I rewrote Chapter 1 just letting you know. Now here, take this chapter before I go away for the rest of the week. Actually, I'm glad that someone's reading this so it's my time isn't going to complete waste.
3rd Person P.O.V.
Aizawa returns to class the next day and is immediately bombarded by questions. 1-A had kept the secret of the new, hospitalized transfer student inside the class but that also meant they'd been sitting on the topic for a full day. Questions had been brewing.
Aizawa quickly quiets everyone down, "I know you have questions but most of this is supposed to be classified."
"So we swear not to tell anyone! We'll even shut down our phones for all of class today!" Hagakure bargains and shows off her darked phone screen.
Aizawa shakes his head, "It's not my place to tell. This student has their own reasons and that is their personal matter."
"Guys, let's just wait for the student to arrive and then ask them questions directly." Yaoyorozu suggests.
Aizawa sighs, "That's a bit…"
"We won't overwhelm them or anything but we've never had a transfer student and we're all a little curious, Aizawa-sensei." Sera laughs and glances towards his friends who nod in agreement.
Aizawa thinks carefully about Detective Tsukauchi's suggestion and who All Might would pick and who he would pick. Probably no more than four students would be able to fit in the room without overwhelming Yuudai. Maybe three would be enough but the three would need to be a good combination of friendliness and energy. Maybe someone close to his age mentally, or someone who'd relate to his situation a little.
Class had ended before Aizawa could even consider asking the question to the class. He wasn't even sure if asking the entire class would be a good idea. Maybe this matter was to be a secret for now. Or maybe the class could go in threes to visit Yuudai. But maybe three a day was too much for Yuudai. Maybe only one person should know about this for now.
"What do you think, Eraserhead?" All Might asks loudly as they watch over the students during training time.
"Kojiko has only spoken a few times since waking up. The doctors say he's cooperating with recovery but won't say anything about that day or anything else." Aizawa thinks aloud, "He's still mentally twelve years old and it seems like he didn't have many friends to begin with."
Ectoplasm's clone hums, "I wouldn't take too kindly to being cooped up in a hospital all of a sudden. Are we sure he's even going to want to become a hero? He's been Quirkless since he was twelve, right? For him that basically means he's been Quirkless all his life. Maybe he's already given up on being a hero already."
All Might's brain clicked. Someone who's similar to Yuudai. Someone who's quirk showed up late. Someone who's somewhat good with people. Not sure if that last one applied to Midoriya but he did have an air around him that screamed 'I'm a kitten and can't hurt you.'
"For now let's only do this one at a time." Aizawa-sensei decides, "It might be too much for Kojiko to have too many visitors at once if he's never had friends."
"Then I have the perfect person in mind!" All Might declares with a grin, "Midoriya-shonen!"
Midoriya's head pops up from over the rocky structure and he hurriedly dashes over once he sees All Might waving at him.
"What is it, All Might-sensei?" Midoriya asks while adjusting his gloves.
"How has training been going?" All Might mentions casually, waiting for the other students to stop listening in.
Midioriya stutters, unsure if All Might was talking about One For All or just training in general, "It's good, All Might-sensei. I thought of a few things I could do but for now I'm just focusing on building strength so my arms don't collapse."
All Might smiles, "I have a few more suggestions for you after school, if you're not busy, Midoriya-shonen."
"I don't think I have anything, just some training stuff." Midoriya mentaly thinks out his schedule and rearranges his routine to make a few hours open up.
"Great!" All Might exclaims, "Then you can meet us at the principal's office after class ends."
"Eh?!" Midoriya shouts. The principal's office? The principal's office! Why? What was so important about training that he needed to see the principal? Did Principal Nezu know about One for All or was it something else? Midoriya had way too many questions but kept his mouth shut. He was just lucky no one heard about the principal part.
"Midoriya-shonen!" All Might greets Midoriya as he enters the office.
"Hi, All Might-sensei." Midoriya smiles and grabs tighter at his backpack straps. He knew he wasn't in any serious trouble but going to the principal's office definitely felt like trouble.
"Just so you know, this isn't about training or anything like that." Aizawa murmurs from the corner of the room.
"Exactly!" Nezu spins his chair around and smiles.
"Then, why am I here, exactly?" Midoriya's grip loosens.
"Midoriya-shonen! You have been chosen to visit the transfer student!" All Might announces dramatically.
