The front door to the Kojiko household slammed shut for the third time this week. Slamming doors was a common occurrence, this crash was no different than the ones before. The only thing that was different was that it would be the last crash for a very long time.
Yuudai Kojiko often got into small arguments with his mother, mostly over school and his Quirk - which still hadn't manifested even at age 12. Not having a Quirk led to minor bullying but the doctor said there was a chance that Yuudai was just a rare late bloomer so Yuudai managed to push past the bullies. Even with a slim chance of being a late bloomer, Yuudai sunk his dreams and hopes and called himself quirkless.
"Yuudai! Don't slam the door!" Yuudai's mother shouted from the kitchen.
"What do you care?" Yuudai shuffled his shoes off and huffed loudly.
Yuudai's mother growled, "I am your mother, it's my job to care. Don't slam the door."
"You slam the door all the time." Yuudai muttered.
"I heard that." Yuudai's mother crossed her arms in disapproval.
Yuudai rolled his eyes, "You hear everything, you have a Quirk."
"Do not bring that up!" Yuudai's mother shouted.
Yuudai shouted louder, "Then don't keep pushing me to be a hero, you know that there's no chance for me! I'm already twelve and I don't have a quirk! There's no such thing as a quirkless hero! I've given up on being a hero! Face the facts!"
"You give up so easily!" Yuudai's mother scoffed, "I cannot believe we created such a useless child."
"Just forget me then! If I'm so useless then you should just forget me! I'm just in the way here!" Yuudai glared straight into his mother's eyes as something inside him lit on fire.
As Yuudai's quirk manifested with a few sentences from a small argument, his life would change forever.
The next morning
"Hello? Hi, I'd like to report a missing child." Hani Kojiko spoke calmly into the phone, "No, no, I don't have any children, there's a child in my house right now."
She shuffled closer to the unconscious child. He had grey hair and was wearing a junior high school uniform she vaguely recognized.
"Well, then I'd like to report a found child." Hani squatted near the boy and watched for breathing.
"No, he's unconscious." Hani glanced at the blue fading to white backpack in his hand. There was a keychain hanging from the zipper but the ID card was blank other than his picture and school, no name or home address or phone number.
"Yes, please come as quickly as you can." Hani hung up the phone and waited patiently for the police to arrive.
"What's your name?"
"Hani Kojiko."
"Any close family or relatives?"
Hani shakes her head, "My family didn't approve of my marriage and my husband died a few years ago, we didn't have any children."
"How did you find the boy?" The officer takes notes.
"I just woke up in the kitchen and saw him lying by the front door."
"Did you recognize him?"
Hani shakes her head, "I've never met him before but I recognized the uniform from the nearby middle school."
"Why were you sleeping in the kitchen?"
Hani thought about it, "I can't really remember. I must have passed out, I've picked up more hours at my job recently."
Another officer walks into the room, "The boy has been checked in at the hospital. Would you like to be kept updated on his condition?"
Hani shakes her head, "No thank you, I'm glad he's safe but it might be dangerous for me to be further involved."
The officers exchanged looks at each other then moved on.
"We'll have a few more questions for you at a later date. We won't involve you any further after that, we promise."
Hani smiles, "I'm glad to be of help."
"Anything in the backpack?"
The officer shakes his head, "Nothing. All possible ID tags have no name and no home address. His school papers don't have names either and he wasn't carrying a cellphone. What did you find at the house?"
"Multiple picture albums have blank pieces of film, like they were wiped clean. The pictures hanging on the walls also have no trace of a child. Just her and her husband. There was an empty room filled with kid's clothes but Kojiko-san walked right past the door, like it wasn't even there. We checked the school, too. There's nothing on a Kojiko Yuudai."
"It's so strange...the DNA tests from the hospital state that she's his biological mother."
"We questioned her again yesterday. She swears she's never met the kid and that she's never had kids. Told me her husband's job was dangerous and didn't allow him to have kids safely."
"Who's her husband?"
"The pro-hero Art."
"Hmm, that makes things more complicated. What else did the hospital send over?"
The policeman picks up the stack of papers and flips through them, "Kojiko Yuudai, twelve years old, father was Chikamu Aitsu, mother is Kojiko Hani. All normal things except for the Quirkless part."
"Recent tests indicate that he actually does have a Quirk."
"This is beyond normal police for now. We'll hand this over to Detective Tsukauchi."
"How is he?" Detective Tsukauchi asks Yuudai's assigned doctor.
"He's not injured anywhere and doesn't have any brain damage that might cause a coma. But nonetheless he is in a coma." The doctor sighs and crosses his arms, "Quirks always cause new issues in the health department, we suspect that he entered a coma just because of pure exhaustion and overuse of his Quirk."
"But your files said he was Quirkless."
"Late bloomer. It might have even had a negative effect on his body to have his Quirk manifest this late."
"What Quirk did he manifest?"
"We're not sure yet, he only arrived a week ago. We haven't started researching his Quirk yet."
"Call me when you find out more."
"Will do, Detective Tsukauchi."
"Sir, I don't understand what the urgency with this case is." Detective Tsukauchi says at the end of his report, "It's just a kid with a Quirk mishap."
