Hi again, it's me again at 2-ish am. Anyways, this just a chapter like always. Honestly this one was written about a week or two ago so I can't really say I have a strong love or hate for it. Also, may I just say Haikyuu manga just ended and it makes me sad but also it was so good. Okay, that's all I have to tell you so see you on the 22nd.
3rd Person P.O.V.
Across the city, on a water tower…
"Hey, hey, hey, hey." Shigaraki exclaims, "What the hell?! Why'd that Nomu have to go and get killed? Why is that kid there? There's so much I want to say that I can't keep up! This is a mess!"
Shigaraki was irritated but for Kurogiri that wasn't something to be concerned with. Sure, it was a bit of a surprise to see Midoriya at Hosu City but it was a little more of a surprise to see someone who looked an awful lot like someone All for One had talked about once, many years ago.
All for One was complaining and ranting about how he'd been stabbed in the back, literally and figuratively. By a man with blue and gold hair and a Quirk that could make your worst fears come to life. The only reason the conversation had begun was because All for One had heard the ex-villain had had a child. He spoke about what a great villain Aitabi was and could have kept being if only he'd met Aitabi when he was younger. If he was younger then Aitabi wouldn't even have thought about being a hero and he wouldn't have stabbed All for One in the back.
The conversation ended suddenly when All for One decided he didn't want to speak about it anymore. At the time Kurogiri was curious and young so he looked up any news on villains becoming heroes. Aitabi was first a vigilante at age eighteen and became a villain when he was twenty three. He was a villain for fifteen years before leaving to become a hero at age thirty eight. He married, at age thirty nine, to a woman named Hani whose last name was never revealed and became a hero at age forty.
There just so happens to be a kid down there that looked like his spitting image. He was definitely Aitabi's son. Kurogiri wondered if this kid would turn out just like his dad or maybe even a little worse. All for One would be very interested in knowing about this.
Yuudai Kojiko P.O.V.
"He saved the boy?"
"Idiot, he took a hostage!"
"He killed someone with no hesitation."
I can't believe it...I actually lost it...I know I'm not ready to say anything after just accidentally stopping the lives of everything in the near vicinity for a few seconds but Midoriya. Midoriya is right there. My coughing had calmed down but my throat felt like it had just been burned. I was reckless...that could have been worse...it could have been better. Did no one notice?
"Anyway, get ready to fight for now!" The woman readies herself.
"Why are you all standing around in a group?" A voice calls from behind us, "The villain should've escaped this way."
Endeavor? I thought his agency wasn't in Hosu?
"How are things on your end?"
"Things got a little rough," Endeavour raises an eyebrow at our group, "But don't tell me that man is…"
"Let...go…" Midoriya struggles under the Hero Killer's hand and catches my attention again.
Right, attacks that won't hurt Midoriya or the Hero Killer. Just capture the Hero Killer. His injuries should be major enough that he won't be able to stay conscious much longer…
"Endeavor." The Hero Killer growls as his mask slides off his face.
"Hero Killer!" Endeavor smiles and readies himself to launch a ball of flames.
Gran Torino sticks out his arm, "Wait, Todoroki!"
The Hero Killer stands on his feet, letting Midoriya go. He faces us and my blood runs cold and my body freezes.
"You fake…" the Hero Killer's eyes seem to glow red, "I must make things right...someone must be dyed in blood...I must take back what it means to be a hero!" I feel my body instinctively shrink away from him. "Come! Try and get me, you fakes!"
Even Endeavor backs away.
"The only one I'll let kill me is the true hero, All Might!"
It was like facing a huge, wild beast. Does he really stand by his beliefs that much? Though the Hero Killer was weakened and injured and barely standing, it felt like he was more powerful than ever. His knife clattered to the ground and that pressure disappeared. The Hero Killer had passed out on his feet. Iida and Todoroki fell to the floor and I took in a breath. I'd later learn that a broken rib had pierced his lung and that we were just lucky enough to not have to fight him when he was the only one able to stand and fight.
After the Hero Killer had been successfully handed over to the police, we were rushed to the hospital. Midoriya relayed my message that I didn't want to be in a separate room which was helpful and my doctor had called Hosu General Hospital for records of what happened. He insisted on coming over many times. I said that I was doing fine and everyone in the hospital swore to keep my existence a secret until I started attending U.A. publicly.