"Ah." Midoriya says blankly.
"The transfer student!" All Might repeats in the same dramatic tone.
Midoriya's brain clicks, "But-but-but I thought that was supposed to be like top secret stuff! You're letting me go visit them even though no one's even allowed to know anything about them and-" Midoriya's voice fades into mumbled as his thoughts run.
"Midoriya-kun," Nezu interrupts, "All Might recommended you meet the transfer student. You two have a few things in common but what's important is that you keep him feeling normal."
"Normal, Principal Nezu?"
Nezu nods, "It's not that we want to make him feel confined or caged but right now, it's all we can do. His Quirk is something that's potentially dangerous and we believe he has no control. Before he entered the hospital, his life was normal and we want to give him that sense of normalcy back. Like a classmate visiting him in the hospital."
"May I ask how old he is?" Midoriya asks hesitantly. Everything surrounding the new transfer student seemed to be locked down and hidden.
"He was twelve during the incident and is now fourteen." Aizawa spoke up, not even sure if the word incident was the correct word. There were too many ways to describe the situation.
"For now, just talk to him." Nezu places his paws (hands?) on his desk and smiles.
Midoriya nods, still unsure if he was the right one for whatever you could call this. An assignment? It wasn't really an assignment as much as it was greeting a new classmate. A really mysterious classmate.
"This isn't a mission or anything." Nezu reminds Midoriya, "Just make sure he's doing okay."
Midoriya nods, not sure what to say because it sure felt like a mission. He then followed Aizawa to the hospital, the school had a car waiting because this was supposed to be a secret and also Aizawa didn't drive to school today.
"Introductions will be done at the hospital." Aizawa says in a monotone voice.
Midioriya slips a notebook out of his backpack, one for his fellow classmates, "He's the same age as us right? Is he really strong enough to become a hero and go to U.A. without taking the exams?"
"I wouldn't say that he's strong but U.A. is the closest place for him to learn while also having a safety net."
"Safety net?"
"That's why he's in my class."
"So it's like my Quirk then. He doesn't have good control and it could be physically damaging to his own body? And you're there to stop that from happening?" Midoriya asks while jotting down a few notes.
"His Quirk is voice activated. He can't speak safely without me there. We were lucky the hospital didn't decide to stuff his mouth so he couldn't speak. We're also lucky that the kid seems more mature than we thought. I think any other twelve year old would have started screaming by now." Aizawa sighs.
Midoriya's head unburies itself from the notebook, "Isn't that sort of mean, though? I mean if I were to wake up in a hospital and not be able to ask anything I'd be pretty pissed off. And now you're sending me some stranger to babysit me?"
Aizawa thought back to when he first met Kojiko. He was calm, tired and overall mellow. Not anything like everyone thought he'd be when he first woke up. But more importantly he seemed to just go with whatever everyone said.
"He didn't seem to mind." Aizawa says offhandedly.
"Not mind being shut up or not mind having me come over?"
Aizawa leaned back in his seat, letting the conversation die until they arrived at the hospital.
"We're here." Aizawa steps out of the car.
They received name badges and were given a few rules like what to do if any of the monitors started going haywire and how to call a nurse. Principal Nezu was waiting outside the door. He didn't say much but smiled really wide then let them inside.
Yuudai was sitting up in bed this time. He didn't move much and was still very quiet. Compared to when Eraserhead saw him yesterday, he looked a little more colorful and less tired. The hospital had concluded that because he didn't suffer from any major injuries, he would start physical therapy and recovery sooner than most coma patients.
"Kojiko, it's me again." Eraserhead shuffles in, followed by Midoriya who's slightly shocked at Yuudai's thin appearance.
Yuudai, who had been looking out the window again, turned to the door and pointed at Midoriya, a bit rude but he wasn't allowed to talk. Eraserhead pulled up a few chairs next to the bed for the two of them to sit on.
"This is one of your future classmates. I think All Might mentioned that you're attending U.A. High School's Hero Course this year." Eraserhead nods towards Midoriya who shakely waved.
Yuudai nods.
"I'll be using my Quirk periodically so feel free to talk." Eraserhead mumbles as his hair floats up.
Yuudai's eyes seem to sparkle as he sees Eraserhead's Quirk activated. The room was quiet for a moment. No one really knew how to strike up a conversation.
