Yeet, I'm late but it's fine. This one's kinda just filler because uhhhh I'm working on plot stuff now. Hopefully I can get the next update on the 26th on time. But also the manga, holy shit. This chapter was just soft and fun for me to write.
Two more weeks drift away and U.A. opens with the new dorm system. The middle of August is the day that all students start moving into "Heights Alliance." Yuudai is still missing, his things at the hospital and the suitcase that was left at the forest have been moved into his room at the 1-A dorms.
After Aizawa lectures the rescue squad and the rest of the class, he speaks privately to Yuudai's friends. At least, who he believes are Yuudai's friends. He then relearns that Kaminari, Midoriya and Kirishima need to stop blaming themselves, Shinso and Iida need to stop bottling up their feelings, and Todoroki shows his worry in a very strange way. Aizawa thinks about talking to Bakugou but passes on account of the loud box opening sounds coming from his room.
Later that night, Midoriya, Kaminari, and Kirishima walk to the teachers' dorms. Todoroki, Yaoyorozu, and Iida have already gone to sleep right after Asui had spoken to them. Midoriya knocks on the door, a little surprised to see Yamada answer. Yamada then directs the three students to the living room that Aizawa has taken over with his work.
"They key card for Kojiko's room?" Aizawa repeats, "Why do you need it?"
Midoriya flicks his eyes to the floor, "We know that we can't do anything else…"
"So we were thinking we can decorate his room for him!" Kaminari forces a smile, "For when he comes back."
Aizawa bites the inside of his cheek. He's been so worried about Yuudai himself that he'd forgotten that Yuudai's friends would also be concerned. He's actually surprised to hear that they know they can't do anything. If anything, Aizawa worries that they'll just run off to go rescue him again.
"Okay."
"I know that-" Kirishima double takes, "Okay?"
Aizawa nods and places the card on top of a stack of papers, "Here. I expect that you won't lose it and it will be returned when you're done."
They bow, "Thanks, Aizawa-sensei."
"Anything to keep you out of trouble," Aizawa mutters and goes back to his work.
The three of them don't actually step foot in Yuudai's room until the following Saturday. They keep it a secret from the rest of 1-A. The tension around the topic of Yuudai is still...tense. Shinso finds out because he somehow finds out everything at one point or another. On Saturday, when everyone's out visiting their parents or shopping or hanging out, Kaminari, Midoriya, Kirishima, and Shinso gather at Yuudai's door. Midoriya was assigned the card holder and kept it in his desk drawer.
"He has a lot of stuff," Shinso notes as they walk in.
The room is manly filled with boxes, even the balcony has a stack of boxes on it.
"He doesn't have a bed?" Kaminari asks as he pushes the boxes against one wall.
Midoriya opens a box plainly labeled 'stuff.' Inside are a bunch of knick-knacks from bottles of grass to little figurines made of wire.
"He's been staying at the hospital for the past two years," Midoriya closes the box and looks around, "I think most of the stuff from his house was sent to storage. Aizawa-sensei must have grabbed random boxes and put them in here."
"It's hot outside so I'll just turn on the air," Kirishima comments as he searches around for the remote.
Kaminari screams, in a totally manly way, "Holy shit, he kept it!"
Midoriya dashes over to the box that Kaminari opened. Kaminari holds up a small keychain of a washing machine.
"What is that?" Shinso pokes at the keychain.
"It's the pro hero Wash. I got a few hero keychains from those little machines with the quarters while I was at the mall. They're really cheap so I didn't want to give them as gifts. He asked me if he could have them if I didn't want them," Kaminari scratches his head, "In all honesty, I thought he was going to throw them away. They're basically knock-off merch."
Kirishima finally finds the remote and turns on the air. He opens the door to the balcony a little so it doesn't get stuffy. The four of them slowly open and organize all the boxes. They discover a bookshelf and desk behind a stack and put them against the wall, across from where Yuudai's bed might be placed.
It's awkward at first and it feels like they're invading his privacy but then everything relaxes. They find small tokens from Yuudai's childhood and objects that he'd been given in the few months everyone knew him. They stop wishing they could save him and start waiting for him to come back. A small sliver of hope returns.
Around noon they run downstairs to grab something from the kitchen then run back up to Yuudai's room without getting caught. It's just chips and some leftover spaghetti. After lunch Shinso goes out to train with Aizawa and wishes the three good luck in finishing.
