If anyone had to describe Ibusaki Shun, the word 'mysterious' would always come to mind.
And that's how Shun liked to be known as: virtually unknown.
He wasn't really a people person in general. He preferred to be alone in his apartment with his cat while making money by doing something on the internet. The only time he would like to go out and to interact with people is to buy necessities. That had been the plan when he first entered high school and had been the plan when he got out.
However, he somehow managed to get 'adopted' by three very outgoing and eccentric people by the end of his first year. They stuck by him the rest of his high school career. Well, Ryoko and Yuki did. Satoshi was in the grade above them and graduated before them, yet he still hung with them a lot. When they all graduated Shun had expected to only hear from them every once in a while, as it was expected with most high school friendships. Within a couple of months, he had a part time job online and had been able to afford an apartment. He had expected the trio to come for a housewarming gathering.
He had not expected the proposition that they had offered him, though.
Apparently, in the year Satoshi was separated from the group, he was going to classes on how to run a business. When he realized that it depended more on experience rather than being taught, he started to investigate places so he could open a shop. He had asked Ryoko and Yuki to join him in opening one, and now all three of them were ganging up on Shun to have him work with them as well.
They wanted him to work in a café.
Ibusaki Shun, who had a goal to have as little contact with people as possible, was being asked to work in a café.
Shun shut that idea down immediately. Of course, his friends knew that he would. They spent the next few months trying to convince him of the benefits. Satoshi had found a hole-in-the-wall place in a very nice and almost quiet neighborhood. The pocket that Satoshi had chosen was diverse. There was a university and some businesses around it, along with smaller pockets of apartments. There also wasn't any competition there, either. Probably because the place was a bit expensive to buy. However, with Satoshi coming from a rich and influential family, neither money nor charm were problems. He was easily able to buy the place at a discount and still have enough money to get them through the first couple of months.
His friends also told him that they would have him mostly work the shifts when less people would come in, which were to be evenings. Yuki told him that the people who would come in at that time were "just like him". Of course, she earned a glare for that comment. But, like almost every other time, it didn't deter her from trying to convince him.
However, it was Ryoko who managed to get him.
"With the pay you can get a place that allows cats."
Shun really wanted a cat. He had wanted one since he was seven and his TV would get bombarded with shelter animal commercials. However, his brother was allergic to them so his family never could get one. The apartment he managed to grab after high school did not allow pets, but it had been affordable. He must of shown some interest because Ryoko continued on and told him the starting pay, which was higher than the pay he was getting at the job he was at then.
"I really do want a cat."
So, Shun joined the crew two months after he had been first told of it.
The café had been opened a month by the time he started, which was good because his friends were able to teach him the ropes of the trade and he got a feel for what shifts he liked the best. He ended up taking Yuki's advice and ended up on the closing shift most of the time. He planned to stay only until he got finished with school, got a pet friendly apartment, and had some savings after to make sure he would be able to survive in case something happened. However, yet again things did not quite go as planned for Shun.
He got finished with school.
He got his new apartment (with a cat).
He saved enough money for emergencies.
Yet, he could not bring himself to leave the café, even after seven years.
