She was taken aback. Did she hear that right? "What?"
He turned to her then. Eyes no longer empty, but now filled with determination and sadness. "Marry me."
She didn't know what to say. It didn't sound like a question and she hadn't expected him to say anything, especially something as big as that.
"I've been thinking a lot since… you know and life is so short. I can't spend another day without you as my wife, please." He sounded desperate, like he needed her to say yes or he wouldn't know how to go on.
Just as she had all those years ago, she knew she would never deny him because her heart was his from the first moment.
"Yes." She whispered.
The side of his lips twitched up into the closest thing she had seen of a smile for weeks. "Yes?"
"Yes." She nodded.
They'd be okay again, she knew it.
Present Day
They had a long engagement, George not wanting to rush into anything until he knew he could he the husband she deserved. It took some time, but eventually he began to smile again and even laugh. She knew his heart was still broken, but he was no longer a ghost of the person he used to be.
There was a knock at the door before Ginny stuck her head in. She opened her mouth to say something, before quickly stopping and stepping into the room after taking a look at her face. "What's wrong?" She asked, coming up behind her and placing a small hand on her shoulder.
"Sorry." She said, wiping a small tear from her cheek. She hadn't even realized she'd been crying. "I was just thinking about Fred."
The other girl sighed. "He'd be so happy for you two, you know. He thought of you like a sister."
That made her smile and nod. "Yeah, I know."
They sat in silence for another moment before the girl spoke again. "Well alright, your ten minutes are up. Time to get married!"
She took another deep breath, clearing her head and reminding herself that in just a few moments she would be marrying the love of her life. Standing up, she shook her head one final time and took Ginny's outstretched hand in her own and followed her out of the comfort of her room.
She spent a moment with her parents and her bridesmaids, but in the blink of an eye she was walking down the aisle. Her eyes caught George and it was like she couldn't breathe. He was so beautiful it hurt. His eyes shined with love and admiration and there was a small silent tear falling down his cheek. He smiled at her then, a breathtaking smile that she hadn't seen in some time. She took a moment to glance next to him and saw his brothers standing beside him, having left a space for Fred and she felt the tears start building up all over again.
After reaching the alter, she handed her bouquet to Ginny and stood face to face with the man she loved. She couldn't believe that this man wanted to spend the rest of his life with her, but she wasn't going to question it considering how lucky it made her.
She couldn't focus on the ceremony. All she could do was watch her soon-to-be husband as he watched her, clearly not focused on the ceremony either.
Eventually it was time to say their vows. They had decided to write their own, so that it would be more personalized and she had opted to go first because she knew once George opened his mouth she would be a crying wreck.
Taking a deep breath, she looked up at the sky, then to the space where Fred should have been and then once again back at George. She hadn't written anything down, knowing she would have just made it up anyway.
"George, I'm going to be quite honest here. I didn't write anything down." She said, sheepishly. This made him and the rest of the audience laugh. "But, I don't think anything I could ever say or write down would be enough to explain my love for you. I am so lucky that my parents were muggles and I didn't know how to the platform worked, because it let me straight into your arms. I've never told you this before, but my heart was yours from the moment you caught me from having my first kiss be the platform sidewalk."
"It was all selfish really. I wanted to save that for me." George said, cutting in with a laugh.
"Of course you did." She responded, laughing. "I never thought I would find someone as thoughtful, kind, loving and mischievous as you and I never thought you'd be my perfect pairing and if you ever bring up the fact I said that during a fight, I will deny it."
Taking a deep breath, she took his hands in hers. "You are so so strong, my love and I am in awe of you every day. I know I can never replace what you've lost, but I will try my best every day to make this life something worth living. So Georgie-" she said with a wink. "My vow to you is that I will try my darndest to make the craziest, funnest and most wild Weasleys' Wizard Weezes products you've ever seen. I vow to then use those products on you when you've had a bad day and do everything I can to make you smile and laugh. I vow to hold you and love you when that doesn't work and I vow to clean up the mess I made after. Finally, I vow to always love you fiercely and never stop."
She used her thumb to wipe another tear that had made its way down George's cheek and smiled when he mouthed 'I love you' to her before beginning his vows.
"I'm also going to be quite honest in saying, I also didn't write anything down. But when have I ever been known to plan ahead really?" She laughed and shook her head, waiting for him to continue. "You said your heart was mine from the moment you rudely rammed your cart into mine on the platform before first year." She faked annoyance and gave him a light slap on the chest.
"But I think I beat you, because my heart was yours before I even knew who you were. There's no one else I would rather live my life with and I knew it would be you the second that pumpkin exploded on you second year, it just took me two more years to build up the courage to tell you." They both blushed then, remembering the night in the snow and their first kiss.
"I hope you know that my love for you gets stronger every day and this life together might not be the easiest, but it will be worth it because I get to wake up every morning next to you. So Pumpkin-" He said, copying her wink from earlier. "My vow to you is to never make fun of you when you inevitably turn yourself orange again, but this vow does not extend to turning yourself other colors like purple, blue, green, re-"
"We get the point!" Ron shouted from behind him.
George turned around and gave Ron a short glare before turning back and clearing his throat. "As I was saying, before I was so rudely interrupted. I vow to share everything with you. To love you on your darkest days and after your worst pranks. I vow to watch those weird muggle shows with you, even though I will not forgive you for gifting Dad a telly, because now he calls me all the time to ask questions about the shows. And finally, I vow to love you until my last breath and then love you again in the next lifetime."
She was crying again and George repeated her earlier action by wiping the tear away with his thumb. Then he was kissing her and people were cheering. It reminded her of their first kiss. Warm lips. Soft touches. It was everything she had ever hoped it would be.
After a moment he pulled back and whispered in her ear. "Anyone ever tell you you're a great snog?" She threw her head back in a laugh. Of course, he would say something like that.
Then, before she could even finish laughing, he had picked her up over his shoulder and ran down the aisle, cheering along with the crowd.

Their reception was just as perfect as the ceremony. They laughed and danced all night with their friends and family. It was wonderful seeing everyone so happy after the last few years they had had. George looked more like himself than he had in months and it warmed her heart.
Now, they were nearing the end of a beautifully long night and many of her friends had gone home. Her parents had just come to say goodbye after a long night of questions from Arthur and promises to get together after their Honeymoon.
Now it was just them, sitting at their table holding one another and watching the last of their guests dance and say their goodbyes.
"I have something to show you." George said, whispering in her ear. She shivered from the feeling of his breath on her ear and she nodded. Standing up and following him outside.
"What is it?" She asked, looking around at the open space around them.
"Patience, Pumpkin. Look up at the sky."
And when she did, fireworks started going off in the space above them. It was beautiful and reminded her of the display from when Fred and George had left Hogwarts. There were so many shapes and colors and she smiled as the fireworks turned into words.
Got ya
She smiled, remembering the words he spoke to her all those years ago. He was holding her from behind. His head resting on her shoulder as they continued to watch the fireworks above them.
"You're stuck with me forever now." He said.
"I wouldn't want it any other way, love." And she meant it.