"I'm Midoriya Izuku!" Midoriya breaks the silence with a wobbly grin, "Nice to meet you."
"Kojiko Yuudai…" Yuudai says quietly, not looking at Midoriya's face directly but rather at any spot of Midoriya other than his eyes.
"Ahm, I guess you already know about what school I go to...oh! I'm a first year and also my Quirk is Super Strength. Right now it has some drawbacks but I think I'll get the hang of it soon." Midoriya adds onto his introduction.
"Drawbacks?"
"Yeah, I'm not too good at control so sometimes my bones shatter. Ah, but it's not that painful so you don't need to worry." Midoriya stutters out and smiles. Midoriya waves around his arm to show that it was okay, "What's your Quirk, Kojiko?"
"I don't have one." Yuudai said softly.
Midoriya freezes. That wasn't mentioned to him in the trip over.
Eraserhead sits up a little, "We went over this yesterday. You manifested your Quirk two years ago and went into a coma. Your Quirk is called Words that Live, Kojiko."
Yuudai didn't reply.
"Aizawa-sensei, is this Kojiko as in Aitsu Kojiko? As in on of the few vigilantes become villain become hero Kojiko? As in the pro-hero Art, Kojiko?" Midoriya presses his hands into his lap with utter excitement and nearly glowing as he realized where he'd heard that name before.
"...Yes." Eraserhead confirms.
"You followed my dad's work?" Yuudai asks, a little louder than all the previous times he'd spoken.
"Of course! His journey was one of the more thrilling tales because he has had almost every perspective of what it is to be part of the hero scene! The fact he was a vigilante and a villain before his hero life made him understand the way a villain functioned and he was even able to cooperate with vigilantes and started a minor movement of many vigilantes becoming heroes instead of villains!" Midoriya exclaims with pure joy.
Yuudai smiles. His dad had given him the inspiration to be the first Quirkless hero. After his dad died, he was forced to accept that Quirkless people wouldn't ever be heroes. Yuudai was a little surprised when Midoriya knew so much about his dad, Art wasn't exactly a top hero because of his background as a villain and vigilante.
"Why do you know so much about him? I mean, it sounds like you did a lot of research and my dad did talk a lot about his experiences but most of those videos are hard to find." Yuudai piped up a little and Eraserhead relaxed a little as Yuudai began to speak at a normal pace and tone, sounding more comfortable around Midoriya than he did with the doctors or himself.
"Ah, actually I like to research Quirks and heroes. It's like a hobby." Midoriya sheepishly admits.
"So then you know what makes a Quirk and heroes so strong and you can probably even think of useful moves that different Quirks can have, right? Did you study my dad's Quirk a lot, too?" Yuudai chirps, he really did like talking about his father's pro-hero career.
"Actually, I was sort of a fan of Art. I mean, I'm a fan of a lot of heroes like All Might but I became a fan of Art's after that one rumor about his kid but I guess that would be you." Midoriya backtracks a little, "It's not that I was interested in the rumor itself, it was more like I stumbled upon it because I was researching a topic relating to it so I decided to look into it and I found Art's history which is really quite captivating but also…" Midoriya rambles on for the next twenty minutes with Yuudai actively listening in and occasionally commenting and semi-ranting alongside Midoriya.
"If I remember correctly, that rumor was about me being Quirkless, right?" Yuudai recalls.
Midoirya nods, "The rumor was about how Art's child, you, hadn't developed a Quirk yet."
"So you were interested in the manifestation of a Quirk, then?"
"I wasn't looking into the manifestation but it's sort of similar. I was in the middle of looking at late manifesting Quirks and Quirklessness because I was Quirkless until earlier this year. When I was searching online I saw the rumor of another Quirkless kid so I read a little about it. I guess the end result is that you just had a late manifestation."
"You were Quirkless too?"
"Yeah, my Quirk developed really late but it's not like my mom's or my dad's from what I've heard." Midoriya confirms.
Yuudai grins, "Really? I heard that's rare too. I have something like my dad's Quirk apparently."
Aizawa perked up, Yuudai hadn't spoken much and even on paper he had not once talked about his Quirk. He even seemed to deny even having a Quirk in the first place.
"Midoriya, your Quirk didn't come until you were 14, right? Is that why there's such a heavy toll on your body?" Yuudai asks.
"Yes, my body isn't used to having a Quirk so I need extra training compared to the others so that I won't damage my body too much."
