"Whatcha doin'?" a familiar voice sounded behind the detective.
He stopped, dropped his tools, and turned around, hoping that his acting classes would pay off, "Nothing of your concern, KID?" he replied smoothly. He Inwardly cheered.
The thief sounded unconvinced as he spoke again, "It looks like you're picking a lock…not very legal if you ask me," He ended with a smirk growing on the corner of his mouth.
"Oh, wow, caught me. Still, none of your concern. If you would excuse me, I am currently in a time crunch and need to return." Shinichi was cut short as KID skillfully danced around him and picked the lock.
"Thought that would go by faster," he laughed, "You know, normally I would leave the gem here with you, but something tells me no one knows you are here. Wou-!" A loud banging distracted them both as Agent Allium rushed up the stairs.
"They planted a bomb. I need your help; I wasn't trained in this." She yelled at him while grabbing his arm. She expertly grabbed a pistol from her belt and aimed towards the darkness, ready to shoot at the slightest sound.
Shinichi was slightly stunned, but he was aware that his slight expertise in bomb removal might be the only thing to save the building and potentially the people outside. KID was dumbfounded as he realized that he was the one who was grabbed. Both boys recognized this instantly, but Ally completely overlooked it in her panic. Also worried, the child followed behind the two silently.
Reaching the bomb in the lobby, Ally finally realized her mistake and took a moment to glance between the two, "No matter, boy, this is it!" she whisper-yelled as the aforementioned boy moved to work on the bomb.
KID rounded a corner and changed back into the clothes he had been seen in earlier. Shinichi assumed he had decided not to make a fuss and knew he might not be getting out of this soon. That woman could be scary.
Ally configured the recorder to start and pointed the gun around in the blackness. KID had adjusted quickly and was holding a light for the bomb-diffusing detective, gem long forgotten. He would give it back later.
A sound resonated from the corner of the room. Ally whipped over to it, training her sights on the slowly approaching figure. It was large, most likely the man. He came forward and revealed himself to have a gun as well. Ally, trained in this situation, shot him directly in the head.
Shinichi was surprisingly unfazed, but he could see his light source shaking in shock, "KID! Hold it steady." He brought the thief back to reality and went back to his work.
It was evident that the organization's members had expected semi-harmless police officers, but her partner's death brought the woman out. She was screaming hysterically and crouched beside him. Ally saw this as a perfect opportunity, as jaded as she was from this line of work, and shot her as well. The shot echoed around the room but was ultimately drowned out by the thinning crowd outside.
"You…killed them!" a shaky voice rang out in the empty space. KID had not calmed. Shinichi was surprised at his own peculiar calmness.
Ally looked at him sadly, "I am sorry you had to be involved in this. This was only meant to be an info-gathering mission; I'll have to report this in soon." she started to trail off in her own thoughts.
Shinichi turned to comfort KID but was stopped by the bodies on the ground. He tried hard to feel any sort of remorse for their death, but he was overcome with utter disgust at their existence. Why would anyone choose to dedicate their lives to something so evil? Does it give them satisfaction, happiness? They never lived-and never would live-to do anything useful. Perhaps this job wasn't as bad as previously thought? He finally listened to his train of thought and stopped himself, back to the matter at hand.
KID had always held an aversion towards death, even in his line of work. Injury of any sort made him uneasy. Seeing a woman in the company of his trusted detective kill two people without remorse was overwhelming. It didn't help that the small detective hadn't reacted at all. He had seemed so calm. KID was broken out of his trance by a worried look and touch from the child.
"I know you're in shock. I'm sorry that you saw any of this. Trust me, I would rather not be here…" at those words KID brought Shinichi into a bear hug. The child wasn't sure how to react, so he just returned it, "Are you okay?" he whispered.
"Okay? Do I look okay? How are you not phased by this, detective?" The thief babbled on with more questions, but the shrunken teen sat in increasing shock. This was strikingly similar to how he had reacted when only introduced to the concept. Had he desensitized himself so much in such a short time? No, death was never a viable option; why couldn't he bring himself to be scared? He was scared only by the emptiness.
"I'm…. I'm not okay with this." He whispered almost inaudibly. He hugged tighter onto the thief and felt like a child again for the first time in years.
