A/N:

This is my fourth attempt to write something. This idea came up a few days ago and I needed to get it out of my mind and wanted to share it. But, I warn that it is a bit painful. I honestly don't know if I can do a good job here, but I hope you like it.

So keep reading and I'm sorry for any mistake.

A second chance.

Life doesn't come with an instruction manual under the arm. Absolutely no one is prepared when these things happen, although ironically we all know that one day these things are going to happen.

-But... that doesn't make it any less painful-

What happens when you lose the person you love the most? Would you be willing to accept a second chance? Would you be willing to forgive to love again?

I love you mommy.

Bonnie woke up to the sound of the alarm. It only took her a few seconds to turn off the alarm clock, but even so, she didn't get out of bed, she simply allowed herself five more minutes within the comfort of her sheets.

With the few minutes that she had, she tried to remember her dream, but to no avail. It was difficult for her to remember anything.

Wasting no more time, Bonnie took a deep breath and opened her eyes to face a new day.

Slowly, she moved her body to the right side of the bed and placed her hands under her cheek to focus her gaze on the small photo framed on her nightstand.

The photograph filled her with a painful feeling, but that did not prevent a smile from forming on her face.

"Happy birthday angel…"

And with those words Bonnie started her day.

Her routine was simple;

A bath with cold water. The first item of clothing she found in the closet, a hot coffee with a high dose of sugar to drive her car for 15 minutes to her store, wait for the exact time to finish her work day and close. Driving home again after doing some little shopping so she can make dinner. Taking a long shower to fall asleep early and wake up in the middle of the night only to see the same photograph that she would see the next day when she woke up.

That was exactly what Bonnie had been doing for the last year.

But today... Her routine would be different.

Bonnie left her house before the sun came up. She drove slowly as she veered off in another direction. Her course, the only flower shop that sold the biggest Sunflowers in the city.

Bonnie drove for more than half an hour to be the first customer to buy the most beautiful yellow and orange flowers.

Eight sunflowers in all.

With a huge smile on her face, Bonnie placed the flowers very carefully on the passenger seat.

She started her car, and before moving forward, her gaze focused on the beautiful flowers next to her, for a second a lump in her throat formed, it was that bittersweet feeling that always invaded her before reaching their meeting.

With a sad smile… Bonnie advanced.

Today, she was going to encounter the most important person in her life.

The time it took her to drive to reach her destination was enough for the daylight to dissipate the cold.

The mist that had accumulated all the way was cleared by the sun's rays.

Bonnie watched and she could only notice a few vehicles in the parking lot.

She turned off her car and took the flowers carefully so as not to spoil them.

Outside her vehicle, Bonnie took slow steps down the path she knew well. She had been walking this same path for the past two years.

Bonnie breathed, inhaling and exhaling hard until she reached the exact spot.

With a melancholy smile she proceeded to kneel and carefully placed the flowers on the grass to clean the leaves that made it difficult to read the inscription on the marble stone.

Already clean.

Bonnie took the old withered flowers and put the eight sunflowers into the small vase.

With a sigh and a slight smile Bonnie couldn't help shedding a few tears.

"Happy birthday angel..."

Bonnie brought the fingers of her hand to her lips and kissed them to place the kiss on the tombstone.

"They are the most beautiful sunflowers I found for you...", She wiped her tears and smiled again as the cold breeze froze her cheeks.

"Today you would be turning eight years old baby... and, not a single day mommy has stopped missing you..." Bonnie brought her trembling hands to her mouth to try to silence her pain.

But, it didn't matter how many times she wiped her eyes, her tears would not stop falling.

For almost two painful years, Bonnie has had to live with an immense sadness inside her chest.

Never in her life did she imagine this would happen to her, but here she was sitting on her ankles, in front of her little daughter's grave.

Almost two years ago, Bonnie lost her little girl, and with it a part of herself died.