"Doesn't this bird look familiar?" Kaminari tosses the yellow bird stuffie in his hands.
Kirishima throws a pillow at Kaminari's face, "We're almost done so focus."
"It kinda looks like Yamada-sensei," Midoriya notes before setting a black cat stuffie on top of the folded futon.
"That looks like Aizawa-sensei!" Kaminari points at the black cat.
Midoriya tilts his head, "Really?"
"It does to me!"
By the time dinner rolls around the room is complete. On the walls hang a few dozen posters and photographs. Kaminari declares the group photo from Yuudai's birthday the best photo in the room and tries to center everything on the wall around it. Midoriya protests and sets the posters in a semi-even grid and then Kirishima says it's a little too organized and changes everything.
They stack the unopened boxes of clothes inside the closet. There wasn't a bed packed with everything they found a futon so they fluffed it up and folded it. The desk is neatly supplied with supplies and Yuudai's backpack hangs on the wall next to it. In the center of the room is a small table and faded "Heroes of Japan" rug. Under his desk is a box labeled "Personal Things," the three of them decided it'd be better to leave that alone.
On the first shelf of the bookcase are a bunch of Yuudai's books and papers. Midoirya got distracted reading the hero books that Yuudai collected so Kirishima banned him from working on organizing the books. On the second shelf are a bunch of the random objects that Yuudai collected. Including some really funny looking stones, Kaminari keeps laughing everytime he looks over at one stone. He says that it looks like the frisbee dog meme but it really doesn't. At the bottom shelf are all the figurines and hero things that Yuudai owns. Most of them of his dad and there are even a few that looked like he made them himself in elementary school.
The three of them sit in the middle of the room, in silence, for a few minutes. Midoriya gets up and walks out for a moment then comes back with a notebook. He slides it onto the table and stares at it.
Kirishima breaks the silence first, "Midoriya, what is this?"
Kaminari flips open the book to the first page.
"It's...it's uhm," Midoriya struggles to get the words out, "It's all the places...areas that I've looked."
Kirishima's eyes widen, "Midoriya, don't tell me you-"
"Don't tell Aizawa," Midoirya blurts out, "He'd confine me to the dorms for weeks if he found out. I couldn't just sit around and not do something. And I wasn't in any danger when I was out looking. There were always people around and I always had my phone on me."
"I get it," Kaminari stops Midoriya from rambling on, "I went out a few times too."
"You too?!" Kirishima gapes.
Kaminari scratches the back of his head sheepishly, "Yeah, I figured I might as well try and look. I can make Kojiko's ring glow using my Quirk and used that to try and find him."
Midoriya flips to a page with a map drawn out.
"I tried all abandoned places but reach is limited. I only have so much money for the train," Midoriya explains, "I can only guess that the villains warped to a place that's well hidden and not near the places that I live."
Kaminari nods, "I didn't find anything either."
Kirishima lightly slams his hand on top of the book, "We...we shouldn't be doing this."
Midoriya bites his lip, "I know but it's all that we can do!"
"Dude, it's not like we're going to go charging in," Kaminari reassures, "We all want to do something but for now all we can do is just search around a little and wait. We know that."
Kirishima nods.
"Sorry," Midoriya mumbles.
"Don't be sorry," Kirishima says with a smile, "We're the rescue squad, we can't help but search around a little."
"You-"
"Just a couple places," Kirishima admits, "Didn't find anything, though."
Kaminari gasps, "How could you do this to me! Accusing me of the crimes that you too have committed!"
"I don't know what you mean!" Kirishima says in the same dramatic voice, "I have done no such thing!"
"Oh but you have, you have accused me of snooping around! How dare you accuse me when you yourself have been snooping too!" Kaminari breaks into a grin.
"Snooping?!" Kirishima stands up, "I do not snoop! Snooping is not manly!"
"Then what do you do?!"
"I investigate!"
Kaminari stands and pushes out his chest, "Dare I say that is still snooping!"
Midoriya smiles softly as the scene plays out. Kaminari and Kirishima manage to keep the dialogue going for another five minutes before Kaminari can't stop laughing long enough to say the next line. The three of them tidy up Yuudai's room one last time before leaving. Midoriya locks the door with a silent prayer that Yuudai will come back soon and also unharmed.