"You have an Emitter Quirk right?"
"My Quirk basically just enhances my physical abilities, so yes." Midoriya nods again.
"So one day you'll be able to use a lot of power without damaging anything? That's soooo cool!" Yuudai exclaimed and then took a deep breath in, he'd never spoken like this to anyone before. In school people didn't talk to him much and he mostly just talked to himself. Thinking about what would happen if he walked a certain direction or if he hit the bully back. He'd never had an instance where he didn't need to think before acting.
"One day, maybe." Midoriya scratches the back of his head, "I sort of hoped that I would get the hang of it before the Sports Festival but it might not happen."
"Sports Festival?"
Midoriya glanced at Eraserhead who nodded, a note saying it was okay to talk about school related things.
"Yeah, the one that's filmed live. U.A. is sort of famous for it in a way." Midoriya grins.
Yuudai hummed and the blankets moved as his feet shuffled. Quirks were something he watched from afar his whole life. It was strange to think that he'd be going to a school and attending the hero course.
"I'm sure that you'll be able to attend next year's festival!" Midoriya declares, "You aren't suffering from major injuries so recovery should be faster than most."
Yuudai nearly laughed, "I don't really care about the festival. Personally, I just don't want to be in a hospital."
"Sorry, for asking but, Kojiko-kun, how old are you?" Midoriya changed the subject from Quirks to something else, he'd never met someone who was in a coma for such a long time before. He briefly wondered what time felt like to them.
Yuudai thinks about it, "I'm twelve but I turn thirteen in June!"
Aizawa corrects him, "You're fourteen, you turn fifteen in June."
"Oh, right." Yuudai snaps his fingers weakly, "The coma."
"I guess you'll need to start thinking of yourself as a fourteen year old." Midoriya jokes.
"I'd rather start thinking about physical therapy." Yuudai argues.
The door slides open and Nezu walks in the room holding a small cup of pudding.
"I snuck this in for you." He smiles and places it on the bed.
Yuudai nods his head in thanks.
"I'm guessing they just feed you really plain foods here."
Yuudai shakes his head and opens the pudding, "I can't eat most solid foods yet because I've been asleep for two years so the most flavorful thing I can eat right now is soup. It's not really that the food is plain but it's just mushy. It's gross."
Aizawa stands up and stretches, "Visiting hours are almost up."
"Really?" Midoriya glances out the window to see the sun setting.
"Ah! It's this late already, I'm going to miss dinner." Midoriya stands up suddenly then smiles, "I'll visit again, Kojiko-kun."
"We'll come back later." Aizawa repeats.
"Eraserhead is coming back too?" Yuudai asks, looking at the tired man.
He nods, "I'll be here whenever you're talking to someone."
Yuudai smiles, "Thanks."
"We'll see you again, Kojiko-kun," Midoriya waves goodbye at the door, "Maybe we can talk about your Quirk next time, Kojiko-kun!" Midoriya smiles widely as the door slid shut, leaving Yuudai with Nezu and Eraserhead.
Aizawa nods at Nezu, wanting to speak to him before leaving.
"Kojiko, don't push recovery. Tomorrow the students start preparing for the Festival and next week is the event. Don't push yourself. You might not be able to attend the festival but you can always watch it on tv." Aizawa nods and then leaves with the Principal.
Yuudai sighs and leans back, pudding spoon in hand. One day he's having a small argument with his mom the next he's fourteen years old and attending U.A. High School's Hero Course. A few minutes after everyone had left, Yuudai was one again filled with a sense of emptiness in his gut. He didn't have anything to do while he was awake. Yuudai was glad that Eraserhead had brought over Midoriya because if not he'd might have just gone back to sleep. When Yuudai woke up yesterday he was surrounded by a doctor and heroes and that had been a little overwhelming. But being surrounded by nothing was a little too boring.
The doctor spoke about his condition and he was constantly reminded of what day and year it was and how old he was and that he now had a potentially dangerous Quirk that would need training. Yuudai could barely remember the fight with his mother but when he asked about her everyone just said she was doing well or doing okay. They never told him where she was or why she hadn't visited. Maybe she was still mad at him for not having a Quirk or maybe she didn't care for him anymore and had left the country once he'd fallen asleep. Yuudai didn't like sitting in an empty room with a now empty pudding cup.