Not only that,

After some time of considering and without warning, Bonnie made the decision to end her marriage.

The circumstances led her to make that difficult decision. For Bonnie, she had lost her husband long before, and the separation only made it official.

Since then, her life became automatic mode.

Her heart hardened.

Her reason for being happy was gone.

The brightness of her smile faded and her apathy was the only thing she had to offer.

For a long time Bonnie searched for culprits, but then she understood that no one was to blame.

The only thing she could do was cry... and Bonnie cried all she could to vent all the suffering that she felt inside.

Bonnie cried so much, hoping it wouldn't hurt anymore... but the pain never went away.

So Bonnie just kept it and left it ingrained within her being, hiding it, so that no one would ask questions, and no one would bother her with overrated advice that she did not want to hear.

No one could comfort her... no one understood what she was going through... and she hated when others tried to minimize her pain.

Bonnie didn't want to hear words of comfort.

There were no words in this world that would make her calm her pain, and there were no words to explain the painful feeling she felt.

Biting her lips, Bonnie was silent for a long moment until she spoke the same words from the dream that she didn't remember.

"I love you…"

With the same sad smile, She said goodbye to her daughter.

It wasn't until Bonnie turned around that she could see him just a few steps away,

Silently, he was behind her.

"Niklaus…?" The name formulated like a fuzzy thought inside her head, but she hadn't realized that she had said it out loud.

"Bonnie..."

She froze immediately upon hearing him, but Bonnie didn't respond.

The only reaction she had was to look away.

She clenched her fists in annoyance at finding him here, his presence affecting her more than she wanted to admit.

Without saying a word and without showing him how affected she was to see him, Bonnie walked around him to walk away immediately, but Klaus stopped her by taking her hand in his.

Bonnie gasped softly... she swallowed hard as she felt the tingle on her skin.

Her whole body shook completely, but she moved her hand quickly, as if she had felt something burning her skin.

Klaus didn't put up any resistance when Bonnie let go of his hand to continue on her way, but unable to control his desire to look at her for another second, he called out to her again.

"Bonnie..." his voice was heard with anguish and despair.

Just for that reason she stopped, she took a second breath and turned to him with a frown.

She tried to keep her calm and understanding, but her gaze was filled with outrage.

Bonnie tried with all her being to understand him.

For a long time, she wanted to heal her wounds.

Bonnie didn't want to feel any kind of resentment against him, much less she never wanted to blame him.

Niklaus was once her husband, the man she loved with all her might, but Bonnie couldn't control the terrible feelings he caused in her, and now here, being face to face, Bonnie realized that at she still had a long way to go.

However, Bonnie was not ready to do it, not even she felt capable of facing him, not yet, much less not here.

Klaus knew very well that he shouldn't be here, he was breaking one of their rules and seeing him here made her deeply angry.

It had been a long time since they had seen each other, and it was like receiving a severe blow to the stomach to see him standing right behind her.

The feelings Bonnie once harbored for Klaus always remained constant, making her decisions harder to cope with.

Losing him... it was still painful for her.

With what little willpower she had left, Bonnie clung to keep from crying in front of him, but as much as she hid her sadness, Klaus could see the moisture in her gaze.

For the first time in a long time, Bonnie looked into his eyes, feeling an agonizing pang in her heart.

Especially when she realized what he was holding in his hands, a beautiful bouquet of sunflowers.

Unlike her, Klaus looked terrible.

His appearance was haggard and unkempt.

His hair, beard, and mustache had grown longer since the two of them last saw each other, and that was a little less than a year ago when they both signed the divorce.

Bonnie could see that he was thinner.

But even though she knew he was suffering, she didn't care.

With her forearm raised, Bonnie pointed her finger at him as she brought her gaze to the ground.

She had looked enough and she couldn't keep looking at him in the face, because despite everything, it hurt her to see him that way.

"We agreed that I would come in the morning and you would come in the afternoon… I don't know why you are here… But, let it be the last time you do it, Niklaus."

