Shinichi woke to the clattering of something in the kitchen. Assuming Ran was making breakfast, he tiredly rolled out of bed and slinked out of the room. Contrary to his belief, the only person in the house other than himself was Kogoro. He looked to be experiencing great difficulties.
"Brat! Ran left early for a club meeting, how do these things wo-AHH!" Kogoro yelled while somehow managing to tangle himself in chairs.
The disguised teen wondered how that oaf would possibly survive without Ran, "I'll do it!" he replied fake-cheerfully.
After successfully reheating breakfast, though it posed a challenge for both, the small boy jumped out of his chair and ran back to his room. He had woken up earlier so that he would have time to do his mandated exercises. Locking the door, he turned into his teen self. It was less painful, but he still had to stifle a scream.
Shinichi followed the list provided. It was simple. A couple sets of pull-ups/burpees/push-ups/etc.…nothing he couldn't handle. A few sets in had him massively regretting those words. The teen swore to himself that he would get better, and also at himself for not being in better shape in the first place.
Yet again a child, the detective quickly took a shower and rushed to school. He wasn't sure if he had the capacity to deal with the Detective Boys at the time, but it wasn't like he ever did.
"Conan!" A voice rang out, which he identified as Ayumi. She obviously had a crush on him; he found it sad if a bit comical. She was leading the group towards him, which consisted of each person he had expected: Ayumi, Mitsuhiko, Genta, and Haibara. The last seemed as tired and bored as always, but he knew that she enjoyed her life.
Thinking about her reminded him that he still wasn't sure what to say about the cure. She couldn't know the circumstances surrounding how he got it, but he would feel bad if she continued to work on one. He now knew that she didn't want to return, so she was only working for him. Shinichi berated himself for spiraling, he would tell her…somehow.
"Hey guys!" he replied, pasting on the face and voice of the past. They would be late to school if they stopped now, "Let's keep walking." He found himself acting as a sort of hybrid around them. He would half act as a happy-go-lucky child and half as himself. It was less tiring, but with how smart they were, he wondered if they noticed how he spoke to adults.
Once arriving at school, the playful conversation turned quickly over to anger/sadness at having to attend. He jokingly agreed though none of the course material here would ever challenge him. The classroom was rowdy as ever, and he spared a moment to feel bad for their teacher, Kobayashi.
The school day was uneventful, but as they were walking towards the gate, Haibara interrupted the group, "The Professor wants to know if you all would like to go camping this weekend. He just completed a new invention and wanted to test it in the wilderness anyway."
The speed at which the kids agreed was surprising, but not unusual. The teen detective declined just as quickly, but he froze. He hadn't thought of a viable excuse, "Uh…Ran wanted to go shopping for the summer and needs me to tag along…?" He cursed himself for adding the questioning inflection to his voice. Thankfully, the Detective Boys immediately believed him and sadly dismissed the possibility. Haibara, however, stared at him accusingly. Dang it. He would deal with that later.
He hurriedly dismissed himself and walked swiftly back home. He wished that he had been better at acting at that moment. Better, he would become better. Better at controlling his emotion, better at acting, better at lying. Shinichi admitted the last line silently.
