While Jamie worked a desk at his precinct unhappily, Henry came up for a visit on Eddie's wishes. She let him in after hugging the older man then led him into the living room. "Would you like anything to drink Henry. I can make some tea or coffee and have cold cuts if you're hungry," Eddie asked before she sat down too.
"Water is fine, thanks." Henry waved off the other requests waiting until she came back in to get right down to their meeting. "Is everything ok Eddie? Not that I mind coming up to visit but I have a feeling this isn't just a social meeting. If there's something on your mind I'm here to listen and help if I can."
Eddie smiled amused that his cop sense immediately picked up there was more than a random invite. Guess it never goes away no matter how old. "Actually, I don't know if you heard what happened a few days ago with Jamie on the job?"
As it turned out Henry heard from both Frank and Danny about the incident. "I did and reached out to him if he needed but Jamie never called back. I figured he was dealing with it the way he needed and has both you and Renzulli. "
"That's the problem though. He hasn't been doing good after it happened and he talks to me about it but Jamie's still having these nightmares every night. I don't know much about post traumatic stress but he isn't dealing well and I don't know how to help him," Eddie cupped her hands on top of her lap sighing. "I don't understand how things work with the police department and maybe t hat's the reason why I can't help him."
Shaking his head as he set the glass down Henry replied, "No, I think because Jamie internalizes everything to heart. Things like this get to him but you are doing the very best thing by showing you're there and listening when he needs to talk. Danny is working on finding the reason behind the suicide attempt and then hopefully Jamie has closure."
The older man's eyes looked over his grand daughter in law smiling. "Eddie, you are the best thing that happened to Jamie but there's something else on your mind."
"I'm just unhappy with my life, with the place I'm in."
He waited a beat then asked, "How so? Does this unhappiness have anything to do with Jamie and if it does then that's a conversation you should be having with him. Communication is the number one part of marriage."
"No," she replied. "Jamie and the babies are the one thing I'm sure of. It's the other things, school and all."
Henry nodded once, "Your career. You still have another two years left for college. That's plenty of time to switch majors without taking much time. Do you have any idea what you would like to do?"
"No, but I'm frustrated with it, the major and now I have all this time I'm dwelling on it."
Quietly leaning forward in his chair Henry said, "Well, now is as good a time as any to think about what you might want to do. Picture yourself in the future. What do you see yourself doing that will make you happiest? "
"Raise my family, be a good mother and good partner..."
Henry smiled, "Besides all that because you are already a good wife to Jamie. Career wise what do see yourself doing as a career?"
"I don't know, I don't know if I want one," Eddie replied. "I do want to help make money but all I can think now is that is I need to focus on rearing these babies." She played with the bunched up dress around her abdomen.
"I like the stories," she replied. "I like the way it comes together."
Taking a sip from his glass Henry grinned, "And living it each day was an experience in itself. No day was the same and we helped people every day we go out there. Jamie actually graduated from law school but joined the force because it made him happy."
"That makes me scared," she confessed. A baby kicked her hard forcing a groan as she doubled over and cupped over her stomach. "Ooh one of the babies just kicked really hard."
Quickly as he could Henry sat beside Eddie with an arm around her. "Breath sweetheart. In and out just like that. There good. It can be scary and there are no guarantees but we are trained and Jamie has every reason to come back to you."
"I know that when it's in his control, it will... "But I don't know at all if he's protected when it's not. I haven't your deep faith Henry."
"He's protected. Believe me, his Sergeant won't let anything happen to him," Henry said. "It's not easy to have faith but the nypd is trained by the best. Sometimes you just have to have faith."
"I didn't grow up with that..." she replied
Without hesitation Henry held her tighter, "Never to late to start."
When Jamie got home that night he found Eddie on the couch with her feet up, lost in deep thought. She didn't even look up when he came in. "Eddie, babe..." Jamie touched her back as he took the empty seat next to her worried.
She blinked twice, looking up distracted, "Oh hey Jamie I didn't hear you come in. How was work?"
"Good honey, you were a million miles away. You okay?"
The question brought Eddie sitting back, slipping her hand into his. "I'm fine Jamie just thinking about the future. I don't think I'd like to do art history anymore. Jamie, I worry when you walk out that door too."
"You can't worry baby," he soothed. "You really can't."
"How can I not worry Jamie? Every time you leave I don't know if you're coming back," Eddie swallowed hard. "How do I know you're okay? I don't understand any of it."
"You just have to believe in it baby,* he sighed. "Believe I am protected and safe."
There was that faith again just like Henry said earlier. "I can't Jamie. I didn't learn all the police stuff you did to know that you're able to protect yourself. Explain to me so I understand like you do and your family."
"It's not the police stuff that protects me sweetie, it's my faith and trust in God and Holy Mother Church that I know I'm safe," Jamie tried explaining softly.
She shook her head at him, looking down at her hands. "That's it just your faith? Jamie, I've been doing a lot of thinking. I know you do everything to come home but aren't you scared out there? After what you told me about that guy. You still have faith that you'll be safe?"
He nodded, "Yes, I know that God will keep me safe and a prayer to St. Michael never hurt. I wear his medal like my father and grandfather.
"I'm trying to understand Jamie but I don't," she lifted her head, revealing rounded eyes. "I'm scared about you, the future, having the twins. "
"I know, I know let's just let it be right now, let's let it bed."
Eddie pulled back, shaking her head, rethought it and agreed. "Okay. Do you have work tomorrow too or do you have to see that shrink?"
"I just see the doctor then I'm home with you so we can relax all day honey. " Slipping an arm around her waist to help her into their bedroom Jamie watched Eddie quietly change and slide into bed without so much as a word.
She lay cuddled up with him quietly staring into the dark unable to fall asleep and not because of the pregnancy. Her mind raced through what Henry and Jamie told her, the twins and her future as far as career options. Both babies felt how restless she was and were kicking a lot.
Not wanting to wake Jamie she rolled over into a sitting position, digging her feet into the carpet and went back to sit in the living room. Sitting on the couch Eddie cupped under her belly, "You know how mommy feels," she sighed.
Two feet kicked, "I do..." She felt they were saying. Wait shouldn't she feel two sets of feet. "It's late, might be sleeping already like I should be." Eddie took a pillow trying to relax enough to sleep.