Out of the two cuts I had only one needed stitches, and I was given a sling so I wouldn't move my stabbed shoulder which also had stitches. The doctor also examined my throat and said that it looked like I'd swallowed a porcupine so he suggested resting and also honey. Todoroki and I also had a lot of small plasters because of the shards of katana that had flung everywhere. I still hadn't had enough time to actually explain to Iida or Todoroki who I was yet because I slept through most of the next day.
"Were you able to sleep, Midoriya?" Todoroki asks Midoriya, he'd only gotten the two stabs to his arm.
"No, not really." Midoriya sighs, he had one slash on his arm and the slash on his leg was painful enough for him to be unable to walk for a few days.
"I didn't think so."
"Me neither." Iida admits, both his arms were in casts and slings.
Midoriya looks at me, wondering if I'm able to talk to these new people. A minor issue of communication on my part. It's nothing I do on purpose, just that if I don't feel safe around you then I won't talk to you.
"I've always had trouble sleeping so it's nothing new," My voice comes out quiet and I rub my arm, the bandages itch, "Also I never got to explain myself."
"Right," Todoroki nods, "You were wearing the gym uniform from U.A. so I assumed that you were a student but I've never seen you before."
"Well, U.A. is a big school so we might not know him, maybe he's not in the Hero Course." Iida brings up.
I shake my head and my voice gets a little louder, "I do go to U.A. I just haven't attended class yet. I'm in Class 1-A with you three, the transfer student."
"Ehh, you're the transfer student?" Todoroki's reply was monotone and nothing like the big response I thought I'd receive.
"Yeah," I nod, "My name's Kojiko Yuudai, nice to formally meet you."
"That sounds familiar…" Iida swings his head back and forth, pondering on the name.
"My dad was a hero, you two probably know about him because you have hero families. You might be more familiar with Chikamu, though, that was my dad's last name," I grin, talking about my family always seemed to relax me a little. Also, it helps that Midoriya talks about Iida and Todoroki a lot, it's like I already know them so I know they're safe to be around.
"Kojiko-kun's dad is the pro-hero Art!" Midoriya explains, "He was a little popular with the news because people thought he was dangerous."
"That's basically it." I say simply.
"Art, huh?" Todoroki looks at me.
Why's he staring? Is it because my dad was a hero like his dad? Midoriya-kun said that his experience with hero parents is pretty bad. Should I ask? No, that's his personal life...I smile at him and look away.
"Thinking about it now, we did something amazing, huh?" Midoriya draws the conversation in a different direction.
"Yeah." Todoroki agrees.
Midoriya stares at the ceiling, "Seeing an ending like that really makes you feel like it's a miracle we're alive. With my leg like this, he probably could've killed us if he'd wanted to."
"Yeah. We were obviously left alive on purpose." Todoroki looks at his bandaged forearm then looks to Iida, "You're amazing to have been able to face him after all the murderous intent directed at you."
Iida turns to Todoroki then looks at his arms, "No, that's not it. I…"
The door slides open to reveal Gran Torino and the hero with the fin on his helmet.
"Oh, are you wounded kids awake?" Gran Torino greets us and steps in.
"Gran Torino!" Midoriya smiles and sits forwards.
"Manual-san…" Iida's eyebrows seem to frown at the hero with the fin.
"You two, I've got a lot of complaints for you." Gran Torino stomps towards Midoriya's bed first.
"Oh! S-sorr-" Midoriya tries to apologize.
"But before that, you've got a visitor." Gran Torino interrupts.
Another person enters the room, he's really tall and has a...dog...head?
"Hosu's chief of police, Tsuragamae Kenji-san." Gran Torino introduces the dog.
The chief of police is a dog? Chief of police, wait! Isn't this big trouble?
I go to stand up alongside Todoroki and Iida, Midoriya goes to stand too but Tsuragamae stops the two of us.
"Oh, you two can just stay seated, woof." Tsuragamae notes.
Woof? Woof? The chief of police is a dog that says 'woof?' I try to keep the surprise off my face. And also bury any laughter that bubbles in my chest.
"You must be the U.A. students who brought down the hero killer, right?" Tsuragamae asks.
"Yes." Todoroki replies.
"Regarding the hero killer we arrested…" Tsuragamae's head lowers, he looks serious, "He had fairly serious injuries, with burns, broken bones, and stab wounds and is receiving treatment under strict guard, woof."