Her tears fell, but Bonnie never looked up.

Without waiting for an answer, she walked quickly knowing that this time he would not stop her. And so it was, Klaus didn't have the courage to stop her.

He watched her go and he couldn't do anything to avoid it because Bonnie was right.

Klaus broke one of their rules.

He didn't want to upset her. Klaus knew he was being selfish, but he needed to see her for a moment, he missed her too much.

During these last two years Klaus has been suffering a terrible ordeal from not being able to be by her side and when he saw her, he was carried away by the desperate urge to look into her eyes.

But Bonnie still looked at him with resentment, and that hurt him a lot, but how can he blame her...?

However, a smile spread across his face. Bonnie always looked beautiful without a drop of makeup and he liked being able to appreciate the freckles on her cheekbones and her nose.

With a slight sigh, Klaus looked down at his hand and he moved his fingers as he remembered the warmth he felt as he took her hand in his.

He dared to touch her and at no point did he regret it.

Being able to feel her for just a second was enough for him to ease his own pain. Although it was only for a brief moment.

Immersed in his thoughts, Klaus had come here for two purposes, one was to intentionally encounter Bonnie and the other... to start asking for forgiveness.

Bonnie hadn't been the first customer to buy the flowers at the little florist.

Klaus, like her, knew very well what his daughter's favorites were, it was he who always bought flowers for her and for Bonnie.

However, it took a long time for Klaus to decide to come to this place.

It took him far more courage than he thought he had to come to this place.

It was surprising for him to realize how much he had changed in the last year.

The guilt made him a different man

That was what fear had done to Klaus, completely change him in a negative and destructive way.

Fear took control of his life and left him in a deplorable state. But no more, he couldn't allow this to keep happening. He had to stop it and here he was showing that he had another option. Although he was still afraid.

But, Klaus didn't want to feel that way anymore. It was very difficult for him to try to get out of the hole where he was. But for something he had to start, everything else he would assume little by little, as his father used to say to him, One battle at a time Niklaus...

And here he was battling his greatest pain.

Klaus had finally summoned the strength to face his fears...

He hadn't come since the funeral.

Coward, he reproached himself during all this time, but Klaus could no longer prolong this moment.

This was the first time he had come to see his daughter after almost two long years.

Taking small steps, Klaus did the same as Bonnie.

With his knees on the ground, he smiled with a terrible sadness in his soul, his little girl was lying inside this grave.

"Happy birthday angel… I'm sorry I didn't come earlier…" and with that, Klaus silently cried like a helpless child.

-Carved in gold letters, it could be read.

"Evelyn Mikaelson-Bennett, became an angel at the age of six.

Defender of animals and lover of sunflowers.

Mom and Dad will always love you"

Evelyn Mikaelson-Bennett was three years and two months old when she was diagnosed with a rare type of soft tissue cancer, Undifferentiated Pleomorphic Sarcoma, known in the past as Malignant Fibrous Histiocytoma, or MFH for short.

She was admitted to the hospital for children with cancer and treated by the best specialists, receiving the full treatment of radiotherapy and chemotherapy to kill cancer cells after the removal of the tumor in the abdominal area.

After a time of struggle, Evelyn Mikaelson-Bennett managed to win her battle with cancer.

But a year later the cancer returned, metastasizing within the lungs.

After struggling for a few months, Evelyn's small body couldn't resist it.

Pd:

This is a story with a different plot on how to find healing or comfort. The idea came a long time ago after seeing a scene in a movie, and maybe Boseman's death influenced this.

Sorry if this was too sad to read. I was sad these days and wanted to share my sadness. So I posted this to see what you think.

This won't be a long story, maybe two or three more chapters, but I don't know when I'll be able to update because this is new to me, so sorry if I keep you waiting.

So I posted this hoping you guys like it. Please, don't judge me and be nice to me!

Thanks for reading.