His boss sighs, "Kojiko Yuudai's father was the hero, Art. I'm sure you know his history. We're just concerned about that happening again, knowing what happened is part of making sure that we don't repeat the past. It's not just a kid with a Quirk mishap, Detective Tsukauchi, it's possibly the trigger to bring around another villain."
"Or it's really just a kid with a Quirk mishap." Detective Tsukauchi argues.
"Or it is really just a kid with a Quirk mishap." His boss agrees, "But we can't be too careful."
Detective Tsukauchi's brow furrows, he wasn't a fan of making someone into a criminal when they hadn't even done something. Especially if that someone was just a twelve year old kid.
"Just find out what happened, Detective."
Upon further investigation, Detective Tsukauchi read more about Yuudai's parents. His mother is, or used to be, Hani Kojiko, a normal woman with an exceptional hearing quirk. She currently works at a middle class company as an accountant. His father was the pro-hero Art whose real name was Aitsu Kojiko. Art died nearly five years ago in a devastating villain attack, many people said that it was just his past catching up to him. Art's path to becoming a hero was always a story that had been constantly warped and twisted because of his past. Detective Tsukauchi understood a little more why the higher ups were so nervous.
"What do you have for me?" Detective Tsukauchi was back at the hospital, talking to Yuudai's doctor.
"Well, he certainly has a quirk."
"You know what kind?"
"Emitter, like his father's quirk." The doctor states.
"Yes, but do you know what his Quirk does?"
"Oh, you wanted specifics? In that case, I'll need to talk about Art's Quirk."
Detective Tsukauchi waves his hand, "I know Art's Quirk, it's Come to Life. Anything he drew could come to life."
"To put it simply, yes." The doctor laughs, "But it's more complicated than that. Art's Quirk allowed him to put anything in someone's mind out on paper and that paper would then turn into a 3D rendition of that image. The more paper, the clearer the rendition. He could create a picture perfect recreation of a dead person and control it."
"That's completely different than what I thought."
"He didn't like using other peoples' minds against them. After he became a hero he only used what was in his mind." the Doctor fiddled with his pen, "Kojiko-kun's quirk might be something similar. Bringing something to life, reading your mind, something along those lines."
"But based on the area around where he was found, there was no structural damage anywhere. Just missing files and memories." Detective Tsukauchi says while getting a little more frustrated with the doctor.
"I think that Kojiko-kun's Quirk does bring something to life. But not pictures or paintings."
"Would you just get to the point?"
"Art used to talk about how his kid and his wife used to get into small fights after he was announced Quirkless. They never hit anything or broke any plates, nothing physical. They mostly just screamed at each other until they calmed down and started apologizing."
"So?"
"Kojiko-kun might have a power over words. In this fight, maybe he said something like 'just forget it,' something kids always say in fights with parents. He's only twelve, after all, and suddenly his Quirk manifests. Bam. The mom forgets everything about her son, he falls unconscious after using his Quirk for the first time and here we are."
"Here we are…" Detective Tsukauchi sighs.
"He's a good kid, you know? A lot like his father in a way. But Art always said he wasn't just his past, he was a hero."
"You knew him well?"
"How could you tell?"
"You talk about things that can't be found on the internet."
"I was his therapist during his recovery. Saw him grow into that hero we all know. I got deeper into the medical field because I was worried about him."
"I have to report this, you understand that right?"
"About Kojiko-kun's Quirk? Yeah, I understand, I just hope they treat him like a normal kid. He's only dangerous if you make him out to be."
Yuudai's quirk was named Words that Live and was deemed potentially dangerous by the police. People began to think that if he ever woke up, he might lose control and kill everyone. Detective Tsukauchi managed to convince those people otherwise, reminding them that Yuudai was only a kid. The hospital then proceeded to contact U.A. High School while Detective Tsukauchi privately contacted All Might. Together, everyone began searching for people and heroes that could be on standby for when Yuudai woke up.
For the next year and a half, multiple heroes would watch over Yuudai in the hospital. His father's hero agency, which had been taken over by his father's sidekick, was stationed too far away to be able to provide people and instead provided funds for the kid to stay in the hospital. At one point, U.A. High School's principal, Nezu, offered to have Eraserhead standby whenever Yuudai's vitals changed. Eraserhead didn't exactly agree or disagree with the assignment but stated that he still needed to teach class 1-A. Nezu agreed and gave the hospital Eraserhead's number for when Yuudai woke up, along with many other numbers of teachers that could go against Yuudai's quirk.
A year passed with no activity or improvement in Yuudai's condition. The media briefly tried to touch on the subject of Kojiko Yuudai's hospitalization but was shut down immediately. The new school year started at U.A. and Nezu allowed Yuudai Kojiko to be enrolled for this year as he saw the slight possibility for Yuudai to wake up that year. A few months into the school year and Yuudai had a little change but hadn't woken up. The entrance exam passed as did the U.S.J Incident but Yuudai was still fast asleep.
I've rewritten Yuudai's character so many times that I just decided to go for it so I wouldn't go back and write anything else. I really like BNHA OC stories and I wanted to write my own. Sorry if in the future I get any character's personalities wrong. Also, since this is fanfiction I want Bakugou redemption so maybe that'll come at one point.
and yes, I rewrote most of this chapter because I thought it was too wordy