Woof!
"Since you are U.A. students, I'm sure you already know that when superpowers were still becoming the norm, the police attached high importance to leadership and standards and made sure Quirks were not used as weapons. And then, the profession of 'hero' emerged to fill that gap, woof."
I've never been really acquainted with hero history or rules...I really never had since being a hero used to be considered a waste of time in my past. My dad did try to lecture me about rules, talking about his near arrests due to his years of being a vigilante. A hero that wasn't legally recognized as a hero. Some vigilantes even are considered villains, some become villains and are recruited by heroes. It's just by chance either of those happen, though.
Tsuragamae continues, "For an individual's use of force and power that can easily kill others - actions that normally would be appropriate to denounce - to be accepted officially is thanks to early heroes who followed the ethics and rules of the profession, woof. Even up against the Hero Killer, for uncertified individuals to cause injury with their Quirks without specific instruction from their guardians or supervisors is a clear violation of the rules."
I frown, what does that mean for us? If we weren't seen at the scene then Native would have died and so would have Iida.
"The four of you, and the pro-heroes Endeavor, Manual, and Gran Torino must receive strict punishment." Tsuragamae concludes.
"Wait a minute," Todoroki takes a step forward, "If Iida hadn't done anything Native-san would've been killed. If Midoriya and Kojiko hadn't come, the two of them would've been killed. No one realized that the Hero Killer had appeared. Are you saying we should've followed the rules and watched people get killed?"
"W-w-wait!" Midoriya turns and puts his hand in front of Todoroki.
I mean, Todoroki-kun has a point. We were basically just being vigilantes...maybe the fact we're U.A. students changes this a bit...holding us to higher standards because we attend a hero school?
"Are you saying that as long as it turns out all right, it's okay to bend the rules?" Tsuragamae asks with clear eyes.
Todoroki's face shifts from shock to anger, "Isn't it a hero's job to save people?"
I click my tongue, "We're not heroes yet, Todoroki-kun. Just students learning to be heroes, and there's still no guarantee we'll even become heroes."
"That's why you are not a full-fledged hero yet." Tsuragamae says with closed eyes, "Goodness, what are you being taught by U.A. and Endeavor, woof?"
This seems to only agitate Todoroki more and he takes more steps towards Tsuragamae.
"You dog!" Todoroki growls.
Dog? Nice insult, I guess. I frown as Todoroki is stopped by Iida.
"Stop it. He's absolutely right." Iida steps next to Todoroki.
Gran Torino steps in front of Todoroki, "Hang on a minute. Hear him out until the end."
"That was the official opinion of the police." Tsuragamae continues, "And the punishment and such would only happen if this were all made public, woof."
Ooo, pulling the hide-it-all-away card. I guess that's easier than punishing a bunch of teenagers.
"If this were all made public, you would probably be applauded by the public, but you would not be able to escape punishment. On the other hand, this is a bit underhanded, but if it is not made public, the burn scars would support Endeavor being the hero who saved the day, and it would end there, woof."
Tch...Endeavor...a hero getting credit for nothing. Now I see what the Hero Killer was talking about…'fake heroes.' I bite my lip and hold back a sigh.
"Thankfully, there were very few witnesses. This violation could be crushed here, woof. But this would also mean no one would know about your good judgement or achievements. Which do you prefer?" Tsuragamae asks us, "Personally, I don't want to be the ones to find fault with promising young ones because of one big mistake, woof." Tsuragamae throws up a thumbs up.
"Either way, we will need to take responsibility for being negligent in our supervisory duties." Manual hangs his head.
Iida steps forward and bows, "I am truly sorry."
Manual playfully chops Iida on the head, "All right. You'll cause trouble for others! If you understand, then don't do it again!"
"I won't!" Iida promises.
"I-I'm sorry." Midoriya bows his head, too.
"Please take care of it." Todoroki stubbornly bows as well.
I frown, personally, I don't think that this was a mistake, Tsuragamae-san.
"Kojiko-kun!" Midoriya urges me to apologize.
"Hmph," I bow my head and say a quiet, "Please."
"Because of the unfairness of adults, you will not be able to receive the praise you would probably have gotten, but at least," Tsuragamae bows low, "as someone who also protects the peace, I can say thank you."
Todoroki loses his anger, "Please start with that next time."
Midoriya smiles fondly, "Todoroki-kun…"
I pout and whisper, "It's not a mistake."
"Kojiko-kun, you are very much like your father." Tsuragamae smiles at me and leaves.
"I take after him, huh?" I echo, "I guess that's good…"
3rd Person P.O.V.
"Kojiko-kun, where are you going?" Midoriya asks as he passes by Yuudai in the hall.
Yuudai shrugs then winces, "Diagnosis for my leg. It doesn't hurt right now so I convinced the doctor to not give me a wheelchair."
"You know, you can ask for help once in a while." Midoriya smiles, Yuudai always had a thing against wheelchairs.
Yuudai rolls his eyes, "Did you contact everyone?" Yuudai asks as Midoriya walks back into the room.
"Yeah, Uraraka was a little worried so I called her." Midoriya blushes.
Yuudai smirks, "You just wanted to talk to a girl on the phone, didn't you?"
Midoriya turns an even darker pink, "Well, good luck with your check up. I think Iida just got examined, too."
"It'll be fine, Midoriya-kun. I just want to get back to studying before I miss the entirety of my first year at U.A.," Yuudai walks away and Midoriya smiles.
"Have you ever injured this leg before?" the doctor asks Yuudai.
Yuudai makes a movement like he's going to answer and then freezes, again.
At that point the doctor was a little frustrated. He'd read the kid's files and knew he'd been through some tough shit but he wouldn't be able to do his job if the kid didn't talk.
The doctor frowns, "Kid, I'm not going to be able to give you a diagnosis if you don't tell me what's wrong."
Yuudai shuffles his legs.
The door slides open, the doctor was just relieved that he'd probably need to leave the room. Maybe find someone the kid would actually talk to.
"Kojiko." Aizawa greets, he seems a little unhappy with the current situation.
Yuudai waves shyly at him.
Aizawa turns to the doctor, "Please leave."
"Of course." The doctor bows and happily steps outside.
"Kojiko, what you did was extremely reckless. I can understand that you're not mature because you're twelve but that was way too childish of you to just rush in." Aizawa walks to stand in front of Yuudai, "You are still recovering from your coma, the hospital was only willing to let you go on this trip because they thought you'd be careful. But fighting a major criminal without permission isn't just worrying the hospital."
"What is it now? The fuckin' police?" Yuudai spits the word police out of his mouth like acid.
Aizawa frowns, "Okay, I take back the twelve part. Where did you learn to curse?"
Yuudai shrugs, "My mom said it'd be useful."
"Of course she did," Aizawa sighs, "Yes, the police. You've always had a bad history with them, I know, but you have to understand that this is something you shouldn't have done."
Yuudai doesn't reply.
"I understand why you did it, though." Aizawa concludes, "Just don't do it again. You need to start thinking before you act, you're supposed to be fourteen, now. Also, you interrupted my plans for today."
There's a knock at the door. Aizawa doesn't reply, hoping that the person will just leave but instead the door swings open.
"Oh, it's just you." Aizawa breathes a little softer.
Shinso bows his head in greeting. He's still wearing the U.A. gym uniform and some sort of wrapping around his neck like Aizawa.
"Um, Kojiko this is Shinso Hitoshi. He's in U.A.'s General Department." Aizawa introduces him.
Shinso closes the door behind him, "You said this would only take a moment."
"It might take longer." Aizawa shrugs, "This is Kojiko Yuudai. Don't tell anyone you met him."
"Nice to meet you." Shinso greets.
Yuudai tips his head in reply.
"Shinso has a vocal Quirk, too, I'm training him for right now." Aizawa looks to see if vocal Quirks meant Yuudai would trust and openly speak to him.
Yuudai looks over Shinso, who can only remember the many looks he'd gotten throughout his entire life. But Yuudai's look wasn't criticizing, it was more like he just didn't know what to think of Shinso.
"Nice to meet you." Yuudai says quietly.
Aizawa holds back a smile, "Kojiko is going to be a student at U.A. once he recovers. He's got a vocal Quirk like you."
"He's a student?" Shinso asks.
"Yeah, I'm going to go talk to the doctor. I'll leave you two here for a few minutes." Aizawa slides open the door and closes it behind him.
It's a little awkward to say the least. Shinso was always good with starting a conversation but he really didn't know how to start talking to this kid. A U.A. student but technically a complete stranger.
"You have a vocal Quirk?" Yuudai asks, not looking at Shinso but instead picking at his bandages.
Shinso sits in the only chair in the room and nods, "It's called Brainwashing."
"Mine's called Words that Live." Yuudai replies.
"Sounds dangerous."
"Yours too."
Yuudai looks at Shinso again. He's got bags under his eyes and his hair stands up. Yuudai wonders if he gels it.
"What's your Quirk do?" Shinso asks after a moment of silence.
Yuudai looks at the floor, "Whatever I say happens. You?"
"If you reply to a question I ask, I can control your movements." Shinso braces himself to be called a villain or some other insult.
Yuudai notices, "That must be rough."
"What?" Shinso relaxes and then looks to Yuudai in confusion.
"Vocal Quirks. I mean I've only had mine for a few months and it's difficult to control. There's a lot of practicing and the fear that you'll lose control. I couldn't imagine being a kid and always worrying about what you're saying." Yuudai puts his fingers to his lips and smiles at Shinso, "It must have been rough."
Shinso leans back in his chair, "It was. I got called a villain a lot."
Yuudai nearly jumps up, "Me too! I got called a villain too!"
"Really? Why? Didn't you say you've only had your Quirk for a few months?" Shinso couldn't understand how Yuudai, who was really quiet, could be called a villain.
Yuudai nods enthusiastically, "I was Quirkless until two years ago. Then some things happened and I only woke up until a couple months ago. But even back in grade school and junior high, I still got called a villain."
"And I'm asking why? Man, you really are a mystery." Shinso sighs, he'd never get a straight answer.
"I'm not really the best at talking to people, right?" Yuudai smiles softly, "I was in a coma for two years. My Quirk manifested at the wrong time and I couldn't handle using it."
"Wow…" Shinso whispers.
"But before that I was Quirkless." Yuudai says in a tone that says 'don't worry about it.'
"So you'd get called a villain even if you were Quirkless?" Shinso asks.
Yuudai nods, "My dad was like an ex-villain but he became a hero. People just got really hung up on his past."
Shinso frowns, "So they said you'd follow his footsteps?"
"Yeah, I mean being called a villain hurts, you would know. But I was more concerned about other things."
"I always had something against people who had Quirks that were in some way better than mine. Being called a villain made me hate heroes. But-"
"It's really hard to stop wanting to be a hero?" Yuudai finishes, "Yeah, I tried really hard to give up on that dream. Now look at me. Injured after illegally fighting the Hero Killer."
Shinso almost laughs, "I'm even training with Aizawa-sensei to be in the Hero Course. How wrong could our child-selves be?"
"Right?" Yuudai grins.
Shinso smiles, "Aizawa-sensei's a good teacher."
"I wouldn't know, I haven't attended classes yet." Yuudai shrugs and then winces, again.
"But he visits you in the hospital a lot, right? He talks about you once in a while. He never says it but I think he's worried that you might hate your Quirk. Talks a lot about vocal Quirks and people with them too." Shinso recalls, "Says people always have tough lives with them."
"He talks about me?"
Shinso shrugs, "Occasionally. Most of the time he's busy beating me up in training, though."
"What kind of training?"
"Combat. Also a little Quirk. I'm worse in the combat area though."
"I'm a little rusty myself."
"That would make sense." Shinso agrees.
"But you've somehow gotten Eraser Head interested in you." Yuudai points out, "That means you must be good."
Shinso ducks his head, "I'm decent."
"But what'd you do to get him to train you? I've never known Eraser Head to willingly do something." Yuudai insists.
Shinso fiddles with his fingers, "I got pretty far in the Sports Festival…"
"No way! I thought you were only in General Studies!?"
Shinso nods, "I am. I got up to the one-on-one fights. Got flipped by one of your future classmates."
Yuudai's brain clicks, "Midoriya-kun! I didn't watch the fight but Midoriya-kun told me about you! I should've recognized you from the hair."
"Really?" Shinso tilts his head, "You've met him? He's talked about me?"
Yuudai nods, "He's the first person Eraser Head introduced me to. We have a lot in common so we get along. Also, he's really nice so it's easy to relax around him."
"Sounds like a good guy." Shinso stares at his lap, "I kind of regret saying all those things to him now."
"What'd you say?"
Shinso lows his head more, "Just that he was blessed with a heroic Quirk and that he couldn't understand me…but if you two have a lot in common...I guess...I was being insensitive."
Yuudai sputters, "If you really think that you can apologize to him. I mean, it's not your fault that you didn't know his relationship with his Quirk. Also, Midoriya-kun's a pretty forgiving guy, so I think you two could be good friends."
Shinso raises his head, "You think I can apologize?"
"Yeah, after all he's staying here." Yuudai slaps his hand over his mouth.
Shinso raises an eyebrow, "He fought the Hero Killer with you?"
Yuudai scratches his head, "Actually, no one's supposed to know that we're the ones who did that. It's being written off as Endeavor's achievement."
"That's shitty." Shinso notes.
"Yeah, but it's either that or some punishment and that stuff's messy." Yuudai sighs, "So don't mention this to anyone else."
"I won't." Shinso hums, "Well, I would still like to apologize, if he's not like, unconscious or anything."
"He's doing okay. He's on crutches because of a knife slash to the leg but other than that he's good." Yuudai says.
"What about you?" Shishou points at Yuudai's bandages.
"I'm pretty good, too. Two slashes, one stab." Yuudai holds out his bandaged arm, "My throat got all scratched from my Quirk so my voice sounds a little funny."
Aizawa slides open the door suddenly.
"Glad to see you two getting along." He says in a monotone voice.
"Best buds."
Aizawa stares at Yuudai, "Talk to the doctor."
Yuudai looks away.
"Talk to the doctor." Aizawa repeats.
"...What's going on?" asks Shinso, a little confused.
Aizawa sighs, "Midoriya said you had something wrong with your leg. Talk to the doctor and tell him what's wrong."
"If it's an injury, you should probably talk to the doctor about it." Shinso agrees.
"It's just some pain. It goes away every once in a while." Yuudai admits stubbornly.
"That's not something that's supposed to happen." Aizawa says.
Yuudai huffs, "I know that."
"Then get it fixed." Eraser Head insists.
Yuudai glances at him, "I know, Eraser Head. I know it's my responsibility to take care of my body and that I need to cooperate with a doctor to do it. But whenever I try to talk to him, it's just like words don't exist in my brain anymore." Yuuda takes a breath and suggests another method, "How about I tell you what's wrong and then you tell the doctor."
Aizawa, knowing that this was the only solution agreed. Shinso was still a little confused at the end of it all.
"You can wait out here. I'll get Midoriya-kun." Yuudai says as they reach the door.
Aizawa had decided to wait in the car while Shinso talked to Midoriya. He said to hurry up because 'you're supposed to be training.'
"Okay." Shinso nods and leans against the wall as Yuudai enters the room.
"Kojiko-kun!" Midoriya exclaims, "How'd your examination go?"
"Just some old injury acting up." Yuudai shrugs away his question, "I need to talk to you in the hall."
"Huh? Why?" Midoriya grabs his crutches, "Is there something else wrong?"
"If they're something else wrong we'd be more than willing to hear you out." Iida sits up in his bed.
Yuudai waves his hand at Iida, "It's not like that. I just need to talk to Midoriya-kun."
"Ah, okay." Midoriya makes his way to the door, "What did you need?"
Yuudai walks into the hall and closes the door.
"Shinso-kun!" Midoriya exclaims, "What are you doing here?"
"Aizawa-sensei came to check on Kojiko-kun...I just tagged along." Shinso walks over to them.
"Oooh." Midoriya exclaims, "But why were you with Aizawa-sensei?"
"That's…" Shinso puts his hand on his neck.
Yuudai jumps in, "Eraser Head's training Shinso-kun! He's going to be a hero!"
"Oooooh!" Midoriya smiles, "Shinso-kun that's great!"
"Uh, yeah." Shinso nods.
Yuudai bumps him with his elbow.
Shinso clears his throat, "Ah, Midoriya…-kun. I want to apologize for what happened at the Sports Festival. I...said some really insensitive things to you and I didn't even know you."
Midoriya thinks back, "Oh that! It's no problem really, Shinso-kun. If it gave you the opportunity to train with Eraser Head then I'm actually glad it happened!"
"Told you he wouldn't mind." Yuudai smirks.
Shinso bows, "Ah, thanks."
"Anyways, I think your Quirk is super cool!" Midoriya grins, "You're going to be able to be a hero now!"
"..."
"...Exchange numbers or something." Yuudai rolls his eyes.
"So how did your exam really go?" Midoriya asks as Yuudai sits back in his bed.
Iida nods, "It didn't seem like you told us the truth."
Yuudai leans on his pillow, "It really is just one of my super old injuries acting up. Post traumatic knee arthritis. It's nothing too major, just sometimes it might swell or cause pain or get stiff."
"Doesn't it take ten years after an injury to show post traumatic arthritis?" Iida questions and Yuudai massages his knee.
Yuudai grins, "I said it was a really old injury, didn't I?"
"What about your arms?" Todoroki asks, still concerned about being the Hand Crusher.
"No nerve damage, if that's what you're concerned about. I'll have some scarring but that's fine." Yuudai shrugs.
"How'd you injure your leg? It's not like you had time to get injured recently so it must be from grade school." Midoriya guesses.
"Recently?" Iida asks.
Yuudai scratches his chin, "Yeah, I've been in a coma for the past two years, ended up missing out on the last two years of junior high."
"Coma?!" Iida and Todoroki exclaim.
"But the knee injury probably comes from that one time I jumped off the top of the jungle gym at the playground in grade school. Because it went unmonitored for two years and I also didn't move my leg in that time - bam - post traumatic arthritis." Yuudai recalls the one time he decided the easiest way to get down was to jump off.
"...you got on the roof of a jungle gym in grade school?" Midoriya repeats with disbelief.
Yuudai winks, "Believe it or not I was actually a pretty bold kid, people said I acted just like my dad when he was a kid until...stuff and all that."
Midoriya remembers what Tsuragamae had said before leaving, "According to Tsuragamae-san, you still act like your dad."
Yuudai blushes, "I guess I do…I mean...Tsuragamae-san is probably talking about when my dad was a vigilante. I do think I act a little childish sometimes. I thought I wouldn't follow in his footsteps but this is a little similar to what my dad did when he was younger."
"I thought your father was a hero?" Iida asks.
Yuudai nods, "My dad was a hero but he didn't become one until he was forty."
"Really, that's a late start…" Iida notes, it was different from his family who all planned on being a hero from a young age.
"Yeah, he said that he did actually go to a school for heroes but dropped out a few years into the course. Said that their philosophy and rules seemed a little too restrictive for his tastes." Yuudai huffs a laugh, "He became a vigilante after dropping out."
"Art was really an amazing hero, even if some people didn't really like him." Midoriya smiles.
"Did he tell you his whole life story?" Todoroki asks curiously.
Yuudai grins, "He sat me down one day because I was having a rough time and told me all about his hardships because he wanted to show me how experiences can make people stronger."
"He really would know all about that." Midoriya nods and thinks back on everything he'd read about the hero.
"His favorite saying is 'Don't let it define you but don't let it leave you.' Meaning don't let your past be all that you are but also don't completely abandon it." Yuudai explains proudly, "It's because he was a vigilante and villain that he was able to be such a smart hero at the end!"
"Villain?" Iida says, holding back the shock in his voice.
Yuudai nods, "Some people think that because he was a villain that meant he couldn't be trusted with the task of being a hero but he proved them wrong."
"Actually, a lot of vigilantes become villains because there's no other option. That changed after Art became a hero and talked about that issue. More vigilantes started being accepted for training to be heroes instead of being pushed into the same category as villains." Midoriya explains.
"Right?" Yuudai exclaims, "He was really good at learning from his past."
"So you're going to be coming to class from now on?" Iida asks.
Yuudai hums, "After these injuries get a little better, yeah."
"I'd be happy to help you once you start attending classes." Iida offers.
"Same here!" Midoriya exclaims.
Yuudai chuckles, "Thanks."
That night Iida went home with his family and Todoroki went home the next day. Midoriya and Yuudai stayed in the hospital until the fifth day of the internship. Yuudai found the courage to talk to Todoroki one-on-one about having a hero for a father. He asked if Todoroki was ever worried about Endeavor dying on him and Todoroki merely responded that he'd never thought about it before.
Yuudai thought about his dad, he wondered if he really was just like him. Maybe he was a little more spontaneous than him but maybe that was only because Yuudai only knew him as a hero. Either way, Yuudai was ready to learn how to fight correctly.
